A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Election Day Hoopla! November Madness!

Posted in Uncategorized by zumiee on November 5, 2012

Abe Lincoln once said: “You can’t fool all the people all the time,” but that doesn’t stop some politicians from trying! And so….election day has finally arrived. Like the long baseball season, full of highs and lows, and moments of joy and despair, the long election campaigns finally come to a close for 2012. And there’s much at stake. Nate Silver’s reputation, for example. His 538 blog now has Obama at a 92% chance of winning. Nate is ALL IN on this prediction.

Speaking of Abe Lincoln, I dressed up like Abe for a Halloween party this year. Well, I was trying for Abe, but I think I probably achieved a 19th-century undertaker, or magician. Consider it my challenge to that poser Daniel Day-Lewis, whose version of Lincoln is in a Spielberg film. It could be a good film. I haven’t seen it yet. The film is based on an excellent book: “Team of Rivals,” by Doris Kearns Goodwin, whose baseball memoir “Wait Til Next Year” is a very enjoyable and poignant book.

Of interest to me in the election, besides the presidential race, is the Brown/Warren Senate race in Massachusetts, and the challenge that Michelle Bachman is getting for her Congressional seat in Minnesota. In California, there are several important Propositions being voted on that affect a diverse group of topics, including school funding, unions, food labeling, and the death penalty.

But getting back to Lincoln- it’s possible that Abe was aware of baseball. The sport was around in those days, in its early forms. Some Civil War soldiers played it. 19th century baseball is a pretty cool concept. Baseball- it flows through our nation’s history; a wonderful part of life’s rich pageant. Enjoy election day, Flappers, and I hope everyone VOTES!!!!

*19th century baseball is a pretty cool concept*… Totally agree and the more I think about what that must have been like the more I wish I could go back in time and play the game.
That costume is rad. You might have left the popcorn ceiling out of the pic, though. I don’t think they had popcorn ceiling back in Abe’s heyday. The brick fireplace for sure.
I voted by mail (for the first time) last week.

Nice, zum. Wilson or romo beard might have put you over the top.
A long time co-worker grew up in scandinavian country that gets top grades for residents being happiest in the world. Yes, they pay high taxes, especially on luxury goods. A BMW over there would cost 2 or 3 times what it would here. Bu the country is run very efficiently, its people have access to adequate health care throughout their lives, they have excellent transit, and libraries and other services are not being curtailed.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch…Merc had an online story about the pct of taxes on foreign income being paid by Apple, which is 1.9%. They, of course, are hardly alone even among tech giants, who routinely launder profits through Ireland, Netherlands and the Caribbean to avoid such things. All of which is perfectly legal, as I’m sure their well paid accountants would tell you.
As per usual, the richest of the rich use the legal system to hang on to as much of what they have as possible, while across America there are people out of work and families in need, and infrastructure crumbles. Even if laws were changed, I’m sure the Chevrons of the world would find a way around paying fair share of their profits to the country and its citizens and like Bain capital, creating jobs here would be a distant second to maximizing profits. How about doing something that actually helps people improve quality of life, which is what it seems like the above mentioned country is more interested in doing?

I kid, but that’s the range of political discourse in the country now. If you aren’t for unadulterated corporate greed at all costs, you are a commie who wants an 80% tax rate across the board.

couple weeks ago chron biz report section had a column on stanford wonks who are backbone of Mitt’s eco program. Reading what they want sounds like old bush loony tunes mantra, less regulation, lower corp taxes and of course that big jobs promoting concept of tax cuts for the super top of the mountain types, th eguys who need it the least.
I dunno, but my old buddies from work etc that were at the opposite end of the spectrum had little trouble spending money when they felt like having a good time, which was not always restricted to friday nights. Paying the PGE bill or making a car payment, maybe not so much. So my theory was that if these guys had more money to spend it would give an immediate boost to local economy, instead of that of Cayman Isles.

flav, where u think Upton and bourn wind up? CBS guys thought either Nats or philly. Allegedly Nats been after bourn for a while and would slide harper to a corner. Philly might have dumped vic and pence but they still have all that pitching and are out to reload and compete.
I’m not into bourn but upton would be intriguing….chance to tap gloves with his brother too if he was here. I still think SF is class of the divsion, even if LA wins Greinke bidding war with Angels. They still have some other holes to fill, including middle of the chest of a few of them.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on November 6, 2012 at 12:54 pm

I think they will end up in Philly and Washington, probably respectively. I could also see Upton in Atlanta once Bourn is gone for sure. I’d love Upton but he isn’t coming out to San Francisco unless we totally overpay which we won’t do. And I’m just not that interested in Bourn unless it’s on a 2 year deal which is probably 2-3 years less than he will end up accepting……….

  20. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on November 6, 2012 at 1:18 pm

For some reason I was thinking about Angel Villalona. Melky is one thing but Angel adds another can of worms . Right now he is on the 40 man but Restricted (Visa problems? Wink, wink.). If he gets his visa the Giants are going to have to do something with the kid. Granted he’ll be back in San Jose but I’m wondering if the Giants will burn a spot on the 40 man for him?

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on November 6, 2012 at 1:26 pm

I think he’ll eventually be dropped off the 40 on some deep, dark winter’s day, or on New Year’s Day with all the bowl games, when the news will be buried somewhere. Or traded as a PTBNL in some innocuous transaction with the Royals, or some such. I think there is a snowball’s chance this kid will ever be a real Giants prospect again…

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on November 6, 2012 at 1:53 pm

Wasn’t there some sort of a lawsuit threat or something if they hadn’t added him to the 40 man? Granted after year that’s probably not an issue any more and you’re probably right Snarkk (hell, the kid might not ever be able to get a visa). I was just curious about it.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on November 6, 2012 at 1:58 pm

Villalona filed a lawsuit against the Giants at one point, but that was later dropped.

  21. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on November 6, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Couple of points of interest here. First, he is a first baseman. I think we have that sorted out for the near future with Belt.

If the team does not put him on the 40, he will be exposed via the Rule 5 draft.

He played this summer in the Dominican Summer League. Here’s the line on him:

    44 games, 193 PA, 155 AB, 47 H, 32 R, 9 2B, 7 HR, 34 RBI, 23 BB, 40 Ks. .303, .430, .497, .927.

Not bad numbers, and he is only 21. So, I would be surprised if he doesn’t end up on the 40 again.

But seriously, what do you do with him long-term when you have Belt?

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on November 6, 2012 at 1:54 pm

He’s only 21, but he signed when he was 16, I believe. That’s an old 21, considering part of that time was dealing with the law, so he had no training for a long time. Whether he was innocent or guilty, I think he’s got too much baggage for the Giants, and the 40 man position was some sort of thing the Giants agreed to do — remember he sued the Giants in 2011 for breach of contract, then dropped it. I think suing your employer is generally not good for your future there…

It’s especially satisfying knowing vermin like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are absolutely despondent.

    Congrats to Obama!
And it was cool to see that the GOP Senate candidates that said weird things about rape got defeated. McCaskill won!
And Warren won. Cool! Scott Brown, take a hike.
And kudos to Nate Silver. You rock! Take a bow.

McCaskill gave a great speech, IMO. Even managed to compliment Akin wiithout really complimenting him. Akin, on the other hand, managed to make his concession speech sound like a victorious one. I don’t think he ever mentioned McCaskill’s name…

That result was a bitter pill for Republicans to swallow. They were ahead in that one until Akin’s rape comments.
