A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Future Is Now. Or Maybe Not. No, Probably Not.

Posted in Uncategorized by pawliekokonuts on July 27, 2012

Enough of the obsequiousness. Enough of fellow Flappers saying, “Great thread! Good topic!” This lazily constructed bit of verbal fabric (i.e., “loose thread”) will put a leaden-thump of an end to that, for one day.

Girls, today we will prognosticate the results of this weekend’s series with the Dodgers. (If it is a four-game series, better yet a demonstration of my morning haziness.) You will notice in the following that I haven’t even bothered to name the Dodgers’ winning or losing pitchers or HR hitters. Can’t be bothered.

FRIDAY:

SF 5  LA 3

WP: Cain  Save: Casilla  HRs: Schierholtz, Belt

SATURDAY:

LA 7  SF 3

LP: Zito  HRs: None.

SUNDAY:

SF 4  LA 2

WP: Vogelsong   Save: Affeldt  HRs: Melky

Have at it.

    Great thread Pawlie.

Yeah…I agree, Giants take 2 of 3 from the Bums.

On the HRs…Hmmm, Scheirholtz and Belt…can’t bite on that one.

The Sat game is 1:05 which will make it much less of a pitchers park, so you gotta hope Z can keep the ball in the yard, esp if he starts walking guys again. LA has Barbs going, so it might be who scores last type of game. Sunday vogs vs. kershaw–SF has already beaten him once here this season, doing it again would definitely send a message, even if it’s only July. “I got your ace right here.”

I’m pretty sure that Voggy has beaten him twice this year.

I thought so, too. Checked it out, and you were right.

Vogey beat Kershaw in Smell-A, 2-1 on May 8.

Beat him again in SF, 2-0, on June 26.

Pawlie, another stupendous effort by a stable boy. Simply, a home run. Gold, even! 🙂
To add to the thread, like THAT’S even possible, I will contribute the SP’s for this series although I’m hesitant to do so as it would be like one of Picasso’s worker bees adding a few hurried brush strokes to a finished masterpiece…..

Tonight: Cainer vs someone named Stephen Fife. Fife has had one start this year and he shut down the Pirates on 6 innings, 1 run. He only had one K so I’m assuming he’s a sinker baller type. He’s listed at 6’3 220 lbs so he’s probably more like 6’1 240lbs.
    Saturday: Zito vs Lady B
    Sunday: Kershaw vs Voggy
This is a home series, to be played in San Francisco, Ca and for those of you still yearning for info about this anticipated 3 or 4 games it is to be played against our rivals from southern California, The Los Angels Dodgers………

    My predictions:
What am I supposed to be predicting again?

Well, we know the Dodgers are looking for a starter. Last night a few Flappers were kicking around Dempster or Greinke. Seemed most were hoping for Dempster over Greinke, and I was curious why. Greinke has a better record and is slightly better in Ks/9, but Dempster has the better ERA and WHIP.

Speaking of potential Bums move, check out this piece on potential moves for La Bumbinos…in addition to the SP, there is talk of Victorino (that one has been circulating for a while), or Pence. I had to LMAO at the headline of the piece…jackass was already giving the WS ring to the Bums.

OK, I did my google work for today:

Burton “Bud” Benjamin, later a CBS executive, made a RKO short film about a visit to government research laboratories to see some of the products that will be used in the near future.
He titled it ‘The Future is Now’ 1955

      • eddacker's avatar eddacker said, on July 27, 2012 at 9:05 am

the phrase is often quoted from George Allen, more so than any other sports coach. Benjamin died at age 70 in 1988 and was famouse as Walter Cronkite’s producer. Cronkite called Benjamin one of his closest friends and colleagues who, in addition to his integrity, “was undoubtedly the finest documentary producer with whom I was ever privileged to work.”

Obsequiousness excursus, prognosticating the Giants futurity is a specialised talent possessed by the flapper nation.
that is to say “You nailed this one, baby”. Excellent topic. I predict many responsive comments.
My other predictions are 2 out of 3, Han Ram getting booed and Kershaw pissed that he isn’t pitching against Timmey.
    game one blow-out 6-1 gmen.
game two a Barbara challenge v Barry curve balls 4 -3 giants
game three 1-0 dogers on a Kemp HR.

  14. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 27, 2012 at 8:56 am

Dodgers balked at giving up the guy Cubs wanted for Dempster, which killed that deal. Price for Greinke will be way higher, so I don’t think that happens either. One report I saw has them interested in Shields, who got lit up again yesterday–6 IP 6 H 5 BB 5 earned.
I’m beginning to doubt they have the prospects to acquire a big name SP or another bat. Eo had started games for them already before the Hanley deal, which is why Barney is in there again, and they are loath to give up the other top kid pitcher Zach Lee.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 27, 2012 at 9:06 am

Dogs take 2 out of 3. Who knows which 2. Always many surprises when these 2 teams play each other. LA will piss us off numerous more times before the season is over, this weekend included. But it doesn’t matter, SF will still be in first place afterwards, and will win the division, and Sabean will definitely make a move before Tuesday that will help the team, no matter what Colletti does down south. And when my prediction for this weekend does not come true, I will be even happier about the whole situation. Book it, as Craig often says. Which part, is up to you.

I had wondered where in the hell you were, too, Paul. Good to see you back.

I think 2 of 3, and if Zito wins, then potentially a sweep. But agree…just hard to tell when these two tangle.

Kershaw got roughed-up by the Cards in his last outing. 5.2 IP – 8 ER on 7 hits. 3 BB and 4 Ks.

Vogelsong has beat Kershaw twice (verified this in response to Craig’s thought that Vogey had him twice this year). Also, the Giants have not lost a Vogelsong start since May 8. Both games were close (2-1 in The Latrine and 2-0 at our yard).

Sweep would be sweet…but I am sticking with 2 of 3.

I’m with you, Pawlie, and I’ll prove it: stupid thread, dude. Easily one of the worst.
Can’t prove it, but it just seems right: a series looks to be clearly 2 of 3 with Cy Young and Warren Spahn taking the two. Always seems that a guy named Horace Dunwiddy beats Cy and from there was born the term “that’s why they play the games”…I’m darn sure that Chris Berman didn’t coin the phrase..

If they DL Panda, who comes up? Or is a trade at the ready? Gillaspie is still hanging around, but why? If he was waived and available would you take a flyer on Uribe? The Huff era begins at 3B? Crawford gets the whole left side to himself?

But not disconnected from the Giants. Very enthused about watching the rest of this season.

I thoght it was Herm Edwards who said that . . .

The Horse against Fife? the Giants notoriously struggle against last-minute-no-name callups, but the Giants squeek out a 2-0 win.

Bubbles is his newly found bubbly self, and the Giants win going away, 7-3.

Vogie finally gets a decision. Giants win 5-2.

Truly a pathetic effort, Pawlie. I can only hope to live down to your expectations tomorrow.

I’m with ya on that, AsiaPaul. When i lived in Colo, Jep would come on right about happy hour at the local bar, (Cooper St. Tavern), and right after work, there’d usually be 12-15 people screaming answers at the TV. Final Jep would get one lucky winner a free pitcher. I won quite a few of those. . . .

      • paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on July 27, 2012 at 10:20 am

Good inspiration, a pitcher of beer…. hell, when I was visiting the US last month, back east, sitting in a lazy boy recliner between my two parents (95 and 82) in their respective recliners, watching Jeopardy which is their custom almost every night, I had to refrain from blurting out the answers, because they kinda like to figure out the questions themselves quietly..

Here’s a question: who will be the team’s MVP these last two months of the regular season? And/or, who NEEDS to be the team’s MVP for this team to make it….

  23. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 27, 2012 at 10:12 am

I would sub Paul in for me if I was picking the Flap Jep contestants.
I would also think about trying to acquire Kevin Correia if he could be had for cheap. Apparently, Wandy is replacing him in the rotation and he’s not happy about it. He would be in the same situation in SF but at least it would be a fresh start. Plus, we’ve got the whole *Timmy/Zito* ship to keep righted with either one taking the larger ship (the team) down with them. KC dould be a nice insurance policy.
It would still be the third move I would make. Broxton would be my first choice. It doesn’t sound like the Giants are thinking in that direction. Chris Perez has been linked to us and I don’t like him. It would be nice to kill off 2 needs at once–maybe trade for a closer and a 1B/OF (or even just a 1B since I think Pablo is going to hit the DL). THe 5th starter would be my final priority but really, crossing any of these 3 needs off the list would work for me…….

  24. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on July 27, 2012 at 10:24 am

Bench is key, as most here have mentioned. Sometimes I almost appreciate Bochy’s “plan B” lineups when the regulars need rest because at least the bench is then better for that particular game…. If Pablo is out for awhile, that’s even more than just bench…

  25. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on July 27, 2012 at 10:24 am

Bring Correa back? Sure, if it was on the cheap. He would be that insurance starter if Tim or Zits went tits-up.

I’d take Perez over Broxton if either could be had on the cheap (would not want to deal any top prospects for either). Perez has better numbers and is a couple years younger than Brox.

Still, my first priority is a RH hitter with some pop who can play 1B (OF would be a plus).

  26. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 27, 2012 at 10:43 am

My concern about Sabean picking up a hitter is that he’s really not very good at it. His recent past has been Hillenbrand, Garko, Guillen and Cabrera (I can’t even remember which one. The *bad* one, that’s all I remember)– if there were other recent mid season hitter pick ups I will be happy to stand corrected. I don’t put Cody Ross on the list of successes only because he bank shot that one– he only claimed him to keep the Padres from getting him.
I’m talking about identifying a guy and going after him. Maybe Pat Burrell? But that wasn’t mid season, I think we got The Bat sometime in May of 2010…….

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 27, 2012 at 10:47 am

The Rafters, whose roster will include players from the Diamondbacks, White Sox, Rockies, Blue Jays and Nationals, are one of six Fall League teams that include the leading prospects among all 30 teams in the majors.”

MLB network had their “40 most controversial plays in MLB history” on today.
Giants made the list with Merkle’s Boner, and Donnie Two-trips.
The top two on the list are the blown call at the end of the perfect game attempt, and Denkinger’s brutal blown call in Game 6 of the ’85 series. Two calls that would have been easily fixed with instant replay, and a clear reason why instant replay should be expanded. Denkinger’s explanation is Exhibit A: “I looked to see if the firstbaseman caught the ball, and then I looked down to see if the runner was safe.” Wow. The guy making the call is the person with one of the worst views in the stadium. He’s literally too close to the play to get it right consistently.

Sure, they get calls mostly right, overall, because most calls are not close calls. Their rate on close calls is not that great, though.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 27, 2012 at 12:01 pm

They do usually look at firstbase and listen for the sound, but in certain dramatic situations with big crowds, the crowd drowns out the sound of the ball hitting mitt, and the umps are left basically guessing.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 27, 2012 at 12:11 pm

Seems to me the last few years the first base calls have been regularly missed. Sometimes laughably wrong, 1/3 to 1/2 step wrong, and that’s just ridiculous. Replay fixes that with the first look within 10 seconds. Trapped balls are a little more difficult, but not much with all the angles available now. The trap the other night against the Pads would have been easily fixed with the first replay review in 10 seconds. Instead, the umps had to have a conference and it took 2 minutes, at least. The argument against replay, that it slows the game down, is utter nonsense on it’s face. You have a fifth ump in the press box or wherever and he views every play. If the first base ump flubs the call, the wronged dugout sees the first replay within 10 seconds these days, and knows whether it’s wrong or right. Push an appeal button, and the pressbox ump rules ASAP. It can be done easily for these types of calls…

Now it begins. 2 hour preview/build-up to the opening ceremony. The audience in the stadium are already arriving and being given 3-D glasses. BBC has only 4 HD channels (one without commentary and one with AD for the blind) same for SD and one over the air and one 3D broadcast channel. This is the first BBC 3D all previous have been “testing” broadcasts.

I mean, we have the technology to do away with umpires all together; except one in the replay room. Look at hawk-eye that does line calls in tennis. my worry using technology is would teams have a group, like doping, that are working to cheat or defeat technology to gain an advantage?

70 days 8,000 torchbearers have carried the flame past millions and within 10 miles of every part of the country including trips into Ireland. It was last seen earlier today when the entire country had bell ringers out and ringing for 3 minutes in unison. The torch itself was @ the Tower Bridge and the big question is how will the flame get from there to be lit inside the stadium. I still remember the archer shooting the flame across the stadium and into the cauldron to start the 1992 games. And when Ali lit the flame in Atlanta. There is speculation in the newspapers here that Ali may be involved. He is beloved by the British people and has said many times how much he loves Britain.

Here’s my replay to do list, in order of what should be installed first. I don’t see how the umps union could be against replay, just put a 5th ump in the pressbox seeing the local tv feed and replays. The fatass older umps ready to retire could get that gig, and extend their pension accruals for 5 years. All this crap putting a central replay center in NYC is totally unnecessary and overkill, the usual Budfoolery.

    1. First base safe/out calls.
    2. Fair/foul calls down the lines.
    3. Flyball trapped / caught calls.
    4. Home plate safe / out calls in any inning, but only where the ump missed the catcher dropping//juggling the ball.
    5. Home plate safe / out call where the call decides the game on a walk off

They show replays on the flat screens in the concession areas at ATT. Just not on the jumbotron. The other night when the umps botched the initial call on that trapped catch v. the Pads, I am sure that they heard the crowd groan and boo when the concession area TVs showed the replay. Then, the umps went into the group hug to talk…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 27, 2012 at 1:38 pm

Chuck, I take that back, partially. They show replays in the concessions, but maybe the crowd boos could come from hearing the radio broadcast that reports the botched ump call. I don’t know personally if they censor controversial replays in the concession areas…

  55. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 27, 2012 at 2:31 pm

It’s just a big difference in the culture of officiating in the different sports. The umps finally got together in that Padre game to get the call right about the trapped ball and Krukow gushed on and on about what a great thing they were doing, like they had solved world hunger. In football or basketball, another official will routinely run over and confer to get the call right. And they do it quickly, and it’s no big deal. The emphasis is on getting the call right, hence those sports adopting more replay, and more quickly than baseball. In baseball, there’s a whole icky personality cult thing to the umpires. And it’s part of the reason they’re so unpopular with fans. And, of course, there’s the whole kabuki theater manager/umpire argument thing that’s allowed in baseball, that isn’t allowed in other sports. As Snarkk and some others have noted, those manager/umpire arguments take longer than a replay system would.

All umpires, in the baseball HOF. As far as I can tell, there are no refs in the NFL HOF. The umpire has always been promoted as part of the game, part of the entertainment, way more than refs in football. The football refs are part timers, anyway. The ego thing in baseball umps probably comes from that. Otherwise, why should we continue to accept blatantly wrong calls that can change the game when the calls can so easily be fixed? Because that would damage the ego of an ump? That is ridiculous on its face, yet, clearly part of the equation…
