A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The other guy

Posted in Uncategorized by twinfan1 on October 16, 2012

Edd talked about Cain, his counterpart has had a very interesting and unlikely career. Kyle  Lohse was thought he might become the equal of even better than then Twin’s ace, Brad Radke.Never came about.    Then he fell of the map for 5 years, getting nobody out. Now in his 12th year he’s having his best year by far- what was expected of him 10 years ago. And making some nice bucks for it. He’s pitched in the postseason for 3 teams, and 6 years. He’s a strike thrower, 89-92 velocty, a sinker heavy guy who’s developed a decent slider as well. Despite heavy use of the sinker, he has a so-so 40% ground ball rate. We’ll need to do what Krukow preaches: look up. He’s very unlikely to walk guys, being aggressive is how a guy like Lohse is best attacked. With a total of 147 ABs, no current Giant has ever homered against him. Theriot is 12 for 22 with 2 doubles and 2 triples. Pence is .298 in 47 AB but with just 2 RBI. No else has any signiicant history.  If everybody except Panda can lay off the sinkers that begin low in the zone, he pitches to contact and we should make plenty of it…

As I said earlier, should we lose – these are the types of games that really are emotionally draining for the players (and piss me off no end). Great pitching performances wasted, with an inconsistent hitting attack. Give me a wipe out any day vs. this “coulda, shoulda, woulda” cluster fuck fiasco.

Our backs are (again) against the wall if we lose this game.

I’m not too discouraged by this loss. If they had lost 2-1 on a walk-off perhaps…but I’m encouraged Cain pitched well, they didn’t use the pen too much and they showed they can hit Lohse. Get a win tomorrow behind Lincecum and things look fine with 6 and 7 back at ATT with Vogel/Cain.

Motte is sick. All of their relievers are. They all throw high 90’s and they all have location.
Can someone tell me how this team has only won 90 and 88 games the last 2 years? Who’s keeping them down in this decent but not dominant place in the NL Central?

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 17, 2012 at 7:57 pm

If these teams played 100 best of 7’s the Giants would win 80 or more of them. Same thing with the 2002 Giants v angels. What worries is that they only play 1. Let’s hope the 3rd inning only changed the dynamic of this game and not the series.

  18. Wilcojoe's avatar Wilcojoe said, on October 17, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Any update on Beltran? Kruk had a nice quip after he left the game, “as we know, if he’s not 100%, he’s not likely to play.”

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:11 pm

interesting, I thought he was a Beltran-backer. I’ve heard him jizz about the guy, even recently. You sure you heard that quote right? I’m not questioning your integrity on the reported quote, just wondering if you heard it correctly. Joe, you will always be my MAIN man on the scene in Texas.

Me? I would rather have Zito pitch tomorrow and Timmie the next game.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:23 pm

That’s a tough one, but I think I’m with you. If #5 is do or die, I’d rather have Tim start. Plus, he’s less rested than Zito, so I guess Bochy figures he wants to get one right now, and not have the pressure of a #5 do or die. I supposed if #5 is do or die, Zito will start, but essentially the whole staff is in the Pen ready to go with an ultra short choke chain on the Zitman…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Essentially that was my thinking in why I want Zito to go – Timmy is the line in the sand, if Zito fucks up. That coupled with the fact that I wonder if Tim is truly rested after throwing the 2 innings in the first game. I just feel uncomfortable bringing him in tomorrow.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:30 pm

I hear ya. The whole rotation order this series just sort of has seemed to me discombobulated and jumbled and on the fly. Not the way I would have dialed it up. Cain was good today, though. Wasn’t a pitching problem, that’s for sure…

  20. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Beltran’s availability doesn’t concern me. Look what happened with the TWO RF’s who replaced him. They accounted for all the Cardinal runs.
We had a fantastic man-child pitching performance tonight from Cainer and Beltran left the game early. So why did we lose?
We all saw it, it’s nothing shocking or even anything to stew over. We hit the ball and got on base we just didn’t do it at the right time. That’s it. And that’s just baseball.
Had Beltran not gotten hurt we might have won 1-0.
Trip on that and it might keep some of you off the ledge tonight……..
Go get ’em tomorrow, it’s one day at a time in this game……..

  21. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:16 pm

Fat chance Bochy will sit Pence. But, at minimum, I’d move him down the LU and move Belt up, or put Craw in the #2 hole where he’s done well before, and he’s got his hitting eye going some now anyway, and put Scutaro at #5 behind Posey. Posey’s getting shit to hit because of Pence, that has to be rectified, pronto. I’d put Arias somewhere, somehow at some point tomorrow, he got a coupla doubles the last game he played, and then Bochy’s deep sixed him…

  22. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:16 pm

I’d think Hector catches. Would you guys use Belt in LF, Blanco in RF ? Or sit Belt and Pence? Or just Belt sits? Just Pence? You’ve all changed my mind about Pence for tomorrow, I’d start Nady for Pence. Belt sits but enters in the 6th and preserves the win by scooping an errant thow while being 14 feet off the bag. The ump blows the call and Holliday has a coronary disputing it. Sadly, he passes away en route to the hospital when a red light runner begins his braking late. Police determine it was a good, clean homicide…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:19 pm

I’d sit Pence over Belt, and Belt can play LF. Pence is either striking out or hitting dribblers. I can’t remember the last time he hit a rope somewhere. Belt at least could take a walk, Pence would sooner take one off the forehead than take a base on balls…

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:49 pm

Well, my real preference for Buster to catch and Belt to stay at first. I just don’t see that happening and I sure like Blanco’s defense in LF. I also think that there is always an huge overreaction when we don’t hit- hell, even a guy who *has* hit is getting flak for not hitting. But I can ilve with just Nady in RF as the only change, or Blanco in RF, Belt in left. I can also live with no change ar all- it’s been their best all around LU. I’m easy.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:31 pm

Yeah Mike, I want Belt in the lineup, if only because he has an idea of what a ball and a strike looks like (fucked up umpiring notwithstanding. Ha.). Pence sits for a game. Ironically, a really good hitter – Molina is doing almost as bad as Pence, but he is a much better hitter (he has an idea of what he’s doing too) and there is no way, no how, the Cards will sit him.

I’d start Nady. Belt off the bench (this if Hector starts behind the dish – and Buster is at 1st).

Would love to see Arias…even in a fucking PH role.

Craig nailed it at 8:04. Our boys hit, hit often, got on base with like 5 BB, but just could not get that ever illusive “timely hit with RISP.”

I remember that. Poor old Wilbur drove drunk into the Tidal Basin or some such with her, didn’t he? And, that’s how they found out about her. Those were the good old days when politicians screwed hookers half the time, not us ALL the time. And, they actually worked with each other to get shit done. Now we have drones like Vitters out of Louisiana that spout high school abstinence and no birth control while shagging hookers right and left in Georgetown, then make their wives stand next to them at the press conference begging forgiveness from her, his constituents and God…

Like most if not all here, I’m down on Pence. That double play was a killer, and the best that can be said of his K in the 7th is that it wasn’t a double play.

But, it gets tricky on whether a manager should sit a middle-of-the-order guy who’s slumping in the playoffs. Girardi tried it last night by benching A-Rod and Swisher, and that didn’t work either. How much rope do you give Pence before enough’s enough? That’s now eight playoff games without a ribbie. Maybe if not bench him, at least move him down in the order, because when they pitch around Posey with 2 outs and no one on in the middle of a 1-run game, that’s not a good thing.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:43 pm

excellent. I’m glad someone I respect (you) posted something in the same ballpark as I just did. I actually WOULDN’T move him down in the order because I don’t see anyone below who is ready to step into that role right now.
Plus. Buster is hitting like a girl lately and they seem hell bent on walking him to get to Pence so….
that’s turning out to just be a free base runner, why fuck that up? 🙂
Pence is one of our rocks. You roll with your rocks till you can’t roll anymore.
How has Girardi’s *benchings* been going, by the way? (that’s not directed at you Mac just anyone who’s paying attention to the Yankees right now).

      • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:47 pm

He had Granderson along with A-Rod out of tonight’s lineup and Swisher back in, but of course it got rained out. Although from what I’ve heard, they’re still waiting for the rain to arrive in Detroit. Nice call, Bud.

  26. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:38 pm

There’s no reason to sit Pence. He hit a rocket in the 2nd inning, by the way…
He’s established himself as a team leader, this is the time to lead the team. If he fails, or the team does, those are the breaks.
You don’t trash the entire operation by having Nady take over for a game……..

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Well, I predict there’s a snowball’s chance Bochy will bench Pence for a game for the above reasons you guys espouse. But, he should be dropped down the LU to protect Posey. If Pence can’t figure that out or handle it, tough shit, that’s the major leagues, and the idea is to win these games. I’m not saying play Arias instead of Pence and move players around accordingly, but does anybody here think Arias would not have 5 LOB today if he had the chances Pence had? I think Arias gets at least one of those runners home…

  27. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:42 pm

I’d make a big effort to sign Pagan. There is nobody else in the org that has his leadoff ability with speed and some pop. And, his fielding has gotten better as he’s become accustomed to ATT. He apparently is good in the clubhouse as one of the Latin leaders. If pushed, give him 3 + 1 at $8M per or so. They can’t count onGary Brown being anywhere near as good as Pagan, or even serviceable at the MLB level. Brown is a total nothing and mystery IMO, without some exposure to MLB competition to gauge his talent.
Blanco — keep him at the “slave wage” per Oracle for next year. He’s a cog in the wheel.
Theriot — depends on ST performance, and if there’s anything better out there. Probably not, so probably keep him around as utility guy. He’s a pretty good AB every time out, serviceable back up defensively at 2B and spot SS in a pinch.
Pence — they have to keep him for 2013. Sign him to a one year deal or go arb with him. He’s got pop, in between streaks of nothing. No multi year deal. See how Brown develops and then off season 2013 pull Pence’s plug or sign him to extension. Plus, Sabes will look like an ass if they let Pence go after giving up Joseph and Nate for him…

  28. wswin's avatar wswin said, on October 17, 2012 at 8:48 pm

remember when Pence was aquired he was the 6th hitter, and Panda was the 5. I think they both should go back to that. Crawford 2nd, Scutaro 3rd, Blanco 8th. Length fellas length.

No thread for today yet, so will post this here, and then copy over to today’s thread.

I am with Craig’s post last night around 8:04. Not freaking out. This team hit their starter, they were patient (drew, I beleive 5 BBs), but just could not get the key hits (0-7 w/RISP). Their timing sucked. In every other aspect of the game, the Giants won.

So, new day today. With that said, I know that “mathmatically” today is NOT an elimination game. But realistically, it is as close as you can get. I do not want us going into game 5 with Zito on the bump, and that game being a MUST win. The G-Men would then have to win 3 in a row, and while we did that IN Cincy, I’m not sure they can fish that one out of their bag of tricks, again.

A win today ensures the series comes back to SF, with the prospects of Vogel-TRON and Cainer in the games at our yard.

One Day, One Game at a Time.
