A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Weird Game in Arizona

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 13, 2012

Nothing like the opposing pitcher hitting your 2 worst hitters (after 2 were out and nobody on) and then giving up a double to your pitcher to kick start a dead offense. Couple that with his throwing error in the first that led to our first run and you have to wonder if Cahill had money on the *over*.

We left 17 men on base. 0-4’s up and down the line up. Pagan got on base 5 times and never scored once. Brandon Crawford, inexplicably, tried to bunt for a base hit with a man on third and two out. Seriously, if YOU don’t even believe that you can get a hit then it’s time to stop playing baseball for a living. Anyway, just a weird but welcomed game. Winning that one got the dirrrrrrty snakes out of our head a little bit…….

Zits going today against fellow lefty Saunders. More weirdness is probable……

The actual LOB total was 11. A lot of people make the that mistake. If you look at what each player LOB you get a higher total than the true one because there are duplications. For example, if two players fail with the bases loaded, each will be “credited” with leaving 3 on, but only three were actually left on, not 6. The actual LOB total is shown beneath the invidual stats, you’ll see last night’s right under the 3-15 with RISP..

Schulman leaves open the valid arument that signing Beltran could have been done after the Melky trade. I posted about that yesterday- agreeing with Craig’as premise that I had disagreed with before that the 5 million for Affeldt and what ended up paying Pagan would have provided over 9 million toward getting Beltran, and we’d still have Torres- even if he was a 5th OFer, he would have been valuable.
In Steward’s Merc blog, he shows that there are writers even more dismissive of Pagan than bloggers- as he says this about Pagan and Belt last night:

“Angel Pagan had the most meaningless reached-base-five-times game from a No. 5 hitter I think I’ve ever seen….Brandon Belt did more going 1-for-5. He drove in a run with a groundout in the first inning and his triple in the ninth set up a very important insurance run. ” I actually think that’s unfair to Pagan as it’s not his fault no one drove him in..
Well, it will be interesting to see the LU today. I guss we’ll see the usual Hector/Posey routine, but they should really just rest Posey. And who plays left with Saunders going? If Bochy goes the match up route, stand back as the Pill testimonials pour in..

Still plenty to worry about with this team. Could be another frustrating day against the lefty Saunders, who has pitched well this year.

Might be a good time to start Aubrey Huff in LF. Lifetime, he’s 11/26, .423, against Saunders. Belt is 3/4.

    Against Zito
    Bloomquist 10-37 2hr
    Roberts 4/9
    Upton 5/20
    Montero 3/8
Good to not see Drew who is 11/33 or Chris Young, who despite hitting only .240, has a .436 OBP against Zito. Yep, lot of walks.

  5. St's avatar St said, on May 13, 2012 at 9:07 am

I’ll never get into second guessing about Beltran unless I hear Carlos say he would have signed here for just 2 yrs, 26. Until then, I will believe it would have taken a lot more and that Beltran never seriously considered coming back here, preferring a hitter’s park suited to burnish his HOF credentials.

And I think we need Affeldt now with Wilson gone.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 9:14 am

Obviously, we don’t know if he would have signed for that. We didn’t know that Wilson would be out for the year either. But second guessing is hardly discouraged here- and I’d take having Beltran/Torres over Pagan/Affeldt any ole day.

Plenty to argue about in sabes off season moves, but Melk is a no doubt success so far. He’s great defensively and hits a lot of balls very hard, even the ground outs. The HRs he hits are line drive rockets that usually barely clear a fence. And that double to drive in belt was a line smash down LF line that he hustled into extra bases.
This has nothing to do with who we gave up/what he is doing or who used to be here but is now playing elsewhere. I really don’t like the stopgap type of moves; I’d rather sign someone you can build around that will solidify a spot you won’t have to worry about for a few years. While the rest of OF is up for grabs, Melk looks solid.

  7. willieD's avatar willieD said, on May 13, 2012 at 9:26 am

Something I’ve wondered about re: latin ballplayers is if there is a negative stigma attached to playing at ATT because of the weather. We all know what summer is like in SF, particularly if you are near the water and out at night; it’s just so different from almost anywhere else in all of baseball save maybe Seattle. The lack of humidity is sure comforting compared to east coast/midwest, I just wonder if guys would rather play where it’s sunnier and warmer than sf…. which isn’t hard to find.

  8. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 9:29 am

I liked Melky, as I said when the trade was made. I just thought we were awfully thin in starting pitching and would preferred they had done a different package. But as far as building around Melky, it’s no given he’s here next year. He’ll be a free agent and if he continues his big year, he’ll have a lot of suitors.

Btw, I recall seeing someone here make predictions Cahill would do well and win a lot of games for the DBs…he was the shits last night. He also leaves a lot of balls up, which isn’t going to be a good thing in that yard. sure he’ll get more support than in Oakland, but unless the pen is really good, I doubt he cracks .500.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 13, 2012 at 10:24 am

I’ll preface this by saying I wasn’t the one that made predictions about what Cahill would do or wouldn’t do for the Dbacks . . . He was the shits last night willieD, but four of his seven starts have been quality ones, so he has been good more often than not. Cahill has a 3.65 ERA on the season, however he has just 25 strikeouts to 18 walks in his 44 1/3 innings, a ratio he will need to improve if he wants to start pitching better. He is posting extreme groundball rates on the season, which helps him keep the ball in the yard, a skill he will need when he travels to Colorado on Thursday for his next start.

You’re also wrong about his support, i.e., the DBacks have scored less than 3 runs in the 4 quality starts I mentioned. So, if he fails to “crack .500” it may be more due to the fact that Cahill has been the victim of some bad support. Again, I could give a rat’s ass how Cahill does, but facts are facts and Cahill hasn’t been half bad this season.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 12:36 pm

I’m sure Willie was referring to his support over the year, not just to date. I don’t know of too many people who expect Oakland to hit better than Arizona. That 18-25 BB/K rate is, as someone else says, “underwhelming”.

    • St's avatar St said, on May 13, 2012 at 10:27 am

Early still, but that’s looking like one of Beane’s better trades with Parker and Cook off to great starts.

Cahill has been ok this year, I’d also go with *not half bad* as a description. I thought he’s have a big year. He was terrible last night–seemed to be lacking mental focus. Not sure why.

    • willieD's avatar willieD said, on May 13, 2012 at 10:39 am

as blade pointed out, his saber stats aren’t bad at all, except for the K/BB ratio. DBs make curious trades sometimes–FG ran an article off season about how kubel wasn’t going to give them much more than Parra, had bad splits and was terrible defensively. Last year they got lucky with the hill for johnson deal; see if Hill does for them what he did last year ( and couldn’t do for Toronto). Edwin Jax is long gone too.

  14. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 13, 2012 at 10:35 am

Culberson? Uninspiring. But if they are bailing on Burriss it couldn’t hurt to take a look. hey, if they are keeping Burriss on the team to basically be a PR at this point why not ditch him and have Freddy be nothing but a pinch hitter? It worked for Manny Mota. I mean shit, we are paying the guy anyway. Have him do something useful like pinch hit, something I bet he’d be pretty decent at………

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on May 13, 2012 at 11:23 am

If they “ditch” Burris who is out of options some team would probably pick him up.No big deal to me but maybe try and trade him for a prospect first, even if its just some low AA guy.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 11:59 am

Even if they keep him, Crawford can only play SS, Theriot is hitting .179, Gillaspie has been a disaster. I can’t see why they would dump Burriss. They need a couple players who can play in the field as back ups. Barring injury or a sudden turn around from Crawford, the starting infield when Panda returns will be Belt, Culberson, Arias, Pablo. Burriss would be one reserve and and your Taster’s Choice of Theriot, Gillaspie, Bond, or Noonan.

  15. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on May 13, 2012 at 10:36 am

if you had Blanco, Arias, Pill, Hector Sanchez and Culberson all starting on May 13, like Trevor Denman says…
    Go to the window!

RF Blanco, 3B Arias, LF Melky, 1B Pill, CF Pagan, C Sanchez, 2B Culberson, SS Crawford, P Zito.

  16. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on May 13, 2012 at 10:40 am

  17. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 11:05 am

Culberson coming up should be no surpise at all. With Theriot below the Crawford Line and on the DL and Manny maintaining his zero extra base streak, this was expected. Culberson does have some pop at least. Our middle infield has been a total embarrasment offensively, this is one of the few cases where “it can’t be worse” holds true.

  18. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 13, 2012 at 11:08 am

Well, the Giants must have been listening to my rant yesterday wanting changes NOW. At least half of it. Crawford is still at SS, only because they have essentially no other options. Culberson for Burriss, OK, whatever. Gillaspie had to go, because he has options, Burriss does not. If Burriss turns into a glorified PRunner, that’s a waste of a roster spot on a hitting challenged team. We’ll see if Culberson turns into the usual Giants AAA player– a AAAA player — or is more serviceable than that. If he can freekin block a bad throw from the OFer, he’s moving forward…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 13, 2012 at 11:24 am

Flav’s 10:35am makes sense too – Giants could bring Glass up to pitch hit. Not ideal, but at least he could continue his rehab with the team and feel like he is part of what’s going on. As you said snarkk, if Burris is going to be a “glorified PRunner,” then it’s a waste of a roster spot. At a certain point, the Giants need to fish or cut bait with Sanchez. If he can pitch hit, at least that’s something . . . If not, thank you very much for your part in winning the World Series, but we are moving on . . . Here’s your watch and good luck on your future endeavors.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 11:35 am

I’m not sure why it would be expected that Freddy would still be a good hitter after the injury, or good enough to take a roster spot when he can’t run or field. If he can’t play in the field, that would be the wasted roster spot. Manny is at least versatile and speed plays out in more ways than just the stolen base. Anyway, obviously I was wrong about Culberson coming up when I spoke of it yesterday. I said “soon”, not “tomorrow”..

  19. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 11:17 am

As I’ve posted several times, Posey playing first is one of the major causes of our defensive problems. Hopefully this is a sign they might abandon it. The only way Pill was not going to play LF was if they scrapped the Posey experiment. Whether it’s Pill or Belt at first, the entire infield defense is better, and LF is better. UImfortunately, this is probably just a day after night deal. BTW, Belt should still get the majority of starts at first, but Pill does need some.

    http://calltothepen.com/2012/05/13/san-francisco-giants-and-philadelphia-phillies-looking-at-kevin-youkilis/

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 11:44 am

If he has anything left, Youklis makes some sense because he’s played the OF, albeit not for a long while. That shouldn’t bother anyone who doesn’t want Pill or Huff out there. And obviously he could platoon with Belt. But it would need to be for a small price, he’s on a downward road.

The situations when the manager uses (and should use) his closer in a non-save situation are when it’s a tie game in the 9th inning or later at home or when he needs the work. Neither was the case today, so as usual Dennis has no case…

Can someone please find the statistics on Denny’s “case”? All we ever hear about it is when it happens in a way that supports this “case”. Now that he has rested the case, maybe it’s time for some numbers. Hanrahan pitched in a non save situation today, did fine. Myers pitched in a save op, blew it. Discussing this shit one situation at a time doesn’t seem to prove anything

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 13, 2012 at 5:05 pm

As I alluded to earlier with my FL post, my two closers fucked up big time, so his case is still being deliberated by the jurors and coupled with the judge being a hanging type of jurist, Dennis’s case is far from closed.

  59. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 13, 2012 at 5:14 pm

I haven’t paid super close attention to all the details of the case but didn’t the case have something to do with never using your closer in a tie game at home? Because if that’s the “case” and the result is that you aren’t allowed to use arguably your best relief pitcher at home in extra innings, then I think this case might have a few holes in it…

  60. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 5:19 pm

You’d have to break it down to the situations I listed. There’s no comparison at all in the tie game situation and one where the team has a big lead. .In ALL non-save situations, closers do generally fare worse. But all non-save situations are not the same. This is something known by the intelligent observer.

In ALL non-save situations Wilson is 13-10 with a 3.39 ERA career
    He’s 7-10 3.12 in save situations.
In other words, he would give up 6 more runs in his entire career if he pitched the same in save and non-save situations.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 13, 2012 at 5:24 pm

Hi, girls. My trip to Philly was wonderful, proudly seeing my daughter Evelyn Kocak soar [literally, properly used] in the female lead role as Wendy in the ballet “Peter Pan.” A review and picture in the Philadelphia Inquirer: http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment/150254605.html. Did so much walking along South Street and elsewhere I got blisters [“I got blisters on me fingers!” — John Lennon, The White Album].

On the bus ride back to Syracuse, the young gal in front of me sported an SF cap, one of those made to look worn out. “Are from San Francisco?” “I lived there for a year,” she answered. “That’s my team,” I tell her. Then she was kind enough to offer me the Philly Inquirer sports section. I concluded it has to have some of the best sports coverage in the nation. Brisk writing; comprehensive reports; terrific analysis. I was very struck by this column about the Phils’ hitting woes. Wow! In may ways, same exact issues as the Giants. Check it out. http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/151273455.html

Incidentally, the Phils just brought up Little Lord Mike Fontenotleroy from the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs [don’t you love that name?]. He was asked about his memories of Citizens Bank Park. Oh, yeah, 3-2 clincher in 2010! Other than that he was prudently diplomatic.

  67. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 6:41 pm

And regardless of the closer’s record in non-save situations, one would not have a relevent statistic without knowing how a different pitcher would fare.

The Albert Pujols Watch is getting interesting. With 20% of the season in the books, he’s on pace for 5 bombs, 48 runs scored, 52 rbi’s, and a .195 batting average. Of course, he DOES have 8 doubles which would translate to 38 for the season. Not bad at all for a good major leaguer but shy of what he would put up in previous years. btw, that would mean that Crawford is on pace for 38 doubles, too…….

Best-selling author [and I believe former MLBer] Dirk Hayhurst tweeted this about 4 mins ago:

“lack of production in the saves department is regrettable, but I don’t think a “set” closer is really as effective as it sounds in theory.”

plus he earlier said Blue Jays have the pen and the “information” to close by committee.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 13, 2012 at 7:21 pm

While some closers are obviously better than others, in baseball as a whole, teams leading after 8 won as often 100 years ago as they do now. The change to the set closer has not meant better results.

Checked out Culberson’s Dad’s numbers. Never made the bigs, had a decent minor league career but almost all in “a” ball, 84 thru 88.He was an OFer with no power but good speed. In ’87 he had his best year, hitting .320 with 47 stolen bases. That got him a promotion to AA in 1988, which was to be his last year. Don’t know if it was injury or just not enought talent.

Reminded me of Dirty’s father, seeing him tear up when his son’s name was announced, a MAJOR LEAGUER!

that’s cool. I just looked them up, too. As I understood it on the radio today (and I might be wrong about the details because I only heard it once and the innings I did see today were sans sound), Culberson got the call at 2am that he was promoted to the show and he called his family to tell them and they jumped on a plane and made it to the game (though as I’m typing this, it now seems more likely that he called his FAMILY at 2am that he got promoted to the show and then they got their shit together and flew out a few hours later). Whatever. The whole family gets from Florida to Arizona in less than 12 hours and they’re in their seats for the game? AND his mom is pretty fuckable?
