A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

One Loss + One Broken Hand = Big Problems

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 3, 2012

I’ve decided I really hate the Marlins. In ’97, they took us out of the playoffs from the wild card slot. In 2003, the image of JT Snow laying face down at the plate as they eliminated us again is burned into my brain. Last year, Cousins effectively ruined our season by taking out our catcher. And during last night’s frustrating 3-2 loss, ย Sandoval apparently broke his hand swinging a bat. Throw in the fact that Ozzie Guillen is a moron and I just don’t like it when we play this team……

Assuming the xrays come back positive, the replacements for Pablo are dubious at best……

On the current roster, you get your pick of Burriss, Pill, Arias and Theriot to fill in for The Panda. From that list I think I’d go “Arias/Pill/Burriss/Theriot” in order of my preference. Arias seems to be able to hit well enough to play a corner position when compared to Burriss and Theriot who do not. Pill might hit well enough but defensively I think the concerns are obvious…….

Coner Gillespe, in his 5th year with the organization, is having his best year so far. In 104 at bats he’s got 3 bombs, he’s hitting .362 with an OPS of .935 in Fresno. I don’t know about you, but I have never looked at Gillespe and said “We gotta get ourselves some of that.” But who knows, he’s at least a natural third baseman and the Giants might give him the first shot as they withstand the shocking blow of losing the Panda for an extended period of time……..

Two longshots:

1) Buster Posey. Hey, if you don’t want to see to big of a drop off in offensive production, Posey could fit the bill. He player shortstop growing up and into college before he shifted over to catcher. And the Panda’s defense would be easy to replace, at least what we’ve seen this year from him. Posey could do this, in my opinion, if he had more time to get used to the position. If this were spring training, I could see it as a viable option. Right now? Unlikely….

2) Aubry Huff. Despite being currently on the DL and not having played the position in years, third base IS a position that Huff is familiar with. He’s played 2,900 innings at third base. I can’t imagine the Giants turning to Huff to play 3rd with all the stuff he’s got going on right now, I’m just throwing it out there—he knows how to play third base……..

All in all, pretty ugly options. Let’s have ย a vote and I’ll pass the results on to Bochy later this evening to give him the best chance of making the right call. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Bummer news about Sandoval.
    —-
Man, what an awful at-bat from Pill last night, especially in that situation. I don’t think any one of those pitches was a strike. That at-bat alone ought to prompt a meeting from Bochy with the offense. The Giants aren’t going anywhere with stupid at-bats like that.
    —-
Well, I’m going to the game today! I’ll try to bring some victory mojo to the team today. (grin) Have a great day, Flappers, and let’s a get win today!

hey zum, I swore I head kuip say twice last night it’s supposed to be 80 degrees out today. Uh, no gorilla. It’s cloudy and funky in south bay now, so I can’t imagine the Yard is much nicer..according to Chron,”Approaching cold front will reach bay area today…chances of showers.” sounds more like, ” Pitcher’s weather”, as kruk puts it.

Snarkk and I were wondering about Panda after his AB in the sixth . . . “Where in the fuck is Panda?” Obviously, you don’t find out about these things until you get home and read about in the Flap. Where the slogan is, “Where News Is Number One All The Time.” ๐Ÿ™‚

By the by, Snarkk predicted the squeeze play before it happened (so, I thought I would give him credit here). Great time at the ballpark, except for the rally falling short, and it turned out that the KNBR tickets I scored were much better than the ones I received for Christmas, i.e., the latter ones were near the arctic jet air stream and we wouldn’t have lasted beyond Barry’s 3 2/3 of innings pitched. Yep, it was that cold. Fortunately, the other tickets were much better with no wind.

I really enjoyed Snarkk’s company and like I said earlier, despite the Giants losing, it was still a great time. Actually, I thought the train ride back had more entertainment value. Two separate incidents occurred . . . One, a young couple, fucked up on too much to drink, started arguing with each other, ending with her slapping him in the face, after exchanging a few choice F bombs, she sat by her girlfriend a few rows back in the train. The other incident was another young couple, exchanging F bombs and worse (yes, there is worse) because they mistakenly got on the bullet train, where the first stop is San Carlos . . . She was especially hilarious, saying at one point, “You dumb motherfucker, how we suppose to get back to the motherfuckin’ Bay Shore stop. Stupid asshole.”

Zum, I hope your “mojo” is better then the combined Flap mojo Snarkk and I brought to the game last night. Have a great time dude. ๐Ÿ™‚

maybe last night at least gets hector back to back up status, instead of #5 hitter. Blanco got on a few times and had a nice grab in RF. He and Arias need to be in there somewhere, and Gillespie has been here before.
No one “replaces” Sando, but maybe this gets the others to realize they need better approach to ABs, get on base more often, and be sharper defensively. Pitching wasn’t very good for most of last night, but marlins only had 2 runs in 9, and were lucky to get those. Time to pull together, as a team, and give smarter effort.

In relation to the poll…not sure I want to see any one guy there…platoon. Arias has one start and 13 innings at 3rd. I say bring up Gillaspie and platoon it.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 3, 2012 at 9:01 am

I voted for Gillaspie, just because I think he needs to be involved in the platoon.

Hey – I sent you a text last night (last cell number I had for you) after the 9th saying that you and Snarkk had best still be at the game (you guys don’t strike me as the “bail early” types)…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 3, 2012 at 9:23 am

We didn’t bail, despite the boooooooooooooooring middle innings. Let’s put it this way – I didn’t “roll” into bed until 1a.m. Long frickin’ night and to come up short in the ninth was disheartening to say the least.

By the by, I read all the comments you guys posted last night prior to hitting the sack and I have no idea who said it, but the comment about Reyes making unbelievable plays, as well as the routine ones was spot on. We were both impressed with how Reyes played. In contrast, he made our shortstop look incompetent, e.g., the Infante grounder was an easy double play ball and that bobble by Crawford allowed a run to score.

Regarding Zito – I think Snarkk and I counted 60 pitches and that was after he had only pitched 2 innings. Zits must have walked 6 or 7 batters in the 3 plus innings he pitched. Obviously, not good.

Jeez…I hate to be a downer, but these last few games were borderline unwatchable. This shit keeps up and I’ll be out on the ledge, again.

They had SO MANY opportunities to win the game last night and could not get that one clutch hit. Pill’s AB was awful…hell…I would damned near ship his ass to Fresneck on that AB, alone.

Between Pablo’s injury and the continued inability to get a key knock…I am just really frustrated. Sigh…

Okay…let’s get a win today! GO GIANTS!

  5. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin said, on May 3, 2012 at 8:06 am

What is it with this team and RISP? Do they forget how to hit, pressure to get a hit? I just don’t know. But this is very reminiscent of 2011 redux . Yuck. And the other thing that pops out is the defense, I thought all these young players were touted for their D, they just had trouble hitting big league pitching?? Well it appears that defense is a problem also. All I can say is hopefully the Giants are going to still be close to the top come July and all this crap is worked out.

  6. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on May 3, 2012 at 8:29 am

Isn’t that the same hand Pablo had the hamate bone removed? Real downer.Gilliaspie. might be natural 3B but he’s a butcher with the leather.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2012 at 8:46 am

AK, at least it’s his other hand. It isn’t the same hand he hurt last year. Bring Gillaspie up and call it a day.

Yeah, I’m with Chi, and I said it through these last 2 games. These wasted opportunities get so depressing. There’s pressing and then there’s Pill’s AB. If the pitcher had thrown it over Pill’s head, he would have swung. Awful awful awful AB there. Guys have been sent down for less.

Still and all it comes back to the fact they won it all in 2010, so it doesn’t bother me as much as it would have if they hadn’t won it all . . .

    • St's avatar St said, on May 3, 2012 at 9:00 am

Cishek was tough. Pagan followed Pill’s poor ab with a weak ab and both Hector and Belt looked over matched striking out in the 10th.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 3, 2012 at 9:05 am

Yeah…I get that Chuck (that winning it all in 2010 softens it somewhat). I have been reading Paulie’s book, and there was someone in there (probably a Red Sox fan) who said that once they finally won a WS, it softened the blows on the other losses (him talking in relation to the meltdown on the final night of the season last year).

So, I am there to some degree…but…it is still frustrating as hell. The Giants have had SO MANY chances to win games and have not delivered in the clutch (RISP). It’s just down right fucking depressing.

Get a win today and I will feel much better…we get swept…and my ass is probably out on the ledge!

I don’t see why Gillespe is the obvious choice. Despite his recent play, he’s been largely underwhelming as a professional. But I guess we’ll get to see what he has to offer, it would be the *logical* choice….

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 3, 2012 at 10:18 am

I think he is an obvious choice to come up for a couple of reasons:

He is a true 3rd baseman.
His numbers at Fresneck this year have been good.

As I mentioned…I think a platoon is in order (and that seems to be Bochy’s MO, anyway). As Twin mentions, this allows them to use Arias more in one of the middle infield spots.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2012 at 10:14 am

He’s been hitting nicely, but I guess it finally clicked in my head that Angel Pagan is the worst fucking baserunner ever. Up there in the Rueben Sierra mold. He couldn’t make it to 3rd on a grounder through the right side in the 1st inning? What the fuck is he waiting for? Of course Panda follows with a fly ball that would have scored him, and there you go. A little thing that he can’t fucking get right and it cost them a run.

Fucking Reyes made it to 3rd on a liner hit to LEFT field for God’s sake.

  19. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 3, 2012 at 11:21 am

Not to pile on, but I just saw this by ESPN’s Tristan Cockcroft:

Tim Lincecum’s fastball velocity remains down. No pitcher in baseball has suffered a more significant dip in fastball velocity than Lincecum; what was a 92.2 mph pitch on average has dipped to 89.7 through five starts, and he hasn’t even hit 94 mph on the gun once all year, after doing so 246 times in 2011. Here’s the problem with that: When Lincecum throws his fastball 92 mph or slower, it’s much more hittable, to the tune of .309/.409/.456 triple-slash rates since 2009. He’s being forced to lean more on his breaking pitches, and that’s not what you want to hear considering how violent his delivery is. Lincecum is still capable of a season that would warrant a place in any fantasy lineup, but he’s not the ace he was a few years ago, and he’s a riskier pitcher than he has ever been before.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 3, 2012 at 11:34 am

Well, other than you, Flav, me, and what Chi has posted since his return from exile (grin) – we all agreed that anything beyond a 2 year contract was a big mistake. I hope Timmy can just last the 2 years we signed him to, but regardless, he sure gave us a career and a half in the time he has been here, especially those two CYs and the World Series.

I know that Snarkk is a big fan of Aaron Rowand ( lovingly called Rohand). I thought that the chit chat about the Gamer might interfere with the game. It was meant in good humor..

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 3, 2012 at 12:14 pm

Ahhh . . . Actually, snarkk didn’t mention him. However, I should give him props for not missing much during the game (even when I was jabbering, he was more into the game than I). Besides the examples I noted previously, he was spot on about Theriot’s tendency to hit grounders up the middle – twice Theriot did that (where the infielders were perfectly positioned for the put outs). He also was correct in noting before the game even started that this would probably be one of Zito’s games, where Bochy better pull him after the 90th pitch. He hit that one on the nose or almost on the nose.

Not blowing up his tires, but anyone who graduates with honors from Cal Berkeley and does similar at Hastings Law School, is quite sharp and he didn’t disappoint. Conversely, I felt embarrassed to expound about my experience at Regis University.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 3, 2012 at 11:43 am

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 3, 2012 at 12:01 pm

He gained a lot of weight last season ( he said he was up to 197). *He* attributed much of it to his special diet and didn’t like the way it made him feel. So he has cut down on the burgers and I hear he’s lost the weight back, back down to 175 or so. He looks more like 150, IMO..

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 3, 2012 at 12:03 pm

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 3, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Never was a big dude, but yes…he bulked-up last year, and then took the weight back off this year. If he truly has continually lost zip on his FB, it will be interesting to see how he accomodates that change. Velocity is not the be-all-end-all for an effective pitcher…Greg Maddux is an excellent case in point (but then he could spot his pitches on a gnat’s ass at will). Again…will be interesting to see how it all pans out post-2013 (when Timmy’s contract is over), in relation to him remaining in the Orange and Black. I even mentioned the other day (a few years ago people cringed when you mentioned it)…that perhaps a trade is in order.

For the airlines I do fly, I really dislike United Airlines. Dirt, if it wasn’t for the 50 thousand frequent flyer miles I have, I would get rid of my United Mileage card immediately. Trying to find a trip where I exactly use the FF miles and say adios to that credit card permanently.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2012 at 12:50 pm

5 days on the runway? Noe THAT’S harsh.

      • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 3, 2012 at 12:54 pm

Chuck, no they let us off the plane. No alternative flight was provided for 5 days. We were on vacation so it wasn’t so bad but the treatment was BS.

Blade, I flew alot in my last job and United always treated me well. Took the Reno to Denver hub route quite a bit. Plus they partner with Luthansa so I’m able to use the FF miles as we head to Germany at least every two years.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 3, 2012 at 1:01 pm

I don’t travel that much any more, but in previous jobs traveled quite a bit. I always had good service with United. Last trip with them was SF to Tokyo non-stop…was a great flight both ways.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 3, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Mostly, I dislike United due to the baggage fees and especially, for changing the Mileage Plus rules, e.g., at one time, 60k would get you a RT ticket to Australia, since then, they have raised it to 80k (and frankly, it might be even more now). Still kicking myself for not pulling the trigger on a trip I had planned to Oz before they raised the bar on mileage. Similarly, they use to have an ironclad rule with regard to all domestic flights – all were no more than 25k (occasionally, you could get Vegas for 15k). Now, they change it on whatever destination is popular, e.g., try getting Vegas for under 30-35k, unless you want to depart after midnight. Ha.

Conversely, Southwest GAVE ME 50k miles just for getting their credit card and it only cost 13k of those miles for an upcoming June flight to Vegas.

Oh yeah, did I mention the ugly stewardesses? ๐Ÿ™‚

Blade and I had a fine time at the event last night that was a so-called baseball game until the bottom of the 9th, when it really became one. Being able to commiserate with a true, knowledgeable fan during that exhibition made what could have been a snoozefest into an enjoyable time. I became more convinced that the team is driven to play crap defense behind him when Zito’s laboring; just watching from the seats was borderline torture. Anyway, we had some decent pre-game chow and beers (me) at 21st Amendment talking about Giants and life in general. Blade’s a real Giants fan — from the City, from a family of Giants fans, and even went to Seals Stadium as a very, very young lad. A gentleman he is, and a good dude. However, he diid piss me off a little. He actually met some hot Colombian chick around the 4th inning and disappeared with her — I never saw him again…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 3, 2012 at 12:54 pm

OK. That was a fib; I told him I’d say that for a laugh, so there it is. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks Blade for a cool evening. Hope to see you again…

I met Blade briefly before a couple of Giants games when he was in town, and he also picked me up and we went for dinner when I was in Denver. Yes…a true Giant fan and a good guy. I may have been the one that turned Blade onto the Flap. Anyway…all good stuff…except for this damned series with the Fucking Marlins. Come on…we need a win in a bad way today.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 3, 2012 at 1:20 pm

Crawford has not been good enough on defense to warrant carrying his bat. 5 *charged* errors. He has 7 or 8 really.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 3, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Yes, you’re right Mike, e.g., last night he didn’t get an error because he got one out on that sure double play where he bobbled the ball.

  32. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on May 3, 2012 at 12:57 pm

all these errors and unearned runs are getting really annoying….Crawford gets any other error today, his ass should be going to Fresno. We need bats…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 3, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Not being a smart ass, but which minor league short stop takes his place? I think we are running out of competent replacements not only at shortstop, but all positions. Hate to say it, but we may have to consider a trade should we fade significantly in the division standings or we shout that familiar refrain, “Wait until next year.”

      • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on May 3, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Arias at least knows what he is doing with the bat…I dont love Gillaspie as our alternative at third. My sense is that he will do nothing with the bat. But we really have very little in trade chips. Infield of Belt-Burriss-Arias-Theriot if they grow tired of Crawford’s glove…but that infield still really sucks…
