A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Second Choice

Posted in Uncategorized by Del Mar Dennis on July 25, 2012

No. I’m not referring to the Bob Baffert 3yo filly that’s sitting on the tote board at 5/2 at Del Mar. If I were, only Flav and Loo would continue to read on. No. I’m talking about your second choice in favorite teams behind our beloved Giants. Do you even have a second favorite? Maybe there’s one you still follow that you rooted for from your childhood before you were transplanted to the Bay Area. Maybe you enjoy following the new team in your current area after being transplanted away. Maybe you have a relative that plays minor league ball for a certain organization that you like to keep tabs on.

I’ve always had a second favorite team. And although I know it won’t be a popular choice, my second favorite club has always been the New York Yankees. Yes, the dreaded “Evil Empire” themselves. I can hear the booing now. How did the Yanks become my second choice? Allow me to tell you…

When I was about ten or eleven-years-old, Moms and I sat down one afternoon and watched “The Pride of the Yankees.” You know the movie. It starred Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, and the great Walter Brennan. And who could forget The Babe playing himself. Lou Gehrig? Who the heck was Lou Gehrig? In the next two hours, I would learn his story. I was fascinated by his life as a baseball player, but I was even more deeply moved by his life as a man.

And so I started doing book reports on Lou Gehrig. I wanted to find out more about his baseball career and the disease that took his life at such a young age. That film had a profound effect on me. Funny how some pictures do that. So I wanted to know more. His story has been well documented, and this is not another Lou Gehrig book report, but I wanted to pass along one stat that still boggles the mind. In a three year stretch from 1930-32 Gehrig averaged 170 RBI a season. That’s unbelievable.

And so it began. At a point in life when each time I opened a Topps baseball card pack in hopes of finding a Darrell Evans, Jack Clark or a “Count” Montefusco, with Gehrig and the Yankees fresh in mind, I also started looking for a Graig Nettles, Roy White or if lucky, a Reggie. And they’ve been my second choice ever since.

So you guys know my dream scenario for the World Series. I know some of you are still waiting and wanting, perhaps even needing to avenge that loss back in ’62. Maybe this time our first baseman hits a liner in the bottom of the ninth in Game 7 that just goes over Cano’s head for the clincher. Who will be our first baseman in October? Your guess is as good as mine.

Didn’t see Timmy’s reaction after the flare dropped. I saw the screaming into the mitt, but not the bat-smashing tantrum in the dugout.

Robbie, Bochy usually rests Buster on a day game after a night game. Because of his horrific injury last year. What usually happens is Hector catches and Buster goes to 1st. With Hector hurt, and now Panda, Bochy had very few options.

Frankly, I’d rather see Bochy resting him now rather than overworking him for the stretch drive. No matter how good Buster looks, he needs time off.

“Bochy usually rests Buster on a day game after a night game. Because of his horrific injury last year.”
Actually, that was pretty much SOP always, before the injury as well.

It’s hard to conceive of sitting Buster with Panda out but why sit Nate when he’s been hitting? Besides, Buster’s walking around the dugout with a bat, which says, put me in coach, no? I mean why not give him the shot to tie it up, I doubt that takes anything out of him. It’s not just this game it’s Bochy’s lack of a real competitive thought. I’ve never been his fan and never will be. Just don’t see why he is here and wish he weren’t. I do think the Giants can win with him, but I don’t see him competing for any manager award unless it’s for the dullest human being alive. Just venting.

All catchers get at least a day off every week (usually on Sunday or the day before a travel day . . . check out the MLB rosters for this Sunday and you will see how many of the regulars are out). Very few go 7 days straight, much less 6 days straight. I don’t want to pile on Robbie, but I agree with Twin and Chuck with regard to Bochy too, i.e., he is an outstanding manager and does a great job with strategy, bullpen, reserves, etc. Yes, he is not book smart, but neither was Sparky Anderson. In fact, most managers are not college grads. In any event, we can agree to disagree. 🙂

Robbie, you’ve made your point about how you feel about Bochy. We have a rule in the blog about being excessively repetitive, and it’s a good rule.

Whoops – I meant “Very few go 6 days straight, much less 7 days straight.”

You may want to consider your own rule then. I don’t see any rules nor do I feel I’ve done anything but respond to my differing opinion. I don’t like Bochy, never have, never will, don’t consider him championship material. Good luck.

Moving on- Marquis was sharp, the game was lost because Tim gave up 5 runs. As always, there were positives, however: Belt’s late hit, Kontos continuing to impress, a full day off for Buster, and we’re in first place last I checked.

Gentlemen, will someone please tell me again why the Giants cut Jesus Guzman? This kid kills the Giants in some fashion or another when he plays against them. Also, how many series this year have the Giants won the first two games of a three gamer, only to pack it in on the final game? I can think of five: Oakland (twice), Atlanta, Philadelphia, and now the Friars; and I think that is the second time. I know it’s hard to sweep a series, but good teams find ways to do it. Hell, the G-men could and should be up by 5 or 6 games at this point.
Rest up boys, the big series starts Friday. Find your happy place, F*** L.A., and let’s get it done!

    ————————————————————————————————————————–
A little harsh Loo but there’s some truth in it. My Chinese sister was an aspiring actress in the early ’80’s. She got an audition for some network’s show called TALES OF THE GOLDEN MONKEY. Even though it was just an audition, she still had to sign a contract with the network. She didn’t get the part but the contract said one, she can’t work for any other network for three years or something and two, if she’s in the Los Angeles area and they need someone to sit around at the Regal Beagle on THREE’S COMPANY or something, she has to be one of those people. Needless to say, she hightailed it back to San Francisco.

And zumiee, they told *these* extras to murmur “rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubard, umbrella, umbrella, umbrella”

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 25, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Actually, it was Tales Of The Gold Monkey, but who cares, huh?

“Set in the South Pacific in 1938, the series is about an ex-Flying Tigers pilot named Jake Cutter (Stephen Collins). Now the operator of an air cargo delivery service based on the fictional South Seas island Bora Gora, he flies a red and white Grumman Goose called Cutter’s Goose. Jake’s best friend is his mechanic Corky (Jeff MacKay), a good-hearted alcoholic whose memory is hazy as a result of the quantity of booze he consumes. However, a one-eyed Jack Russell terrier named Jack, who barks once for “no” and twice for “yes” (or the opposite if it suits him) would dispute just who Jake’s best friend really is. Jack wears an eye patch, but used to have a false eye made of opal with a star sapphire center that Jake lost in a poker game—and refuses to let Jake forget it.

Jake’s love interest/U.S. Government spy contact is Sarah Stickney White (Caitlin O’Heaney). She sings in the Monkey Bar as a cover for her espionage activities. The Reverend Willie Tenboom (John Calvin), a phony man of the cloth who likes to “bless” the female natives in private “prayer”, is in actuality a Nazi spy named Willy, with interests in both sides.”

      It lasted one season. Pfffffffffffft!

      🙂

He got a slow jump, and for my money, that ball could have been caught. “Should” is a bit strong, but so is “a hit all the way”. Timmeh was a conundrum again. Strikeouts, then multiple full counts and the dingers. Seems to me he’s falling away to the left on the follow through a lot more than he used to. I’ll call Rags to let him know. BTW, that was one crappy lineup out there today. Marquis was throwing hairballs up there, and phttttt from the Giants. Gawd, do they need a RH bat and bench help. Well, gotta call it a night. So I’ll leave you with these wise/weird words from a movie:

“Ray, people will come Ray. They’ll come to Iowa for reasons they can’t even fathom. They’ll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they’re doing it. They’ll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won’t mind if you look around, you’ll say. It’s only $20 per person. They’ll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they’ll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They’ll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they’ll watch the game and it’ll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they’ll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh… people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.”

    Goodnight, my pirates

Like I’ve been a cabbie for thirteen years. Ten years at night. I still don’t own my own cab. You know why? Because I don’t want to. That must be what I want. To be on the night shift drivin’ somebody else’s cab. You understand? I mean, you become – You get a job, you become the job. One guy lives in Brooklyn. One guy lives in Sutton Place. You got a lawyer. Another guy’s a doctor. Another guy dies. Another guy gets well. People are born, y’know? I envy you, your youth. Go on, get laid, get drunk. Do anything. You got no choice, anyway. I mean, we’re all fucked. More or less, ya know.

I don’t know. That’s about the dumbest thing I ever heard.

It’s not Bertrand Russell. But what do you want? I’m a cabbie. What do I know? I don’t even know what the fuck you’re talking about.

        Maybe I don’t know either.

I originally cut and pasted the .44 magnum line about a woman’s personal parts but I realized…well–there may be children reading.
But, this was fun, Loo. Thanks.
      Goodnight, lads

Schulman reports Surkamp had TJ surgery yesterday.
Typical out of nowhere Giants medical update. For a long time somebody’s “rehabbing” followed by, “uh, Giants report player X had surgery two days ago to correct (insert hidden injury here) …”

I have no idea why that should upset any normal, intelligent baseball fan.

I guess I’m abnormal and dumb. And, loving it…
