Rings, Rings, and More Rings….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 8, 2013

I’ve never really taken the time to appreciate the gaudy detail of these championship rings. Here’s Dave Flemming, proudly showing off the last 3 years of bounty for his alma mater and current employer:

Here’s the White Sox ring from 2005. I like the look of this one:

Here’s a pic of all the Yankees rings up through 2000:

Here’s the Yankee ring from 2009. I think it’s cool with the 4 diamond bases:

Here is a pic of the Cardinals bling:

Here’s the Oakland A’s ring from ’74. They really went all out on the design of this one, eh? 🙂

I still like the 2010 SF ring best.

Me? I don’t like too much bling, so the 1953 Yankees ring and the Oakland A’s ring from ’74 both rock. I know, I know . . . Charlie must have went to the Dollar store to pick up the 30 something rings he presented to the players, coaches, his one friend, and secretary.

Also, where do you wear these baubles? Pimp convention? Championship boxing match? Do you have to buy accessories such as a pink Cadillac, Super Fly hat, and full length mink coat too?

Most of these rings look like they would have gone well with Walt “Clyde” Frazier’s attire back in the 1970s.

Thanks for this, Magnus. That’s a great analysis. I’m with you. I prefer the simpler rings. But easy, there, on the pink Caddy. I used to marvel at the pink Cadillac of the Say Hey Kid, parked for all to see at Shea Stadium when he was with the Mets. He wasn’t shy about it. The license plates said something like SAYHEY24. An uninterested, potbellied New York’s finest would stand by it. I recall looking into the car. If memory serves, some eight-tracks of Nat King Cole and a group. The Ink Spots? Naw. Somebody else. The Commodores? Nope. I wish I could remember.

I got to watch the ring ceremony a few hours ago. Very nice and very different from 2010. Practice does help.
The first thing that hit me AFTER, all the escorting of the rings was Bruce coming out for his, great smile. Orlando Cepeda and Murph, who ran out, brought a tear. Love those guys.
Scooter had an ear-to-ear grin that was nice and Zito, a tip of the cap for the fans was nice, too.
ROMO? All is going well; Timmeh gets a big cheer.
All in all I look forward to another RING CEREMONY

The mention of Fred lewis yesterday on blog got me to go back and take a look at what he did here in LF. Best season 2008 he had .791 OPS and an OPS+ of 106, and a 1.6 WAR. Career for SF .775 OPS, .355 OB/.420 slg. in over 1000 plate appearances.
blanco has been a high OB in career, but let’s see if he can keep that up the more he plays. Yes the defense and base speed of he and Torres will make a difference….I’m just not sure either of them will provide much at the plate. I could see Crawford moving up the order and sliding the LF platoon into 8th spot.

good Morning all, over on MSN Sports they did an article on the Ten Worst Sports contracts. Barry Zito was not on the list. I am a little surprised. But it is only the top 10, so that is subjective to the writer of the article.

Friday’s Opening Day was off the hook. We ponyed-up pretty big coin to sit in the Arcade, Section 146, but it was worth every penny, as we had a great shot of all the ceremonial happenings. It was the absolute best Opening Day to date (the one bummer was the lack of a flyover…thanks to the sequestration). I loved the way they brought the banner in on the SF Fire Dept. tug, and had “common fans” take the banner to Bochy and the boys in CF. Just a class ceremony all the way. My weekend was busy as hell (have not caught up on the latest couple of threads), but will try to shoot some pictures to Flav for posting in the Flapper Photo Bucket.

There are aspects of both the 2010 and 2012 rings that I like. I like the more rounded look of the 2010 ring, but like the details of the 2012 ring (7 diamonds on each side representing the 7 WS Giant titles), the player’s name and number of the side, and the cable car on the other side.

Rockies have been hot…time to cool their asses off, and get back to winning some games and that series.

Nip, 2 AM and you are posting here from left coast and telling Zumie to go read a book? Wow, try some warm milk, a good read and get proper rest, brutha.

I’m currently going through novels by R. Anaya who wrote the “Bless Me Ultima” story about a curandera that was recently made into a movie. Most often books are set in New Mexico among Mexican/Indian cultures.
I am looking forward to recently released Jane Gardam, Brit authoress I really enjoy for final in trilogy of Old Filth stories of two competing and very different British barristers. “Filth” in this instance is from an old English expression Failed in London Try Hong Kong.
Last, I saw that BBC has a short series (2 part I think) TV version of Alan Furst “Spies of Warsaw”, one of his better tales of WW2 Euro intrigue. I’ve read all his books and enjoy them a lot, fascinating stuff.

I’m with James- they’re hideous, surely no one would wear them. Or would they? Sabathia says only nerds would. DeRosa says big rings are not his thing, he displays his in his office. On the other hand, Bochy says he’ll wear his every day. I’m considering one of those replica rings to use as a brass knuckle for the next senior citizen brawl on half price pie day at the market…these two will never get my “Berry-Berry” again…

The 2003 Marlin’s ring is generally considered the tackiest ever- 122 diamonds, thirteen additional colored gemstones adorning the top piece and sides. The front bears a depiction of a marlin fish and reads “Marlins – World Champions.” The left side reads “World Series – 100th Anniversary – 2003” and features the Major League Baseball logo. Also displayed on that same side are the team logos of both the Marlins and their opponents, respectively, in the NL Division Series, NL Championship Series and World Series, as well as the score from the final game of each series. The right side features a highly detailed depiction of the Championship Trophy and lists the year (“2003) and the team’s regular season record (“91-71”). Also recorded on the right side is the last name of the recipient (the name will be released only to the winner per the consignor’s request) and title. “Intergold” and “10K” are engraved along the interior of the band. At least two recpients have offed them, one went for $9,280.00 at auction.
By contrast, our 2010 ring is considered as tasteful as one of these fine paper weights can be.Made by Tiffany & Co., it has 77 diamonds, the team logo, the recipient name, and a pic of, natch, the Golden Gate Bridge. All in all, a model of understatement.

2010 ring is better looking. Has a certain symmetry and class to it.
The new one looks a bit tacky and over the top, though I haven’t seen photos of it from all angles yet.
I thought maybe the older rings would be more classy. Generally, no…

  15. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 8, 2013 at 9:57 am

What do these rings cost the team? I’m guessing since they’re produced in volume, maybe the cost per unit to the team is $20K? How many do they give out? 200-250? So, the team blows $4 – $5 million on rings? That’s a pretty decent left fielder…

It’s too bad a player like Bill Hands never got a ring, but then Rollie Fingers did get three of ’em, including that ’74 one, and nearly got a fourth.

I didn’t know the Rose Bowl winner got a ring. That one might be the most impressive looking of the bunch.

Sounds like the concession workers beef is with Centerplate.
I think I mention once I worked as a beer vendor at the Stick back in the late 70’s. I was not an employee of the G’s but some wise guy named Harry something or other. The guy I reported too for my section each game was right out of central casting, complete with the stinkin cigar. He was like a crusty old umpire and you didn’t say shit to him or even look at him funny or he’d exile your sorry ass out to the bleachers where few could afford beer and all the brawls occurred.
So naturally I made the.mistake of giving him a wtf look one night when he assigned me out there and ended up spending about a month with the riff raff and the pigeons.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 8, 2013 at 2:44 pm

Well, ultimately the concessionaire has a contract with the Giants, right? I doubt if Larry Baer isn’t extremely aware of the dollars and cents involved — and has communicated in detail with Centerplate about what the Giants are willing to pay it. The company is reportedly out of South Carolina — a state known to be a paragon of workers’ rights…

I wonder if the A’s players found the clover-leaf motif on that ring a bit baffling. Sure, the owner was probably Irish-American with the name Finley, but still, it’s a stretch to include that on the ring. But that would be keeping with Finley’s attitude- “MY team, and MY ring design motif.”

I remember her vaguely from the “Beach” movies. And, no talent Frankie Avalon. More of my older brother’s thing, not mine. I’d say the today equivalent is Selena Gomez — also a Disney product, but, not as talented as Annette. Selena even had the PR-generated supposed boyfriend thing with Bieber that was joke. Frankie and Annette was actually real. Annette had MS for years, from what I read today it was a blessing she went after a lot of suffering. MS is nasty; Mrs. Snarkk’s step-grandma had it. Bad for the person with it, and the caregivers…

  29. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 8, 2013 at 4:21 pm

I am not devastated by her death. I barely knew her name.
The Rockies are displaying some pretty impressive offense in the first 6 games of this season. Their offense is the main reason I didn’t put them on the short list of teams who can’t make the playoffs this year. As a TEAM they are hitting .333. As a TEAM, their OPS is .945. That’s impressive no matter how small the sample size. And while I’m aware of their home/away splits in the past, I think this year might be different. Now, their pitching is still a problem but it’s been a strength so far this year (even in Colorado). Their team ERA is 2.80. Obviously, that will rise.
But I don’t think this team is a pushover by a long shot. And if our starters pitch the way they have the last 2 games, this will not be a good series for us….

You never know in any given series, but there’s no reason to think the Rockies will be better on the road than in the past. Last year they lost Tulowitzki for a quite awhile, but they sucked away with him in 2010, 2011. Career, Cargo is Nate Schierholtz away from home. Of course, they’ll now score 10 game here,, but a 50 loss road record is probably in the cards again.IMO.

  33. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 8, 2013 at 5:06 pm

Tulo and Cargo are the big names but they’ve got other hitters on that team. Fowler is a budding star. I LOVE Rutledge this year (for a middle infielder). And as I said, Rosario could easily lead MLB catchers in HR’s. And I know you like your ex-Twin Cuddyer. If he can stay healthy, another big asset for them. They are thin and their pitching is suspect as usual, but they are better than *the best Nepal has to offer*. You’d have to at least admit that.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 8, 2013 at 5:32 pm

They have some good hitters, but still it’s mostly at home.
Fowler has been a totally different guy away from Coors. Even Helton has had a huge difference. I’ll grant you that it’s too early to tell about Rosario and Rutledge but it’s like they spike the gatorade up there, hardly anybody has hit away from Denver.I’ve always liked Cuddyer but even he caught the bug. It’s weird.
But I don’t really care if they’re last or second to last. I still don’t them challenging us, LA, or AZ..

    1. I’d sport the ring, gaudy or not. Replica or not. In fact, I will enter the charity raffle the Giants are sponsoring for the ring. It’s because of what the ring stands for, aesthetically pleasing or not.

    2. I, like every other prepubescent male in America, pined for Annette Funicello. My memory says that she visited us at an assembly at Westover Elementary School in Stamford, CT. Some guy from the Mickey Mouse Club played a banjo. He wore a derby and checkered coat. Gene Sheldon? Annette wore a mink coat. In my revisionist memory, that is ALL she wore. I can’t be merely imagining this, can I? I called up Louise L. P., from that same school, and she does not recall The Visit. Why would she? Though Louise agrees that all the boys liked Annette and all the girls wanted to be like her. Better yet, Annette recorded a song just for me: “Tall Paul.” I wasn’t tall, but I remember the thrill of dancing with Louise at an after-school record hop when “Tall Paul” was played. I would like to think it was Ladies’ Choice, but I’m dreaming.

Pretty sweet, the Giants are grossing up the tax on the winner, so he/she has no out of pocket tax liability from winning. Since the income tax hit is estimated at $4991.25, I’ll use a 40% ballpark rate that yields my estimated market value of the ring at about $12,500 minimum. If they used a lower rate to estimate the tax, the value goes up…

before The Thrill showed up, it had been a few years since we had a player with some swagger. In fact, I can’t really name the guy who “swagged” like that before him. The teams pre-’86 all sucked and Altobelli’s ’78 team was a nice surprise. Who did they have, Vida Blue? The Count? Jack Clark was in his 3rd or 4th year with the team in ’78. But few rolled with the aura of The Thrill. He had just barely turned 22 when he blasted that ball off Ryan….
Will Clark showed up ready to announce his presence with authority (yup, still rolling with the Bull Durham line 🙂 )

I was always a huge Chili Davis fan and I think Mr. One Flap Down himself had a bit of swagger to him. But, I agree, Will had his own thing and the New Orleans connection was right in my wheel house.

Yeah, Chili dog was a fave. Jack Clark as well. When the pickings were thin, you went with what you had.

    Ring him UP!

Those rings are the jewelry analogs to the very finest of the BBOTD.

For those who are not letting K&K, Miller and Flemming babble on in the background:
