A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

This Just In . . .

Not sure who’s turn it is but i thought I would toss this up. Is it hyperbole to suggest that this is a huge start for the vogster? I said earlier that i would like to see him skip a turn, not as punishment but to get him some extra rest. I have no idea who you’d start in such an event. maybe Mota? see if you can get three or more innings. than Bruce can do his usual bull pen dance. With the way he’s using the bullpen, it would mean some extra wear on it as well. It’s amazing to me that there isn’t anyone in the minors that jumps out at you and says, “give that guy a start”.

On another note, I’m actually glad to see the dodgers putting up some sort of a fight. I think the g’s need to stay battle tested and never feel like it’s in the bag.

The A’s are astounding. And what a big win for Snodfart. all in all a good time to be into Bay Area sports. Enjoy your Sunday knuckleheads.

This is something that started with sbnation and, as far as I can tell with what I’ve read on the internet, was a false-positive finding that set off this alarm all over the place. Coming to the Flap, like anywhere you go on the internet, is a decision you have to make but I feel confident from what I’ve heard from wordpress that this site is safe.

I guess we’re sick of talking about Zito.

Battle tested? Hmm. That’s another interesting thring to chew on. Is it better to cruise to a division win or have to play some tough meaningful games down the stretch? Is it irrelevant? 2002 they won 10 of 11 to secure the WC, 2010 it came down to the last day. In 2000 and 2003 they waltzed to a division title and… oops. Sabean was talking the other day about difficulty of schedule and said he would prefer playing some tough games down the stretch.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 16, 2012 at 11:35 am

I prefer a combination of playing some tough games, with a bit of enough clinch slack to get the starters some rest via a skipped start or just a 4 or 5 inning start to keep sharp, even if they’re throwing well. And, a few days rest, only a few, for the top Pen guys to get some snap back in their stuff…

Agree Snarkk….Im sure Boch wants to get this race over with and rest his starting Players /Pitchers and his key BP guy some.Keep the metal to the peddle and it should happen soon.Still a fine line right now, rest some and you could give up potential wins.Boch will get them the rest, and still keep them sharp for the playoffs, while the scub back ups and BP back ups get some work in the day after they clinch.

Well, seeing as it’s relatively early, some may be watching football. Though I’m surely not much of a Raiduhs fan anymore, as they struggle in Miami against the Dolphins right now, here’s a shout out to celebrating the history of football in Miami to get the morning going with hearts pumping towards a Giants victory today for Vogy. Hopefully the Niners have a roadie to Miami in the next year or two, wouldn’t mind going to see that and all the related festivities. I particularly like the player at 1.53 to 2.05 minutes in, unlike a lot of faux stuff these days, the patriotism here is uplifting. Caution, not for the faint of heart…

BTW, love the “10” photo and JL in his 1979 Boo uni. Absolutely classic. Could not, would not happen today. So far from today’s Giants reality, it may have actually happened in an alternative universe…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 16, 2012 at 12:24 pm

That is a classic. Poor Johnnie Lee, AKA “Redneck Disaster.” He had quite a drawl, from Kentucky I think and was big fan of Davey Concepcion of the Reds. Epitome of good field no hit.
Meanwhile SC Alum Reggie Bush making Raiders pay. The west is a winnable division, but you don’t want to start 0-2…and the Fins aren’t likely to win many other games either imo.

Though I say I don’t take winning the NL West for granted, let’s face it: I do take it for granted to the point I’d be forever crestfallen and stunned if we did not persist and win it. So, given that we win it [though, no, I do not exactly take it for granted, given recent and older baseball history for September], I think the games afterward are key. Mre accurately, the attitude of the organization afterward is key. You want to possess a fragile [pronounced to rhyme with “aisle” in the U.K.] blend of rest, assurance, momentum, and fire in the belly. Hard to do. The Rays, last year’s miracle-finish team for the wild card, did not have much left for the playoffs. The NY Giants were drained for the WS of 1951. So: will the Reds be flat if the clinch early? Did the Giants clinching of the NL West in 2010 benefit them? Look at the Rockies in 2007. They had a phenomenal charge to end the regular season, kept it going in the playoffs, and hit a concrete abutment of Red Sox in the Series. Are these legit considerations, or do they mean nothing?

I like the way it’s worked out for the Giants’ and Niner games the last two weeks. Dear ESPN and NBC: can you keep it that way? Thanks, guys…

Great shot of Johnny Lee. In my book, the “Boo” jersey was one of the few good things he did in a Giant uniform. I’d be curious to see how his fielding percentage stacked up against his peers back then. I remember the dude making the occasional great play, but mucking up a good many routine ones. To me, no one player better summarizes how hard it was to be a Giants fan in the mid/late 70’s than LeMaster.
Snarrk—thanks so much for the uplifting video. I found the footage in the 1:20 range particularly noteworthy.

Watching the Rauiders- is there an “expert” on the NFL who thought Bush could run effectively as an every down back? I can’t think of one. Good for him…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 16, 2012 at 1:15 pm

He was his old electric self out there, while the raiders were mostly awful against a not highly regarded opponent in the second half. Head coach has some splainin to do to the faithful, if there are any left.

  13. ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on September 16, 2012 at 1:12 pm

speaking of shortstops, how clutch was that last night when crawford came to his personal house of horrors and made TWO terrific plays. another measurement of how far he’s come this season, especially for a born minor leaguer (smile to you twin!).

  14. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 16, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Pawlie, Lemaster took a lot of fans ire for being the 8th place hitter (fully deserved as he was often in the .220s or worse) and as SD mentions making the occasional egregious error in the field. So as they announce his name at the Stick and he comes up to the plate come the “boos” of those in attendance. So one he decides on his own….this is what I’m putting on the back of my uni where my name is supposed to be.

  15. eddacker's avatar eddacker said, on September 16, 2012 at 1:50 pm

that ius a great story and I am surprised that I do not remember it. I faintly remember, I listened to a lot of games on the radio then. I certainly remember Lemaster.

Dodgers got Barney (give me back my bullet) Fife going today and he gave up 2 in the first. Hopefully the crummy Cards pen can hang on..better yet Wainwright doesn’t need them or any more runs.
I’d just as soon SF clinches the division ASAP. At this point in the season rest for the regs is more imp than any “meaningful” games down the stretch, imo. Besides if standings wind up the way we think SF will have two home games to start the playoffs, and that should get the players plenty fired up. Given how well SF has played on the road, including runs scored, I don’t fear anyone.

  20. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 16, 2012 at 2:40 pm

Did I just read this on my phone correctly? The fucking pitcher just cleared the bases? If giants pitchers could just get the opposing pitchers out they’d be fine. Was it a rocket?

One other thing I forgot to mention: skip Vogelsong’s next start; which would be this Friday against the Friars and start Penny.

  23. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 16, 2012 at 2:59 pm

The thing about our SP is, the long-guy has a pretty important role this year. In the playoffs, pretty much any of our 5, except Cain, is in danger of imploding before the 5th. Right now, I’d keep all 5 on the playoff roster and use Voggy as the long guy. If they keep the other 4 it’s not like we greatly deepen our bench by getting to add a guy like Huff.
I say, put all 5 on the roster—the more long guys the better for this leaky crew….

Hey Flappers – saw the email traffic on malware/viruses this morn and steered-clear until I saw the “all clear.” Today was my day to do a thread, so thanks to Eric (I think) for putting something up.

On top of the warnings, our laptop took a shit, so I had to go borrow my son’s Mac Notebook and had to jump thru a few hoops to hit our wireless network.

My next thread will be in 10 days, and I will be in Utah (camping doing Zion, Bryce, Escalante, etc.), so unsure what my connectivity will be like. I may need someone to cover my next thread. Will vett that with the other stable boys via email.

Another rough start for Vogey. This is becoming troublesome IMNSHO. We already have the series win…keep winning series and all is good.

Gotta scoot and get some things ready for company coming over in a bit. Will try to check in later. GO GIANTS!
