Second snarkk comment at 8:29 last night about casilla and flannery, altho C should hardly be the lone ranger. No idea, but do pitchers ever do any defensive IF work at all during season? Makes you appreciate those who can field their position well. belt deserves props for his D last night too, saving a couple bases on casilla throw.
Used to play softball with a P who turned every one hopper back to the mound, which from the OF looked like easiest play imaginable, into an adventure.

Yeah, Belt with the good D and, shock of all shocks, a hit with a runner in scoring position, a stat frowned heavily upon by SaberMetrics guys but the play itself and the drama it provides at the moment actually helps wins games….

    • James's avatar James said, on April 29, 2012 at 9:26 am

Belt was 2/10 w/ RISP before last night’s game, now he’s 3/11. He also had led off an inning in 15 of his meager number of PAs, This has been chewed on many times before. Over any real statistical sample, BA w/ RISP will be close to actual BA. It just doesn’t tell you very much about how valuable a player is as a hitter.

Oh, and I second Dirt’s comment about not blowing up the Flap but rather figure out a sort of self-service way of doing it…. It’ll never be the same without Craig moderating it, but it could still live on in some way..

It’s a shame that it might be Huff’s misfortune that causes Bochy to install Belt as the regular first baseman, a job he never should have lost in the first place. Next priority should be giving Blanco a chance… as I said when he had his brief outburst, Nate has repeatedly shown that he’s not up to regular duty. The question with PaGONE! is whether his offensive production will be able to keep up with his boneheaded blunders and liability defensively- it’s a tight race..

  12. willieD's avatar willieD said, on April 29, 2012 at 9:20 am

Off topic but ? for Zum: In the ike bio, any mention of his oft quoted remark about dangers of mil-ind complex, which from what I understand was taken out of context and whose real meaning has been misconstrued? Also, any discussion of what US “advisers” were up to in Nam during his years in office, esp after Dienbienphu?

  13. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on April 29, 2012 at 9:44 am

Good showing by Timmy, and although there were still too many walks, not one of the Padres’ 3 hits left the infield. The hardest hits by Pads all night were the line drive sac fly to Melky and the two running catches by Melky. And Belt coming through with the big hit is most encouraging.

Only bummer of the night was Rodriguez’s 9th-inning meltdown in L.A. It looked like he would escape a 2nd & 3rd no-out jam and get the save, but then he pulled an Affeldt and threw a wild pitch for the tying run.

    Blade, bring back a W — preferably a shutout!

  15. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 29, 2012 at 10:37 am

Crawford: .149 in the same number of career AB
    Burriss:.266 173 AB

Tose are the numbers against lefties for the 4 guys sitting today.

  20. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 29, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Ok then how about your theory for why Bochy has, again, put out the worst defense he could possibly field………..

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on April 29, 2012 at 1:18 pm

My best guess is that Bochy is sticking with what he thinks is his best matchups. He always has been and continues to be a R/L, L/R matchup manager. I honestly believe he thinks he’s giving the club the best chance to win. I’m no conspiracy theorist. I just happen to disagree with his strategy.

  22. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 29, 2012 at 1:13 pm

It just doesn’t make any sense. He wins the game for them last night and Bochy obviously knows his numbers against lefties. Must be something that doesn’t have anything to do with the numbers. Bochy isn’t stupid, as we know…..

As I told Loo, it is a line up of RH bats against a LH pitcher. I don’t agree with all of it, but that’s the reason, not offense vs. defense…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 29, 2012 at 1:23 pm

I get that. I just don’t understand why Bochy seems to have almost no regard for the quality of defense he’s putting out there. Every single position player (except Pablo) is worse defensively than the player who is sitting on the bench….Mix and match a little, it doesn’t have to be be 100% your worst defensive LU

  26. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 29, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Willie, the Eisenhower bio takes the mil./ind. quote at face value, that it means exactly what it seems to say. Some folks nowadays may be trying to do some revisionist history on that, but the author (Newton) makes the case that throughout his presidency, Ike said similar things. That speech at the end wasn’t just a one-shot deal. Ike was VERY concerned throughout his presidency that the mil./ind. complex (and the politicians in close relationship with it) that had arisen during WWII would oversell the dangers of the Cold War and cause the U.S. to spend way too much on the military, which is what ended up happening anyway.
And continues on today, of course. Who’s beating the drums for a war with Iran? It’s not hard to guess.

That Halberstam book about the ’50s is pretty interesting, too, though very long.
        —–
Halberstam died in a car wreck in Menlo Park in 2007. He was being driven to an interview with Y.A. Tittle by a Cal grad student. The Cal guy made a lefthand turn right into oncoming traffic, and the car was T-Boned on Halberstam’s side. It went from being the best day in that grad student’s life to the worst day in his life in that one instant.
Halberstam was writing a football book about the ’58 NFL season. The book was eventually published anyway, with the book being completed by Frank Gifford, of all people.

A little humor from Henry at the Splash today:

Yup, no Brandon Belt the night after he got the winning hit and a rare clutch hit for the Giants. Manager Bruce Bochy said it’s a combination of changing the lineup for a day game after a night game and a desire to throw a wall of right-handed hitters at Clayton Richard.

Richard has a career OPS against of .789 vs righties and .615 v lefties.

“We’ve got a pretty good right-handed bat at first base,” Bochy said of Posey. “Day game after a night game, facing a left-hander. We have our right-handed bats out there. This guy’s been tough on us. He’s given up all his home runs against right-handers. We’re going to go with hitters who give us the best chance to win.”

That’s the explanation. If you have an issue with it, please write:

When BF calls it a day on writing the daily lede on the Flap, maybe we could keep it alive anyway. Just rotate writing the daily lede among the regulars on a 10-day rotation or whatever the number would be based on who wants to do that. So, everybody knows when their lede is due, and prepare (or not) accordingly. If somebody forgets to turn it in on time or blows their turn off, no biggie, just continue as now when BF occasionally skips a day. People could e-mail their lede to BF, and all he’d have to do is put it up. That’s assuming he would even want to continue doing that. Just throwing that out there…

Weird story at the Gate by Schulman—He said that Richard is *significantly tougher against left handers than right handers.” That claim appears to be Schulman’s since it wasn’t in quotes. Bochy goes on to say how tough Richard has been on the Giants in his career.
Richard, like almost any left hander, is better against lefty’s than righty’s. That’s a staple of the game and pretty much dictates most PH/reliever match ups late in games.
BUt I wouldn’t call Richard “significantly tougher against left handers”
This year, lefty’s are hitting .217 against him, righty’s are hitting .239. For his career, lefty’s have hit .240, righty’s .281. I know there’s a 41 point gap there but being a lefty and holding lefty’s to a .240 career batting average is fairly pedestrian.
Lefty’s have hit .198 against Kershaw in his career. Lefty’s are hitting .233 vs CC Sabathia and I’ve never heard CC have the reputation that he’s *death* to LH hitters. Nor have I heard that for MadBUm who has almost the exact same lifetime BA against vs lefty’s that Richard has–.241. To compare him to a lefty specialist reliever, Lopez holds lefty’s to a .227 batting average, righty’s hit .297 off him…….
I just don’t see the argument that you have to go all right handed bats against Richard because he destroys left handed hitting. He doesn’t. He’s very good against them like almost any left handed pitcher is……..

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 29, 2012 at 6:52 pm

Well, I would have started Theriot ( .299 career against lefties) and Arias ( .329) , Belt (.347), and Nate (.307).
Pill and Hector would have sat. I think one can see Bochy’s problem, though. All of these mentioned deserve playing time plus Crawfowd still deserves time and has the good glove, and Manny has played well. Blanco is really the odd guy out. The bench has turned out much better than thought-so far.

Santiago Casilla, who I always thought to be a wild, unreliable man unsure of the ultimate destination of any of his pitches, is actually closing out games far more reliably than Wilson ever did. He’s got 4 saves and probably would have had 5 had Bochy not pulled him int he Met game due to *match ups*.. Last year, I think he was 5 for 5. He’s fucking perfect. And his saves are usually a breeze.
Wilson would load the bases seemingly every single save opportunity. I like Casilla’s way much better……

  53. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 29, 2012 at 7:25 pm

Flav I’d like to know your thoughts (and everyone elses) on H Sanchez. bochy said his bat is forcing him into the LU, esp vs. LHP. He’s a hacker, so will that catch up to him? I watched him gun down a couple Pads the other night. How often should he be playing? When he does, what do you do with Posey? Can he catch all of the SPs? Anything to make of the IF practice at 1b, or this is just late game double switch stuff?
How does our depth at C, minors guys included, affect Posey and where he plays?
