A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

How Did This Happen Again?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 5, 2012

I still don’t understand how Sandoval got fat again. It’s not like he had to travel to Club Med to find the greatest hamate bone specialist the world has ever known. He’s been HERE the entire time. He’s been in the freaking dugout waving rally towels. It’s incomprehensible to me that the Giants are just now reacting to this problem.

I understand that The Panda is an adult and needs to be accountable for his actions, etc. And after thinking it over, I now agree completely with what others said on the thread last night—don’t play him until he’s ready. Send a clear message to him and the team that you take your job seriously, act professionally or you don’t play at this level. Got it. I’m on board. Besides, we are 19-12 since he went down. It’s not like the Giants can’t win without him.

But this fine *message* that’s been sent doesn’t make up for the fact that the team remained silent while Pablo was powering through half the post game spreads game after game and did nothing about it. My God, if Bochy ever needed a reason to *flip the spread* after every game THIS was it! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

But even if I look past the food addiction problem that he obviously has I don’t see why the team trainer wasn’t on this guy’s ass to participate in a serious cardio program every single day that he’s been out. It’s his hand that was hurt, not his legs. If he wouldn’t listen to the trainer then Bochy and Sabean could have said “Dude, go run your stairs. NOW”. And it’s not like he ballooned up overnight. If they witnessed this happening over the course of his month on the DL then they should have said something to him way before Saturday. There should have been a plan in place the day he went down to prevent this weight gain from happening.

The team showed him a lot of faith in the off season when they game him a 3 year/18 million dollar deal. They didn’t have to do it, they could have kept going year to year during his last few arbitration years. Sandoval clearly has not reciprocated the same faith with his half assed approach to maintaining the conditioning necessary to be a professional baseball player. In hindsight, the Giants should have written something into the contract that would allow them to void it if he ever succumbed to his food addiction again. Drug addict athletes have to have to have stipulations like this written into their deals, food addicts should be treated the same way. Do any of you think there won’t be something written into Josh Hamilton’s monster deal that says if he falls off the wagon the deal is voided? Book it, that will be in there.

We all love Pablo Sandoval for what he does on the baseball field. But during the last week he taken some major blows to his personal and public image. After he signed that deal last Winter it was universally supported by everyone. Little did we know, it turned him into this guy:

He still has time to be this guy:

But to do so he better get his ass re-focused on his craft, start acting like a professional and drop the fucking weight. Again……

    Weatherproof games: Braves-Marlins, Cardinals-Astros, Cubs-Brewers and Rockies-Diamondbacks

Tuesday appears to be an excellent weather day for baseball as rain chances are slim to none in most parts of the country. Rays-Yankees and Orioles-Red Sox might experience a passing shower around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, but it’s nothing that will end either game prematurely.

Scientific studies have confirmed that for the main act of intercourse, most calorie-burning estimates range from 100 to 200. When it comes to foreplay, it’s the time you actually spend fooling around that counts. A 150-pound person will burn about 25 calories for every 15 minutes of foreplay. Since Pablo doesn’t spend time with foreplay, we can’t add these 25 calories to his exercise regimen.

It is kind of surprising no one said, “Hey, Pablo is gonna be out for a month or so. wonder what’s gonna happen?” I used to tell kids I was mad at if you do something stupid you just signed yourself up for the lecture series. Sounds to me like Pablo just got enrolled in boot camp with nutrionist on the side.
I hate cardio, but I have to do it or my clothes won’t fit…and I’m at least 100-125 lbs lighter than sando. It’s not just about weight, it’s the bigger picture about living healthier lifestyle and being fit enough to enjoy what you do.

If he’s out of shape then he’s got to be worked on until he can play. It may take weeks. His teammates will know the truth if he’s too fat to play.

Perhaps he’s made for the DH position that only the AL can provide.

Think it definitely made an impression being told he’d be be busted back to Fresno unless he lost some weight…38lbs in 3 months after he gets the 3 yr extension, he gains weight and hangs out in bars.Sounds like a guy in his 20’s to me.

I was one of the ones who said that until he’s fit enough to play 3rd base, he should not be activated. I was surprised at Craig’s reaction- as I’d always been charactized as a Panda “apologist”. I’d been expecting “pre-grief”
for some imaginary excuse I’d make for him. So here’s the “real deal”. The young man had personal issues in 2010, the kind that can negatively affect any of us. He deserved some slack and most people gave it to him. Then came
warnings to get in shape or else- and he was *mostly* in compliance. But he gained weight through out the 2011 season, somewhat more during the winter- but Bochy talked out of sides of his mouth on Pablo’s weight- he had a ways to go, no, he looks good, etc. We (and ) they were watching a video of that “after” guy going the opther way- and the team was doing nothing about it. Then comes the injury and evidently significant weight gain- and it’s only after this criminal matter that they’re addressing the weight issue. I’m not going to go into whether he has a “food addiction” and whether he’s sick, not just a piggy at table… and another thing should be set straight- the team did him no favors by buying out his arb years- they made a business decision- he would have made far more in arb than he’s getting. So here’s the bottom line-he’s a member of a team and by being out of condition to play at his best, he’s taking money of the pockets of his teammates. He was treated properly after the 2010 season, and even though the team should have monitored this “recurrance” better, he’s a man, a man who is a part of a group who depend on one another- ultimately it is Pablo Sandoval who is responsible for his actions.. as Snarrk said, the team was remiss in not properly protecting their investment, if nothing else. *We* may identify with these athletes as great, mediocre, or poor players..but to the folks in the board room, they are “product”, and it’s just stupid business to let your product deteriorate…

“Then comes the injury and evidently significant weight gain- and it’s only after this criminal matter that they’re addressing the weight issue.”

Sorry twin, I didn’t see this before I posted. I also find the timing of the latest weight issue, to be suspect.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 5, 2012 at 8:55 am

Just to expand on something- what the Giants did with Pablo with his new deal *does* benefit him in case of the injury, but it’s not done as “Thanks, Pablo, here’s some money we didn’t have to give you”. It’s for two basic reasons:
No team wants to go through the arb process with a star player and
      2. They do it when the player is likely to make more if they don’t buy out his arb years

  8. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 5, 2012 at 8:37 am

If the weight is the issue then yes, I agree the Giants brass and staff saw it. I’m thinking there may already be a weight clause in the contract and they were turning a blind eye to it until another little problem came up. Heavy ass partying probably didn’t make it in the fine print of the contract so the Giants are using what they can. I don’t know if any of that is really what’s happening, but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me.
But what I’m really starting to get pissed off about is the way the Brass has been using the press to get the word out. Why call the player into a closed door meeting, so the press and players can’t hear what’s being said and then drop the dime on the player at the first interview? Why not just yell out “hey lard butt get over on that stationary bike” in the middle of the locker room?
I do agree they shouldn’t bring him off the DL until he’s in “shape” to play at that level. But if you think Fresno is a great place to lose weight, you haven’t been there. I suspect super size everything (food, clothes etc) were invented in Fresno.

  9. Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on June 5, 2012 at 8:46 am

Weight issue is a national problem. It affects all types of people. Unfortunately for Pablo, he makes his living with his body. He’s got to stay in shape somehow, someway. He knows this so perhaps he has bigger problems that the public has no idea about. Obviously, his will power is not working.

Perhaps the happy fun loving Panda image is just that. Players are people first and a dark side can appear in private.

I am stoked about this Stratton pick, looks like a steal. No reason he does not start at AA next year and maybe pushes into AAA and possibily into the rotation in 2014.

Will be interested to see if anybody responded to my question of whether someone came asking for zito, would we be willing to trade him this year.

The management should have Melky have a sit down with Panda and explain how thin the line is between fucking up ones career and staying dedicated to the immense talent that they have been given…

Giants power numbers (i/e lack of HRs, esp at home) don’t bother me. Other than at Petco, SF will hit better on the road and show more pop in hitter friendly yards, duh. conversely, other teams with more pop will not duplicate those stats built up at home parks when they come to ATT. Cubs did hit a couple out this weekend, but lost every single time despite getting mostly pretty good pitching. Most of that falls on their defense, esp the LF, quite unlike SF which got excellent D and no HRs.
On the cbs site cubs mgr. Sveum made some very negative comments about starlin castro and his decision not to throw to 1b that cost his team a run…nothing on soriano all weekend. Maybe he just expects more out of the kid, and realizes he is stuck with soriano and has to play him per mgmt.
One of the most interesting chapters in the B-P “Btw the numbers” from 2006 is the chapter on Kevin Maas and projections for players as they age, from early 20s to late 30s re: PECOTA factors.. Here’s one quote, p.261-2:
“Another such relationship is btw walk rate and isolated power. Taking a lot of walks is an indication ofworking deep into the count, where batteers tend to hit for most of their power; a player with a good walk rate but middling power numberes is a good candidate to see his HR output improve the following season.”

Ok, my Zito question was not so much a question of whether someone would actually trade for him (I agree not likely ever to happen), but whether if someone were to make an offer, do you think the Giants would actually make the trade. Has Zito now become indispensible???

Question of money is quite prominent, but let’s say youklis was in the discussion and he is making $12 mill anyway this year. So that is what about $8 mill difference or $4 mill if a trade happened half way through the season, so the Red Sox would have to eat just $4 mill more and then Zito’s 2013 salary. Even though I always commented that zito sucks (who has not agreed with that over the last 5 years), I always said I can still see him being a capable starter for the AL. If he can get 7 innings in an AL start and give up 5-6 runs, the Red Sox and many other AL teams would still be in the game…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 5, 2012 at 9:25 am

With Timmy struggling right now, and the lack of viable options in SP in the org, I don’t think they Giants would move Zito right now. Certainly not for Youklis. I think it would have to be one of those “deals you cannot refuse” (and I don’t see that type of offer being synonimous with a Zito trade offer).

  13. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 5, 2012 at 9:23 am

Well, who knows what (or where – behind closed doors, in the clubhouse, etc.) type of conversations have happened between the brass (coaches, etc.) and Pablo. Regardless, if there has been any dialogue, it has obviously not been effective. Given this, maybe by putting it in the press, the hope is that it sets a fire under his ass (public humiliation).

Whatever the situation, I do agree that his fat ass must get in shape before he steps back onto the field for Los Gigantes. Fresno, the land of “supersize everything” (per John)…tough shit…go down there and get your fat ass into shape.

I too like the Stratton signing. Baseball America had him rated 18th.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 5, 2012 at 9:48 am

Bochy said he talked to him in his office on Saturday, which was the day after Pablo was questioned by the Santa Cruz cops. We don’t know what was said, this is true. If he had said that he had the talk with Pablo about some issues and he wasn’t ready to be activated, I’d be cool with that. But to go to the press and say he’s out of shape and can’t play at this level, even if true, is bogus IMO.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 5, 2012 at 10:30 am

John – I don’t think Pablo is not the first to be dragged through the press. I do not necessarily agree with it as a mode of communication/motivation, but maybe they have been on Pablo, and just felt that this (publicizing the issue) would get his attention. Bottom line, regardless of how they get the desired results (his ass in shape and focused on baseball), the important thing is that they get the results.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 5, 2012 at 11:48 am

That’s true Chuck. As you can tell, it’s just something that’s been bugging me lately and the Giants probably aren’t the only team using this strategy (I don’t know). I know my reaction to getting called out in public like that would probably have had me traded.
With the rape charge, I’d imagine that Pablo has a bit more on his plate than what he’s eating (pun only slightly intended).

  14. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 5, 2012 at 9:26 am

When someone brought up that my road numbers weren’t vaild because they didn’t take into account pitcher friendly parks like Petco, I did what I usually do- checked it out. Last year they scored 42 runs in 9 games at Petco, 41 in 9 games at LA. 8 HR at Petco, 10 in LA. In short- they ae valid. It should just be taken as fact when I point out that it is flat wrong to say this team is subpar offensively. Even last year they were 7th in runs away from SF, 6th in 2010. This year they are 4th. What does this mean besides the obvious ( that they are actually a slightly above average hitting team) ? It means they will now score 3 runs in 3 games at Petco this week..

  15. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 5, 2012 at 9:27 am

GH, I still think the only team that would trade for Zito is the A’s (Zito might even wave his no-trade for that). The Giants get any player(s) they want and as a “favor” to the Giants the A’s would take on the Zitoman contract. As a “favor” to the A’s (and a wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more Bud), the Giants give up the rights to San Jose.

    • Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on June 5, 2012 at 9:36 am

Giants will NEVER give up their rights to SJ willingly. The A’s are on their last legs in the Bay Area. The endgame is coming. Only SJ will save their sorry asses.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 5, 2012 at 11:02 am

John, this is a no brainer – I agree with Nipper that the Giants will NEVER willingly give up their rights to the South Bay area. Those rights are worth exponentially more than Zito’s contract. The A’s only chance for those rights are if the “car salesman” screws the Giants.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 5, 2012 at 12:01 pm

Steve, I know guys have been traded for cases of beer and stuff but at the ML level trading a player for rights to a location might be frowned on. I know I’ve used the joke to often in the past, but my point is that would probably be the only way the Giants didn’t eat part of the contract.

Nipper, I’m aware the Giants won’t give up the rights willingly or without the proper buyout. I’ve been following this for years (including going back through most of the history of the San Jose rights, the Giants paperwork for the new stadium etc.). Xoot and I used to discuss it quite a bit back when he posted here.

Great day at the ballyard yesterday. It was a bit misty early on, but the sun busted through eventually.
Giants are playing good D lately. Hopefully that keeps going on. Excellent pitching.
Good ABs by the Giants in getting the Cubs starter into a high pitchcount early on. He was a bit wild, but he had good stuff. He wasn’t easy to hit, and the Giants got him out of there. And a nice job from Vogey in limiting the damage in his early bad inning. The 2-run inning didn’t become a 4 or 5-run inning, and it kept the Giants in the game. That’s something we need to see more of from Timmy. Limit the damage in a rocky inning.
Lunch was sammiches from a Quzno’s we came across along the way. And dinner afterwards was Korean BBQ again at the Metreon foodcourt.

“If he can get 7 innings in an AL start and give up 5-6 runs..” at 5 runs he would have a 6.42 ERA. Funny stuff, GH. Seriously, though, he is now worth more to us than any player could he possibly fetch. If we paid all of his contract, we still couldn’t get a MLB player or top prospect for him. You see, we can *hope* his success continues, a MLB GM would base it on the chances that it will. It’s about as likely as getting killed by a bolt of lightning..

A 6.42 era in the AL can get him 20 wins:). Well ok, the old AL. I still agree that does not seems likely…but Zito’s starts are can’t miss tv…

  18. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 5, 2012 at 11:49 am

BF sums it up nicely, IMO, re Pablo. Maybe the Giants HAVE been on his ass re: weight, and he’s not responding? Hence the unusually public rebuke by Bochy? If not, I don’t understand how they just witness his girth grow under their noses and then all of a sudden realize he’s tubby, and then Bochy gives him a public tongue lashing about it — that doesn’t make sense. Unless our local scribes do a rare bit of detective work, we won’t know all that’s been happening on the inside. I think the front office should immediately send him back to Arizona for ten days to two weeks of boot camp — intensive cardio/agility training and weight loss and back onto a healthy eating regimen. Maybe a few psych sessions on compulsive eating habits might help, too, if they haven’t done that. Supposedly he won’t be able to hit both ways for a while anyway, so why not? Get his ass in shape so he can hit both ways and has more range than a rhino when he gets back, and doesn’t need oxygen going first to third. While he’s back in AZ and when he’s back in SF, I don’t know why they wouldn’t appoint him a personal chef with a strict calorie count, a dude that cooks his meals AND chaperones him. I’m serious. That’s taking care of an investment. If his mama wants to cook for him, great. She can cook her ass off daily, he just only eats her stuff one meal a week. I’m more disappointed in Pablo than angry. I thought this guy had learned his lesson, but he hasn’t. Twice now, he’s showed a lack of respect for his teammates and his contract — that is especially troubling. I always got on Rohand for his performance, but I never doubted that the guy worked and was in shape — he was crap and wouldn’t change his ways, but he never disrespected the game and his teammates, and himself as a pro. Pablo can still be the happy go lucky guy, but this man/child needs to grow up, and now. For kreissakes, this is the damn big leagues…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 5, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Well, what’s more important in what Craig said is that he acknoweldged what is most important here- that Pablo is the one responsible for his predicament. We all know that management failed to monitor his conditioning and bear some responsibility- but that’s really a different issue- and it’s not at all clear that it would even be legal to appoint a personal chef and “chaperone” who Sandoval would have any obligation to “obey”. I pointed out his obligation to his teammates, and obviously to himself. The team certainly has the right to make demands as to his weight and conditioning, and *offer* counseling, dietary advice, etc. but this isn’t a totalitarian state or Goodell’s NFL- there are
limits to what they can or should do to force compliance. One tool they do have is the most effective one anyway- meet the terms set out as to conditioning or you don’t play until you do.

Maybe it’s a good crop of pitchers. If they’re quality, then I don’t see a problem with it. I want to see the Giants maintain dominance in pitching above all else. It will keep them a playoff contending team year in and year out. And it’s only one year’s draft. Other years can be different.

Have not been following the Panda weight-watcher watching but knew something was up by Bochy’s clear and not even coded message about not being ready to play third. It all seems like a mess. Why can’t we have a bunch of white guys with crew cuts who always behave? [insert sarcastic-ironic-Yankees-mocking emoticon].

” the Giants have picked 7 pitchers in the first 8 rounds”…with Linecum’s future effectiveness now in doubt, Zito being Zito, Surkamp evidently making zero progress from his injury, 29 YO Eric Hacker now their top starting pitcher “prospect”.. sounds like excellent draft stragy.

Although I haven’t been on board with Pagan, he’s convinced me at the plate, anyway. So if they sign him and Melky, they should have a pretty fair LU if Pablo gets it together ( or see below) and Belt progresses as most think he will. That’s a lot of “ifs”, isn’t it?
Speaking with our dear Gordito, I’ll bet they’re just praying for a good year at the plate and Adios, Pablito…

  31. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 5, 2012 at 4:36 pm

To say Pablo is at fault for chasing biscuits is pretty hilarious. Zito probably nailed about 3,000 women on his various road trips. Pat the Bat (where’d that nickname come from?) likely hit 3,000 in his 1/2 season of Giants ball. And these guys pale in comparison to NBA players.

As I said before the season started, Zito’s improvement this year is directly tied to his lack of chasing tail. He’s directing his energies and his precious bodily fluids to pitching, not beaver hunting.

I don’t blame Pablo for banging some bar chick, Chuck. But if Zito banged 3000 of them how come he never got stuck in this public predicament? I read somewhere that this chick said it wasn’t consensual because she was too drunk to communicate consent. You think Zito’s been in the same boat? Of course he has. Did he still bang the chick? Maybe. Or he went and found one that wasn’t so drunk she actually knew what her name was.
Did Pablo just run into some vindictive chick? Did he rape her? Or did he just make the wrong call and go to far with someone who clearly was too fucked up? I dunno I wasn’t there. But there is a reason other than luck that Zito’s bagged 3000 of them and Panda is stuck in this situation.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 5, 2012 at 5:29 pm

Well Zito did go out with Paris Hilton. Was she too drunk to communicate consent? Well that’s kind of a loaded question.
Whatever, I’ll let the DA decide if they need to continue with a trial or not. Right now, for me anyway, it’s about the team taking the field – Go get em Giants.

Don’t take it the wrong way, Flav, but the verbiage on this post kind of cracks me up. Like one of those conservative radio talk show hosts: “Did he boink a blitzed bimbo? I couldn’t say for sure. Did have unlawful carnal knowledge with a co-ed? Probably not. But I don’t know. I wasn’t there.Could he have used a little cock-eyed discretion? Maybe. We won’t know till the facts come out.”

Just read Snarkk’s 11:49am post–Kuip answered it this morning this way (paraphrasing): if you’re Bochy, you start by pulling them aside and talking to them privately. If they don’t respond, you uP the ante, and now Bochy has made it public.” that was the first I’ve heard that they have been dealing addressing this all along and obviously, that is at least something to like. I thought they were just dealing with it this Sat. Anyway, to me, that’s just more evidence that Pablo has to grow up and take job seriously. It also wouldnt be the biggest stretch to connect this to his personal life too.

Well, it’s not racist or “ethicnist”, or whathetver you would call it, to guess that Pablo probably hangs at different bars than the Zitster. I think I read something where the Zitman was at the bar of some expensive restaurant and Lincecum came to join him and the manager had to have the Zitter vouch for him ( they thought Lincecum was homeless).. anyway, I’m not really going anywhere with this except..why don’t the cops just ask Righetti? He was there, wasn’t he πŸ˜‰

  49. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on June 5, 2012 at 7:48 pm

If the offense would score 5 or 6 runs in each of Timmy’s games to balance out his usual-case one blow-up inning, wouldn’t need to do anything. If they also had another pitcher ready to step in for 2 or 3 starts, could create a Zito-esque phantom injury, DL him for a couple of weeks, and send him back to Washington to work with his Dad, chill out in the Cascades, and relax with whatever tasty things make him happy. Whether it’s mechanics, a physical problem, or a mental problem, it doesn’t matter anymore. He’s a liability and he needs to get fixed.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 5, 2012 at 7:57 pm

  54. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on June 5, 2012 at 8:07 pm

The talk about trading Zito is a non-starter; as others said already, he’s more valuable pitching for the Giants than anyone they could get for him (and no one would trade for him anyway, he being Zito). Timmy, on the other hand, despite his grotesque performances and stats this year, is not valuable pitching for the Giants anymore but would probably net something in return. But again, they probably wouldn’t trade him unless they have a replacement, which at this point they don’t.
