A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Not Worrying About The Loss of Bee-Wheezy

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 16, 2012

I pulled some stats from last season that covered *post all star break*– that doesn’t cover it perfectly, but it covers most of the time that Wilson missed last season. They had 2 blown saves post all star break 2011 which was 2nd best in the NL next to Arizona (who had 1). They only had 21 save opportunities post AS break, but that’s still a 90% success rate, which is outstanding.

Maybe I’ll feel different after a few wild and wild and whooly appearances from that maniac Casilla. We’ll see. But right now, the closer role is not on my list of things to worry about (Giant’s related).

In fact, I don’t have a single thing to worry or complain about regarding the team. At this point in the season, that’s fairly amazing. Zito is pitching reliably. The hitting has been fine collectively. The shoddy and downright weird starting pitching has righted itself. I suppose if Timmy gets shelled tonight that’ll give me something to rant about tomorrow.

Speaking of tonight, this is an exciting match up.  Four Cy Young’s between these two. The Phillies are shells of their phormer phucking selves, at least in terms of their bats. I phear no Philly bat this year……

The only thing I am worried about is the “Sun Dressed Goddess.” I have been meaning to bring this up, but have forgotten to. However, I digress . . . In my opinion, we don’t need a mascot that hasn’t brought us any luck, i.e., we didn’t win anything last year. My recommendation is that Flavor Nation scour the homeland and search for a new mascot that brings hope and renewal to our beloved Giants. By the by, I agree with Loo – do you guys ever go to a baseball game? We can’t find a replacement Sun Dressed Goddess by typing on our laptops in the living room. Just saying’ . . . 🙂

In any event, some might find my message sacrilegious, but I stand by what I said – that the first Sun Dressed Goddess be retired forthwith and a replacement be found. If it would help, have a poll on retiring her ass, whereby you could vote anonymously.

good one blade. As to the immediate future of the roster, forseeable FS returns in couple weeks if all goes well (depends on how you look at that, sure). So who does he replace? There is a glut of guys able to play 1b/OF, and given recent injury history seems unlikely they would dump a middle IF. Would Sf already try and deal for pitching depth in the pen? Does bochy keep same number of pitchers?

time for a new godess. someone dressed in giants garb. hopefully with big tits and a willing disposition :).

Not sure what to do with FS. Burress seems to be handling himself well. You send Belt down until either huff or nate drops off. curious as to how melky’s hand is feeling and whether it’s contributing to his recent o-fers.

As i’ve said in years past, the key is to be at or very near .500 going into all-star break, without any major losing streaks. then get hot going into august and september and roll into playoffs en fuego.

Freddy coming back, if he’s truly healthy, should be a good thing, and Theriot disappears. The ‘Ot’s’ were truly ought nots. Burriss stays, and if they need more IF help, Arias comes up. That’s not what I think will happen, just what I think should happen.

Wilson will be missed but will not sink the ship. Several of us have said here we’re more concerned about Tim than we were about the closer.

This team will (should) be well above .500 at the break.

Agree about the Phils… just got an email from my Dad, who lives in PA and is a long-time Phils fan, and he said he’s not even watching them yet, too boring. The pitching is still strong, but I’d love to see this offense take them down this week. Don’t know about Melky’s hand, good point… and a possible concern, he’s clearly key to this team.

Someone send me some Giants gear, and I’ll get one (or some) of my students to model it for the Flap. They would surely bring good luck. Craig has seen some of my photos on FaceBook, I’m guessing he would second that emotion….. I’ll be back visiting the US in June/July, I’ll buy some gear then. And, would love to meet up with Flappers for a game or viewing the game at a good watering hole.

Based on the Facebook pics I’ve seen there’s definite potential for some Flapettes to model the hell out of Giants shwag. I liked the photo of your classroom and the “final” final your students were taking. Judging by their comments (at least the ones I could read in English) you will be sorely missed at that school.

Pill is the logical choice to go down. And please, skip the spiel about the imaginary requirement for a RH bat “off the bench”…
Steward, at the Merc blog, referred to last night’s miscue by Pablo as “another disturbing ‘fat’ error”. One, I don’t see where his weight had anything to do with it, it was a tough play, those pretending that it was routine or “had to be made” don’t understand the game. Whatever he weighs, he’s the MVP of this team, there are far more pressing concerns, it looks like our best leadoff hitter and OFer is on the DL in NY, and obviously we need Tim to get back to form..

    • willieD's avatar willieD said, on April 16, 2012 at 9:00 am

it was a really hard play, and if his weight was bothering him what about the play he made on the foul pop? my only thought was he could have held the ball, but he’s trying to get an out there to help out his pitcher and keep the game close.
Interesting all 4 guys on pg wrap jumped on Pagan not scoring from third on the IF grounder to 1b from melk, who has hit a lot of balls on the ground (hard, admiitedly) lately with a guy at 3b. You’re a speed guy you don’t hesitate when it’s hit that side where they were playing back and conceding the run anyway. they weren’t going to even throw…wtf?

I think it’s great that all the players wear #42 once during the season. A nice yearly reminder that non-whites were barred from MLB for so many years. Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, and so many other great players were never the nation-wide household names they should have been. And MLB never knew Satchel Paige in his prime. All the players wearing #42 once a year, for the next 100 years, might begin to earn some forgiveness for that.

Kind of odd that 1b has always been where you hide the big lumbering types with pop. No way pablo is near the size of prince fielder, for one. And a 1b has to move quite a lot during a game, esp once there is a baserunner, plus all the parks where there is a lot of foul territory. 3b is more a quick reaction position that generally requires less mobility than middle IF, right?

I am sort of optimistic that Wilson will be back in baseball at all. I have watched a lot of closers just burn out their arms, from Scott Garrelts, Shooter, Rob Nen, and now Wilson. It seems like when a closer goes down with needing surgery they rarely if ever come back. Before everyone goes crazy and lists a bunch of Closers who have come back, I am listing the Giants that I know about. But go ahead and list those pitchers.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 16, 2012 at 10:09 am

well, Wilson has already blew out his arm, got surgery and returned to win dominate the closing position and win a world series so I think guys can and do come back from it….

If there’s a problem I have with Jackie’s day, it’s that MLB is doing so little to reinvigorate the black presence in the game. It’s encouraging that Magic Johnson has already partnered with the Jackie Robinson Foundation and there are some efforts to make playing the game actually affordable for inner city youth..

Good article on Wilson by Schulman. I liked Wilson’s quotes in it, a lot. It’s hard not to like this guy, he’s like Nen — no doubt gave up his arm to win the 2010 season and WS. And, he succeeded. I’m sure to him, that ring is well worth another visit to Dr. Andrews’ OR. If anybody can make it back from a TJ #2 surgery, he can. Good luck to him, and thanks. And BTW, he’s going to rehab with the team during the year. That’s awesome, and shows me a lot. Whether he ever makes it back the same, not as good, or not at all, Baer might as well put up his plaque on the wall tonight before the game, he’s more than earned it. BTW2, that ankle injury thing was a hoot — he got the save in Denver with a blown elbow. That’s impressive. Scutaro must feel good, he made out against a pitcher throwing with a broken wing…

I admit I was skeptical of the dude when he came along, I couldn’t figure whether he was serious or seriously deranged. He is definitely a cut above the average MLB player in the gray matter department. He can put sentences together better than a lot of the media covering him. Glad he’s staying around the clubhouse during the rehab. His personality definitely contributes to a positive vibe, somehow, on that squad. The wackiness is more than a bit contrived and for public consumption, IMO, but the dedication to craft is clearly not, and that’s the main thing.,..

Here’s some facts back then…Game 6 was the first game back in SF after the Yanks went up 3-2 in NY.The previous game was Oct 10,this one was Oct 15 because of a travel day and 3 straight days of heavy rain. The Giants won behind Billy Pierce’s CG 3 hitter,
The price of a ticket to sit in the lower boxes was $12.00 adjusted for inflation that is just a few cents over $90.I would gladly shell out $90 like any Flapper fora lower box W/S ticket,i mean aren’t some field boxes for regular season games more than that now?No one ever said that MLB has not made money in the Selig era.

Orlando Cepeda got 3 hits in game 6,and 2 RBI’s.He was also caught stealing once. The losing pitcher was Whitey Ford, lasting only 4 2/3 innings and giving up all 5 runs. The Giants did not hit a HR,although Roger Maris hit a solo shot. The Giants Starting LU…..

I totally agree with Snarkk and others re Wilson. He goes down as a great SF Giant whether he ever throws another pitch or not.
I also agree with Loo’s take on Jackie Robinson day. A bit much for me.

I’m not worried now about losing Weezy, but it’ll become an issue if:

    a) Romo keeps showing his aversion to the job
    b) Casilla becomes the wild thing trying to do the job and walks a shitload of people
    c) Affeldt and/or Lopez don’t get righties out if they are asked to do more than LOOGY work.
    d) The recent history of Closer-By-Committee-Flameout rears its pointy little head

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on April 16, 2012 at 5:22 pm

I think losing Wilson was obviously a tough blow, but I think Bochy’s greatest strength is the way he handles pitchers–especially the bullpen. I saw it for years down here in SD and now in SF. With all the good arms we have down there, I’m confident he’ll find a way to make it work.

How many of Bumgarner’s free agent years did we buy out with this deal?

The house goes up Wednesday. Today was an electrician getting the shack back up and running (with a building inspector that basically walked up and slapped a sticker on the new box). Today electric on the shack, cut off the utility porch on the house, put up temp props for the front porch roof and cut the columns holding them. Not to mention shutting off and unhooking the sewer system on our house, cutting off all the plumbing, gas and electrical. I’ve been doing some demo on some old kitchen cabinets and clearing out a bunch of shit (payback for leaving the wife to go up to DC for the Nats opener).
Next week we head off to New Orleans for a couple of weeks of music and complete debauchery. No need for dial a shots, although there will be at least one that’s bar to bar (NOLA to SF).

“The San Francisco Giants join the Bay Area in mourning the loss of the five crew members of the ‘Low Speed Chase’ sailboat who died tragically this past weekend.

We were deeply saddened to learn that a member of the Giants Family – Alexis Busch – was one of the victims of this horrible tragedy.

The daughter of former Giants Executive Vice President Corey Busch, Alexis grew up in the Giants organization and went on to become Major League Baseball’s first bat girl – a position she held with the Giants for several seasons at Candlestick and AT&T Parks. A true baseball fan, she was a passionate and dedicated member of our organization and she will be deeply missed by the Giants family.”

After 9/11 Alexis wasn’t allowed to be a bat girl anymore. She and her dad sat in front of me at a game and what great stories they told me. Corey talking old Giants and Alexis the Giants of the day. She had a huge crush on Shawon Dunston because he made her laugh. RIP Alexis.

At one point I was asking Corey why the Giants didn’t get Koufax to work with Estes like he did with the Mets. He reminded me that Sandy had a contract with the Dodgers and they probably wouldn’t want Koufax working with Estes. He then turned to his daughter and asked her to tell me her story. She told me she had given Estes a book about Koufax and he was pitching great. I asked her why he wasn’t pitching so well now and she said he lost the book on the last road trip.
