A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bring On Chapter 4

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 19, 2012

So if my blog experience had been a book, I’d probably say the table of contents looked something like this:

Ch1: The Splash

Ch2: blogger.com

Ch3: wordpress.com

Ch4…..The Stable Boys

And while it could not be argued that I’m a creative title writer, it is an accurate description of my blogging experience that starting a few days into the 2007 baseball season when I stumbled on to the Splash one day by accident. I didn’t even know what a blog was, I was looking for a Bruce Jenkins article and found a long list of blogger comments about the game that day. I got worked up over something I read, created a username and presto, I was blogging my ass off……..

Chapter 4 starts off like this: A bomb has been dropped on Flavor Nation. There are few survivors. Twelve to be exact. But they’re a resilient group and after wandering around The Nation for a while they somehow all make their way to an abandoned stable on the outskirts of town. Inside, there isn’t much. No furniture. No food. No water. But there is electricity and a laptop. One by one they enter, shake hands and discuss what to do next. There names, in no particular order, are: Snarkk, Dennis, WillieD, TedSpe, Twin, Ewisco, Dirt, Bozo, PawlieKokonuts, Chuck, Zumie, and Chi. They decide they need a nickname and one of them blurts out “The Stable Boys.” A few of them snicker quietly to themselves. Ultimately, they decide to be known as “The Dirrrrrrty Dozen”. They all gather around the laptop and stare at each other, silently. Time passes, maybe a few minutes. It seems like hours. Finally, the group gives themselves a collective *knowing dude head nod* and make a plan on who’s going to go first. I’ll stop now and let the rest of this chapter get written by them…….

____________________________________________________

Anyway, there is a schedule that Dirt came up with and it’s been emailed around. Most of the ‘boys either can’t open it or can’t view it. If I was clever I would now say something like “Chapter 4 is starting off a little tough to read.” Bahahahahahaha!!!!! Ahem, sorry. At some point this will all work itself out. A schedule that everyone can view will surface. The group might find out that the schedule is great or maybe it’s a bit too limiting to their creativity. Some of them might discover that they want to post more often or less often. And that’s cool, I’ll fill the gaps and consult with them as we get this up and running. I will also keep managing the widgets to the right and moderate this place……..

And really, there isn’t much left to say. I want everyone to give this a chance and be positive about it. The 12 guys who’ve stepped up to keep this place running have earned my utmost respect. The blog isn’t going anywhere, I’m not really going anywhere either. I’ll still be around I just won’t be the protagonist that I was in the first 3 chapters. Chapter 4 is not the epilogue. It’s simply what comes before chapter 5……..

A new start for the Flap and ironically, a perfect weather day . . . Hmm, coincidence? Does this portend a new “dawn?” Stay tuned Flappers . . .

    Weatherproof games: Royals-Astros, Blue Jays-Brewers, Mariners-Diamondbacks

Tuesday should be a perfect-weather day for baseball, with clear skies and moderate temperatures across the land. There are no significant rain chances in any of the 12 roof-less ballparks hosting games on Tuesday.

I’m not a LU basher, but bochy took a lot of heat over shuffling different guys in/out. Pavs blog in particular seemed to be flooded with guys proposing a myriad of them. No more—this is a set group. The OF is set with Nate as the back up, blanco and melk being able to cover everywhere if needed. Belt has 1b, Theriot 2b, Pablo 3b and craw and arias at SS, with Arias capable of backing up other spots. Posey with a day of Hector at C.
I realize the suckitude of the bench guys like Huff and burriss and the new kid, but really they don’t matter much imo. They aren’t seeing the field or the plate very often and even if you DFA’ed them all they aren’t going to be replaced by anything except replacement level players either. We’ve seen pill gillaspie culbs already and they aren’t able to contribute muc at mlb level. Unlike the starters, who are set for now. And have the team playing winning and exciting baseball.

I think Frankel should take Timmy’s spot in the rotation. But Frankel did his best Matt Cain impersonation today. “The Horse” was perfect today. Simply smashing.

  4. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 19, 2012 at 7:24 am

I agree Willie…absolutely. And when Burriss got the start the other day, I was saying WTF…but you have to remember…Theriot had played a long string of games without a day off. Everyone needs the occasional day, and Burriss, if nothing else, brings speed off the bench, and he is an average fielder (most often is not going to embarrass himself).

Not sure what to do with Huff, but on that occasion that Belt needs a day, Huff or even Posey at first on occasion is all good.

Bottom line, I sure do like the way the line-up is jelling right now. I could see a reallignment in the OF, with Blanco in CF, but that isn’t going to happen. Bascially, all three are capable of holding down CF, but I just feel Blanco in CF and Pagan in RF would be a better alignment.

Tough match-up tonight. Zits against CJ Wilson who has been lights out of late. Hopefully Zito surprises us and pulls a gem outta his ass, and that the Gigante’s bats can solve Wilson and tag a loss on his butt.

I actually started to say this the other day but tried to attach a photo and the whole thing went away so i said fuck it. But i like where we’re at. 4 games over .500, 4 games out of first and they’re not really firing on all cylinders yet. Now that the lineup has shaken itself out the offense should be less of an issue. Despite the perfect game last night, the bullpen still makes me a little nervous. h iccups by the two lefties, romo’s health and a cast of relative unknowns will do that i guess. casilla seems to have nailed down the closer spot. zito and timmy still big question marks but vogelsong doesn’t seem to have lost a step from last year so there’s still three very good starters. Three weeks to the all-star game.

  7. willieD's avatar willieD said, on June 19, 2012 at 7:42 am

Don’t look now, but Belt has pushed OPS up to over .800, past blanco and pagan, behind only melk pablo and posey. Only melk at .401 has better OB than his .378. He’s shown he can not only hit LHP but take them out of the yard at ATT…just hope I haven’t hexed the guy.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 19, 2012 at 7:45 am

I doubt that you have “hexed” him willieD. Per Yahoo, “Huff could very well get the Wally Pipp treatment when he’s ready to come off the DL later this month.”

      • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on June 19, 2012 at 8:21 am

A poor analogy by Yahoo. Huff was hardly playing regularly when he got hurt and I don’t think Belt is reminding anyone of Lou Gehrig just yet…

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 19, 2012 at 8:28 am

Lou – LMAO…Don’t think anyone is saying he is Lou Gherig, but over his last 28 days (16 starts), he is hitting .293 with a .400 OBP, and a .934 OPS. That’s the best production the Giants have had out of the first sacker all damned year. If he can continue in some semblance of this…I’ll fucking take it.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 19, 2012 at 8:34 am

Disagree Loo . . . When Aubrey Huff landed on the DL with a knee issue, Belt was quick to answer the knock of opportunity, hitting a home run in each of the first three games sans Huff. During that week, Belt hit .400 with three home runs, seven RBIs and four Runs and he had a 3:4 K-to-BB ratio in that span.

Per Yahoo, he was the No. 17 player in the Yahoo FL and since then, has “fallen” to 36. Belt reached base in all four plate appearances Monday, going 2-for-2 with two walks. Belt also scored a run and also stole his third base of the season. Yeah, I agree he hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype so far, but Belt’s .379 OBP is strong and I wouldn’t be surprised if he eventually does live up to his Baseball America ranking (as the Giants’ No. 1 prospect after producing a 1.075 OPS across three minor-league levels (Hi-A, Double- and Triple-A)). In short, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

The baseball term “Wally Pipped” when used correctly, refers to a regular everyday player losing his job to a fill-in who exceeds expectations. I don’t think it was used correctly here, although I don’t see any reason to make a federal case out of it….

You’re absolutely correct, I wasn’t disagreeing to that though (as you pointed out, Huff was on his way out regardless) . . . I guess you would be right about Belt reminding anyone of Gehrig too. As Maxwell Smart would say, “Would you believe J.T. Snow? How about Sneezy from the Seven Dwarfs? Happy? Dopey?

Craig – that was wild how you “stumbled” upon the Splash. I had a similar experience in that I was looking for a particular article and also found the Splash. I remember many of the vets who are now part of the Flap and also that initial invite to “come to the dark side” (the original Flap). Was chuckling the other day thinking about that site and the Titties of the Day (or something to that effect). Interesting how this thing has morphed and grown over time.

Is it me or has Bagg’s lost something off his fastball with the move to comcast? Rather than the long, comprehensive posts of the merc, he seems to be filing more frequent, little items with nothing really insightful or breaking news-ish. Also there aren’t much in the way of comments. Alex and steward seem to have picked right up where Baggs left off.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 19, 2012 at 8:57 am

Agree with you on Baggs. At the Merc he kept it crisp and I used to read his blog regularly but now I hardly even bother. His posts are lacking in humor, content and frequency.

Hmmm…I was just reading his piece Loux, etc. It has quite a few threads in it…one being that it appears that Jerome Williams is stable and will be back at the yard tonight (he was sent to the hospital last night when he had trouble breathing after coming out of the game).

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 19, 2012 at 9:04 am

I will agree that I don’t read his stuff nearly as regularly as I did when he was with the Merc. But you have to realize that with Comcast the expectations and job description are different. At the Merc, he had one piece to write. At Comcast, he writes a number of articles on any given day, and also does on field analysis and studio video pieces. He is certainly more fragmented.

And I agree that Alex and Carl are doing an excellent job picking-up where Baggs left off.

I remember in the first month saying we weren’t going to see a Set LU anytime soon. A lot of folks were complaining and saying Bochy preferred to shuffle guys around.Which was poppycock, of course. As guys played their way into and out of the LU, we got closer and closer to the set LU every manager prefers. Burriss (who deserved first crack at 2B), Nate, Huff all had chances to get everyday time-and failed. Meanwhile Blanco, Belt, and Theriot “made their stands”
To follow up on Willie’s comments on Belt, and I’m not discussing whether he should have started all along, whether it’s “about time”, none of that- he’s doing it now- we can just hope it’s for real. His OPB, OPS,wRC+ are all in the upper tier of NL first basemen. Then there’s “Mario”Crawford- who has lifted himself 32 points above Mendoza’s line and improved his defense. We have a good LU- when Pablo gets it going again and my Haitian Mojo Restorer finishes with Tim, we should be cruising past Donnie’s boys.

It will be real interesting . We have 5 pitchers who have the numbers and 3 position players. We know we won’t get 8. Here’s my revised breakdown.
      Melky- in
      Pagan- a victim of numbers-out
      Posey-in
      Cain-in
Bumgarner, Casilla- I think only one gets in, that’s a real tough call. It’s coin flip for me
Vogelsong- there was a lot of flak that he got in last year. Out.
Romo- deserving but he gets hurt because we have so many other qualified players. Out.

  14. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 19, 2012 at 10:01 am

On the pen- the mop up guys, in particular: uinlike Casilla, Romo, the loogies… Loux and Kontos aren’t here to stop the other team in it’s tracks- it’s to keep things under control. Even with his occasional blow ups, that’s what Mota was so good at. I’ve always thought it was a job for guys who been shaving for a few years. Loux in particular isn’t a journeyman for nothing but that journeyman status can be an asset- he’s been around enough and knows the deal- he’s not going to freak if he’s greeted with a laser up the midddle. The kids we had seemed hellbent on turning 3
run deficits into 7. Loux’s inning was huge last night. It was too early for the top guys, that one inning got them there.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 19, 2012 at 10:06 am

Agree, Twin. Both Baggs and Alex P. wrote pieces focusing on Loux, and there are a few quotes from Loux…he gets it…knows his role, and did a kick-ass job last night to set the table, for as you say, the “top guys.” Was good to see Romo come back from a tough outing…not surprising, but good. And Casilla did just enough to keep things interesting, to put it mildly…

  15. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 19, 2012 at 10:45 am

Last night’s game was a fine win, but. It reminded me of why I do not like the AL game, and why I hope it doesn’t take over the NL game. The 4th inning was 45 minutes or 50 minutes long, I think. I was at my health club on the elliptical, and I blew off an extra 100 calories watching the bottom half. Cain was tired, but it was interminable. Time of game 3:21, not horrific, but just seemed ultra long. Seems to me the AL game, with the DH, is always tons of pitch taking early in counts regardless of quality of pitch, lots of waiting around. With the DH, there’s lots of strategy missing, less focus on small ball and creating runs. Just seems damn boring to me, even if they score more than NL games…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 19, 2012 at 11:01 am

For what it’s worth, I did a quick look at last night’s interleague tilts. 4 games in AL parks, 5 in NL parks. Average time of game (total minutes):
      in AL parks, 180;
      in NL parks, 158 …

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 19, 2012 at 11:08 am

Snarkk, related to that, in fantasy league, you have to pay way more attention to AL pitching matchups, i.e., there are few “weak sisters” out there. I hate any of my AL pitchers going against the Yankees, Boston, and Texas. Too masochistic for me, unless I have a stud like King Felix (who frankly, has been un-stud like lately) or Verlander.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 19, 2012 at 11:13 am

I don’t get to caught up in the DH debate but I don’t watch AL games either. The game naturally lends itself to the pitcher hitting. It keep the pace of the game going and creates the need for strategy in the later innings.

Funny how Selig, in his quest to speed up games, never talks about doing away with the DH.

Pill is gone, Huff’s on the DL or wherever, so there’s less pressure to hit or sit. His D is always there, now he’s starting to hit the ball harder, and he’s getting on base with that good eye. I’ve got hope for the kid. I think he can be JT Snow with 15-20 HRs when he hits his stride around 26. That would not be bad at all…

I’ll heartily agree with Snarkk about the slowness of AL games. Jeter ABs are glacially slow with how long he steps out between pitches. Seems like more of that slowness in the AL.
The NL has won 3 out of 4 of the last World Series, and plays a crisper, better brand of baseball, albeit lower scoring. AL beer-league softball 13-6 games are less entertaining than NL 4-3 games, IMO.

I agree on the NL/AL stuff, and I believe it was Dirt’s comment about the DH taking away from the strategy of the game (whether to pinch-hit for your pitcher, etc.). AL is a fucking abomination of how the game was meant to be played.

unlike the dimensions in baseball (90 ft, 60′ 6″ etc.) the dimensions in basketball have not held up to the growth of the players. the court needs to be wider, the basket higher, the key bigger and the three point line, which is a great zone buster (but only if you permit the zone!) needs to be pushed out. I’ll be holding my breath while changes are made.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 19, 2012 at 3:23 pm

Well, then don’t take it seriously- which means no ASG vote could ever have been taken seriously. Picking Belt out was an intentional provocation, though. He is the fourth or fifth best first baseman so far, so until things change, he *deserves* the 4th or 5th most votes.

It’s just a popularity contest. I’m surprised that Belt is 4th just because I can’t believe so many non-SF fans even know who he is. I’m also rather surprised that Melky is garnering so many votes. I didn’t think the common fan paid attention to anything out west…….

The Giants accumulated a ton of new fans after they won the world series. And there’s no better evidence of that then Crawford being 5th in voting at SS. I don’t think it’s a Bay Area thing, voting for all star games is pretty low on the list of Nor Cal fans. That’s more something you get going with people in the midwest who have nothing else to do. Crawford’s good looking, maybe he’s scoring votes from all the ladies……..

Who decides who the *deserving* players are? There’s no real world point that Loo was making. Having some committee decide who deserves to even get a single vote is ridiculous. As far as Belt, since it can very convincingly be argued that he’s the 4th or 5th best right now, his place in the voting is just where it should be.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 19, 2012 at 6:21 pm

      4th or 5th? I could argue that, but won’t.
Loo was saying that with someone like Votto, and such a below average crop of 1st basemen in the NL, then NOBODY should get a vote except Votto. At least that’s how I read it, I only read it once, and I’m not going back to see if I read it right.
He wasn’t targeting Belt, if anything he was casting a wide net and calling out an entire group of first basemen. I see his point…….

I don’t give a rat’s patoot who starts the AS game. The fan voting is mostly a popularity contest, and the managers bring into the extra spots their own team’s players, just like Bochy did last year. Most players hit only once anyway and then they’re done. It’s nice seeing the various good players on two teams, but hardly worth trippin’ about. The worst thing about it is that the winner’s league takes home field in the WS. Asinine, and hopefully gets changed when Selig the dunce leaves town…

There is not an interface to pick 2nd, 3rd. 5th, whatever… as you acknowledge. Until there is, this system is as good as it gets, and in Belt’s case- his position in the balloting is fair But again- it’s not your call on who deserves votes for 1, 2, or 16. And there is no way to ever implement a system where only the *deserving* are on the ballot.

My second cousin on my Mother’s side made me lob once. Once.

Back in the 70s, it was great fun filling out an All-Star ballot at a ballgame. We’d always do a legit one, but then we’d do a couple of “joke” ones, trying to identify the worst player at each position and punching his name. Or, being NL fans, if we were really in a sinister mood, we’d do a legit one for the NL and a joke one for the AL. Not that our help was needed, the NL owned the AL back then.
