Rounding Out the Stable
I know I said yesterday was my *final post* and that was dramatic and everything but as I hand over the reigns to The Stable Boys I’m going to have to take care of some loose ends first.
As I said yesterday, I want 10-12 editors to handle the daily threads. I currently have accepted the *applications* of 9 esteemed Flappers who want to keep this place going so badly they are willing to pen their daily thoughts for your reading consumption. I will post a thread introducing The Stable when it’s completely filled.
I want to add at least 1 more *esteemed colleague* (and maybe up to 3 more) before I leave. So if you enjoy and read the blog regularly and your grasp of English (or at least the ability to construct a sentence) is at a break even level, email me with your interest.
bigflavor77@gmail.com
Once we fill the stable, I’ll create an email group (that I will be part of) that will be used to communicate with each other (who’s going to post next, topic ideas, BBOTD nominees 🙂 , etc). By the way, make sure it’s an email address you won’t mind others in the stable seeing/using.
Stepping down, that’s too bad, even though I understand it. you have my utmost respect, writing a column everyday is very hard work. I will say that I compare this blog to reading Herb Caen everyday in the Chron, when he had to give it up due to cancer it was a sad, sad day. Glad you offering to let Flappers write and keep the blogg alive. There are a few here that can do it. One question though, if you only get the nine will you just shut it down? 9 seems plenty. But I know that is up to you. I wish I was a stat guy and knew baseball like the rest here. I would give it a shot, but alas writing is not in me. Anyway, I see your posts over on FaceBook so I know what you are up to. You are one cool dude!!, oh one more question, does this mean this is the last year of Flapper Fantasy Baseball?
Flapper Kevin
Hey Kev– thanks. I hadn’t considered it before but you are right, I am just like Herb Caen. 🙂
I’m sure I’ll continue the Flap Fantasy league. And if we only get 9 it’ll still work but the more the better.
Yeah and you can appreciate the fact that he did it for a good 40+ years!!
The comparison is that Caen wrote about everything SF, the good the bad and the ugly. He wrote when the City was doing the right thing and wrote when he felt the City was wrong. You write about the Giants good, bad and ugly, and when they are going right and when they are F*cking up!! Good job. I wish Caen had a column now I would love to see some of the comments people would write. He was one of the best.
Craig – I was out of pocket over the weekend (had my grand daughter), and spent time with my lady and my daughter yesterday for Father’s Day, so when I hit the site this morning ready to tear into some Giant baseball discussion, I was surprised.
As Kevin says, I get it (writing a thread every day), and respect your decision. You have done a wonderful job. I remember when most of the old timers were regulars on The Splash, and your invitation to this blog when you were just getting it off the ground. I was the one who steered Blade this way those many moons ago, and he is one of the Flappers with whom I have connected not only at Giants games, but also when I was in Denver on business.
I do love this site and the interactions, and I agree…this site is like family. There are the disagreements, etc., but at the end of the day, everyone comes around, is civil (most of the time 😉 ), and we get back on track talking about that one passion we all share in common…baseball, and especially (as you say) “OUR” San Francisco Giants.
I do believe there are enough here (hopefully you get the full complement of 12) to keep this place going. It has become such an important part of many of our lives that it would SUCK to see it go away. (I really just cannot imagine life without it, and I mean that in all seriousness.)
This truly is the grandest collection of Giants fans I have ever come across, and I am glad to be (and hopefully continue to be) a part of it.
Thanks again, Flavor…you kick ass! LONG LIVE THE FLAP!!
thanks Chi. When you came back after your *hiatus* this place got a lot better. It looks like we are at 11 right now and I might go ahead and be #12 just to fill gaps and stuff (should any arise). I’ll send out an emailing confirming that all 12 of us are committed to being reliable stable boys and we’ll go from there.
You are SO right, Ted. Flavor has done a fantastic job of standing-up and managing this blog. This place is like home.
LMAO on the Bryn Mawr reference…I remember that from The Splash. What the hell was “her” name? Too damned funny…
Oops…got this in the wrong spot. And thanks for the kind words, Craig. Yeah…that was a fucked-up time (my hiatus)…was going through some relationship stuff (fucking women!), but this place was regularly on my mind. There absolutely IS NOT a better place to discuss Giants baseball..and for that, I am grateful.
Well, it goes without saying (so I’ll say it) that no one can “replace” Flavor but hopefully the Stable Boys chosen can continue the tradition to an acceptable level of thoughtful, entertaining topics and enticing threads.
In other words, none of them are Bryn Mawr students
You are SO right, Ted. Flavor has done a fantastic job of standing-up and managing this blog. This place is like home.
LMAO on the Bryn Mawr reference…I remember that from The Splash. What the hell was “her” name? Too damned funny…
Sorry for the double post…wanted to to be in the right spot.
(deja vu)
hugs her ted! Giggle – Soph
Ah yes! Soph…and many thought that Soph was Nipper/Nipper-Soph. That was some funny shit.
Well, having several authors should be a good thing-as I said on the last thread, it’s no disrespect to Flavor to excpect that the blog will even better with new voices- any of the people I can imagine contributing are excellent writers and good thinkers. That it will not be the same doesn’t mean it won’t be as good.
Weatherproof games: Royals-Astros, Blue Jays-Brewers, Mariners-Diamondbacks.
There are just six major league stadiums hosting games without a retractable roof Monday, and four of the six are expected to have clear skies and comfortable temperatures in the high 60s or low 70s. The two Midwest games will be hotter, as Cubs-White Sox is expected to be in the mid-80s at first pitch, with winds surpassing 15 mph, while the Reds-Indians matchup is looking at high-70s temperatures with 10 mph winds.
Always good to have a bullpen to handle the rest of the game, Craig. Or in this case, a penpen. 🙂
Flav, I want to thank you for the incredible time and effort you’ve put into making this not only the best SF Giants blog but one of the best blogs period, and for establishing a place to call home for this longtime East Coast Giants fan. IMO you’ve been on top of your game with some of your posts this season, but I completely understand your need to take a step back and let others run the show. I’ve no doubt everything will work out with the new format. The Giants already have one of the best rotations in baseball, and now so will the Flap.
As for the Giants, I’m a bit bummed over the last few days, losing 3 of 4 to two of the dregs of MLB. Now comes the Angels, a series which should be a good test but one I’m also dreading since the ’02 Series will probably be brought up at every turn (at least from the Angels side). The last thing I wanna do is relive that nightmare, which has been dead and buried thanks to the WS title. At least we got Matty going tonight to get us off and running in Anaheim. Go Giants!
Flav is the straw that stirs the drink. You guys may think you can be the straw that stirs the drink but you can only stir it bad…
Reggie Loo
It will be great, especially after they get a few threads on the resumes. Multiple voices, different perspectives, it’s just what this blog needs. You might get a few less POTD’s but you can handle that, right?
Yeah, if anything was rigged about this site, POTD going to Loo every other hou . . . umm, day, was a travesty.
Hehehe . . . 🙂
Yeah Loo, or Flav has been the axle that turns the wheels. “They think they’re big wheels. They don’t know you need an axle to turn the wheels. They don’t know I’m the axle.” – Mario, that owned the liquor store that I had an account with in my teens. He was talking about a waterbed store that had just moved in next door.
When I turned 21, I went up to Mario and told him it was my birthday and that I had just turned 21. He said “Is your tab paid up? Get your usual it’s on the house.”.
LMAO John…good story.
Chuck I forgot the best part of the axle quote, when he turned to the register he muttered “and you got to grease the axle to turn the wheel.” I know that part probably doesn’t apply to Flav, but it sure made an impression on this teenager. I payed my tab every week.
Since I never know, maybe Loo can tell me if he’s being serious.
Big Flavor and the Stable Boys. didn’t they play the warfield back in the day?
I think you’re right. Didn’t they open for Punishment Pony?
Yeah, and they jammed with Papa John Creach at Winterland.
Yeah, I saw them open for the Allman Brothers at the Fillmore. Great stuff!
I used to mix them up with Big Brother and the Holding Company.
To second Mac…Flavor regularly threw-up good threads. To me, the thread is important, as it should be interesting enough to engage the Flappers and get the chatter going. After that…to me, what really makes the blog is all you Mo-Fos with you thoughts, knowledge, etc.. And again…I am so thankful that Craig has given us this spot to talk ball and the Giants.
I “met” a lot of you back on the Splash. But here, it is just different, as you can say what you want to say without having it “moderated.” You know…if you want to rip-off a “Fuck Yeah,” you can do it, and know that some college intern isn’t going to nuke your post. (Well, I know when someone got out of hand here, Flav would put his foot down, but that doesn’t happen often.)
You can be what you want to be,
You ain’t got no responsibility,
And every man, every man is free,
You’re a million miles from reality….
Are there any stats out there as far as the success rate of blogs by committee?
XBlog and FIPBlog . . . Voros McCracken, with help from Tom Tango and Clay Dreslough, addressed this years ago. Pay attention as Twin would say. 🙂
only when used in a non-save situation.
Maybe you can talk Flavor into changing his mind. If anyone can do that, it would be you.It seems that everyone would be happier.
Breaking news . . . Clemens not guilty of lying about Steroid use. Umm, yeah, right.
Balco forever. It you ain’t cheat’in you’re not trying.
Barry wants a statue. Not a small plaque!
We will all go through withdrawls!! But like he said he will give us our fix every so often
Un-Fucking-Believable on Clemens. What a fucking farse. Fuck him and the needle sticking outta his ass.
My feelings exactly Chi.
Giants lineup can use some help.
I wonder if the Angels plan to commemorate the 10 years anniversary of the 2002 WS.
If they do, I hope Marichal runs out and hits the Rally Monkey over the head with a bat…
Another DH game. I just hope someone is pissed off somewhere.
Your wish is granted Nipper. I’m pissed about it.
Cheers
Take a nip.
I’m pissed, too. The DH is an abberation to the way the game of baseball was intended to be played!
You walk onto the field and participate in the game…your ass bats during the game, too.
Wanna know how I REALLY feel? FUCK THE DH…IT SUCKS!
At least you guys aren’t fence sitters.
Touche Chi…Fuck the DH!!!
If you can’t field a baseball anymore get out of the game Oldtimers.
The DH can be a help to the Giants just by allowing some guys to get a little rest…
I don’t know about this Threads-by-Committee idea and I don’t know If Belt is for real or if Crazy Horse can keep his average over .280 over the long haul, but I do know that Timmy continually getting bombed puts Flapper Nation in a collective TERRIBLE mood and I strongly suspect this is the fuel behind the recent turn of events on The Flap.
I personally hope Big Favre sets aside this crazy talk of retirement and laces em up for a few hundred more laps behind the wheel of this Magic Bus. (Mixed metaphor—-I know…WORK with me people!)
If that ain’t happening, I think it could still function fine without daily threads. Just simply someone turning the page and resetting the comments every morning would suffice IMHO. The Flap was once a precious newborn in need of much love and nourishment. It is now at the very least a rebellious teenager. Maybe it’s time to set it free and see what happens with no threads or moderation. If it melts down like Jim Furyk yesterday at Olympic, then the plug can be pulled.
To borrow a line from one of my favorite bumper stickers: “If you love something, set it free. If it doesn’t return, hunt it down and kill it.”
Good point, Dawg. When the Splash was in its heyday, they would leave the same thread up for days and suddenly change them out of nowhere. Word got around that a new thread was up, and things would just continue…
I just got home from some errands and was met with about 50 emails in my inbox from The Stable Boys. There are 11 Flappers who have spent the better part of this afternoon organizing group contact lists, making up a 2 week schedule of who posts on what day, staying positive and interjecting humor into this situation and basically just being positive and awesome. Frankly, I’m a little blown away by these guys who stepped up today to fix this problem. And that type of commitment deserves your respect. I’ve committed to taking a day in the schedule too so I will be seen around here regularly (if only once during the schedule). I wasn’t going to do that but as I said I am blown away by the commitment that I’ve seen from these guys today……I think it’s time for a movie clip to rally Flapper Nation back into the right frame of mind about all of this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTLnC-c1E8A
hahhahhahaha
I just watched this, couldn’t watch at work. Too fucking funny, Flav
I agree that Clemens is a dickhead, and that of course he lied- but none these guys should be even be treated as criminals- this only became an issue when it became embarrasing, a PR disaster. With at least another couple hundred names of users hidden, it’s time for Selig to just presume everydody who wasn’t afraid of it used it.Amnesty for all and move on..
IMO.
And who gives a shit about the HOF and who goes in it anymore? Nice of them to wait for Ron Santo to drop dead before they put him in.
the Clemens thing was nothing more than our elected officials wanting to spice up their hearings by hob nobbing with their favorite ballplayers. Idiotic from the start. And my opinion of Clemens is the exact same after the verdict as it was before. He’s a liar and a cheater. Big deal. That’s basically the foundation of baseball from the beginning of the game. Get an edge, try not to get caught. They’ve been doing it since the beginning of the game……..
“Get an edge, try not to get caught. They’ve been doing it since the beginning of the game……..”
Ironically, it can be applied to our elected officials too. Sigh.
As well as Girl Scout Cookie sales
R.I.P. R.C. owens
he didn’t make it to 80 so….that’s sad. I don’t know anything about this dude other than he gets talked about a lot in Niner lore. His stats were pretty pedestrian. Am I just being clueless here? What did he do in football that I’m missing? (serious question).
Here is a good article about his college football/basketball and pro football exploits . . .
http://www.collegeofidaho.edu/ourstories/rcowens
You’re not really missing anything. I mean he had a great vertical leap but you’re right, not too spectacular a career. However, he remained with the Niners in his post playing days and served as sort of a goodwill ambassador. So not a great player but a great 49er
Maybe it’s the bud lights or the nice afternoon at the pool or the hot pieces of MILF ass that are frolicking nearby, but I am in a totally positive move about the next chapter of the flap. I salute my 11 fellow stable boys and proudly declare us to be……..”The Dirrrrrty Dozen” Or, ya know, *The Stable Boys* is fine, too. Either way, whatever works. Either later tonight or tomorrow I’ll introduce The Stable Boys…..I still can’t type *stable boys* without saying it out loud immediately after and rolling with “a knowing dude head nod and an LQTM”…..
“Stable Boys” sort of sounds disgusting. But I like it. Just make sure no one bends down for the bar of soap. Ewwwwww!
Well, this didn’t come as any great surprise. Ralph Barbieri’s suing KNBR for $10 mill
Which means he’ll settle for $75,000…
…and a cheese sandwich
Back to back one-hitters for R.A. Dickey….looks like a lock to start the ASG.
Loo, I picked him up off the Flap League waiver wire almost a month ago . . . Him and picking up Trout (also on the waiver wire) were the best pickups for me thus far this year. Dickey had 13 Ks tonight and a .33 WHIP. Also, double check his scoreless streak – I think that is his 3rd scoreless game (maybe he has allowed one run . . . not certain).
3rd straight I meant.
I think I heard them say one unearned run in 40 something innings, Blade.
J. Sanchez struggling again tonight…
Is there going to be an argument over the Stable Boys line-up? Does the best writer go second or third?
Yeah, I thought ESPN was being ridiculous on rating Sanchez’s start an “8” (out of 10, which is essentially an excellent chance of winning/doing well) in Fantasy League. They obviously are delusional.
Actually, Dirty had what Flavor would call a “serviceable” start- 3 ER in 6 IP. He’s losing velocity much as Tim has in most games, though.
Yeah, I just checked and 3 runs in 6 innings isn’t bad . . . However, the four walks could have made his start a much worse disaster. Only 3 SOs is indicative of what you said about his velocity too.
Actually, I think Cain still has a chance to start the game too.
“Is there going to be an argument over the Stable Boys line-up? Does the best writer go second or third?”
lqtm.
Fish are bitin’…and hittin’…and stealin’…and taggin’…and scorin’.
Trout 1 Giants 0
Nice hitting by craw . . .
Posey to Cain, “OK, let’s go for the 6 hitter . . . “
I give DJLoo’s 3:18 post the POTD: sarcasm, irreverence, and all. I love this place. Who the feck needs Flavor anyway. Haahahahahaha. (Anybody who knows me knows it’s all in good fun. Besides, I couldn’t be referring to Craig because I reserve “Magnus” for that, so feck you and the whores you rode in on.)
like
there we go again!! the freaking offense gets off the dime, gets a lead and BAMMM. hand it right back in the next half inning.
Clemens didn’t annoy me for being a liar and a cheat but for being a punk and a bully and a pussy. if you look closely at his yankee record he sucked for them for the most part in the post season. just as he always has under the bright lights. pitch in toronto? all good there. Dave Stewart showed who he was.
I don’t know who this guy Trumbo is, but has anyone here read “Johnny Got His Gun” by Dalton Trumbo, who was blacklisted in the McCarthy era? Dalton Trumbo was a Hollywood screenwriter. It is a terrific anti-war screed. Maybe he and the ballplayer are related. (You don’t get these nuggets at the Splash.)
I’ve read it and seen the film. It might not be a great first date film unless you’ve entered into a suicide pact.
Maybe he’s the son of 1980 Kentucky Derby runner-up, Rumbo (Ruffinal – Irreproachable by Windy Sands)
Denny like–more please.
A way better movie IMO was Spartacus . . . Douglas fought for his name to be included on the screen credits.
Better than the Trumbo film? I don’t doubt that but it does seem an odd comparison.
I just mean that a better comparison might be with low budget anti-war films.
Like you said, I certainly wouldn’t take a date to see it (much less a child) . . . Too intense. Almost forgot this, he won an Oscar for The Brave One (1956), written under the name Robert Rich. In 1975, the Academy officially recognized Trumbo as the winner and presented him with a statuette. That movie sticks with me because it was about a young kid trying to save his pet bull from the bullfight ring.
I think blade’s point is just that Kirk Douglas, by giving Trumbo on screen credit for SPARTACUS, thus symbolically breaking the blacklist, helped give him the opporunity to make JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN
Not sure I get the comparison. Who cares? Ben Hur vs. Ten Commandments vs. Aliens vs. Dr. Strangelove. Have at it. I LOVED the Trumbo book. Back to the game. (I’m on Twitter trying to arrange on-air stuff in ATL for my book.)
Feck you and the hearst you rode in on. 🙂
Ted, you probably already know this, but Otto Preminger also stuck his neck out for Trumbo by giving him a credit in Exodus. That coupled with Kirk Douglas doing the same in Spartacus, got him reinstated in the Writers Guild of America.
ah, I see. I just learned a few things…but feck you anyway, Blade [insert arch ironic postmodern, post-Flavor, post-orgasmic emoticon]
I give up when you start using words with more than 3 syllables.
I know what Steve was saying, it just struck me as odd, not wrong or anything. Sorry.
both you and exotic dancers are unimpressed with my hifalutin showoffy vernacular; sigh.
Yeah, blade, I knew that. But I kind of like the fact that *you* knew that
KNOWLEDGE WITH BROTHERS IN THE FIGHT OF ASSHOLES MANIPULATING THE CONSTITUTION TO OPPRESS ITS CITIZENS….my brother.
Yeah, actually Douglas and Preminger had pissing contests on who broke the black list. Kind of makes you question their motivations but in this case fuck it—the ends justified the means
Now, that I didn’t know brother Ted . . . However, it makes sense knowing what peacocks Preminger and Douglas were (especially Douglas).
My apologies to you, twin. I misread ya
Cain’s riding the edge here. He gets out of this, he’ll be in go d shape.
if he had done it again i would have thrown something.
Got to love the white shark . . . one of the bigger surprises this year.
Always liked this song
I saw Lesley Ann Warren in an old Columbo [by Sinyar out of Carmen (SWI)] with George Hamilton just the other day. I’ve always liked Lesley.
Great play by Matty.
Yikies . . . Matty’s hanging on by his fingenails
This game just brings out the ol’ TORTURE placards.
Not that really matters, but is there any context for throwing up the Aerosmith video? Are they showing shots of Steven Tyler at The Big A? Did he pull a Charlie Sheen and buy out all the seats in the left field bleachers-hanging out all by himself with his glove waiting for homers?
Just me fecking around……I hope there was no impetus for posting this vid…its a great example of what makes this blog awesome. I was in Vegas with some friends once and 3 or 4 of us had chest colds that made us hoarse. The hoarseness allowed all of us to do a mean imitation of the “Janie’s Got a Gun” line in the chorus. I seem to remember that women were entertained by this, but I simply could have been heavily intoxicated.
I’m down with The Stable Boys (not the confused with The Modified Stableford Scoring System) Yes, at one point in the assembly I was in the back row of the bleachers stretching my legs out and flicking sunflower seeds at my classmates and booing our basketball team, but I do get it that some guys are willing to step up and I look forward to checking it out.
Tap into A-merica!
Speaking of which, I will be in Sin City tomorrow for a few days of gambling.
blade+Vegas= chicks
In the vernacular of Spartacus, we who will have a boring weekend… salute you
Grin. Actually, I would rather win some money in poker and black jack.
In that case, skip the poker. Unless it’s…poke her
(rimshot)
Johnny Got His Gun –> Janie’s Got a Gun
Yeah, a bit of a stretch, bu t one I’m willing to make . . .
Great song Chuck . . . I played it while the Giants were going to the dugout or was it the Angels?
Steve Tyler’s song titles and lyrics are almost alway a reflection/homage/reference/outright ripoff of other film/movie/book/song thingies.
Walk This Way; A Lick and a Promise; Toys in the Attic; Back in the Saddle; and, yes Janie Got A Gun
Actually, it’s quite endearing even if it is ad nauseum
belt almost yanked that outta here… IF he hits .280, fields his position, maybe 10-15 knocks, gets on base….nothing spectacular or AS caliber, this might be his type of season for years to come.
If this guy Trumbo could play infield defense, he would be playing 3rd base. He is lights out as a hitter, but the Angels have a hard time figuring out where to put him.
Flav had a post a while ago about how one associates songs with times in their lives. As in, how School’s Out takes me right back to the last day of 3rd grade. One of the best of many great threads, Flav.
Which one?
Which post or which time chuck went through the 3rd grade?
(rimshot)
Speaking of references, I saw an interview with Alice Cooper. He said he came up wth the title for School’s Out from a Bowery Boys movie. Huntz Hall (Satch) said something naive (whatta surprise) and Leo Gorcey (Slip) says, “Hey! Wake up, Satch. School’s out!!”
God, I am so *filled* with useless information
Matty’s getting right back into trouble.
And out.
Toys in the Attic is one of the best hard rock albums out there, Ted. Everyone rips everyone else off. Steve Miller being one of the biggest riff stealers ever.
True dat
Cain’s on fumes and he’s pitching his ass off.
The Riot!! Nice.
Okay, I admit this is Room B stuff but I couldn’t help my self:
I read about this earlier…too fucking funny. I’d do some “paint by numbers” with her!
Am that you, chi? 2427 Jamm! ?
And I agree. But too many number 4’s. She needs to mix it up a bit
15 dollah!
I’ll be her paint remover . . .
That’s Loo, Low…er…Low Loo
And $15 dollah is money well spent
Angels TV just put up this graphic: Melky’s 85 hits are second in the AL to Derek Jeter…
Flav and Loo, don’t forget to rise and shine early tomorrow to see the best horse on the planet run at Royal Ascot. Frankel [by Galileo (IRE) out of Kind (IRE)] gets the festivities rolling as he goes for his eleventh straight in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes. 6:30 AM PT post.
I’m wearing a Coolmore Farms Galileo hat at this very moment. I think I’ve sweated more in this hat than that horse ever did running 10 furlongs.
OK Dennis. I’ll shake him a few times around 6:20 but he’s very hard to wake…
Saucy

Where would the G’s be without Theriot;s bat? He’s having a fine June. Sabean’s gotta be feeling pretty smug about his off season moves.
Ryan the Riot has been money…especially tonight. Love the way he has played since coming off the DL.
And absolutely NO SHIT re: Sabe’s off-season moves.
Not to mention his dance moves. The man’s a veritable Travolta
God what an ugly child
Bet our team BA has gone up 50 points in the last month. Hey, Magnus, do I likely have a WordPress password by virtue of posting here? G’night, boysandgirls, or LBGTers, or anything in between.
Thanks for trying to cover everyone, Pawlie.
You left out a coupla religions and hairstyles not to mention folks what go to Star Trek Conventions but overall…
G’night Pawlie
Ex Giant and Angels starter tonight Jerome Williams taken to the hospital, reported shortness of breath.Thoughts are with Jerome.

G’Night Flappers…
May all your torsos be painted by a cute Thai chick’s perky naked breasts
Goodnight, gentlemen (question mark)
Great job by the pen. 4 perfect innings. Matt hung tough, especially in the 5th and kept things in check.
Good ballgame tonight. Even better win.
