A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

One Day, One Game…To Play Another Day…

Posted in Uncategorized by chipower9 on October 22, 2012

I am going to try to keep this short, but it is difficult to focus, what with all the thoughts and emotions that have encompassed this joyous ride. Anyway, here goes…

First a couple of tidbits. I was listening to KNBR on my drive this morning (which I ALWAYS do, unless I am on the led sled). There were a couple of things I found really interesting.

First, to date, for this NLCS series, the Giants have had either NLCS or WS MVPs throw out the first pitch.

Will “The Thrill” For Game 1.

Benito “Benny” Santiago for Game 2.

For Game 6 yesterday, Jeffery “The Hack Man” Leonard was the man.

That leaves only ONE. And the mention was could it be Cody Ross? Just the talk about these first pitches, etc., gave me chills and goose bumps. So, would Ross throw out today’s pitch? Would he be welcome? I yelled to no one in particular (as I was driving alone), HELL YES! (And next year? Ross a Giant?? Well, that’s a different topic for a different day, because it is NOT YET time to fire up the Hot Stove.)

But I want to rewind and discuss The Hack Man. There was mention this morning too about an instance between Roger “THE Humm Baby” Craig (while manager of our Giants) and Hack Man. The story goes that Leonard showed up one day (not sure this was in the club house, dugout, etc.) with his hat on backwards. Craig politely told him to turn his hat around. There were supposedly some long stares, etc. but eventually Leonard turned the hat around because he had “huge respect for the man.” Anyway, I just thought that was a really cool story, and was another instance where I got the chills and goose bumps.

So here we are. GAME SEVEN, Flappers!

Seriously, it took FIVE elimination games to get here. Who woulda thunk it?

Game 3 – NLDS. San Francisco Giants 2, Cincinnati Reds 1. WP – Sergio Romo.
Game 4 – NLDS. San Francisco Giants 8, Cincinnati Reds 3. WP – Tim Lincecum.
Game 5 – NLDS. San Francisco Giants 6, Cincinnati Reds 4. WP – Matt Cain.
Game 5 – NLCS. San Francisco Giants 5, St Louis Cardinals 0. WP – Barry Zito.
Game 6 – NLCS. San Francisco Giants 6, St Louis Cardinals 1. WP – Ryan Vogelsong.
Game 7 – NLCS. San Francisco Giants starter: Matt Cain. Let’s GET IT ON!

The riot gof off a great line in the Chron….”When you’ve been around this game a long, long time you know it takes more than sheer talent. You’ve really really got to trust the guy next to you.”
So much more true of baseball than other sports too. You’ve only got a fraction of a second to decide what to do with a pitch when you are at bat, depending on game situation, count, etc. And you can be hit for like ARod at any time if you fuck up. Robinson Cano is a truly great hitter, who was unbelievably humbled.
Same thing in the field, where a reserve like Brooks Conrad gets pressed into duty and becomes a metaphor for fail. Cards lately have been their own worst enemies, esp in the field. It does take a lot more than talent to succeed and fight through the adversity SF has faced to get to this point in the season, and its post.

Just got out the gym (it’s 5 minutes drive from my house, no excuses) and on kcbs radio they said it’s already clearing and blue skies in Marin. Storm should be moving south from SF, maybe scattered showers but nothing game threatening. Wasn’t blade our weather guy during fantasy season?

Well, at least most of you will actually see the game. Starts here in Saigon at 7am, I’ll be up by 6:30 getting ready to go to school and then out the door before 8am.. might see the first couple innings, then only able to check in via internet. This is so fun. And win or lose game 7, it’s still been amazingly fun. Different kind of fun than two years ago. That was sort of just euphoric unbelievable magic, watching it unfold. This, this feels like awe at how they’ve battled and meshed and stayed in it and are on the threshold of a(nother) dream.

Keys to the game? Fucking anything could happen, with anybody leading the way. That’s what I love about this team. Off-hand, though, I’d say keys would be Cain not giving up the home-run ball… Scutaro continuing his stellar play and Pablo also staying hot… and either Posey or Pence actually doing something at the plate. And, of course, the Flap mantra via Pawlie and Craig, “We score, we win”… especially if we score early and often. Would love to see them charge out of the gate and not look back (also eloquently stated already here today)… Enjoy it all, gentlemen and gentlewoman…

I like your keys to the game, Paul. A good friend with whom I work just stopped by and we were discussing today’s game. He said “Posey and Pence tonight…you heard it here first.” I hope you (and he) are right.

Bozo mentions Blanco’s and Belt’s blogs, and among the other ones, I caught Kontos’ interview last night. Now this may or not mean a darn thing, but this is a very well spoken group of young men. Personally, I think it does mean something. No, one doesn’t have to be a Rhodes scholar or rocket scientist or whatever the latest analogy to intelligence might be, to play the game or play it well, but speaking clearly is, IMO, one sign of thinking clearly as well. Maybe I’ve just noticed it with this team more than some other teams- but I’ve heard a lot of interviews with athletes over the years- no group has ever impresed me more with the clarity of their speech than this one.I remember the disgraceful episode where Greg Papa mocked Pablo’s English, but listen to what the Panda says- like any player, he’ll utter many of the cliches that help them get through what can be an endless parade of media folks asking the same questions over and over, but he’s a thougtful young man, like most here. Getting to the bottom line of what I think this means on the field- clear thinkers make good decisions and while anyone make a poor one in the heat of battle, I’ve been impressed all year by the good judgement our guys exhibit..
In other words, they aren’t a bunch of dummies like their opponents 😉

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 22, 2012 at 9:52 am

you’re making some assumptions here about the clearness in which they think on/off the field but I agree with all of it. Good analysis

With help from a Scooter or a Belt double
Words that are certain to give the Cards trouble:

I’ve mentioned this before but one of the neat things when the 49ers were in the postseason so regularly- and often winning it all, was how it extended the holiday season for us. Now if we can get them and the Giants in the spirit of giving (to us) , we’ll have a Thanksgiving beginning about November 1 and the finish of the holidays real close to pitcher and catcher reporting date. I can live with an extra turkey dinner or two…

  19. ferrethead's avatar ferrethead said, on October 22, 2012 at 10:54 am

Flappers, I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to be going to the game tonight. I haven’t been to a post-season game in 23 years. Sad to say, I was pretty ‘altered’ back then, and – with the obvious exception of the earthquake non-game – I am not sure if my memories are my own or manufactured from years of watching replays. Not tonight! Tonight, I will attempt to etch each glorious memory on to my aging brain – whatever happens, this is an experience that I didn’t think I would get. (My sweet friend even offered to pay for my ticket, since I’m not working. I will be paying, just not ’til I get back to work, but still – sweet, right?)

We are sitting in section 103 – looks like shouting distance to the Cards’ bullpen. I heard JT Snow (sigh) talking about how opposing players talk about how rough the Giants’ fans are to bullpen pitchers. So, I am asking my Flap family for some suggestions of things to say so that I may add to that reputation. You are all so much more informed about our opponent, I figure you might have some nuggets. In addition to bringing my LOVE to the Giants, I would feel myself remiss if I didn’t thoroughly demoralize their opponent.

And, pregame the dude from Metallica apparently said over the PA system — “let’s kick some Cardinals’ ass”. Maybe he should do an encore tonight.

This was way out of character for me last night, but after Pagan struck out and it looked like the Giants might not add to the 2-0 lead, I said to wife and daughter, “This guy’s going to get a hit.” “Is that hoping or predicting?” “He’s going to get a hit.”

“This guy,” of course, was Marco Scutaro, who broke it open with that 2-run double. Before the end of the regular season, I said I couldn’t wait to see what he’d be like in the playoffs. He’s the kind of player who would’ve fit in so well with those dominant Yankees teams in the late 90s. I don’t know how tonight will play out, but I feel a helluva lot better that, with everything on the line, “this guy” is on our side.

The stat of the game last night? Try this one: Cardinals’ lead off hitters went 0 for 9! That will definitely limit options for playing small ball. This game is not in the bag. That leads to sloppy play. I’m sure the Giants are not thinking that way; Bochy will have them focused and not assuming a damn thing. Plus, though Cain pitched well last time out, he was susceptible to the long ball again. We really can’t get down via a long ball or two, with those flamethrowing Pen fucks coming in early. That’s not a good scenario. An early lead and Cain keeping the ball down and no brain fart cripple belt high fastballs is the scenario I’m looking for…

You’re right, Chi, that photo of the flying High 5 by Pagan is great.
I don’t know if that’s an optical illusion from the camera angle, or he really did go that high. No doubt he can dunk the basketball with that vertical. The guy is a superior athlete. Sign him, definitely…

Not sure if you (or any of the other Flappers) have checked out all the photos there (about 39), but they are all great. I like the one with the bat splitting (around 36 or 37), and 38 (little girl on her dad’s shoulders).

Well, I guess I will segue from your post into letting everyone know that should the Giants win this evening’s game, Pawlie is staying at my Aunt’s house, with one condition – an autographed copy of his book gifted to her . . . My aunt already has two foreign exchange students staying there. Yes, he did ask about if he would be sleeping . . . umm . . . in the same room as them? I said I only can provide lodging and extracurricular perks he would have to score/work on.

Me? I want a ticket to the game before I am likely going to commit to a flight out there, but ya never know. 🙂

lqtm. Actually snarkk, I have no idea, but do know that they mostly come from Europe and “rotate” with new ones about every semester or so. She has a 4 story Victorian, with plenty of room, located in the Sunset “Avenues” area, less than a block from Golden Gate park. Great location, with free shuttles to the phone park according to her.

Blade – you looked at StubHub? Game 1 WS tix, SRO starting at $380.

Bleachers and UR some can be had for high 4s.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 22, 2012 at 2:12 pm

Thanks Chi, because I went into cardiac arrest when Pawlie said upwards of $1000 + at the 2010 World Series. I saw seats for $100 in the nosebleed seats for the playoffs and obviously those will be 10X more at a WS. Mind boggling. Like Flav said, I’m not certain I want to part with the ducats . . . Hmm.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on October 22, 2012 at 2:17 pm

My daughter went to game 2 of the WS. She and her friend invited me along. I had the money, but decided not to go. As soon as the time came where I knew they were on the road (and I had “missed the bus”) I was seriously kicking myself in the ass.

Yeah, with all that said, I probably wouldn’t throw down that kind of coin for tix. But, if a bunch of Flappers got together to watch a game near the park, I would be down with that.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 22, 2012 at 2:25 pm

The decision to go out there again – after having just returned a week ago – will be an emotionally fueled decision. I might just say fuck it and get the ticket. Pawlie got an unbelievable deal on the flight, where he is able to write it off as a business expense. I have about 100K miles on both Southwest and United, so I guess I would use that to get out there. Again, I hope the good karma of thinking about going means the Giants will ROCK AND ROLL THE CARDS COLLECTIVE FRICKIN’ ASSES TONIGHT.

Ahh, ok. For whatever reason Ted, I always think 19th is near the beach (probably because I access it from HI280) and the streets start going up as you go toward the Haight. Obviously the other way around.

Years ago when we were first hanging out together, Mrs. Snarkk used to live on 48th somewhere near (north of?) Noriega. Mostly friggin foggy and colder than hell out there, as I remember. We used to walk back from a Chinese restaurant (can’t remember name) on foggy nights, then go inside to “get warm”…

I always get confused about the names of streets in San Francisco. However, if you show me one of the Avenues, Golden Gate Park, and/or I get to the end of highway 280, I can find my Aunt’s house.

I don’t have much to say except I’m a nervous wreck.
Well, actually I do have more to say. One of the coolest things about this incredible run in the playoffs for the Giants is that it brings more respect nationally for what the Giants accomplished in 2010. In 2011, it was convenient for a lot of them to call the Giants a fluke. This season takes away that “fluke” talking-point. And, if Buster hadn’t been injured last season, who knows….the Giants could have been on the quest for a three-peat this season. That scenario was possible.

You know, I would LUV to be a player in tonite’s game.
This is what you play for. The nervousness, the do or die, the incredible crowd, the fear of failure, the fear of success.
What are the most memorable moments of life? The ones where you knew what was going to happen, the ones where whichever way it went, it really didn’t matter? Hell no.
No, the memorable times are where you knew a die would be cast, where whichever direction you went, something important would happen. Where you did NOT know what the result would be. In those moments, you were truly alive, all the senses were on Defcon 1. Good or bad result, you treasure those memories even now. I’ve had some, I’m sure everybody else here has some, too…
