A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Prediction Time!

Posted in Uncategorized by twinfan1 on March 31, 2013

The starting 9 position players ( Blanco and Torres are considered starters ) and 6 pitchers are required. The required stats are xFIP, XERA, BABIP, and UZR/150…just kidding.
Required for position players are BA, HR, RBI. For the 5 starting pitchers it’s W-L, ERA. For Romo it’s W-L, saves and save opportunites. Very basic stuff. I’ve added OPS for the position players and WHIP for the pitchers. You may add any stats you like. There’s no prize (unless Craig decides to award one later), there is just the pride in knowing that you sucked less than everybody else.
And additional required prediction is the order of finish in the NL West and the Giants W-L record. Since there is no prize, feel free to use other Flapper’s numbers as a guide, no need to hide your picks to prevent someone from stealing them.
And remember- unless you make the required predictions you may not laugh at, trash, or snicker derisively about other predictions.
So have at it!
( you’ll have until noon tomorow to make changes – if you make any, repost your entire prediction slate, not just the change)

Uh, it didn’t help…

If it”s not OK, I’m in fuckin’ Santa Fe and this morning I got an Easter Blessing from the Archbishop at the Cathedral, then late this afternoon at a mountain spa got an hour in a private hot tub with Mrs. Snarkk, then a sauna, then a 20 minute feet dangle in a “foot spa” hot pool, finished with an hour’s deep tissue massage from a chick named Gaia, finished off by an awesome dinner in town — so whatever…

I think there’s a strong chance somebody else will be playing leftfield for the Giants by the time August gets here, and Blanco and Torres will be the #4 and #5 outfielders.
I think at least 1 of these 3 teams’, and possibly 2 of these 3 teams’ managers will be fired this season:
    Mets, Rangers, or Dodgers.
The Mets manager is a red-a##, and his act will wear thin as the team has another abysmal season; the Rangers will not be very good this season; and if the Dodgers are struggling at .500 by the middle of the season, the new owners will want to shake things up. And they didn’t hire 2-Trips.

  17. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 31, 2013 at 10:27 pm

Good article today in the NY Times (and reprinted in the SF Chronicle) about strikeouts. The A’s hitters set an AL record last year for striking out. SABR/Moneyball is HRs, walks, and strikeouts. Not so much steals and sac bunts.
Striking out has lost a lot of the stigma it used to have. And because of PED testing, the pitchers aren’t as afraid to throw strikes to the hitters. Also, in general, relief pitching is better than it used to be. Guys are specializing in relief pitching at the lower levels in more roles than they used to, i.e. talented pitchers are not just always wanting to be starters and closers now. At the lower levels there is more respect for other relief roles.

  18. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 31, 2013 at 10:36 pm

Kind of a funny interview with Cespedes the other day in the Chronicle. Basically in the interview he said he just wants to play well, become a free agent, and make a lot of money. Those are practically the exact quotes. Nothing about what he hopes the team will achieve in those years. But it doesn’t matter anyway; he’ll be traded for prospects at some point.

  19. James's avatar James said, on March 31, 2013 at 10:45 pm

The Giants will again be near the top of the league in OPS plus, with improved numbers from RF, 1B, and SS compensating in part for no Melky and a drop off from Buster. The third base triumvirate delivers a credible 750 OPS. We finish 7th in runs scored.

The bullpen falls off, and Timmy does not return to form, although he has a little better luck. MadBum picks it up, and the staff collectively gives a similar performance to last year, finishing 7th in ERA and WHIP.

In combination with an inexplicable week-long lack of interesting live music and some poorly chosen restaurants on my part, the Giants ruin our trip to NYC by being 7 games behind the division leaders and other WC contenders on September 17th. The Giants very good fortune in winning 94 games last year is reversed, and they finish with a record that’s closer to what the season’s run differential projects.

    • paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on March 31, 2013 at 11:19 pm

So, if you choose better restaurants and clubs with live music, will the Giants be closer than 7 games? 🙂

Giants win the Division with 92 wins. San Diego, Diamondbacks, Los Angeles, and Rockies follow. San Diego and Atlanta take WC spots. Cincinatti wins the Central Division. Washington wins East.

In the AL West, Mariners shock (of course they were helped by moving in the fences) and barely take the WC from the A’s. Angels win the division. The two Texas teams win sucktitude and are confined to a room full of horse shit, wondering where their pony is. 🙂

In the Central, Tigers again win the Division; with KC taking one of the WCs. In the East, Blue Jays win the division and Tampa Bay gets the WC. Yankmees point fingers, mostly at ARod, as they tank to last place. Red Sox Nation is morose as well, as they barely finish ahead of the Yanks.

Ah, Opening Day. One of my 4 or 5 favorite days of the year……
And thank you Michael, for rolling out this thread.
    Predictions:
I’m just gonna roll out who I think wins the divisions….
NL West: SF Giants (92 wins)
    NL Central: Reds
    NL: East: Nats
    WC: Braves and Dodgers

AL West: For this one, I’ll do the entire division. Angels, Mariners, A’s, Texas and Houston. I think Seattle is a dark horse this year and I see Texas as falling at least a step or two backward off last season. And despite the results of last night, each of these four teams get to play the Astros 18 times this year. That’s gotta help their record hugely….
AL Central: Tigers (closely followed by Royals)
AL East: Jays, Rays, Orioles, Red Sox, Yankees! –it would be a fun year to work as the headline writer at The Post this year.
    AL WC: Royals and Mariners

NL Winner– Giants beat the Nats (though I recognize the astronomical odds we face to win our third WS in four years. I wonder how many times that’s been done in the NL? Ever? I’ll look it up later.
AL Winner: Jays beat the Mariners
    We beat Jays.

    Individual season statistics:
    The Arms
    The Horse– 17-7 3.04 1.09
    Timmy the Kid: 13-12 3.93 1.35
    MadBum: 15-9 3.77 1.17
    Voggy: 12-10 3.88 1.27
    ZenMaster: 12-10 4.00 1.35

    Posey: .296 22 bombs, 97RBI’s
    Panda: .291, 20 bombs, 75RBI’s
    Crawford: .250 8 bombs 50RBI’s

    Belt: .296 13 bombs, 81RBi’s, 11 stolen bags
Lf field platoon of Torres and Blanco. As I’ve said, a platoon will be critical to both their heath and their production. Blanco was equally under-inspiring against both L/R pitchers last year, hitting in the .240’s against both. But he’s a career .262 hitter against righties.
Torres is a weirdo from year to year vs lefties. Last year he hit .286 against them. In 2011 he hit .170. In 2010 he hit .226. In 2009 he hit .338.
So for this platoon to work, he needs to have an *on* year against them. If he doesn’t, or if he gets hurt, I don’t feel like The White Shark can handle the load by himself in which case Sabes will probably go out and get a LF at the break. But let’s assume the platoon works, I’ll say Torres .285 (hitting mostly against lefties) with 12 stolen bags and Blanco hits .260 with 25 stolen bags. Congrats to Torres for getting the Opening Day start, by the way. Kershaw’s a lefty so it makes sense but it’s a great way to acknowledge him as a true great Giant from 2010.
Angel Pagan: I still hear almost nothing about Pagan stepping up and filling in for Melky after he vanished. He went something like 16 for 32 after Melky disappeared. It might have been a little better than that, I can’t recall. In many ways he saved the season by keeping the ship afloat and filling a big part of the void that was created when Melky decided to go start fake websites for a living.
But I also was concerned with how motivated he would be after he got his contract. He was fantastic in the WBC so maybe I was wrong about that. I’ll say .281 12 bombs and 31 stolen bags
Pence: Love this guy, but I just don’t think this park is for him. He hit SO MANY fly balls to the wall at ATT. Remember, he hit at 2 of the most hitter friendly parks in the league for his entire career. He needs to hit more line drives and his career average around 15% ain’t gonna get it done. I’ll say he goes .265 18 bombs 98RBI’s (just cause of where he’ll hit in the order)

I’m going to try something that never works today. I’m turning off my ph and not looking at the internet at 1pm and will try to get home by 3:15 or so. Hopefully, I can watch the game taped and catch up to live near the end of the game. So if you don’t hear from me, that’s why.
This is a year like no other than I can remember. The Dodgers and Giants are both loaded and expected to compete all season. The Angels have paid their way to the top. And the Royals, A’s and O’s are all expected to be good this year. Same with Seattle, if you listen to me. the West Coast is poised to take over ESPN’s lead stories this year. Will it happen? Will their be able to take the cameras off the Yanks and Red Sox? I think they’ll be forced to with Boston and NY toiling at the bottom of their division. And when was the last time THAT happened?
Anyway, can’t wait for the year to start. Can’t wait to turn my phone off at 1pm today. Individually, we are who we are. Together, we are world champions!

Flav, I am at an internet cafe and set my lineup for a few days. See what happens. Also, I shook up my team a bit and dropped a couple and added a couple of people – no guarantee of course, that I get what I want on the waiver wire. Anywho, I may call on you occasionally to do something to my lineup. Additionally, it would be nice to check it out on occasion to see if I have left a pitcher off my roster that is pitching that day. Thanks in advance.

Good “turn out” for Prediction Day, better than I expected. Some notable but not unsurprising hold outs, so far. But Noon Pacific is the deadline… a few notes:
At least a couople of you have Vungo and Blanco combining for about 100 RBI. Excuse my comment if you intended to do that, but I doubt that was your intent. There’s time to change it…
In general, some pretty monster calls..
I agree with Z, and have noted it myself- I wouldn’t be surprised if LF were manned by somebody other than Vungo and Blanco by midseason. My picks for them are soft, perhaps more hopeful than realistic- but what’s opening day about more than hope ? I’ll stand by my calls on them but if Peguero or Brown take over, it wouldn’t shock me..
Another soft call is Timmy. I’ve dismissed ST performance for pitchers in most cases, but gosh, he didn’t do much to rekindle enthusiasm . Someone noted that his fastball velocity dropped dramatically in just a couple innings-not a good sign. But here I’m going with “experts”, most of whom predict a nice bounce back..
Romo: Sorry, just don’t see him holding down the closer job. I’m still seeing Rolen hit that hangin-est slider in the history of hangin’ slidersabout 450 feet and sending all of us into a grumpy sleep for the winter. Casilla or Hembree finish the year closing- or- you know who. He’s not out of the picture, IMO..
Don’t see Gaudin being here long- he earned the spot but his recent MLB work doesn’t inspire confidence, even just mopping up.Even for that role, the idea is to give the guys a chance to get back in it- not just eat innings. Ramirez has been re-igned and he’s in Fresno, along with Hembree, Rosario, Runzler, and a couple others- they’ll make a move quickly if Gaudin doesn’t pitch well out of the gate…
No one will ever be able say I went 20-80 on another first baseman again- I went 22-85…
I remember lot of props for how Pagan stepped up after Melky went down, I know talked about it. But he was not alone. and even with Scooter’s fantastic and inexpicable performancew down the stretch, I think that how the bottom of the order hit , particularly in September, was as key as anything…

I didn’t even guess RBI’s or bombs for Torres and Blanco. I just went BA and SB’s. I don’t think HR’s or RBI’s are going to be too relevant for either of them. Am I kicked out of the contest? 🙂
And Snarkk, send me yours whenever you get home.

I, too, see some interesting shake-outs that will make some of these moot.
Will Belt try to muscle up his HRs and end up inflating his SO? Will his runs turn out to be more important than RBI? Will the white bull platoon make it past all-star break? I think Pagan/Scooter will give Panda/Posey lots of opportunities and I like Paul’s “closer? we don’t need a stinkin’ closer” comment, but I went with the rules.

The pitching strategy is different in a tie game vs. being ahead 1, Casilla is now the set up guy who would have pitched with a lead in the 8th, with Affeldt and/or Lopez available for a lefty.. Kontos would have pitched the seevnth in any case…
Blue is dissing Bochy too, but Bruce handled that as he usually has. Again, the pen strategy is very different in a tie vs, a lead. I’ll go with Bochy, even though I know he’s CY-less.

Pfffftttt. My turn off phone/internet/car radio thing worked to perfection and I made it home at 2:57. I can’t remember watching a Giants game on tape (without knowing the outcome) for years and the one thing that sucks about it is not getting into the flow of the game. I found myself constantly wanting to fast forward lulls in the game and so I was hitting ff, doubled ff, triple ff. It took me less than an hour to watch and I never got into the *baseball flow*. Lame, especially for opening day.
Rough ending, especially for Cain who was very good. Kershaw was fantastic though. Every pitch was perfectly placed. And he hit a bomb for the game winner so about all you can do is *tip your cap*. I didn’t watch the post game show, but I’d be interested in knowing how many games in history ended with the pitcher throwing a complete game AND the pitcher hitting a home run for the game winner……..
Anyway, no biggie, it’s just one game. I still don’t know why Pence failed to wear his shades. I guess looking cool trumped his interest in making a play…….

second pitcher since 1921 to pitch complete game shut out and hit home run on opening day according to knbr team. the other was bob lemmon in the ’50’s.

interesting. But were they the game winning hit? And you referenced opening day, I’m wondering about EVER. Shut out/HR/HR is game winning hit.
Why do I seem to be the only one asking this question on the internet, I can’t find the answer anywhere.

Well, if it makes anyone feel any better, in today’s Peanuts, Charlie Brown just lost his first game of the season 123-0. Lucy says it’s cuz they never got any breaks

Pretty darned awesome having regular season baseball back, no matter the result in the Giants game. I enjoyed watching it. The Braves/Phillies are on now. Should be a good one.
As I wait for it to start….anyone seen the movie “Game Change”? I saw that last night. That’s one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. I kid you not.

At least the real games start. Kershaw had one of those days. Tip your cap.

I’ve saved this thread for the predictions, maybe a couple more of us could do that too, for insurance.

Happy birthday Kevin. After dodging April Fools jokes all day, I’m gonna have to not believe this is your birthday, lest I fall for another one. Happy B-day though if it actually is 🙂 🙂 🙂
