Angel in the OF…or not?
With his latest deal for Hunter Pence, Sabean has apparently solidified the two corner OF spots between Henter Pence and Melky Cabrera, hopefully for this year and beyond. So that leaves CF for today’s discussion.
Prior to the last two days at Coors, Pagan was 5 for his last 26 with 0 BBs and 5 Ks. Vs. the Rox pitching staff so far he has gone 7 for 10 with 2 BBs, scored 6 drove in 4 and homered. All this while back in the leadoff spot and mostly hitting right handed.
After a great May that saw his OPS for the month at .884, June it dropped to ..608, and July fell further to .550. The OB went from .422 to .302 and finally .244 in July. Back to leadoff? Hmnn…gotta admit that was quite a ballsy move by Bochy. Pagan has hit better at home, with the OB 50 points higher, and has also done better vs. LHP, again the OPS being 50 pts higher.
Unfortunately, the similar drop off from blanco certainly had something to do with that. Eerily, Blanco’s OPS for May was almost exactly the same, and his June and July numbers also plummeted dramatically. June and July his OB numbers dropped to .277 and .310; his pre-AS game OPS was .711, post-AS .519. Ouch. He is 2 fo his last 20 (with 4 BBs thrown in), but unlike Pagan his OPS is 90 pts higher on the road than at ATT.
So what do you do? Is this the spark that gets Pagan back toward the stats he was putting up earlier, particularly as a leadoff? Can Blanco be a capable back up at any OF position, or does he deserve more PT than that? Is Gary Brown a Sept. call up? If so, how much PT does he deserve in the heat of a pennant race that might bring back quite a lot of “torture” for Giants fans? How much run do you think Bochy would give him, or would that depend more on whether Pagan can keep up the good work? Next year I guess, is still too far out, but I’ve already seen a few posts by those not inclined to keep Pagan around.
As always, just when you seemingly come up with a few answers, more questions abound. I’ll leave you with this observation from our intrepid reporter Snarkk, as posted here 7/25 at 8:57. “I don’t know how it looked on TV, but from my view in the Park today, I thought Pagan was going to get to that fly to left center in the 4th (Lincecum game). He got a slow jump, and for my money, that ball could have been caught.” We all saw the fab DP with crawford and belt, and of course last two days—so who is the real Angel Pagan?
I liked the idea of having another Pagan on the Giants. I was more worried about his attitude. But now I have seen some ‘inefficient’ outfield defence and the peak and valley hitting. the more questions I see are payroll for 2013 and Brown; will he be the CF for 2013 and beyond?
I believe Pagan will thrive in playoff atmosphere. If he does like going into the post season he needs to steadily help his team get there.
Lets hope for a hot streak. Players like this are spectacularly good and sometimes just as bad.
By the way Edd nice CC pick up. Getting rid of Uggly was worth it just as an isolated move
Uggla will get some HRs the rest of the way, but it left me with no 2bman, so I chose The Riot
added Harper and a 3rd class closer, too. Trade deadline friday?
My money is that the Giants will sign F/A to be Michael Bourn this winter.Gives them the true best leadoff hitter since Brett Butler. They will be looking good with MelkyLF BournCF Pence RF covering alot of ground at ATT.Great mix of power ( Pence)speed some power & Avg Melky,And lighting speed Bourn.Add Gary Brown as the 4th OF and the “Wow” factor is complete.
With Brown they could also give him alittle more experience at AAA without rushing him,and just keep Blanco around for his speed as well and can play all 3 OF positions.Feel the Giants are really going to be exciting to watch in the OF next year for sure.Just get the Melkman Signed!!!
as to the topic, I don’t think we can take too much out of the last two games for any individual, including Pagan. It has just been great for the team to get out of their ATT funk and blast some balls around consistently for once. Scutaro is hitting well, Posey is driving towards NL MVP considerations and then you’ve got Pagan hitting lately, too.
Hopefully they keep it going today………
CF? Don’t forget Aaron Rowand is cheap, tan and rested.
Lqtm Bozo..Lasr I heard Gamer was doing a few Whitesox’s radio/Tv gigs.Probably screwing up players stances in the box, saying they should bat just like me.
No way Pagan comes back next year IMO.Boch was pissed off when he bruised his fingers slamming his bat against the wall in the dugout, especially with Panda out,it was just a stupid thing to do and shorten the bench for a few games.
Melky’s gonna cost big $$$, maybe $100 million. Gotta believe the Phils will be in the mix…
OK, the worlds strongest woman is Zhou Lulu (pronounced shoe-U lulu). that means tommorow the big boys are going for gold in weightlifting.
today California will have some excellent Olympic watching as womens beach vb has 8 teams bumb set and spiking towards the semi-finals. Also an Olympic first – women’s boxing gets under way.
Just before noon PDT are the semis in the worlds fastest man race. Finals are 1:55.
Old School wrestling, ping pong finals and, if ever there was an obscure sport to enjoy today is men’s team foil play-off day in fencing.
It wasn’t much of a reach to for Bochy to try Pagan in the 1 again- he’s batted there the majority the time in the bigs– 180 games. His OBP there (.337) is not ideal but his BA (.297) and OPS ( .807) are very good- the OPS is significant because, like Torres in 2010, that added pop from the one is unusual for a lead off guy- the average is .689 this year. He’s sort of a tweener, really, in an ideal situation he’s a 6. The real Pagan? We’re seeing him- erratic in the field and at the plate- he’s helped over what Torres did in 2011 but Angel doesn’t look like a guy who be in one place for long from here on out. His best hope fror staying here is if Melky can’t be signed.
Pagan CF
Theriot 2B
Cabrera LF
Posey 1B
Pence RF
Scutaro 3B
Sanchez C
Crawford SS
Lincecum RHP
nice line by Bochy about Pagan: “i didn’t know he had teeth”
No way do I see Gary Brown getting a call up Sept 1st.
Bochy didnt even play Buster when he came up as we all watched him rotting on the bench in disbelief as Boch stuck with “Big Titties”
heh-heh- big titties
See where the Giants signed Xavier Nady to a minor league deal.Smart move, give him 3 weeks to work on his swing ,then im betting he will be called up Sept1 for added RH bench strength.
Another funny line by Bochy: Now that Emmanuel Burriss is gone,Joaquin Arias is probably the emergency catcher, although, manager Bruce Bochy said,”He probably doesn’t know it.”
If this were the English Premier Soccer league, the Rockies would get demoted to second division.
They’re beyond god awful.
pretty easy to see why Dirrrty lost Friday night, he has tendinitis and is on the DL
Tim on pace for a 351 pitch CG…
Yeah, but only 9 runs so we should win this one
Off topic, but this annoys the hell out of me- Carly Patterson, Olympic medalist, is NOT an organ donor, she has agreed to be one, like millions of Americans..
What is up with Carly? I ticked the box: anything you need.
Lincecum RBI, now settle down and get your pitches down.
Tim down to 18 pitches an inning and game era under 2.
props to Scutaro for letting that throw go through and Hector for holding on.
Timmeh gutted this one out. You give up one run, that is commendable. He still is struggling, trying to find whatever it is that he’s lost. But, I’ll take a one run quality start every time…
yeah, competitive spirit, I saw that look on his face in his last outing and I have seen it not as many times as I would like to.
here comes the pen
Bad bounce in center field and dogers tie 1-1 top of the 6th
Castillo homers off of Blanton cubbies up 2-1
lincicum struggling with fastball command. lot of fastballs up. nice to see pence having a day.
I got distracted watching women’s beach volleyball. My 15yo daughter wondered aloud if the Americans wore underwear under those scanty whatchamacallits. I mumbled something about sand. #awkward
lqtm
Stellar outing for Kontos…
Our bullpen used to record almost-automatic outs, or maybe my memory is just 2010-colored. Ugh. Different kind of #torture.
three relievers in the seventh isn’t good. but at least romo got out of it.
Fear the Beard, 2.0. Nice job, Sergio.
Losing out on Broxton may turn out to be huge…
I’ll say, I _really_wanted to see him help us this year.
He gave up a game winner last night, a double I think.
the Reds with Broxton in the 8th followed by Chapman.
Scully just commented on the Col – SF score adding: “the story of the game is Lincecum. In his last 5 games his era has been 2.53 and if he wins tonight, which he should, he will be 3-1. Dodgers got Ramirez and Victorino, but if the Giants get Tim back, watch out!”
Cubs reliever Maine strikes out 2 walks 3 and a HBP and it is tied
next batter doubles, 4-2 dogers
Pence chokes up on the bat and wears the high sox, what is not to like?
Bochy throws Belt a bone
Let’s wrap this bad boy up
Cubbies beating the Dodgers by a run but it’s still early
Oops
Rockies are like Jason Voorhees
Can a reliever turn it on and off, it being the mentality to pitch as if every batter counts? Or can he say to himself, I don’t care if this batter homers, I’m throwing strikes.
Can they refuse to leave Colorado?
maybe they can take some of Co with ’em. Momentum, hitting, quiet crowds.
come on show the fans with the brooms
Take the sweep and get the hell outta Denver. Hopefully the Rocks can win a game or two against that team from LA.
the bullpen sure doesn’t inspire right now.
Man. Well, it’s a win
Well, I enjoyed all three wins. Yeah, the pen was a bit “rockie”, that happens a lot here-to everybody. Great series no matter how you cut it.
Scutaro is a big addition. Guy is a pro. Shoot, he not only took Burriss’ place, he may be taking Crawford’s place when Panda is back. Scutaro can play anywhere in the IF, he needs to play just about everyday, somewhere, to get that bat in there…
Gyros did what they needed to do, should do, and that’s beat up on a sad sack club. Everybody else has. Nice sweep, hope the hitting now will continue. Pence and Scutaro are each a real help offensively now, they extend that lineup, especially when Panda gets back. Pagan, Scutaro, Melky, Posey, Panda, Pence — that would be a pretty decent first 6. I’d leave Scutaro 2nd and put Theriot in 8th, with the 1bMan du Jour at 7th…
Heck of a weekend, but the righty relief corps and closer situation are a dark cloud…
LOL. You sound like Glen Dickey- he was a bad weather guy- storms abrewin’ dark clouds gathering..I live on the bright side of the road..

They now better balanced. The worse was the Nate Belt Crawford P and Blanco, making it too easy on the opposing mgr going to the lefty out of the pen and Bochy unable to counter with much.
This has not been the regular LU this weekend.
yarp. And don’t forget, Sandoval will be back soon
The bullpen is a concern, but what to do? I’m not feeling super confident about them these days, and from what I sensed on the Bochy show before the game, he’s pretty concerned, too. We just have to hope they do better. Overall, they HAVE done better earlier this season, so we know what they are capable of.
Regarding Pagan, he made a strong case for the leadoff spot for a while. But they’ll have to mix and match if he starts throwing a bunch of oh-fers out there. It seems likely that Blanco will get some of the games, and then we’ll see how well Pagan responds to sharing time with him.
Night all.
Night, twin
Just got done watching the game. TImmy was wildly effective. The walks could have hurt more than they did. But, yikes, even for Colo, the pen was all over the place. Kontos, 8 balls in 9 pitches? Let’s hope they all get back on the beam together. Good to see Pence get a coiple hard knocks.
Off to St. Helena- I’m bringing my WebCam, the doctors have agreed to film my hernia surgey, we thought you’d all enjoy it…
OK, I’m kidding- about filming, not the surgery. See ya later..
