A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Balance or lack of same

Posted in Uncategorized by willedav on October 13, 2012

OK I love the 2012 version of Giants and their balanced LU.  We get contributions up and down plus off the bench and no longer have to play station to station all the time.  Sure we have an MVP, but there is so much more.  And while I admire the steadiness of posey and the consummate professionalism of Scutaro at the plate, that’s not today’s theme. It’s the unbalanced ones, 3Ps–Pablo Pence Pagan.

Pagan did not have much love from this corner at the start.  His early days at leadoff coupled with some misadventures in the OF did not make for happy times.  After the AS break, tho everything changed. He solidified leadoff and CF position and ran the bases like  a demon.  He says all the right things and brings that latin fire and respect for the game I love.  El Caballo still gets a little Loco at times but I also did the energy he brings, and not just to the leaping end of game celebrations.

Pence is just odd.  Awkward might be an improvement.  From the way he roams around RF to his batting stance to his gyrations in the on deck circle, it is just a trip to watch this guy’s unconventional approach to everything.  But he has tremendous power, hustles his butt off, and gives pre game exhortations that would make any Texas HS football coach proud.

Pablo has been here for years now but some people just can’t adjust to what he is. He’s big…which has zero to do with how well he can hit. Hell he hit .300 last year when nobody else did jack.   He can swing at anything, but is also capable of hitting any pitch he can reach off a wall or over one.  He is great teammate who interacts animatedly with one and all.

So that’s my guys the 3 Ps

You get the good the bad and the ugly in equal parts

But that’s the whole Package

Which ain’t always gonna be Pretty

but sho is Productive

I am watching the Detroit game and it was just the 9th. Valverde is STEAMED. Raul is brilliant. At his age and still contributing. Last year as well. 4-0 and the yankfans were leaving.

Nice (and early) post. You really know your team WD.
no more station to station, that feels so good, by itself, this season.
I like the potential production of the 3Ps as well. Power from Panda and speed with gap hitting from the other two. I am equally pleased with the fielding improvements in our outfield. Defense is so important in the playoffs.

And the ‘never give up the fight’ of this team may prove invaluable as many of the playoff games, so far, have been won off the relievers.
    Go Giants!

Anyone wondering about Affeldt’s injury, here’s a classic Bochy quote.

“He thinks he’ll be back to normal,” Bochy said. “But he still has to go home and cook or something tonight.”

    I love it.

I have been wondering because Jeremy is listed as one of our strengths in the pen. Chi said “not considered to be a problem”. But then you know how those things change.

So reading yesterday’s article by Baggs. Looks like Tim starts off in the bullpen as insurance, if he’s not used in the first three games, he’ll probably get game four.

For some reason, this makes sense to me.

It seems Jeter had been playing with a ‘sore foot’ for a while. And by continuing to play the ‘crack’ or hairline fracture or whatever it was was stressed twice during the game finally becoming a full fracture. Girardi ran out there and helped the trainer carry him off the field while the fans chanted “Derek Jeter”.
And it looks like the yanks will have SP problems for some of the games against the Tigers.

I have to comment on the last part of yesterday’s thread about the Yankees . . . Of course, we have to play them, since (as I said in an earlier post) it would complete 1/2 of our San Francisco revenge tour.* Besides, you always want to play the best and NEVER shy away from challenges. So, if that turns out to be Detroit, so be it – they will have been the best of the AL and we’ll try to punch their ticket back to the “Motor City.” However, for pure epic drama, you want to play the Yankees due to the pomp and circumstance they bring to World Series play.

    * The Oakland A’s being the other half . . . whom we have a rain check for in some future World Series. 🙂

“There are beliefs such as eating your foe, where it will give you his strength or courage. In fact, the word originally meant “strong man” and was used by tribes that believed this. There is a statue in Tarabuco, Bolivia commemorating a victory of the native Quechua people over their Spanish conquerors. The statue shows a Quechua with an Axe Crazy face standing over his defeated Spanish foe. The Spaniard has a gaping hole in his chest and the Quechua is eating his heart. Keep in mind this is a statue fully painted in the town square . . . and was built by the Quechua.

The Iroquois were known for doing this with their more respected (read: worthy of being absorbed) prisoners of war.

In South Africa, it is believed that eating the flesh of human albinos will confer superpowers to the eater.
The superstition is actually far more common a bit northern parts of Africa. Medical science is in somewhat better state in South Africa than in much of the continent. Just to really drive they point home: Yes, this does mean that there are people living in the 21st century Africa who chop up and cannibalize other humans because they believe it will give them magic powers. Not a myth, not some kind of racist blood libel, literal truth. There is a black market for human albino meat!

Kleptocnidae. Hydra got stinging cells with enough poison to stun a little fish. A flatworm eats hydra, assimilates stinging caps without discharge and not digests them, but incorporates as is. Then a predator tries to eat such a flatworm and finds out it hurts a lot. This approach saw a lot of use for stinging cnidarians from hydra to jellyfish and a variety of eaters up to slugs adding more “zap” to their skin or transferring kleptocnidae into their tentacles to use more offensively.

A species of sea slug also exists that gains the ability to photosynthesize from the algae it eats. An article from many decades ago called “Kill Them and Eat Them” suggested that was the way to deal with alien visitors. The killing part was presented as very rational: their very presence will disrupt our society and if they report back to their people then they will invade us. Sounded extreme but sensible. So why eat them? “To gain their power.”

Hey, we can forgo eating the Yankees or another team, ok? However, we gain the mystical and epic mojo the Yankees have acquired by vanquishing them. How cool would that be? Conversely, who gives two shits about beating the Tigers? For me, give me the Yankees every day and twice on Sunday. 🙂

Watching the Nationals’ and Tigers’ closers being left in there to take a non-stop pounding seems really archaic and old-fashioned after watching Bochy go closer-by-committee. Leyland should have had a lefty ready for Ibanez.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on October 14, 2012 at 8:44 am

At least Leyland had enough sense to get Valverde out of there before the game was completely lost, unlike Johnson with Storen.

  10. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 14, 2012 at 8:44 am

I find two things hilarious about the Tigers and Yankees brain trust (Leyland and Girardi). One, Alex Rodriguez, the $275 million man was dropped to sixth in the batting order for the first time since the 2006 playoff finale against Detroit. He is hitting .105 (2 for 19) with no RBIs in the postseason, going hitless in 15 at-bats against right-handed pitchers with 10 strikeouts. A-Rod hasn’t homered in 87 at-bats since Sept. 14. My question to Girardi – why the fuck is he still starting?????????? My question to Alex – How the fuck do you look at yourself in the mirror with a straight face and then cash those gazillion dollar checks?

Second, Tigers closer Jose Valverde has allowed seven runs in three playoff games. Hello . . . Earth to Jim Leyland. Wake up idiot and replace this loser closer already.

  11. eddacker's avatar eddacker said, on October 14, 2012 at 8:46 am

The Cards 25-year-old Lynn allowed left-handed hitters to reach base at a .384 clip. He logged an extraordinary 111-to-11 K:BB versus opposing righties, but issued 53 walks and recorded only 69 strikeouts against lefties in a virtually equal number of plate appearances.

The Giants’ lineup is poised to expose that weakness. Five of San Francisco’s eight non-pitcher starters will bat left-handed, and one of the others, Posey, took Lynn deep at Busch Stadium on Aug. 7.

  15. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 14, 2012 at 9:45 am

Reason 2347 why Bochy is starting Madison Bumgarner . . .

Per ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian, “Madison Bumgarner is an able stand-in for Game 1. Remember how well he pitched in the 2010 postseason, and remember when Cain asked him that year before a start, “Aren’t you nervous?” and Bumgarner said, “I don’t get nervous”? Cardinals fans should be a little nervous about their starting rotation for this series given that it isn’t lined up as nicely as they would like. Lance Lynn, who gave up a walk-off home run to Jayson Werth in relief in Game 4 of the LDS, will start Game 1. After that, it’s unsettled.”

    In Bochy I trust!

Agree Twin….It was a real scary moment for Roberto Kelly getting nailed by a line drive to the back of his head off the bat of Buster Posey.A shaken Posey and the rest of the team were just numb with concern.
Yes he has to be cleared with his concussion, and yes like you I would be extra cautious about his return. But coaches like players are true “Gamers” and im sure he will want to be out there tonight.Adds another story to the pregame show as well I guess.

You know alot of people have tripped on Bumgarner getting this start.I’m sure not one of them. He’s the most rested starter, still a big game pitcher overall, just the logical choice.
The 5 game playoff series always screw up managers options in a perfect scenario.Bochy,Leyland,Giradi,Matheny, surely would not have wanted to use their aces to close out their last rounds, but it’s the playoffs, with some really good balanced matchups all going 5.
Now managers have to adjust with different options to start their 7 game series, with no team going with their “Ace” in the 1st game.Kinda like it actually in the Championship Series, but in the World Series I would like to see the Aces Start the 1st game….Which will be Cain vs Verlander hopefully in a true epic matchup!

  23. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 14, 2012 at 11:04 am

No one has trusted Bochy’s judgement and competence more than I- since he got here, not just since 2010. Which is why it should be obvious that Lincecum is driving the rotation decision. No one hopes more than I do that MadBum turns it around but it’s simple fact that he’s been our worst starter in the stretch drive-one quallty start since August 20. it seems that Bochy is going with Tim as savior but it needs to be pointed out that if he’s needed in that capacity we could likely be in deep shit. It’s almost a concession that rescue efforts will be needed. With that said, Bochy only has one starter he can reasonably expect to excel and Matt can’t pitch everyday, alas. He’s rolling the dice with any of the other 4. This is not even close to the 2010 dynamic when we had 4 starters all pitching lights out in September.

twin said….”And you obviously don’t understand that what we’re told is not neccessarily the facts of the matter.”

I think your deductive reasoning skills need some work. The fact that you were right about Belt being the starter coming out of spring training despite what Bochy was saying at the time has no connection to Timmy ordering Bochy to keep him in the bullpen (despite what Bochy is saying). Everyone knows that what is said publicly isn’t necessarily the truth. But what you’re suggesting doesn’t make any sense. Belt starting coming out of spring training at least made sense regardless of what Bochy was telling us.
If you made an argument for what would be motivating Tim to order Bochy to do this then I would probably be able to just let it slide and not respond. But when you put out such outlandish *opinions* then you can expect to get prodded further on them……

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 14, 2012 at 12:05 pm

I never said Tim ordered it. Distorting what I say doesn’t advance your argument. For a change, why don’t you just ask for my reasoning rather than immediately launching a personal attack?

  29. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 14, 2012 at 12:01 pm

For the edification of some who may not need the edification- Tim is obviously driving the rotation decision-his success in the NLDS and the failures of MadBum and Zits have convinced Bochy that they might need a savior-Mota is hardly that anymore. As I’ve clearly pointed out-it’s a risky strategy driven by the uncertainty about our starting pitchers. Bochy, Sabean, Timmy nor anybody else is going to tell us that. Again-obviously…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 14, 2012 at 12:10 pm

this is what you said: “Which is why it should be obvious that Lincecum is driving the rotation decision.”
Apologies, but when I read that (and I think anyone would read it the same way) it seems you are suggesting that this is Lincecum’s wishes that he is imposing on Bochy.
      Thanks for clarifying.

  30. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 14, 2012 at 12:05 pm

I also think it’s inaccurate to think “Lincecum is driving the rotation decision.” Twin, perhaps what’s more upsetting is the fact that you indicate this is “obvious.” To who? Us? Many here take that as an insult when you say things like that. Almost as if you are saying that we can barely take care of our bodily functions, much less see the reasoning behind Bochy’s pitching rotation decision. I’m trying to be respectful here, but sometimes what you say can be exasperating.

As Flav indicated, I have not read anywhere, in any publication, where “Lincecum is driving the rotation decision.” More typical is this from Sports Illustrated:

“Because both teams had to battle back in the Division Series, the pitching matchup for Game 1 of the NLCS is the product of necessity rather than strategy. The Giants most likely would prefer not to be leading with Madison Bumgarner, who has just one quality start in his last eight turns, while the Cardinals are turning to Lance Lynn only because Jaime Garcia is ineligible for this series after being taken off the Division Series roster mid-series due to an apparent shoulder injury.”

    Thank you for listening. 🙂

I’ve already said what SI did about Bumgarner and the problem Bochy has in deciding on a Game 1 starter. It’s too bad that I have to make a post like my 12:01 to explain what I truly believe to be obvious. In case this last post is also misunderstood, I am not blaming anybody for misunderstanding what I say, or rather attempt to say. I’ll try to be more clear. 3.Sandoval 3B
    4.Posey C
    5.Pence RF
    6.Belt 1B
    7.Blanco LF
    8.Crawford SS
    9.Bumgarner P

And I read that Kelly will sit out at least the first two games. Good decision.

When fucking Descalso and Kozma are beating you it’s time to wave the white flag. Bumgarner has nothing tonight and Bochy made a huge, HUGE mistake starting him.
It’s fine to acknowledge that now that it’s been proven to be true.
But MadBum’s *performance* shouldn’t be overshadowed by another *dead man walking* output from the offense.
These fucking guys have NO EXCUSE for playing like such pussies in their own home park. NONE.

  67. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on October 14, 2012 at 6:34 pm

It seemed like earlier this year, and the second half of last year, Bum was throwing some kind of slider or cut fastball that was boring in on righthanders, in a kind of Randy Johnson-esque way. Whatever happened to that?

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 14, 2012 at 6:38 pm

yes! Where has that gone. Nothing is cutting across the plate anymore, it’s all shit-fastballs and loopy-hit-me curve balls.
Arm still must be tired. Must need the Winter off.
That doesn’t explain why Bochy started him tonight unless he was just *hoping* he’d pitch well.
And is that how we want to go into this series????????????

  69. WilcoJoe's avatar WilcoJoe said, on October 14, 2012 at 6:36 pm

I think this pretty much confirms that Lincecum gets a start…No way they bring him in tonight, this far down…Do you start him tomorrow to ensure he get’s two starts instead of Bum, assuming they make it that far? Lot of pressure on Vogey tomorrow.

And yeah, Craig, really don’t understand why the bats go limp at home. Makes no sense. The players all say how the fans charge them up, etc. Cards have come out swinging, Giants look tentative again. I thought that shit was done for the year.

I don’t care one whit about going down 0-1. Going down 0-2 would piss me off a little but obviously we’d still be fine based on this magical power we call upon once we hit the road.
But I am SICK AND TIRED of this shit at home. There isn’t a single rational reason that we are getting destroyed at home in the playoffs.
