A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

So Dennis Z., a denizen of this e-den, emails me at 2:35pm Oct 16: “Paulie, I’m going to Finnerty’s for tomorrow’s afternoon game… to be with that Bay Area mood crowd will heighten my screaming!” And sis-boom-bah just like that I drive 3-plus hours to his beautiful house in the hills 70 miles from New York and we drive to Finnerty’s to watch Game 3 of the 2012 NLCS.

http://finnertysnyc.com/

I first heard about Finnerty’s during the World Series 2010 trophy tour. I met Dennis when the trophy came to Cooperstown, on May 7, 2011.

We had a grand time yesterday, driving through flickering sunlight, spying the Manhattan skyline in the distance like Oz as seen from Nutley, New Jersey, and cheering, clapping, and chanting in an exuberant sea of black and orange partisans, expatriates from a Left Coast nation.

But we lost. Which dampened my spirits like so much rain pelting the tarps covering the infield.

After a 3hr 28min rain delay, Dennis and I headed back into exurbia and the hinterland of our anxious hope, only to catch the last Sandovalian out, not even a whimper, in his living room.

I don’t know where to go with all this since details will be kept minimal with the hope this experience will become a full-fledged chapter in a forthcoming Giants’ fandom book.

I’ll pose some questions, if I may approach the bench, your honors:

— Where did you watch the game or listen to it?

— If you can’t watch at home or at the real game in person, where do you watch?

— Are all Giants fans as young as those we saw as Finnerty’s?

— Are Giants fans in NYC all that *hot* especially the Asian gals?

— What do with do with Pence (whose ABs elicited screams Reverend, Preacher Man, and other signifiers, but not with the result of any screaming single, double, triples, homers, or even outs)?

— Why did we not get a big bomb from SOMEONE?

— Mr. Belt, how could you TAKE that called third-strike pitch?

— What now, my loves?

I’m encouraged Giants SPs have held down the Cards since game 1, and the pen has been pretty good. If we get more outings like yesterday and day before from Lincecum and Z, we go home with the lead. And I would trust cards pen comes unglued and coughs up a game at some point in the series.

So, reading yesterday’s posts, this seems to be the gist of it all: “Fuck, shit, piss, Pence.” “Fuck, shit, piss, Pence.” “Fuck, shit, piss, Pence.” Does that about sum it up? Geez, you’se guys are going to give yourselves heart attacks, hanging on every at-bat like that….. Still not worried, that was an odd game, in many ways. Almost like a non-game. Kind of like the Cincy games in SF. Game 4 must turn it around, and I’m guessing it will and on we go…

  3. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 18, 2012 at 7:38 am

Sounds like a kick ass time Pawlie, sans the loss.

I am with Craig’s post last night around 8:04. Not freaking out. This team hit their starter, they were patient (drew, I believe 5 BBs), but just could not get the key hits (0-7 w/RISP). Their timing sucked. In every other aspect of the game, the Giants won.

So, new day today. With that said, I know that “mathmatically” today is NOT an elimination game. But realistically, it is as close as you can get. I do not want us going into game 5 with Zito on the bump, and THAT game being a MUST win. The G-Men would then have to win 3 in a row, and while we did that IN Cincy, I’m not sure they can fish something of that magnitude out of their bag of tricks, again.

A win today ensures the series comes back to SF with Vogel-TRON on the bump Sunday, and possibly Cainer in game seven, if required.

One Day, One Game at a Time.

    Now to your questions:

I watched the game at home. If I am not going to the game, it is usually at home, at a friend’s house, or at my local watering hole (Placerville Brewing Company).

Cannot speak to hot Asian girls in NYC (never been there) who are Giants fans, but I dig ladies who are Giants fans, and I dig Asian chicks.

Pence? Nady gets the start today.

Why did we not get a big bomb from SOMEONE? (I refer again to Flavor’s post from 8:04 last night).

In the words of Roger Craig. Don’t Get Your Dauber Down. Let’s kick the living shit out of the Fucking Fuck Redbirds today!

Pawlie and DennisZ– great to hear you guys taking in the game together. I was forced to have to listen to it holed up in my office doing, uh, *paperwork* until the rain delay. Then I went home, did a bunch of daily domestic shit, and caught the last 2 uninspiring innings…..
I feel the same way I did last night: This isn’t the time to be shuffling the LU around. Look, you can make the argument that the Giants have outplayed the Cardinals for the last 2.5 games of the 3 total.
However, my hatred of the Cardinals grow-eth. I hate watching them celebrate. I hate their dumb beards. I hate Buck and the obvious stiffy he has for St Louis. I hate their fans and those 2 faggety birds perched so delicately on that bat. I hate the fact that my favorite college football team is spelled with 90% of the same letters it takes to spell out C-A-R-D-I-N-A-L-S. Makes me miss *Indians* more than ever……
By the way, you do know that the very mention of those hot asian babes has Ted scouring priceline for a cheap red eye to investigate this claim in person, right?

Your best hitter should be batting 3rd,and that’s Buster Posey!
He gets no protection right now,Cards are just gonna pitch around him.Know this guy is not your classic #4 but Scutaro is their best option behind Posey right now,he’s a great FB hitter with clutch AB’s that your not getting from Panda and especially Pence.

  6. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 18, 2012 at 8:20 am

I agree, Kat. And Flavor, I would typically agree with LU changes, timing of, etc., but in this instance I would move Posey to the 3 and put Pablo in the clean-up, and them put Nady in for Pence (possibly moving Belt to the 5-hole and putting Nady batting 6th).

  7. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 18, 2012 at 8:25 am

Can’t see Scoots in the clean-up. Again, I would flip Posey/Sandoval. Pable is hitting .294 in the post-season…he is the least of the problems with the 3-4-5 guys.

Paulie’s telling a tall tail…. He treated me as his chauffeur (made me wear a chauffeur’s cap!) to the bar and while there he trolled around selling his book throughout the bar.
ahhhh… you know that isn’t true… It was fun hanging with the guy and cheering on (kind of infrequently) .
But being from the east coast in Yankee/Mets country, we had an appreciation for the level of love for this team as we wallowed in a flood of black and orange last night…….

I live in a small fishing village of about 200, In the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I’m about 20 – 40 miles from anything. Since I tend to drink heavily at a bar, the wife and I will usually get a room if it’s a night of drinking. Because a cab has to do a complete dead head back, they would probably cost me about $100. My two favorite bars here for watching sports are, The Lucky Twelve Tavern in Nags Head (good pizza, strong drinks and many TVs) the other is Stripers bar and grill in Manteo (on Roanoke Island). As it is I’ve been watching the POs at home (if we had played the Nats, I would have been in DC for the games). The funny thing is and maybe an indication of the intensity of the games, I’ve been standing while watching the games. Either right in front of the TV or on the front porch with the curtain open while I have a smoke. A lot of pacing and shouting has gone on and our animals now know I’m out of mind (since I feed them, they put up with it). The wife usually goes off and does something else while I’m watching but checks in from time to time with a Let’s Go Giants chant.

When I lived in SF I had season tickets, so I would have been at the home games. The away games I probably would have watched at the Connecticut Yankee which was just three blocks from where I lived and easy to stumble home from (although, the bartender and one of the waitresses have given me a ride once or twice).

The Giants line up that I’d like to see tonight is Posey catching (suck it up Tim), Pense hitting Third and Panda batting behind Buster.

  10. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 18, 2012 at 9:18 am

Well, as I said last night ater getting over the disappoinment of the loss, our best LU is the one that started last night. I think it’s a given that Hector will catch and Posey will be at first. I find i very disconcerting that Posey speaks of Timmy by noting what he’s *heard* about Tim pitching with better confidence. Our best catcher should be catching tonight and our best first baseman playing first base, and yep-our best RFer playng RF.
Now- what about protecting Posey or making the Cards pay for walking him? For my money that would be batting Buster 3, Panda 4, Pence 5 as he’s been. Look, we have to face the fact that nobody has hit well in the entire postseason- no one. So while conceding that theyll catch Hector and play Posey at first, I go with the best players everywhere else. Is Nady better than Pence? It is to laugh….as a side note, while I don’t like Posey not catching, this is a huge game that probably will have more to do with how Tim pitches than anything else, so if he’s more comfy with Hector this isn’t time to change.
So my LU, facing the probability of Hector catching:
    Pagan
    Scutaro
    Posey
    Sandoval
    Pence
Blanco ( Just as “The Book” suggests, I want a couple of guys, the pitcher not being one of them, behind a base stealing threat)
    Sanchez
    Crawford

Buck? Why do I think of the despicable Hannity when Buck is on? Are they really the same guy? I don’t rule it out…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 18, 2012 at 9:47 am

Michael – I can see your point on having the best on the field (sans Posey behind the dish – and that means Pence in the line-up), and I also suggested earlier today moving Posey to the 3 hole and Panda to clean-up. I had Belt 5 (but that was before I realized that Hector probably gets the nod behind the dish).

John – no way I see Pence in the 3 hole. That spot should be your best hitter, and slumps being damned…our best is Posey. So for me, if Pence indeed is to start, I like Michael’s line-up.

  11. Salty's avatar Salty said, on October 18, 2012 at 9:57 am

Agree with Michael’s lineup, too, if Hector is catching. I also agree leave Belt at 1b. His defense is just too good.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 18, 2012 at 9:59 am

And take Posey out of the line-up? I just don’t see that.

      • Salty's avatar Salty said, on October 18, 2012 at 10:03 am

No no no…Buster catches, Tim will have to get over it.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 18, 2012 at 11:13 am

That is what I would prefer, Salt, but it probably won’t happen. My guess is that for whatever the fucking reason, Tim is more comfortable with Hector. At this stage…(a near must-win game), I prefer to have Tim comfortable. But, IMNSHO, this is something that needs to be addressed.

  12. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 18, 2012 at 9:59 am

On locations to watch – for the clinching game in 2010 I was at Placerville Brewing with a bunch of good friends, my daughter, and my girlfriend. It was the next-best thing to actually being at the game. I would have loved to been one of the two dudes in the complete orange suits at the 2010 clinching game 5. If you see any of the pictures or video from that game (Renteria’s blast, etc.) they were sitting right behind home plate. That would have been awesome!

  13. Salty's avatar Salty said, on October 18, 2012 at 10:04 am

I usually watch at home because I well, I can get loud. Sometimes embarrassingly loud. Neighbors with young children have complained. Watching at a bar is fun but I don’t drink enough for 9 innings, and I feel I have to keep the kid on and that’s frustrating. Strange. I’m normally pretty reserved and laid back. But when it comes to the Giants, my competitive spirit gets unduly awakened. Reading the flap keeps me from going off and yakking too much, which the girlfriend appreciates. She usually tells me to pipe down and stop SCARING the CAT , who hides in the closet anyway when I’m around.

  14. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on October 18, 2012 at 10:15 am

Well, there’s no way Belt gets to stay at first unless Buster catches. I have my dime store theories about why Buster isn’t catching Tim but those and all others are just not important now, IMO. As I posted earlier, and I’m sure many concur, Tim pitching well tonight is priority one, dealing with possible rifts between and Posey and one or two of our pitchers should be an off season thing to deal with. Again, IMO.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 18, 2012 at 11:15 am

Agree whole-heartedly (and I replied in kind to Salt’s post earlier). Tim needs to be comfortable…this is as close to a “must-win” as there is (without it ACTUALLY being an elimination game).

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 18, 2012 at 10:21 am

I work at home, as does my wife, so I usually watch at home as well. We’ve been to 5 games this year. No mean feat since we are 100 miles away. So, it’s my wife, my son, and the occasional roup of friends that’ll stop by for game time. My daughters go to a ton of games as they have lots of friends with tickets, and they score cheapies on stub hub all the time. They are now going to Momo’s to hang out during the playoff games.

Greatest moment so far was celebrating the Cincy clinching. Had a nice shot of whiskey and cracked open a bottle of champagne to honor the boys in black and orange. Lats night’s game was a pisser, but the biggest problem I saw was the obvious pitching around Posey. I said yesterday that just flipping Posey and Panda would help some. Panda’s a bad-ball hitter, and might be able to generate offense from waste pitches. Pence? My knee-jerk reaction was to sit him. But I can be cajoled into keeping him in. Again though, flipping him and Belt might be in order.

A couple of quotes following the win in SF that I thought were kinda cool –

“Haylee and I moved out of our rental in Walnut Creek and now are staying in a hotel in San Francisco. I walked to the park for the first two games and it was like there was a carnival in town. It felt a little like going to a college football game. Everybody’s in orange-and-black. There’s an excitement in the air. I’m kind of recognizable because I’m pretty tall, but I walked with my hood up and tried to blend in so I could just enjoy the atmosphere. (The only disappointment was no fly-over before the game. I love the fly-overs.)” – Brandon Belt from his 10/16 Blog.

“One of my favorite moments of last night’s game was watching Aubrey Huff score from second base on Theriot’s single in the sixth. He looked like he was running with a trailer hitched to his back. We all give him a hard time about his speed. When he got to the dugout and everybody was high-fiving him, I took the opportunity to give him a turkey tap, which he didn’t like too much. (I’m not describing what a turkey tap is but you can google it.)” Belt, again from his blog.

“One of the things that always makes me smile during our games is looking into the dugout when I get on base – or when anybody gets on base. You see our guys going crazy – Wilson, Lincecum, Hensley, Huff, Theriot, Romo, all of them. It reminds me that this is still a fun game and not just a business. Even in the playoffs, everyone on this team is having fun like it’s spring training.” – Gregor Blanco from his blog on 10/15

“We’ll see you Sunday, right? I don’t expect we’ll sweep in St. Louis. And we’d rather win the championship here, in front of our amazing fans.
Keep sending us good luck!” Blanco from the same blog post.

Good Luck Giants, now go out and turkey tap those Cardinal’s balls.

  21. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 18, 2012 at 11:23 am

Yeah – I suspect it is Hector. Should be Buster behind the dish. This is definitely something that needs to be addressed in the off-season. Bochy, Buster, whoever needs to give Tim a fucking Turkey Tap and let him know how the shit is going to work going forward.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 18, 2012 at 11:46 am

I completely get what you are saying, but if this is what it takes (Hector behind the dish) to make Tim MOST COMFORTABLE (Maximize his chances to pitch his BEST GAME), then I say roll with it for now, and address it AFTER the season. I think it is more important to do everything you can to have Tim on his A game.

    Good afternoon,

I’d move Posey to the three hole, Pablo down to four and give Pence another shot at five just to see if they can shake up the Cards pitching. As for Tim McCarver deriding Bochy for having Cain bunt with men on first and third I found this little nugget:

    Henry Schulman ‏@hankschulman
Hilarious to me that all I’ve heard for years is derision for Tim McCarver. Now all of a sudden he’s an oracle. He doesn’t know this team.

As for where I watch the games usually here at home unless I’m at the Mojo Lounge in the East Bay. 17 HD TV’s, 32 different drafts and the Lady Bartenders know how to take care of the customers.

First off, yes Posey should be like Barry Bonds, bat him 3rd. Next the Posey and Timmy debacle. well my take is Bochy should have addressed this before the post season, like say back in July. He should have sat Timmy and Buster down and said “do you two want to win another championship”? If the answer was yes then Bochy should have explained the reasons to have Buster be the Catcher. Done, my example of how this did work is Koby and Shaq. For two years and more than two coaches these two could not stand each other. So then Phil Jackson comes in, and low and behold all of a sudden Kobe and Shaq were winning Championships. If wasn’t because Phil was a better coach, it was because Phil got them to play nice together. He had to explain to Kobe that Shaq was the President and Kobe was going to have to be the VP if they wanted to win Championships. Unfortunately for the Giants it is now the playoffs and it is too late to get Timmy on the same page as the rest of the team.

I don’t think it’s completely un-doable. When he’s come out of the pen, he’s pitched to whoever was catching (Buster), and been successful. Point that out, tell him that it’s not just about pitching, but scoring some runs & bring him into the fold. Does anyone know why this happened? Was it just because Timmeh was struggling and decided he needed a change or was there some sort of falling out?

Well, yeah, AK. Protecting Posey was the biggest move to make. And no, I don;t like the Hector 5th deal either. Better than Pence I suppose, but Hector is another free-swinger that doesn’t need to be thrown strikes to get out.

I like the LU change both for the substance of it and that it doesn’t make anyone feel demoted. Well, except for Belt, of course. But he knows the deal by now- and he could still have an impact on the game.

So no shit, there I was turning and burning at 25,000 ft above the Grapevine. Returning home in time to catch the game(s). When there’s a LOUD bang at the back of the plane and the sound of an engine spinning down. So now I’m at the bar at LAX hoping to catch a 6:00 flt to SF and cheat death again. Sadly, car in Oakland.

    • James's avatar James said, on October 18, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Now, specifically on Pence, Bochy said, “If you have a player who’s frozen, now swinging, taking pitches, who’s in-between, that’s when you’re concerned. All I want is that guys get their swings off. It may not go well, but if you’re going to go down, go down swinging.”

Bruce didn’t want to watch the vacillating, unmanly Belt take third strikes, that’s why.

  75. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 18, 2012 at 6:43 pm

Tim gave up the hits, but Hector has to make that play. Posey makes the catch and tag, even with his matador defense. That’s what you give up with Hector, and that bit us in the ass…
