A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Leading the League with Our Bats……

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 11, 2012

About a week into Spring Training, I think it’s safe to say that the offense is hitting on all cylinders. When was the last time you saw an SF Giant team stat line that looked like this:

Melk has a 1.667 OPS. Crawford, Burriss and Blanco are all hitting in the mid-400’s. El Presidente is rollin’ with at a .364 clip……….************Note to Readers***********: I don’t actually think these Giants hitters will continue to hit at this clip. This was a sarcastic swipe at the offense. That is, unless you think me lumping Crawford, Burriss and Blanco together as *mid .400* hitters is an indication you think I think they’ll keep that going……..

Zito is crouching along with a 2-0 record, 3.60 ERA. Tom House says he can pitch for another 10 years. Tom House must have been drunk or high when he gave that interview to Schulman……

I think Surkamp is pitching today. Definitely interested to see if he can reverse that horrendous bb/so ratio we saw last September. Word was that he was fatigued and I can buy that one time. We could be turning to him when Zito’s Law kicks in…….

Hey! Curry hurt his ankle again! I’m wondering if Jackson’s plan is to turn that ankle into something that resembles uncooked hamburger meat left out in the sun for a few days— that’s where this is headed. Sit him down for the rest of the season already……..

I’m not surprised at all . . . I was ALL IN for adding Melk and Angel, trading Sanchez, etc. In Sabean and Bochy, I trust.

Only hitting stat that will go down significantly is home runs . . . Duh! We play in the phone park and we are FINALLY taking advantage of the park’s configurations. Having an “other worldly” Barry Bonds, you can say, “Fuck the park . . . it just doesn’t matter,” but we don’t have him anymore and that station to station bullshit we played last year was so painful to watch. This year the Giants will have an exciting roster and give Botchy so many more options, especially in the late innings, e.g., stealing bases, extending base hits to doubles and triples, bunts, etc.

    I love this team! πŸ™‚

I hope you aren’t predicting a *significant drop in hr’s*– we hit 121 last year. We couldn’t hit any fewer…….

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on March 11, 2012 at 7:46 am

No, no, no . . . I meant relative to what they have already done in Spring Training. The 121 threshold will be easy to break. Yeah, you were onboard with everything that went down, but many others weren’t. I am stoked about this year, if only because they won’t be playing that boring station to station crap anymore.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 11, 2012 at 7:54 am

I know. I said last year, I don’t mind us being a station to station power hitting team or a slap happy/stealing bases team, but if you’ve got neither then you offense is fucked…….

By the by, I have Dorell Wright on my FL basketball team . . . Early in the season, I traded Gerald Wallace for him (I needed 3s and scoring at the time). BIG MISTAKE. Wright has been absent all season. Despite this, I will win my FL league . . . However, in regard to Curry or Wright, who do you think is the bigger disappointment this year, Flav? Personally, I choose Wright, because physically, he hasn’t had any ailments like Curry has dealt with (again) this season. Regardless, they both suck in FL and 3D. Ha.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 11, 2012 at 7:58 am

Wright is just going through the motions. I don’t know if he and Jackson don’t get along or if the new offense is something he just can’t fit into. But he’s completely absent. Curry plays his ass off every time he’s out there he just has a totally fucked up foot. And NO ONE can tell me that the sprain from a week ago (which one? I know) didn’t have anything to do with the other injured part of his ankle. Whether he was compensating for it somehow, I don’t know. But that foot just needs to be completely shut down for the season……..
Wright is more disappointing now, Curry could turn out to be the most disappointing for his career since I think this could easily be a career threatening problem……..

Rebecca is a friend of mine who can talk shit with the best of you and who possesses one of the most spectacular racks around. I wanted to have at least one chick in the league and she agreed to play…….

Flav, speaking of “Cheese,” give me the exact quote you used in your slogan for FL baseball last year? I will miss Torres and Ramirez, who were unbelievably productive in 2010. Torres will always be remembered for 2010, but he struggled mightily with physical and mental issues in 2011 and I no longer saw him as an everyday player for the Giants. Regardless, I hope he does well for New York. Same thing goes for Cody Ross and Sanchez . . . I will always root for them to succeed.

Ramirez was sensational after being acquired at the 2010 trade deadline and he was almost as good last season, posting a 2.62 ERA while tossing 68.2 innings in 66 appearances. But the Giants have a lot of right-handed relievers in their system β€” Per that MLB show last night, prospect Heath Hembree is gold and will be up to the big club should Wilson flounder.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 11, 2012 at 9:00 am

The Mets were even happier to get rid of Pagan, whose WAR was less than Torres, who actually had value to his team even while not hitting- Andres was 1.3, to Pagan’s 0.2.

  7. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 11, 2012 at 8:40 am

That’s fucking hilarious-as Flavoro has now abandoned his long held and provable position that ST stats do not have have relevance as to how the players will perform in the the regular season. And poor Steve has bought it, saying that the .325 team batting averager will not go down significantly. I could get rich off these goobers…
Anyway, on to today’s non-biased poll.Yesterday Steve attempted to answer the question.
“Anywho, in my mind, Huff sits if he can’t cut it in spring training and Belt outperforms him. Either that or fuck spring training . . . Like War, what’s it good for?”
There was no option in the poll for his answer.. it was a bogus poll, yet he defended it even though it had no option for his common sense response. He defended it by attacking my position. even though his attempt to answer the question was an option that FLAVOR DID NOT ALLOW.
Before I get to today’s super fair poll, The Giants hit .290 for the full ST season in 2007. They went on to lose 91 games, hitting .254.
    The poll:
How long will Brandon Crawford hold the SS job:
    1 day
    1 week
    1 month
never, he’ll be released before the regular season

You’ll notice that there is no option to say you think he get and keep the job. I’m not allowing that option, because I only want options that I like.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 11, 2012 at 9:18 am

what in the fuck are you talking about? I wasn’t serious about posting that. Gawd, can’t you translate anything? By listing off Blanco, Crawford and Burriss all hitting in the mid–400’s you thought I was excited about that?
I think it’s FUNNY that we are leading MLB in batting average. My thread today is a sarcastic swipe at the offense. I DON’T REALLY THINK THE GIANTS WILL HIT .325 AS A TEAM THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You’re impossible. Go back to Room B and talk to yourself if you can’t understand any of these harmless threads…….

Man,it’s tiring to be around people who always have higher standards and a disrespectful tude for everyone here who isn’t as enlightened as themselves. I can disagree with someone’s take on an issue without resorting to calling them a disagreeable name like “snarklefuck”, whose meaning it is hard to “misinterpret.”
the way the message is being delivered is just as imp as what is said, maybe even more so.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on March 11, 2012 at 9:38 am

Obviously, the Giants as a team are not going to bat .325. If they did, then you would have to go back to 1930, and that still wouldn’t match what the Giants hit back then (.330). I’m not certain, but that might be the MLB record. The Phils hit .315 one year as a team and the Yankess hit .319 one year too.

Sure, call it a “goober” (and it is within the context you describe), but I didn’t expect my comment to be parsed. Next time, I will hire Pawlie to break down my sentences into their component parts of speech with an explanation of the form, function, and syntactical relationship of each part. πŸ˜‰

Seriously Mike, I only meant that I am excited by the Giants potential to hit better than last year and be an exciting team vs. the boring team (hitting) they were last year. That’s all. Oh, and if it sounded like I was ragging on you yesterday, I didn’t mean to. Enjoy your day . . .

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 11, 2012 at 9:47 am

You said “Only hitting stat that will go down significantly is home runs”… Would you like to review your post? No parsing neccesary. Rather than giving me shit for accurately reporting what you said, you might try just saying you got carried away.

Bruce Bochy has finally been acknowedledged as one of the best managers in the game. Contrary to unsupportable comments here, there is no indication that he would ignore performance in awarding roster spots and starting assignments. In the 1st base battle, he indicated at start of camp that Huff was the front runner going in. But he has never awarded the job to Huff, ruled out Belt, or declared that Belt had to perform at an arbitrary level beyond Huff’s to win the job.Who will win that job is at this point unknown, and no one here has any inside knowledge as to what Bochy will do. The statement that he wants the team as “vet-laden” as possible has already been debunked. As Steve said, all intelligent observers would think the job will be awarded on merit and nothing has been said to suggest Bochy would not do exactly that…

So, as I understand it Pagan is shit, Crawford is shit, Huff is shit, Vogelsong will be shit, Nate will be shit, Sanchez is hammered dog shit, Posey will be shit and his back ups are shit, Zito’s picture is in the dictionary as the definition of shit. OK, I think I’ve got it now.

Now, now. The Mets think Pagan was shit, Crawford is shit at the plate, Huff will start, just not neccesarily at 1B, Vogelsong has to not be shit or we’ll have double shit in the 4/5, Nater wil be a fine back up, Fruckie won’t be as good as he was before the injury, Posey might take longer than hoped to get back from his, and Eli and Stewart are definitely shit.

I’m giving Pagan a pass on his 2011 season. The entire Mets org was dysfunctional starting with their owner who ripped several players in a NY Magazine article. If Pagan soured on that place, lots of them did. That’s what fresh starts are for. (Torres, Dirrrrrty and Ross are getting fresh starts, too)….I’ve read some articles this Spring that say Pags is like the most positive, energetic guy out there (with at least 1 writer comparing him to Torres in that regard).
Pagan is saying his goal is to steal 50 bases this year. I’m in. If he repeats last season poor offensive performance I’m sure he’ll be relegated to utility outfielder by June1 or so……

  19. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 11, 2012 at 11:19 am

He doesn’t get a “pass”,IMO, he gets the chance to prove he’s not what the Mets were dying to dump. Regardless of their numbers, I think it’s totally telling that the Mets traded for a guy who is the antithesis of what they pegged Pagan for. If they were looking to upgrade their defense and add some class to the clubhouse, they got the right guy. We’ll see about their contributions…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on March 11, 2012 at 11:56 am

In all the discussion, Loo points out a very salient fact (which I also read about) . . . “They were looking to save money.”

. . . And, remember, the Giants wanted/needed that additional salary space so they could do 1-2 more things with the roster. Yes, it amounted to only 2-3 million dollars, but that was huge considering they were almost maxed out anyway.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 11, 2012 at 12:11 pm

Andres gets 2.7 million, Pagan 4.8 , Ramirez 2,650.00. Mets saved some money on the CFers and added Ramirezes’ salary. So the Giants traded two players, got one, and subtracted 550,000 from their payroll.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 11, 2012 at 1:36 pm

So actually, the Giants add payroll, as they have to replace Ramirez. I think Loo meant that the Mets were trying to save money, anyway.

  20. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 11, 2012 at 11:29 am

I don’t know about *dying* to get rid of him. If that were the case, why’d we have to throw in Ramirez, too?
Pav reported Bochy said Pagan was faster than Torres, maybe that’s why we had to throw in Ramirez (sarcasm).
He also seems to think he’s a fine clubhouse guy
    http://blogs.mercurynews.com/giants/2012/02/25/spring-notes-vogelsong-nears-return-liked-torres-youll-love-pagan/
As i have said many times, it’s perfectly reasonable to assume Pagan got caught up in all of last year’s team-wide (including the owner of the team) negativity and dysfunction. And with this being a contract year there is obvious motivation for Pagan to be everything Pav’s says he is in the link posted above….

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 11, 2012 at 11:38 am

He says he “looks to be a good addition to the clubhouse”. I wouldn’t call that a definitive endorsement quite yet.
So there there isn’t much to “to be everything Pav’s says he is “. He doubts that Pagan is faster than Torres and says he smiles a lot. That’s it…

  21. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 11, 2012 at 11:29 am

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 11, 2012 at 11:51 am

I understand that opinion. But it would make no sense that if they were desperate to ditch a guy how they could end up getting MORE than just a straight up trade of Torres for Pagan, If they were trying to get all that (defense, pen, class etc…) then shouldn’t it have been the METS throwing in the extra guy and not the other way around?

As per MLB Gameday, Surkamp through 3 has walked 0, K’ed 3. Before the last out in the 3rd, he had thrown 17 pitches, 16 of them strikes. I’m not making a BFD about his numbers thus far, just addressing the concern about his BB/SO ratio, which is now 2 BB 7 K for the spring. I don’t think I can recall a pitcher with his BB/SO ratio in the minors, having as drastic a change as he did after his recall. It’s not surprising at all that it seems it was a temporary glitch, due to weariness; hardly uncommon among young pitchers. Despite insistence from scouts, ( and your dear ME) most here believed Bumgarner had permanently lost velocity or that it had never been as high as reported earlier in the 2009 season. Premature panic is a staple in the blogosphere…

Well,we all know I’m not funny, in fact after the kerfuffle with Craig, I checked my surgical procedures for the last 5 years and it seems they removed the only humorous bone in my entire body. What ticks me off is that gave it to some comedian, Mitch Hedberg. So his joke about escalators is really mine..”I like the escalator. Because an escalator can never break. It can only become stairs.”
That may not be Loo level gold but I’d say it vindicates me and shows that if not for an unscrupulous surgeon, I’d be a really funny dude…

I don’t recall anyone either here or from the scribes who cover the GIants saying that Surkamp was fatigued last September. I don’t remember Kruk or any of the broadcasters suggesting it. I saw Bochy say it a week or two ago and it made a lot of sense so I would think it would have made sense last September had I heard or read someone suggest that……..
As I said, it’s a fine reason to take another look. His bb/SO ratio was pretty spectacular in AA, as we know.

*****Here’s something very non-controversial that maybe one of you guys can shed some light on for me. When the September call ups come up, Kruk invariably talks about this exciting influx of *fresh arms*. But these pitchers have been pitching all year without a break down in the minors and many of them didn’t have much of an off season if they pitched in the ARZ rookie league or in the DR. So how could these new arms be *fresh*? And as we see with Surkamp and certainly other more notable young pitchers who are on an innings count that get shut down in Sept, I don’t see how that would suggest anything *fresh* about these new, incoming arms……..*******
Anyone got a theory about this that isn’t stupid?

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 11, 2012 at 4:21 pm

It is kinda amazing to watch, a couple of houses already went up here, and they got them on temp pylons in just under a day. To do the rest, redoing the plumbing, electrical, new stairs, foundation and all the rest can take a bit, luckily we’ll be in New Orleans for two of the weeks when they’re doing this shit. I gotta tell ya though, this thing happened in August and it’s a fucking never ending red tape shit after eating beets.

      • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on March 11, 2012 at 8:32 pm

Blade- we are on cement raisings (?) about four feet but we’re going on wood pylons (with cement footings) at eight feet. Actually we were pretty fortunate as far as structural damage is concerned, but if you walk around your house and measure two feet, that’s what got fucked up. We are in a village that had maybe 250 full time residents before the storm, now it’s maybe 200. Dude, I have a photo that I was going to send to twin (front porch deal) where the water had gone down to the porch level and if there was a sound bubble over my head you could tell I was thinking that I’d rather be in SF.
Anyway, your right Blade raising the house is a good thing although I think I’m going to need a landing or two on the stairs going up, just to sit my ass down.

    • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on March 11, 2012 at 8:09 pm

It was a tough year for us twin, thanks man, but given what you’ve been going through, it’s not so bad. I know a guy in New Orleans that is a building inspector. He’s been working on his house since Katrina, now get this, he’s been renting a place to live in while working on his place and he couldn’t get the funds for his place because he wasn’t living in it. I have to say though, FEMA and our insurance company (Farm Bureau) must have learned something from Katrina because both were right here and did alright by us, but Wells Fargo, who we have a mortgage with, took control over the insurance money and will only give us a third when we get the repairs half done (the rest when all the repairs are completed). So it’s kind of a pay for it yourself and then we will release your insurance check kinda deal. I know I said fuck Irene but if y’all don’t mind – FUCK YOU WELLS FARGO. Sorry about that, but I’m using my retirement funds because they are worried that folks will take the insurance check and run (which I understand) but we still live in the house and we have a contractor working on this shit. Ok, that was TMI, sorry – Go Giants and go Gregor Blanco.
