Dodgers Lose Grienke for Two Months
I hope you all caught the Dodger/Padre brawl last night. It wasn’t as good as The Mexico/Canada fight but there were a few Tyson fights that weren’t that good, either. Grienke hit Carlos Quentin and it was on. Grienke broke his collarbone in the melee. Apparently, there’s history with these two and Quentin had finally decided it was time to kick Grienke’s ass. I’m not totally sure what ZG was trying to do in this fight. He’s displaying an odd fighting technique. Check out where his left hand is on Quentin in these 5 pics:
Anyway, the game ended on a Juan Uribe pinch hit home run and he even threw up his jazz hands a little which made me smile even a little more than I already was smiling. Too bad the Dodgers won but Uribe is one of my top 3 favorite players from the 2010 team so it’s nice to see him produce after being so putrid for so long down in LA.
Here’s the only negative that might come from last night’s brawl: the Dodgers come together, rally together, coalesce or whatever you want Β to call it and play together as a team instead of a bunch of overpaid individuals. Brawls, especially when you lose your ace pitcher, tend to bring guys together. That would be an unfortunate fall out to this sorted, shocking(!) display of neanderthal behavior π π π

Impressive win by the D-Backs tonight. They were able to hang in there and grind out a win over Kershaw. An interesting stat is that the D-Backs are 11-2 against the Dodgers in their last 13 games with them. Some serious ownage lately for them.
Yes, and Z, you got your wish — someone finally did score against Kershaw….
The Dodgers seemed kind of flat in the first game after the brawl. It’s possible that the brawl could rally them in some way, but I’m kind of skeptical. There still just doesn’t seem to be much chemistry to that team. They’re not more than the sum of their individual parts. But we’ll see in the long run.
The first thing that’s clear from the replay is that the ball wouldn’t have hit Q if he hadn’t let it hit him. The second that’s clear is that Q was already headed to the mound before Greinke says or does anything,
You see it your way, and I see it my way.
Unfortunately, your are seeing it the way that makes the Dodger to blame only because he’s a Dodger.
I disagree with that assessment.
And the apologists for this assault may not realize that it was premeditated. He told Ozzie Guillen’s son he was going after Greinke if he was hit again. that was after the 4-8-09 incident. Guillen’s son tweeted about the threat yesterday after the benches cleared.
Your “moral conscience of the blog” act just gets tiresome sometimes. We’re not lesser people if we find some humor in this and you don’t.
You found humor in Craig celebrating the injury? He wasn’t being funny, pal. You obviously do need a moral conscience, if you think that’s cool.. Eat it with this “act” crap- Quentin assaulted Greinke, and that he was the wrong one is not just my take- it’s the take of many others with a moral conscience “act”.
The humor is in Greinke trying to talk smack to Quentin, and then trying to take him on in a body-slamming contest. I absolutely believe that Quentin would have went to firstbase if Greinke hadn’t said anything. You see the video differently, that’s fine. We just disagree.
Since when is defending a player who was injured because of an OUTLAWED act by another player something to be condemned? “He deserved a broken collarbone AT THE VERY LEAST for that dumb fuck move.” Is this the part you think is funny? Or is it the injury itself? So to answer your question- you are a lesser person if you think this was humorous.
You need to read my 12:15 post.
But you find no problem in a blogger celebrating the injury? Is objecting to that an “act”? No, it’s what any fan would ( or should) object to.Even if the injured guy wears Dodger blue.
I read it after. It’s ridiculous- more blaming the injured party. Read my 12.24- no real fan would express delight in a player’s injury- and you have no problem with it. Why ? No one would think it an “act” if you objected to such a thing. Instead you have a problem with it being objected to.
I don’t object to how anyone wants to see this. The two players involved are both doofuses. I don’t feel like I’m celebrating Greinke’s injury. But I’m not going to feel particularly bad about it either. I doubt that Dodger fans felt much sympathy for Buster in 2011, and Buster was a completely innocent victim in that one. In Greinke’s situation, Greinke takes part of the blame.
“no real fan would express delight in a playerβs injury”
You didn’t crack a smile when Bryce Harper threw a bat in the dugout, and it bounced back, and split his head open? Come on, that’s some funny stuff.
It’s the element of “come-uppance.” Some baseball fans see Greinke getting a bit of come-uppance in this situation.
You are evading a legit question- why do you not find it offensive as a fan of the game when someone does celebrate an injury to a player -which Craig clearly did
“The fact that the Dodgers lost their 2nd best starter because of it only adds to my glee.” You obviously do find my objecting to that more offensive than the glee with which Flavor savors it.I think you need to see if you can locate a “moral conscience act’ to purchase..
You found he deserved a bit of “come-uppance” because he said something? He deserved a broken collar bone for sassing Q? Man, i seriously misjudged you, despite our many disputes,I’ve always thought that you *did*have a moral compass.
I’d love to know who the other fans who you refer to are, the ones who think Greinke deserved it. Well, I know one. Just wondering, do you also agree that Coolbaugh, the coach killed by the foul ball, had a little come-uppance” due for not not paying attention?
BF found humor in the Greinke/Quentin incident; you didn’t. That’s all. I found some humor in it. Not as much as BF did, but there was some humor in it, IMO.
Like it or not, there are some “unwritten rules” in baseball, and Greinke violated one of them. I’m not saying I AGREE with that unwritten rule; I’m just saying it is what it is, and Greinke should know better, and in fact, he DOES know better now.
As to Harper, it’s sort of like if Greinke threw at Q, missed badly, the ball hit a railing of the dugout, caroms crazily towards Greinke breaking his collar bone. Yes, I might chuckle at that, you really got me on that one.
I’m guessing the next time Greinke hits a batter, he’ll not stare-down the batter, and he’ll keep his pie-hole shut.
It wasn’t humor he found-he said Greinke deserved the injury- twice. And you’re making up this unwritten rule. In fact, if you pay any attention at all- pitchers almost always drop their glove when a player charges the mound. And many “say something”- but you are in an immoral minority if you think, as you certainly seem to, that your fictional unwritten rule dictates that the pitcher deserves what he gets because he was lippy. Now if there was one rational reason that Greinke would be throwing at Q in that situation and doing so four years after he had several chances to– well, it’s absurd- but I’d be more charitable towards Quentin and his Dodger blue hating apologists.
One thing Flavor was probably right about- Quentin will get *his* little “come-uppance” , and he’s not hard to find, lunging over the plate.. and if someone does throw at him, and hurt him, my moral conscience act will object to that, too.
This may tough for you to fathom- but there are people who really do think it’s wrong to try to injure others- and do not find humor in the attempt. We have no “act” and we *are* better than those who find humor in what happened to Greinke. Or worse-express glee at his plight.
Lots of cool articles in the Giants magazine. And just some quirky facts, too. Kontos grew up a Cubs fan, and was outside on one of the streets next to Wrigley Field during the “Bartman” playoff game in 2003. And, get this, Bartman coached youth baseball, and Kontos’ brother was on Bartman’s team one season. It’s a small world sometimes.
Where IS Bartman now?…
There was an excellent documentary on ESPN a year or so ago about the Bartman incident. He’s still living in the general Chicago area, and still works at the same place he was working, and totally avoids interviews.
It seems like generally most of the Cub fans feel sympathy for him now, and wish things hadn’t gotten as weird as they did.
Yeah, Z, the Dogs were a little flat in the first game since “the brawl”. Perhaps emotionally drained. I do think it will draw them closer together, just not necessarily in the first game after. The Giants were very flat the first game after Melky got suspended, a loss to LA, if I remember correctly, which narrowed the gap in the West… after that, the Giants took off.
That’s a good point. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen for the Dodgers. (grin)
I do think LA will win a lot of games. Looking like the D-backs might too. Going to be a tough division.
One of the things that surprised me about the D-Backs/Dodger game was the overall enthusiasm of the Arizona fans during the game. The ballclub has revved up a lot of enthusiasm for this series, as “Beat L.A.” weekend. I guess there’s more leftover enthusiasm from 2011 in D-Back-land than I realized. Even with Justin Upton being traded away. Prado’s a good ballplayer; the D-Backs got a decent player in that trade.
In the NL West, obviously the most obvious team to have a target on their back for the other teams is the defending champ. But possibly because of the perception of LA trying to “buy” a championship, the other teams might also be gunning for the Dodgers as much as for the Giants. These “beat LA” themes will likely continue in all of the NL West cities. Which could, as I said before, cause LA to gel under an “it’s us against the world” mentality. Or not…. I’ve already been accused here of imagining things a lot…… π
Tomorrow’s (I mean, today’s) Giants game is absurdly early again. It’s almost surreal how early these Cub games are. And the games themselves look kind of surreal. Cold damp weather, with just a few thousand Cub fans scattered throughout the ballpark. It’s like…..Candlestick flashbacks!!
perfect for the UK, and I enjoyed the standing O the sun received around the fourth inning when blue sky broke through.
And wrigley/cubbies are my second favorites
so chant after me:
day games day games
yes yes yes
day games day games
ESPN UK is a mess
Absurdly early? The world hasn’t decided that everything will happen at a time that’s comfy for California folks.
.
You were 100 percent the instigator, but as we’ve gone through this before- I don’t fuck with your blog. You’ve restored it when I’ve told you that. What are your plans? I wasn’t “ballistic”, dude, I was, like most people , placing the blame for the incident on Quentin, not chortling about an injury because it was infllcted on a Dodger…
.
I’m not “piped up”, Flavor. And loving my team doesn’t mean abandoning my moral conscience “act”.It has held me in good stead for over six decades. It’s an act a few here could stand emulating.
STFU about your moral compass. I defended myself in the most recent thread.
Poorly.
clearly and brilliantly.
I really am grateful to have friends that love the Gmen.
I should move back to SF and be near my friends
you’re a good man, Edd. A very good man.
I agree, I’m thankful that Edd was one who encouraged me stand up to the ugly conduct from others. I’ll always consider him a friend .
