A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The other guy

Posted in Uncategorized by twinfan1 on October 16, 2012

Edd talked about Cain, his counterpart has had a very interesting and unlikely career. Kyle  Lohse was thought he might become the equal of even better than then Twin’s ace, Brad Radke.Never came about.    Then he fell of the map for 5 years, getting nobody out. Now in his 12th year he’s having his best year by far- what was expected of him 10 years ago. And making some nice bucks for it. He’s pitched in the postseason for 3 teams, and 6 years. He’s a strike thrower, 89-92 velocty, a sinker heavy guy who’s developed a decent slider as well. Despite heavy use of the sinker, he has a so-so 40% ground ball rate. We’ll need to do what Krukow preaches: look up. He’s very unlikely to walk guys, being aggressive is how a guy like Lohse is best attacked. With a total of 147 ABs, no current Giant has ever homered against him. Theriot is 12 for 22 with 2 doubles and 2 triples. Pence is .298 in 47 AB but with just 2 RBI. No else has any signiicant history.  If everybody except Panda can lay off the sinkers that begin low in the zone, he pitches to contact and we should make plenty of it…

Well, Pence had no shot with those sliders, and Belt had the good eye and should have gone to 3-2 except for the umpire. I can’t fault Belt for not swinging there. This game looks like one of those that might get away. 11 men LOB so far, that’s not good. Seriously, Pence has to sit tomorrow. Nady in. But, I’d be shocked if that happens. Then again, WTF even have guys on the bench if not for something like that?…

    OK-
Pence is arb eligible, is a FA after 2013, is making 10 million 4 now, is 29 YO
Pagan is FA after this year, is making 4.85 million, is 30 YO
Scutaro is also a FA after this year, is making 6 miilion, is 36 YO
Blanco and Arias are both under our control and not arb eligible yet. Arias is 27, Blanco 28. Each is making about 500 K. Arias, BTW, is a plus defender at third, very subpar atv SS and second.
Theriot is a FA after this year, is making 1,250, 000, is 32

What would you do with each?

    • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on October 17, 2012 at 5:46 pm

i’d take a long look at pagan and pence. nothing more than 2 years. scoots i would wait on and see if he falls back. one year max. theriot i look at signing, but probably one year.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 17, 2012 at 5:55 pm

Ewisco, are you a GM intern with the A’s or Rockies? Pagan and Pence will laugh at “2 years” IMO.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 17, 2012 at 5:48 pm

Pence’s playoffs are very important insofar as whether I would keep him or shit can him after his contract ends (i.e., trade him). I think we have definitely seen the last of his .280 plus years, much less frickin’ .300. You would be dreaming if you think he will ever approach that batting average again. Similarly, I think 100 RBIs is no longer within his reach.

Pagan can back up the Brinks truck wherever he goes . . . I would definitely give him $9 million per year for 4 years and an option. As has been pointed out at the blog previously, he can and probably will get more than that based on his regular season and playoffs. If so, we might have to sweeten the pot.

Definitely resign Arias and Blanco. Cheap insurance and who knows? One or both may bloom, whereby they are starting regularly. Keep Theriot as a utility and see if Stephen Drew is available.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 17, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Forgot about Scutaro . . . Two year contract at $7-8 million, with a Giants option for a third year. Frankly, if you don’t offer him something enticing reflecting what he has done for this team – THEN HE WILL BE GONE.

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on October 17, 2012 at 6:05 pm

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on October 17, 2012 at 6:08 pm

no way i give pagan 4 years. 3 at best. maybe, maybe 3 and an option.

I say that however, without thinking about what is in the minors.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 17, 2012 at 7:58 pm

I wouldn’t give Pagan more than 2 years either, and I’d be fine with him leaving. I think he’s a guy who needs a lot of motivation and a 4 year deal would kill that.
No WAY I sign Pagan to what his market value is……

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 17, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Remember this conversation, because I would bet whatever you want – that some team will give him 4 years guaranteed.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 17, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Go to arbirtation with Pence. With his year, I doubt he wins his number

I try like hell to sign Pagan. 2 years with a club option. Not sure what the market will be…but he’ll probably be sniffing in the 10 mil/year range.

Scutaro has said he wants to come back. I say 2 years, and an option year (low buyout).

Theriot might be a good signing for a utility guy if they can get him on the cheap for a year.

Blanco, Posey, Casilla, Romo and Wilson are all also arb eligible.

Cabrera will be a FA, but Giants will have exclusive negotiating rights to him for (2 weeks?). That is why he is on the 40 man.

Giants have about 80 mil committed to salaries for next year. If their ceiling remains the same, that means you have about 50 mil to work with.

  59. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 17, 2012 at 5:34 pm

Let’s hope this fucking rain delay wakes up our sleeping Giants! Being down by two is not the worst of it…it is how they got there…out hitting them 9-6 with 5 BB, but the killer…11 LOB (as opposed to 2 for the fucking gay birds).

  60. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 17, 2012 at 5:35 pm

It seems that we are mostly agreed that Pence needs to do some penance on the bench for the next game. Some way, some how, I want to see more of Arias in this series. No idea how that’s doable with Panda seemingly on the cusp of doing something great (2 for 4, RBI in this game). Giants overall hitting in the postseason is pathetic (.217 . . . this game not included). Especially so with RISP. This game alone – as has been pointed out – eleven. Only 2 for the Cards. Also, two stolen bases? I know that Molina is excellent, but we need to run more when given the opportunity. By the by, Pence and Belt stole the two bases.

  61. ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on October 17, 2012 at 5:38 pm

in watching Pence’s AB’s again, he’s not so much collapsing his back side as jumping at pitches which gets him on his front side too quick. either way, he needs a break. he will be critical to winning this series and the WS.

  62. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 17, 2012 at 5:39 pm

Blanco and Arias are staying. Pence is a big question. For all the runs he drives in, he sure leaves a lot out there as well. He’s got to get a better approach. He isn’t Pablo. Pablo can hit .300+ playing how he does. pence looks like .260 is his high water mark. Keep Pagan?

Trade Pence for Castro, keep Theriot. Lose Scoots.

    I dunno.

I probably shoud have been clearer about the status of Blanco and Arias. They’re ours for next year and are not even arb eligible then.. Probably the decision with each is whether the front office thinks them valuable enough to buy out their arb years. As we know, this is still a business so my guess is they’ll both work for those 500 grand slave wages next year and then a desicion will be made on them.
Melky really screwed things up. If they don’t offer arb to Pence and Pagan signs elsewhere the OFers by default become Nady, Blanco, Peguero or Brown. That’s not thrilling..

    • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on October 17, 2012 at 6:45 pm

i caught their status. and who knows what the front is going to do about that. but for the ones that CAN be signed, i really like this new focus on 2, 3 years max. but that was bow-tie and now he’s gone.

At the end of the day though, the minors are pretty shallow on next year or even the year after depth. It would be especially nice if we can just win the WS and bask for a year.
