A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Most Important?

Good Morning Flappers!

Trust you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. I read where there were some access issues yesterday, but assuming all is fine now.

I was gone for the weekend (competing with the dogs, again), so was not on the blog much (I haven’t even had the time to go back and scan the last couple of days of comments).

Fantastic game yesterday. I was watching the game, Zito was cruising right along, and all was good in the world of the Giants. A couple of Snake runs, a string of hits, the bullpen’s inability to get an out, and all of a sudden, Zona had the lead. Well, I had a ton of things to do outdoors, so I left the game at 7-4 (what a dumbass move…those chores could have waited). Anyway, what an exciting finish with Scutaro providing the tying run and game-winning hit.

I’ll be honest, when Sabes made the move to acquire Scoots, I was lukewarm on the deal. At 36 years old, I really questioned how much he had in the tank. But, on the flip-side, the team really needed the depth at the time. I have always admired the way Scutaro plays the game…professional in every sense…a true gamer. And there were certainly times where I hated him when he stuck it to the Giants as a member of the A’s.

With that said, what do you feel are the biggest acquisitions that have helped put the Giants where they are? Was it Scutaro? Crazy Horse??

Good morning my brother Chi. Yeah, what an amazing comeback yesterday. Buster said it was probably the best game of the year. Actually, the last two games shows the resillience of this club, as well as keeping the Bums at bay.
Once Zito, Mota and Kontos coughed up the lead, I thought for sure the Giants were done. But this is 2010 2.0, and the Giants responded. Boy did they ever. Buster’s game tying hit in the ninth just gave him a few ore votes for NL MVP. What can you say about Scoots? ( Scoots? Is that for the 18-34 demograpic base?) A true veteran who ight be this year’s 2010 version of Cody Ross. Hard to pick between Angel and ahem, Scoots.
Both have contributed mightily down the stretch. When was the last time the Giants had really good 1-2 hitters to set the table? My vote right now would have to be Pagan. Starting August 3rd, after they lost 3 of 4 to the Mets, he told Bochy he would give leadoff a shot. Turns out it was a shot in the arm the team needed.
While it’s premature to talk postseason, the last two games are pretty indicative that the Giants are well on their way. Just a great TEAM effort all around.

    1. You wrote: “…on the flip-side…” Make it, on the Flap side. Yeah. A new term, ready to go viral. Or at least virile.
    2. Hard for me to just pick one, but, sure, Mr. Oxymoron (angelic pagan, pagan angel) and Senor Scooterville are right up there as great pickups.

Speaking of viral, I tried to get something trending on Twitter yesterday about our Venezuelan presence. By my count, we have at least four of those countrymen: Pablo, “Little Panda” Hector Sanchez, Gregor Blanco, and Marco Scutaro. #Venezuelanquartet

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 4, 2012 at 8:32 am

Venezuelans: You forgot Machi, who had the saving shutdown inning in his first MLB appearance after toiling 10 years in the minors.

Los Venezuelanos de San Francisco. Pablo, Hector, Gregor, Marco and Juan. And I like the “Little Panda” ’cause on telly they look like they could exchange uniforms no poblano!

so we have Panda, Li’l Panda, White Shark, Scooter and “the new guy”.
      B-)

Through the ebb and flow of this season there have been many that have contributed to get us where we are today. Melky’s hitting at the start of the year and it seems the team circling the wagons when he got busted for being an idiot. Blanco’s first half was a spark and that catch in the perfecto, well, I always remember it. Pagan’s born again as a lead off hitter has been awesome to watch. After getting his head twisted this way and that way, Belt seems to be figuring it out. Theriot filling in helped us stay afloat until Mr. Scutaro came in to solidify the position and second hole. Crawford started out terrible both on Offense and Defense but now looks to be a top of the line defender at SS plus he’s hitting .246. Arias filling in for Panda and now SS was a huge surprise to me. New guy Nady has come up big, Hector Sanchez is looking pretty solid behind the plate and a huge upgrade from Vera’s kid. Of the three Ps (Posey, Panda and Pence), Posey has been scarey good following the injury, I would like to see him actually tag someone at the plate though. Pablo being Panda, some time on the DL and that little thing in Santa Cruz hasn’t stopped him. Pence is starting to make a difference and when these three gel, watch out. Vogs proving everyone but his wife wrong, Bum and Cain solid, Tim not having a first half that anyone expected seems to be turning it on a bit. Sit’s first half was a surprise but these last couple of games reminds me of the Sit of old. Casilla’s closing in the first half and now the CBC have all contributed.
So many contributions but what I’m loving the most is everyone seems to have the rest of the team’s back these days. Somebody seems to step in and pick up a teammate if he doesn’t get the job done and that is awesome.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 4, 2012 at 8:45 am

Excellent points, John. Yes…all of those contributions do in fact reflect that this year’s version has been a true team effort in every sense. And the recent trend of come-back wins is excellent…a new hero every day. I like it!

Tough game today. Kennedy has been rough on the Giants this year (2-0 with a 2.51 ERA). Would be huge to get the win and nail down the series today!

What the Brandon boys have done the last month might be even bigger than that of the more publicized names- how long has it been since we had a line up that had to be contended with top to bottom? And I’ll stress again that the “rally of the day” was in the 8th against Hernandez, a much tougher guy than Putz, who had blown away vets Pence and Nady before the kids (Hector, Crawford, Belt) absolutely undressed him with lasers…
    Belt last 4 weeks: .342 BA .419 OBP .474 Slg. .892 OPS
Crawford last 4 weeks .317 BA .364 OBP .780 OPS

good for them, those were my guys on your return to stable post. Even tho I was totally against keeping him at start of season, I give a lot of credit to Theriot for doing his part to mentor crawford and help him get through early part of the season. Theriot played creditable D and got timely hits in #2 spot but more importantly helped craw settle down and mature and allow himself to grow into the player he is today.
And now T is basically out of a job with addition and fine play of Scutaro and Arias in middle IF and yet you still see him cheering guys on from the bench….class act, esp from a guy who is painfully aware he might not be here next year. tho maybe he goes out with another ring, just like last year.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 4, 2012 at 9:46 am

I thought Burriss deserved his shot at the regular 2nd base job, as did Craig and others- and that was the correct position, IMO.He actually played pretty well there and initially hit acceptably but his total lack of any extra base power at all anmd re-emerging defensive liabilities did him in. That’s why you have guys like Theriot. .

Giants for the month of August hit .325 (93-286) with RISP bringing their season total to .255 (310-1215). I would say they are turning that stat around.
Keep in mind that this Sunday’s game against the Bums is on ESPN at 5. Zito against Kershaw.

MY PICK 4 the team pic-up guy is Marco, he is becoming a leader on AND off the field.
Franchez 2.0 at the very least.
I love all the things Bozo pointed out, including the totally brilliant return of Posey.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 4, 2012 at 9:50 am

Well, it might be meaningful for one of the teams. The Giants will have wrapped up the division but the Ddgers could sttll have a shot at a WC.

I would hardly count on Zito going Sunday. If Vogelsong looks back on track tonight and considering how he’s pitched in his Kershaw matchups, it would be hardly be surprising to see Zito skipped- Vogelsong would still be on normal rest. Bochy doesn’t like screwing with the rotation so it may not happen, but he has to be thinking about it pending tonight’s game..

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 4, 2012 at 10:54 am

Chi, I said yesterday I think that the biggest mid-season acquisition by any team in the league, as far as immediate impact goes, was the Giants getting Scutaro. Still feel that way. He has done nothing but get timely hits and play solid defense.

Pagan really softened the blow of losing Cabrera from the get-go. He turned it on seemingly the day Melky was shit-canned.

So, mid-season acquisition goes to Scooter.

Start-of-year acquisition would have been Melky, now it’s Pagan.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 4, 2012 at 11:56 am

Pagan’s legacy for this season and his chances of being pursued by the Giant’s rests on his September performance. As does who will be the best mid-season acquisition.
Obviously everyone will be scrutinized as to how they perform in a pennant race, but the vets properly have more expected of them.

My key is Scutaro. Guy has been nails offensively and defensively. And, a clubhouse leader, including showing the young guys how to take an AB. He’s the Freddie we missed. I’d bring him back next year at 2b with a one and one contract. I don’t like his age, but he seems in very good shape, quick bat, good arm. Panik won’t be ready until 2014, if at all, and Theriot could be the utility guy again. And, yeah, I said a couple of years ago they should get him…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 4, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Theriot, Scutaro, and Arias should all be in the runnung for the 2nd base job. And after many years in a Pill-like status, it might be time to take a look at Brock Bond.Whether he’s considered a prospect or not, he should be rewarded with a chance to show that he can play here….

Mets-fan relatives lamenting the loss of Pagan and the acquisition of Vungo, whom 99.7% of us here will always love. Weird how as recently as two weeks ago many of us, including me, would take Vungo back on a waiver deal in a 2010 heartbeat. The thing is now, not sure there’d be much room. But, yeah, I’d take him.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 4, 2012 at 12:18 pm

Wouldn’t mind seeing Vungo back either, albeit, he made a big blunder yesterday. Specifically, Carlos Beltran, who’s day to day (and did not play yesterday), still managed to contribute to the 5-4 win. When it looked like New York’s Andres Torres led off the ninth with a double, Beltran urged manager Mike Matheny to appeal, saying Torres never touched first base. The decision worked, as first base umpire Dave Rackley ruled that he missed it, paving the way for Jason Motte’s 33rd save to be much easier than it initially seemed.

“Our MVP of the game today is Carlos Beltran, who never hit the field,” Matheny told the Cardinals’ official website.

I had a thread on who we all thought would step up in September. My call was Pence and Panda. Too early to say, but I like how they’ve started. The thing is: Arias, Pagan, Buster- they won’t always be the “best hitter on the planet” (and PLEASE-retire that term)…other guys will have to do it- of the starters, only Buster can be reeasonably be counted on to have another big month. That’s why I’m wary of choosing a guywho was hot in August to lead the way in September. But we can all hope.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 4, 2012 at 12:48 pm

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 4, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Certainly do-able. They would go 15-12 rest of the way for 92. IF they win 92…Bums would have to go 20-6 rest of the way to end up with 93.

I think 90 will win it. (Not saying Giants will end up with 90 wins…just saying I think 90 wins the West).

If one reviews the monthly splits, it’s actually a safer bet to go with a guy who had a poor August than one who was hot- presuming the guy can hit at all, of course. I made the Buster exception because he *has* hit well in 3 straight months.

  22. demp28's avatar demp28 said, on September 4, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Giants at 77 wins right now. eddacker says 92, meaning the Giants go 15-12 from here on out. I’m going to go out on a limb and say 94. I can see G-men go 17-10 the rest of the way. I also think with the Giants final homestand coupled with the Bums four games at home vs. the Cards and their six game roadie to WSH and CIN, the division might be settled somewhere in that timeframe.
Salty, last I heard on KNBR, it was Zito and Kershaw going Sunday. Kershaw is pitching today with a team off day on Thursday, so someone is going to get skipped in the rotation. IMO. ESPN might have a say in that also. I say that sarcastically.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 4, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Demp, it’s actually a fair call by MLB . . . Headley was 4-for-5 Sunday at Colorado with his 23rd homer and a career-high six RBI in the Padres’ 11-10 loss. The six RBI were two shy of the Padres’ single-game record and the most by a Padre since Adrian Gonzalez drove in six runs on May 19, 2010 at Dodger Stadium. Since Aug. 1, Headley is hitting .328 with 11 homers and 37 RBI. He led the major leagues with 10 homers and 31 RBI in August.

Hopefully, as you said, Buster will cop the NL MVP.

I’m still kicking myself in the ass from when my daughter asked me to get standing room only tix for one of the home World Series games, and I couldn’t pull the trigger on 3+ bills. (And immediately…that evening…I knew I had made the wrong decision.)

Anyone playing FL football this year? I was asked to join two leagues this season, but am passing. Sort of burned out on FL, especially football – which I consider the hardest FL sport to play. Too many injuries, many that are not announced until almost game time, i.e., both of my FL teams last year were frustrating (e.g., still thinking about hunting down Adrian Peterson and Rashard Mendenhall . . . Two punk pussies that I will NEVER EVER draft again. HA.).

  31. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 4, 2012 at 5:04 pm

Shit, I had Chris Johnson last year. Coming off his career year, he holds out and sucks for 3/4 of the season. Every week I was waiting for his breakout.

Baseball is much harder. Too many games.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 4, 2012 at 5:11 pm

Exactly how I felt with Mendenhall and Peterson. One league I was in Chuck, also had defensive players too (not just an NFL defense). More times than not, I was making 5-6 roster changes minutes before the first Sunday game because these guys came up lame. Yeah, Johnson was another POS running back that didn’t do jack shit last year. Besides the top 3-4 quarterbacks, the only player that was money every week was Calvin “Megatron” Johnson . . . Whom I unfortunately did not have on my team. 😦

Earlier this season Crawfish had a “missed first base” called on him by a young ump, which cost Craw a double. And, he touched the bag even more obviously than here. This (ch)ump was apparently young, too. Is that call some sort of macho deal, rite of passage among umps? I don’t understand how you can call that unless the baserunner basically misses the bag by 3 or 4 inches. And, how the hell does the Cards’ bench see that to ask for the appeal?…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 4, 2012 at 5:31 pm

Ya asking me snarkk? No idea. I only read the article. Twin and Mac apparently watched the game or had access to the videos. Umps miss a lot of calls.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 4, 2012 at 5:53 pm

No, not asking you in particular Blade. Rhetorical question, of sorts. I’m getting tired of umps making stupid calls, especially at first base. The next replay appeal scenario should be allowed for first base out/safe calls. There are lots of bad calls made there, and they’re EZ to see/fix on most replays. It’s laughable how badly some of the calls are missed. Sometimes 1/3 or 1/2 step wrong. It’s ridiculous. This rounding the bag thing is a total joke. If the vid replays are so close as to be debatable that the ump was wrong/right on it, then it shouldn’t have been called at all…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 4, 2012 at 6:05 pm

Yeah, on one hand, I appreciate the animated “theater” that umpires, players, and managers bring to the game, when a call is disputed. Other sports can’t duplicate these verbal joust fests that turn into high comedy (frequently). However, when your team is on the wrong side of a call, the only thing I want is instant replay appeals implemented ASAP.

Seriously though, the umps overall do a satisfactory job and I don’t get too excited about regular season calls. Post season is a different animal all together. For example, see Don Denkinger, Oct. 26, 1985.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 4, 2012 at 5:57 pm

Kat, I haven’t had the energy to read much about the particulars on it. On radio, I’ve heard the NFL talking heads essentially claim they’re taking a hard line and using scabs to prevent the destruction of the game, and I haven’t heard the other side. Whatever money it’s worth, can’t be much in the scheme of $10 billion in annual NFL receipts. I call stupid on the situation, without knowing all that much about it. The regular refs normally suck, so how can these scabs not be a disaster? I have heard that college refs are essentially not being scabs, because their groups told them they wouldn’t be allowed back to reffing college if they scabbed for a while in the NFL…

The math you guys came up with above tells me that the Giants only have to be at or just above .500 on the remaining games to really put the pressure on LA to win like crazy the rest of the way to make that last 3 game set in LA mean something. Giants obviously gotta want to come into that last series up by at least 4 games, but at worst 2 up, making LA have to sweep to sneak in…

Any of you remember game one of the Braves/Giants series? Specifically, the 4th inning? It should’ve been a nifty “strike ’em out, throw ’em out” combo for the Braves. Instead, nanoseconds after Pat Burrell whiffed, Giants catcher Buster Posey was called safe at second base and thus credited with his first career steal. The replays, however, show he was plainly out on Brooks Conrad’s swipe tag. The rub: One out later, Cody Ross singled to left and Posey scored what would prove to be the game’s only run. Posey’s comments after the game? “I’m glad there’s no instant replay.” Indeed, he, the Giants, and all Flappers should be.

    • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on September 4, 2012 at 6:34 pm

Let me tell you. Braves fans knew it and remember it. When I went to Turner Field in June, Craig Patterson, who with his son provides a touching story in my book, brought it up. His young son is a catcher. I mentioned Buster Posey, Georgia kid. Son likes Buster well enough. Not Daddy. Because of that play. Mentioned it. Hey, was Buster supposed to volunteer an out?

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 4, 2012 at 6:34 pm

Blade, I’d leave second base tag calls out of my replay review zone. Too much movement and dirt and ankles and hands around the bag and the glove. First base calls are EZer to review. Ball in mit vs. cleats on bag. All in the same vid shot — which got there first? The occasional swipe tag resulting from a bad throw at 1B can be dealt with, too — usually that’s a high tag on or missing the body that’s EZ to see on replay…

The math being thrown around about SF probably just needing to go a bit above .500 the rest of the way to win the division is comforting. The “wild card” in that scenario is the amount of games remaining against LA. The ol’ “destiny is in our own hands” thing, which works both ways. Giants take 2 of 3 from LA this weekend and that will likely do it. LA sweeps again and it’s a whole new ballgame. Ah, September baseball. The only thing better is October baseball.
