A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Hangover III

Posted in Uncategorized by unca_chuck on June 21, 2012

Well, since the emotional high of Matt Cain’s perfecto, the Giants are mired in a field of quicksand as they slog their way through this 2-4 roadie. 2-5 since Matty’s perfect game. Losing 2 of 3 to the Los Anaheim Angels of Angeles California is one thing, but losing 2 of 3 to the lowly Mariners is pretty (wait for it) pathetic. The White Shark is cooling off in a big way, Pablo is still looking for his power stroke (4-37, 1 double), and the pen, which was unhittable in Matty’s last win, has suddenly gotten wobbly. Melky and Buster have been holding their own, but the rest? ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz. These guys are playing like it’s the dawg days of August, not the first day of summer.

To add to the malaise, the Giants get to play their next 3 at Crumbledome. 2 teams enter, 50 men fall asleep. On top of  that, we get the anti-stopper in Tim Lincecum. By my count he’s stopped 5 winning streaks. The hope for me was that, while Timmy was trying to find his Tim-ness, Zito would cover for him until their magnetic field reversed themselves into the correct positions. Well, not quite. They are both caught in some sort of black hole of mediocrity. Zito is hurtling back to earth faster than a subatomic particle, and Timmy is buried under 30 feet of dirt and expectations.

But hey, the boys are coming home tonight. 3/5ths of the rotation is looking unhittable, Santiago Casilla is rolling along, and Melky’s hammy looks to be OK. Plus, the A’s are doing their part by beating the LA Dogs of LA. The Giants get to rest up before taking on the team that Wolff Schlitzer waylaid. Still and all, this road trip so far just like a short-hop throw to the oblongs . . .

Wake up G-men. It’s time to start winning again.

    Good job Chuck.
Gmen will do well to take 1 of 3 this weekend, most likely the Sat game. Parker has been lights out, so Friday the chances look dim. The A’s will take and take and take against Timmeh, and run his pitch count through the roof. I’m sorry to say that one does not look good. There’s an In N’ Out on the other side of the Nimitz near the Coliseum — I suggest Timmeh get there early Friday afternoon for a double double pick me up to change his Mojo…

Tonight looks great, Snarkk, it’s tomorrow that you’re conceding to the A’s.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 21, 2012 at 9:18 am

And I don’t follow why you would conncede Cain’s game on Sunday. McCarthy is good, but I’d say Matt is kinda decent. Parker? As I noted before we beat him last time, his peripherals aren’t that good. 2 of 3 minimum for the Giants.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2012 at 10:43 am

I fixed the tonite/Friday confusion. Cain should do fine, the Giants just aren’t hitting and scoring against good hurlers, and McCarthy is tough. Parker’s been on a damn roll. That’s all. Plus, McCarthy’s wife is super hot. I give Bum the edge in the Sat game over the kid the A’s are bringing in for Colon, so that’s why I picked Sat as the likely Giants lone win. I’m Timmeh’s biggest fan, but until he proves he’s outta the funk, I gotta pick against the Gyros when he starts, especially vs. the A’s that don’t even think of swinging until at least two pitches into the AB …

Pablo is 11 for 40 last two weeks, Chuck. Don’t know where 4-37 came from.
“Melky and Buster have been holding their own, but the rest?” Theriot is .364 the last week. Belt has hit well, except for the game against Wilson. Crawford is .357 the last week. Arias is .375.
Pagan ( .186 last two weeks.160 last week), Blanco ( .160 last two weeks, .120 last week) are the slumpers, and Pablo to a lesser degree.

It’s really two guys now- Timmy and Zito. The offense was hardly scintillating on the trip but two of the four losses were on those two, who gave up 13 runs in 8.1 innings. Forget about sweating the offense right now. If we can’t get at respectable results out what is now the 4/5 spots, we’re doomed anyway.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2012 at 8:58 am

Front office knows they’re doomed if the 4/5 continues like this. Thing is, if they brought in Wandy or similar, which one of the $20million boys gets the “injury”? I pick Zito…

    Nice thread, Chuck.

I agree with Twin re: the offense, but while the stats are there for many of our guys…they do need to score some runs.

In June, 10 home games, averaging 3.5 per game (and that includes the 10 spot on Houston, but two shut-out losses to the Rangers).

9 road games averaging 4.2 per.

So, I think it more the pitching (some shaky bullpen work here and there), and Zits and Timmy.

While the G-Men have struggled at the Nausolem (stole that from Chuck), with Madison and Cain on the bump for two of the games, I think they can take two and the series. Time will tell.

To follow-up on the comment on Wandy last night, Morosi of FOX Sports wrote that the Yank-mees, Giants and Jays had scouts in attendance for his start against the Royals last night. Nate would have to part of the package…and maybe one of our young catchers (since we have like 157 of them in the minors).

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2012 at 10:34 am

No way Joseph is in a “package”, he’s got some pop. Wandy is OK, but he’s not more than a solid “good” by any stretch. He does well against the Gyros, but who doesn’t? He’s a career .500 pitcher, a #4 guy at best, and he’s 33 on the downside. For what it’s worth, he’s a Tier 9 starter in the latest Fangraphs ratings…

  11. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 21, 2012 at 9:33 am

They got shut down by a CY winner and a second place CY pitcher. Felix and Weaver have been to known to do that- to anybody. If any one of our other starters pitch the bad boys losses on the trip- it’s a 4-2 trip. I’m not ready to freak about the offense at all. We’re now past any argument about whether Tim or Barry has been the suckiest – and those two pitching spots are priority one. IMO.

    • Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on June 21, 2012 at 9:40 am

Barry will always remain the “suckiest.”

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 21, 2012 at 10:42 am

I agree, Twin. And we’re still only in June. Just sucked to lose back-to-back series for the first time this season. And the inability to get that key hit with RISP still bugs me some.

  12. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 21, 2012 at 10:01 am

The problems with the offense are easy to identify. Blanco is ice cold and Pablo is swinging out of his shoes at everything. Both problems can be fixed rather easily, IMO. The both just need to do what they were doing earlier in the year.
and Chuck, that pic is fucking classic…..

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2012 at 10:46 am

Blanco, to my knowledge, has never played/started so much like this, so I think he’s tiring. He’s not a big guy. Bochy has to rest him more regularly, IMO. Hard to do, because he’s the sparkplug. But, if the sparkplug is fouled, you gotta clean it…

And a 38 year old stiff. If wishes were horses . . . If the G’s hit better with RISP in recent games, they’d have won . . .

Point is, they’ll always face good pitching. I’m not calling this the end of the road. I’m just saying they’ve been flat since the perfect game.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 21, 2012 at 10:39 am

Chuck, if you’re going to post as you did, you have to expect some disagreement- mine is valid. You can say hitting with RISP is the problem- but the games Tim and Barry lost were wins by the other starters. That is the priority for fixing, IMO. Just because hitting with RISP is a problem, it doesn’t mean it’s the main or only problem- yeah, they could have won a couple more games if they’d hit better in those games- they also would have won two more except for the horrendo starts from the Bad Boyz. If the new blog is just agree with the author, it’s not a blog.
“Point is, they’ll always face good pitching.” And like every other baseball team the world has ever known, they’ll often get beat by good pitching.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 21, 2012 at 10:25 am

Well, we’re gettting to DEFCON 1 with Timmy. If he can’t beat the stinkin’ A’s then what?

I thought they’d consider skipping this turn as it wouldn’t affect anyone else in the rotation due to this off day today.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 21, 2012 at 10:31 am

Hey, the A’s have been playing good ball. They’re 7-3 in their last 10, and just took two from the Bums (who until last night’s loss had the best record in the majors). That plus the fact that they always play us tough in their house. So, to say “If he can’t beat the stinkin’ A’s then what” is kind of a misnomer (especially since we failed to take the series against the fucking Mariners who are one of the worst clubs in baseball).

I do agree with the “if the G’s hit better with RISP” take, tho.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 21, 2012 at 10:50 am

The MadBum and Cain match ups are in the Giants favor, IMO. McCarthy is their ace, but he hardly has Matt’s pedigree.
As far as Tim, he had their number so completely that one time he was sick and Luis the Cab Driver shut them out. This is as good a chance as he’s had to have a good outing.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2012 at 11:03 am

I think they’ve been at DEFCON 1 with Timmy for a month, but continue to wait on confirmation despite the opposition’s missiles that continue to leave the yard.

As for Zito, they’ve been at the special DEFCON ZITO position for at least 4 years, but Baer’s afraid to pull the DFA trigger, ‘cuz this is what he’ll look like: http://tinyurl.com/6fy5gd

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 21, 2012 at 11:14 am

They’ll do something about Timmy if he has another bad outing against the A’s. Can’t say I know what, most likely to the pen for a start or two. There’s really nothing to do about Zito but pray, and that’s really all there is, that’s no Hate Zits deal, everything has been tried, nothing has worked.

I don’t think anybody out there hates Zito. They shouldn’t. He’s a pretty decent dude, really. We just hate how he pitches and what it does to the squad. For me, the absurdity of continuing on and on with him is what really frosts me. Admission of failure and moving on from it is a sign of organizational strength, IMO. The opposite, a sign of weakness. At least with Timmeh, the fall is recent, and at his age, there is some hope…

It’s never easy for the Giants scoring runs in that place: 5 runs in 3 games last year, 1 run in 3 games in 2010, and they haven’t won there at all since 2009.

Jeez, couldn’t the Angels have waited a couple more days and started Weaver against the Dodgers, their supposed crosstown rivals?

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 21, 2012 at 12:00 pm

This is not the same team. It seems everyone is handing this series to the A’s and they have played well lately, pulling to just 3 games under .500. Sure, they could take the series, any team can win a series against any other- but bottom line- we are better than they are, and it’s not arguable.
Now I’m going to take a nap, it was a short night for me. Maybe we should all go fishing this weekend, our team is doomed.

Snarkk– I’d be really curious to know how you thought Sandusky’s lawyer did defending him. I know your feelings about the case but I just wanted to know from an objective viewpoint if you think he did “the best job he could have done” (as asserted in a Yahoo headline right now) or if he blew it in certain areas.
by the way, here’s the yahoo article
    http://tinyurl.com/7x9nl2x

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Good article you linked. Wetzel is one of the best internet sports writers, IMO. Anyway, I’ve paid scant attention to this trial. The whole PSU molestation disaster disgusted me from the start, and because I get so agitated when I read more about it, I’ve purposefully stayed away from actively following the trial. If I could, I’d give that football program the death penalty for a decade. From what I’ve heard, and that article, Amendola is a real loose cannon, but he probably did as well as he could with the resources at hand. If Sandusky were a zillionaire, the defense would have been better. More and deeper attacks on the victims’ personal lives, etc., and on McQueary as the star witness, most likely. I do wish Paterno had been alive to be publicly drawn and quartered on the stand, and I’m not ashamed to say that. Note that there are nearly 50 separate counts, all based on alleged incidents happening years ago. The jury must vote on each one of them. If the jury does it right, they have to find that all the elements of the crime alleged in each count were met beyond a reasonable doubt. I would think that there are bound to be some counts they can’t support for various reasons – vague testimony, time frame conflicts, etc, not to mention there is no physical evidence (that I know of) after all this passage of time. Sandusky did not testify. So, it’s all victim testimony of remembered bad conduct vs. a defense consisting of “the victims are money grubbing slime” and “Jerry is a great guy, I can’t imagine him doing that” character testimony. Defense reliance on character witnesses is usually weak unless there is a lone victim or only a few and his or their testimony’s credibility can be plausibly impeached via motive or discrepancies. Where lots of victims testify to the same pattern of bad defendant behavior, character defense is definitely weak since it’s hard to get past the basic fact that character witnesses were never in all those different places with the victims and the defendant where the alleged crimes occurred. And, the defense’s argument that the victims are all out for money, thus tainting their testimony essentially as a group, is an expected defense, but whose plausibility “should” easily be overcome by logic and facts – I assume the prosecution elicited innoculative testimony from each victim that they did not know each other beforehand, or did not conspire, since they all were under the radar for years after the molestations, like most such victims. Hard to have a conspiracy to railroad Sandusky when none of the “conspirators” know or contact each other. Maybe some did, I dunno. Bothersome to me is that there are lots of Penn Staters in one form or another in that jury box. I supposed that’s hard to avoid, since the trial is being held about 5 miles from State College, and obviously the defense had no incentive to request a change of venue. But, unless there is one juror that is such a Penn State zealot that he/she votes to acquit on ALL charges as some sort of personal PSU statement to save PSU’s honor, given the overwhelming and consistent pattern testimony of multiple victims, I don’t see how Sandusky escapes getting tagged on at least enough charges to put him away effectively for life. Of course, the OJ murder trial result tells us anything can happen. If good ‘ol Jerry somehow gets off on all charges, Pennsylvania should just close its borders, it will become a national disgrace…

Yesterday, near Freedom of Espresso, a coffee shop where I often work, I saw a car with FRONT and BACK license plate holders saying SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS FAN. That’s rare in these here parts. (I don’t even have such a license plate holder. Well, I did not have a car from November 2009 until this past Monday. Got a 2007 VW Rabbit.) I placed a business card on the windshield for my book and another card for my so-called business life.) Today, I was pleased to get this email that made my day; you’ll all love it:

Hey Paul, Thanks for leaving your cards on my windshield yesterday! I saw the article on you and your book in the paper a few weeks ago! I’m looking forward to reading it. More importantly I’ve been a diehard Giants fan my whole life, hoping when I was a kid that they’d be on the NBC Game of the Week because thats the only way I could watch them. I remember suffering through those teams with Johnnie LeMaster at short, all those terrible Giants’ Strat-O-Matic teams that I spent my summers and college years playing, and those dreaded Dodgers having such success at our expense. Then November 1, 2010 it happened (my birthday by the way – the best gift ever) the burden was lifted and the impossible happened, certainly nothing I thought would occur in my lifetime. So many people congratulated me it felt as though I was a member of the team, and I suppose in many ways I was! Now with the MLB package I can be “tortured” with as many Giants games as I can stand. Thanks again for the note and I sure hope Timmy gets things straightened out!! Humm Baby, [name withheld here]

Speaking of Giants fans all over, is there any definitive study out there that rates the number of global fans for each MLB team, or pro sports teams in general? My guess for MLB total global fans would be:

    1. Yanks
    2. RSox
    3. Cubs
    4. Giants
    5. Dodgers

Here’s one source that looks plausible to me, and rates the Cards higher than LA.
    http://tinyurl.com/6t4dw28

Across all sports, soccer squads must be the most globally popular. Probably ManU of English Premier League fame would be the #1 global team, maybe Real Madrid or Barcelona next, etc. And, China probably has some internal sports clubs of some sort that are followed by a coupla hundred million people….

So the Cain game is on again tonight. I’m predicting he does it again…Blanco has shown me enough that I think he’ll rebound- he might have a little Vungo-itis going on- he seems to swinging for the fences a lot. But if he doesn’t do a darn thing again, preserving Matt’s perfect game with that catch will be a memory for a lifetime for him-and Matt- and all of us.
He’s sort of the anti-Kyle Williams.

Would you rather have his 8 frames today against the Dodgers, or Zito’s first 3 against the Angels the other night? All I’m saying is the Giants gave the guy a sip of coffee (4 appearances, 5 innings) after being in their farm system for a while, then quickly gave him the railroad ticket outta the organization to clear a 40 man roster spot. Then Billy Beane picks his ass up for nothing, and all of a sudden he’s a world beater against the team with the best record in the majors. He’s been now in 7 games for the A’s, with 4 starts. WHIP with the A’s isn’t bad at 1.25, and SO/BB ratio is 2.13, and 3.76 ERA. I’d take that over the Zito abominations the past 3 starts in a New York second. If he is even serviceable with 5 or 6 innings in his next few starts, there will be egg on Giants management faces as they contemplate giving up position prospects for a starter…

The A’s are a Jeckyll/Hyde team. They were cruising along a little over .500 when they lost what, 9 straight? Now they are clawing out of that hole. I think it would be hilarious if they somehow won the west. the fricking Rangers and Angels (the Rangels?) spend gobs of money to upgrade their teams. If the A’s somehow beat them both while shedding anything resembling talent would be hysterical to me.

To paraphrase St. Augustine, Go A’s! Just not right now.

Rockies are going with a 4 man rotation, and a maximum 75 pitch count. Jeremy Guthrie, supposedly the numero uno starter when they broke spring training, has been such an abject failure and was moved to long relief earlier this week.

A 4 man rotation is something that hasn’t been done on a consistent basis since the early 1970s. Several teams have experimented with a four-man rotation over the last two decades because of off days and injuries.

Rockies starting pitching has been so putrid, that Tracy really had no choice (since the cupboard is bare in their minor league system). Josh Outman became the first guinea pig, pulled at 72 pitches in the fifth inning Tuesday. His night didn’t feel much different because he’s still transitioning from a relief role. “The 75-pitch count is irrelevant to me right now because I haven’t gotten past that,” Josh Outman said. “I know I need to be more efficient.” Umm, he wasn’t being intentionally funny . . . That’s how bad this rotation is.

Ironically, Jeff Francis just pitched his 75 or so pitches and was still taken out, despite only giving up one run this evening against the Phils. But Tracy insisted that even if a starter is working a shutout, he will be removed at roughly 75 pitches. “He has got to come out, because he has to pitch four days later,” Tracy said.

It will be interesting to see if this starts a trend, as the Dodgers did when they went to a 5 man rotation in the early 1970s.

Can we pitch Cain the first 3 innings of every game?…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 21, 2012 at 7:17 pm

well, the main problem with that idea, and there are many, is that the 4 guys they are using suck balls. 75 pitches should be there goal each game, not the time to take them out, lol

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 21, 2012 at 7:31 pm

The other (bigger) reason besides having no cavalry that is going to rescue them is that the bullpen is worn out. They have pitched approximately 240 innings . . . I wont even check, but I bet the Giants bullpen has 100-125 less innings pitched.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 21, 2012 at 7:35 pm

exactly, and there are a few other ones, too. Would I try this with our team? Possibly. But that’s because we have 3 stud starters and a rock solid BP. And if either TImmy ever steps up this year or ZIto recaptures his slider then we’d have 4 guys and then you could give this gimmicky thing a go-go.

Now, I just read in SFGate where today, after the jury got the case, prosecutors announced that one of Sandusky’s (now adult) adopted sons offered to testify during the trial that HE was molested by Sandusky as a kid. I posted quite a while back, I think on SFGate stories about this guy, that I would not at all be surprised if Sandusky had abused his own adopted kids. Now, unfortunately, it is revealed to be so. Child predators have no remorse and no principles when it comes to abusing their victims. That is why I believe they must be dealt with harshly…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 21, 2012 at 7:12 pm

why in the fuck didn’t they put that son on the stand?

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2012 at 7:38 pm

I can only speculate. Since the son apparently offered to do that out of the blue halfway through the trial, it would have messed up the prosecution’s witness plan, and certainly delayed the momentum of the prosecution’s case in mid-trial, since it would file new charges based on those allegations, and the defense would have been given time to prepare for a new witness that was not on the witness list. Maybe there were statute of limitations issues, too; I dunno. Also, the son did not testify during the indictment phase, so the prosecution may have been leery of where the defense cross examination might take him — motives? — that might confuse the jury and taint the other victims’ testimony. From a practical standpoint, the prosecution would have also considered that if for some reason the jury acquits Sandusky on everything, if the prosecution kept the son’s “powder dry” in reserve, then they could always file new charges later based on the son’s allegations, and try Sandusky again on those without being barred by double jeopardy problems…

Bozo, and others no doubt, think I was wrong and/or overreacting to Chuck and chastising others about proper blog authorship. There’s some merit in that, and I confess to being pissed off that after Pawlie’s thread was accidentally deleted by Ted , I attempted to find the post to restore it, put up a post to let everyone know what happened, offered to help Chuck because he was having trouble getting his thread up, got up early to see if Chuck had been able to post, offered to put something up until he got it straightened out- and never received even acknowledgement for my efforts. Poor me? In this case-well, yeah. Exactly zero others did anything but go to bed after the entire thread went black. I should not have lectured others on blog author etiquette, that was wrong. But all of the writers got E-mails last night as I was trying to help Ted and get people informed about had happened. It would have been nice to hear from anyone (Ted was extremely appreciative) thankful for the small things I did to help the new blog. Bozo is a terrific guy and I hope he changes his mind. And please do not make the mistake of saying I’m taking myself too seriously – I’m as aware or more so than anyone on what’s serious and what isn’t-this is a diversion , but everyone likes to be appreciated for what they do to help others even in such a small way. I’m not exactly overboard in love with the Stable Boy designation, BTW. No biggie, just not in love with it, OK?
