MadBum: What to Expect in 2012
This was from Voggy yesterday…..
“People don’t realize (his youth) because he’s so big — he’s a monster,” rotation-mate Ryan Vogelsong said of Bumgarner, listed at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds. “He doesn’t have a baby face, and he’s so strong that it makes him not look his age.”
I went back to find my earliest impressions of YoungBum and here’s an excerpt from my 6/27/10 post:
“…I was struck by how big he’s gotten. Last year he was a super skinny kid but he’s really filling out nicely. Walking around the other players, he fits right in physically—his shoulders, as I said last year, are wide and he’s definitely growing into that frame…”
I am expecting huge things from Madison Bumgarner this year. All of his numbers, especially his 2nd half numbers from 2011, are pointing to a breakout season. Check out his WHIP dip from 1st half to 2nd half:
1st half: 1.36
2nd half: 1.09. That’s as elite as it gets for a starting pitcher……
He also minimized his struggles vs right handed hitters
1st half: .290
2nd half: .244
One of my favorite indicators of future success for pitcher is their command ratio (strike outs/walks)– a pitcher’s ability to get the ball over the plate. The better pitchers will have ratios in excess of 3.0. Pitchers with ratio’s of 1.0 or less have almost no chance for long term success. By the way, if you want to stay on The Surkamp Train don’t calculate his CR from his short stint in the majors last season…….
MadBum’s first half CR from last year was 3.1. Very nice. His 2nd half CR? A stunning 5.4.
I think he’s going to have a monster year. As it has been with all Giants starters over the last few years, wins might be tough to accumulate. But I still think he’s going to go 16-8, at least, with an ERA around 3.20 and 200+ strikeouts…..
With his WS performance in 2010 and turn around last year, Bumgarner is arguably the best starter on the club right now. From Extra Baggs:
“Through 52 career starts:
Bumgarner: 20-19, 3.10 ERA, 325.2 innings, 287 K, 75 BB
Lincecum: 22-8, 3.21 ERA, 336.2 innings, 366 K, 137 BB
Cain: 17-20, 3.62 ERA, 328.1 innings, 278 K, 150 BB”
I can see Cain and Bumgarner getting locked up long terms and Lincecum moved for a gang of picks by this time next year.
oooh, I disagree Dirt. You can’t move any of them unless it’s for a lot more than picks. Giants SP depth isn’t real strong right now; good pitching means you can win by scoring less runs. Weaken that, you have to improve the O quite a bit to compensate for not being able to run an ace starter out there 30 plus times a year.
AZ won last year not because of how much better their hitting was, it was because of how well they pitched, esp out of the pen, compared to 2010. I don’t think SF can afford to lose any of above listed until someone else emerges as a Big 3 type, which ain’t Vogs imo.
Willie, agree. should have said more than just picks top level prospects and mlb level players moved nonetheless
Unlike other pro leagues, in MLB a team cannot trade an MLB player for draft picks…
I know. my mistake..meant prospects
It would be fair to note that Craig was down on him, as most were, when he came up in 2009, and in ST of 2010. Most believed his velocity was down for good. When he had a rough spring virtually no one believed he would be a front line starter…
And, BTW, there is not nearly enough evidence on Surkamp to be writing him off quite yet..
I admit I was one of the bummed about Bum. I went from trade his ass to put him in the second hole between Tim and Matt. I think the kid will kick ass this year.
I agree that Surkamp can’t be written off just yet. I know he’s 24 and his velocity is low, and I imagine ML hitters were probably just sitting on the curve when he came up last year. But he was so successful in Richmond, just let the guy throw in Fresno and see if he can adjust to those guys before bringing him to SF. Maybe he’ll be the next Kirk Rueter, I’d be happy with that.
Didn’t MadBum’s on-field demeanor come into question as well? Some incident over a teammate’s error in the minors, if I remember, not long before he got called up for good. If anything, this guy has shown he’s as cool and controlled on the mound as they come.
Bum is coming on strong this year. With more offense hopefully,.i see him winning 18 -20 games. He won’t start out slow this year.Has great control, and is only getting better.Breakout year for sure.
He needs to learn that he doesn’t have to throw strikes.
The big 3 could all go 20 given the run support. And not even great run support.
Not many win 20 these days. I could see one of them perhaps.
Davy Jones paased away. That sucks
Wow that’s a bummer Ted.My sister use to have a Monkee poster hanging on her wall as a kid and listened to all their records.
RIP Davy
Who gets his locker?
Too soon?
A tad, yes.
I suppose it would have been a more appropriate announcement on the BBOTD thread. Especially considering today’s photo
For being a marketing/TV ploy, they were actually pretty good songwriters. At least Mike Naismith was. I don’t know how much the other guys wrote, but for being the Prefab 4, they weren’t half bad.
And the GTO they drove was a pretty awesome custom ride . . .
Was this as big as Ben Gazzara?
As a pop culture thing, yes. As a gauge of talent–I guess that’s up for debate
I think I’d have to go with Ben on any level.
Well, I think I know what you’re saying but with maybe a few exceptions (ROAD HOUSE; CAPONE; THE BIG LEBOWSKI) Gazzara’s oeuvre wasn’t really “pop culture”. But a great actor? Yes. A theatre icon? Sure. An independent film pioneer? Absolutely.
It was sort of a joke, but I forgot Loo’s line about Gazzara. Something about trying to carry on. That’s why Loo’s the best.
Oh. Sorry. I took you seriously. And yes, Loo’s line *was* funny.
As long as one thinks it funny applied to anyone, like a minor pop star…
“Road House” got mentioned….it’s my pick for one of the best Worst Movies of all time, meaning an awful movie- but awful in an entertaining way. There are lots of awful movies that aren’t entertaining, but Road House sets a standard for unintentional laughs.
Swayze was in a few baddies. He and Whoopi in “Ghost” were hilarious..
Looks like the extra WC team into the playoffs is a done deal to begin this post season, per published reports. Since the Budster was heavily involved, it’s stupid, as expected. One more WC team per league, then both WC teams per league play each other in a one game “play in” playoff. One game. You might as well just roll dice to select the winner. Of course it is nonsense, this is all just a money grab by the owners for more late season butts in seats, and more to the point, a way to guarantee that the Yankees and/or RSox always get into the playoff mix for ESPN. Hell, might as well just change the rules so that both of those teams ALWAYS get into the playoffs regardless of their record. That would just be cleaner. This expands the number of teams that will still be in the hunt at the season’s end, but then diminishes the accomplishment with a bogus one game scenario. That’s fine in the NFL, but in baseball, idiotic. If your #1 is ready to go because your WC squad coasted into that spot, and the other team has their #3 only available because they had to burn their #1 and #2 just to get into the “play in” game, there’s a decided mismatch advantage. Best two of three would make far more sense, but does MLB ever pay attention lately to anything that makes sense?…
actually, I’ll be disagreeing with youre post in tomorrow’s thread. I think the WC add is a great idea and have several reasons to back my *opinion*……
OK, BF, I look forward to seeing it. I’m not TOTALLY against an extra WC. I do think the playoffs now are just about perfect, the way they are set up. Last day of last season was an example of that. Anyway, the main thing I’m against if there is to be another WC is the bullshit way the one game “play in” is being handled…
Henry provides a good argument against the “play in”…
Giants going to keep Panik at SS. Excited about this kid’s potential as much as Brown’s.
definitely. But have you seen pics of him? Glad he’s a SS. He looks t-i-n-y. Probably just young. And he uses a super small glove, like many MI’s, making him look that much more “little leaguer”.
No doubt though, I’m excited about him. Dude seems like he can hit. Plus I love this type of shit:I can’t find the quote right now, but when asked if he was cool what level he started at this year, he said something to the effect of “I don’t care. Wherever I go I will try to dominate”. Now, that wasn’t word for word, but he DID use the word *dominate* which I thought was fuckin awesome word for a SS to use in reference to himself–can’t remember where I read that…….
\
He’s also been playing some 2nd, and he should. Franchez is not coming back next year. There’s going to be an internal battle to take that spot for 2013 — Panik and Culberson maybe….
He was playing second partly becuse it was thought he didn’t have the arm for short- I’d think that Gillaspie will also get a second base glove. They have to do something with him…
Panik is definitely a candidate for a quick trip to the bigs..
I just read Schulman’s post and I think mine has far better arguments……..
Of course.
Doesn’t speak well for Crawford.
As I said the other day, the urine mule that Braun essentially character assassinated the other day with his “statement” should, and now has, come out and protected his reputation. The guy is Dino Laurenzi, Jr. Laurenzi said he followed the rules under the circumstances, and from I read, he did — he kept the sample in his house in the refrigerator from Sat night until Monday because no FedEx service centers were open after he took Braun’s sample after the playoff game that night. He says he’s done this many times before with other athletes’ samples, with no issue. Importantly, he said he DID NOT TAMPER with the sample, which Braun recklessly and clearly hinted that he might have done, if you look at Braun’s video statement the other day. Braun took pains to say FedEx places were still open that Sat night. I’ve read other things saying there were NO FedEx service centers open in Milwaukee that night after the game, and that’s what Laurenzi says. If only box drop locations were open, that is NOT OK for a courier to use under the MLB drug test protocol, so keeping the sample secure in a cool place until a real FedEx office was open was the proper thing to do. Upshot: this Laurenzi cat is saying that Braun is FOS, and he’s pissed that Braun has impugned his character…
From what I read he also took samples from other Brewers that night and handled them the same. Yet, no other complaints or positive tests from the other samples using the same storage (on the same day/night).
decided to pop the new thread up now.
Chuck? What’s that you say is going on?
