A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

One Day, One Game…To Play Another Day…

Posted in Uncategorized by chipower9 on October 22, 2012

I am going to try to keep this short, but it is difficult to focus, what with all the thoughts and emotions that have encompassed this joyous ride. Anyway, here goes…

First a couple of tidbits. I was listening to KNBR on my drive this morning (which I ALWAYS do, unless I am on the led sled). There were a couple of things I found really interesting.

First, to date, for this NLCS series, the Giants have had either NLCS or WS MVPs throw out the first pitch.

Will “The Thrill” For Game 1.

Benito “Benny” Santiago for Game 2.

For Game 6 yesterday, Jeffery “The Hack Man” Leonard was the man.

That leaves only ONE. And the mention was could it be Cody Ross? Just the talk about these first pitches, etc., gave me chills and goose bumps. So, would Ross throw out today’s pitch? Would he be welcome? I yelled to no one in particular (as I was driving alone), HELL YES! (And next year? Ross a Giant?? Well, that’s a different topic for a different day, because it is NOT YET time to fire up the Hot Stove.)

But I want to rewind and discuss The Hack Man. There was mention this morning too about an instance between Roger “THE Humm Baby” Craig (while manager of our Giants) and Hack Man. The story goes that Leonard showed up one day (not sure this was in the club house, dugout, etc.) with his hat on backwards. Craig politely told him to turn his hat around. There were supposedly some long stares, etc. but eventually Leonard turned the hat around because he had “huge respect for the man.” Anyway, I just thought that was a really cool story, and was another instance where I got the chills and goose bumps.

So here we are. GAME SEVEN, Flappers!

Seriously, it took FIVE elimination games to get here. Who woulda thunk it?

Game 3 – NLDS. San Francisco Giants 2, Cincinnati Reds 1. WP – Sergio Romo.
Game 4 – NLDS. San Francisco Giants 8, Cincinnati Reds 3. WP – Tim Lincecum.
Game 5 – NLDS. San Francisco Giants 6, Cincinnati Reds 4. WP – Matt Cain.
Game 5 – NLCS. San Francisco Giants 5, St Louis Cardinals 0. WP – Barry Zito.
Game 6 – NLCS. San Francisco Giants 6, St Louis Cardinals 1. WP – Ryan Vogelsong.
Game 7 – NLCS. San Francisco Giants starter: Matt Cain. Let’s GET IT ON!

One Day, One Game…To Play Another Day!

When the season started, the Giants were favorites.
And then, Wilson got injured, Lincecum, 2 time Cy Young award winner, was asking Zito for advice and still ended up as probably the worst pitcher in MLB, Melky turned out to be a cheater, Sandoval, though playing well, was injured twice and had a helluva time catching up, Crawdad starting the season having about 8 errors a game….
This season had every indication of exploding *AND* imploding.
They shouldn’t have made it to the World Series. They wouldn’t make it to the world series. They *couldn’t* make it to the World Series. And yet–they made it to the 2012 World Series. And now everyone’s asking the same question they asked in 2010:

Dawg: it would not be Zito 1-4-7. And that’s not a critizism of Zito, it’s simple–there is no way on God’s brown earth that they’re pitching Zito twice on three days rest. I do think he’ll get game 1. Having this series go 7 does screw it up in that Vogelsong or Cain can only get one start unless Bochy pitched one of them on short rest.
i think it’s Zito, toss a coin between MadBum and Tim, Vogie game 3, Cain 4, Zito or the guy who didn’t start game 2 if Zito didn’t pitch well for game 5, Vogelsong has 7. Game 6 is the other TBA. This won’t be easy for Bochy.

Not sure if I can make it out to SF for the WS. If I did it would be the 6th or 7th game if needed (given the POs that might not be a bad bet). The trip would pretty much take out our ’emergency’ savings and given the last couple of years here, that money might be better spent, but…(by the way, Mrs Bozo says you gotta go you clown).

Either way, there is no way I can make it out for the first two. If you guys do a FlapSeriesalooza and meet in front of Pac Bell. Could you do me a favor and spill a little beer on my brick? I know it’ll be crowded and all but it sure would make a Clown happy.

Is there a significance in misspelling Matheny’s name as “Metheny”? The “mayhem” when Kelly replaced Lohse, BTW, was the would be DP grounder by Pence, an infield single, a couple force outs, and a couple walks. Leaving Carpenter and Lohse in too long were Matheny’s errors, not who replaced either one.

    • eddacker's avatar eddacker said, on October 23, 2012 at 4:00 am

Yes, at the time it looked like Matheny had on his ‘we are going to sink or swim’ with this reliever face on. Then the sink turned to drowning and he had to do a switch.
