Dodgers Lose Grienke for Two Months

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 12, 2013

I hope you all caught the Dodger/Padre brawl last night. It wasn’t as good as The Mexico/Canada fight but there were a few Tyson fights that weren’t that good, either. Grienke hit Carlos Quentin and it was on. Grienke broke his collarbone in the melee. Apparently, there’s history with these two and Quentin had finally decided it was time to kick Grienke’s ass. I’m not totally sure what ZG was trying to do in this fight. He’s displaying an odd fighting technique. Check out where his left hand is on Quentin in these 5 pics:

grienke1

grienke2

grienke3

grienke4

Anyway, the game ended on a Juan Uribe pinch hit home run and he even threw up his jazz hands a little which made me smile even a little more than I already was smiling. Too bad the Dodgers won but Uribe is one of my top 3 favorite players from the 2010 team so it’s nice to see him produce after being so putrid for so long down in LA.

Here’s the only negative that might come from last night’s brawl: the Dodgers come together, rally together, coalesce or whatever you want  to call it and play together as a team instead of a bunch of overpaid individuals. Brawls, especially when you lose your ace pitcher, tend to bring guys together. That would be an unfortunate fall out to this sorted, shocking(!) display of neanderthal behavior 🙂 🙂 🙂

Agree, Craig, the Dogs could adopt an “it’s us against the world” mentality and gel as a team better than they have of late. MLB had better suspend Quentin, and fast, before the rematch series in LA next week…

And it does indeed look like Greinke is trying to get his hand down Quentin’s pants, doesn’t it….

A personal note: A buddy of mine (who played on my softball team for a few years) played baseball with Quentin at Stanford– He came out a couple of times to The Oasis after games for beers. This dude is not a small man, he’s thick from top to bottom and that was when he was still in college so I’m sure he’s gotten *thicker*.
Kemp was a dumbfuck to confront Quentin as he was headed to the parking lot and I wish Carlos had kicked his ass, something I’m quite sure he would have done had Kemp done anything more than say “next time, Bitch” or whatever it was that he said to him.

I am not sure what Grienke is doing in that first picture. It isn’t the Drunken Monkey. Maybe the Tiger Claw or Eagle Talon? Whatever is happening he has poor technique. Maybe a week on Mr Han’s island would serve him well. YAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Mac is right from last night thread, A’s kicked angel’s ass down there. Each of last couple nights I watched about as much fosse as I could handle while A’s scored in bunches and thrashed them

Astros scored 24 runs in two games and they and the equally less than powerful Mariners hit 13 HRs in two night games up there with fences moved in. Sounds like a yard tailor made for the A’s, who K a ton but are hitting bombs and scoring lots of runs. I think the M’s, like Pads and Mets, are gonna regret moving fences in.

What was the weather like in the Windy yesterday? Supposed to snow today…

I’m worried about the Giants playing 4 games in high 30’s temps. Muscle pulls are inevitable.

The situation made throwing at Quentin pretty stupid, and Quentin does invite it- he makes no effort to avoid the pitch, and seems to maybe even “ask for it”. He says Greinke said something-which Greinke denies. My take is Greinke wasn’t trying to hit him, Quentin (given his history) let the pitch hit him, turning his shoulder to minimize any possible injury, and then Greinke *did* say something- something about Quentin trying to get hit…
Anyway, that’s my educated guess based on the situation..
One question- there must be a way to blame this on the Hairston clan and have the whole family banned before we’re hurt again. BTW- Jerry is the Dodger- he has never homered against us. Scott is the one with the Cubs- he has hit 14 of his 96 career HRs against us. That’s if you believe the Warren Commission report on this.
In fact, there are 2 Jerry Hairstons, Scott, 2 Johns, 2 Sams, Brandon, Butch, Don, Jack, Jason, Jeffrey,Justin, Legare, Richard, Rodd, Tim, William, Hal, Napoleon, and 2 J.B.s…
Here, “Scott” rounds the bases while Marco eyes him suspiciously. When asked, Scooter pleaded “Nada de inglés”…

and another thing, Two-trips is being a little be-atch by suggesting Quentin should be suspended for as long as it takes Grienke to come back. Grienke idiotically absorbed the onrushing blow of a 250 pound man traveling with a full head of steam. He deserved a broken collarbone AT THE VERY LEAST for that dumb fuck move.

  8. xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 12, 2013 at 9:48 am

AJ Ellis should get some sort of kangaroo court punishment for not stepping onto the IF immediately. He waited to see what Quentin was going to do and then it was too late to stop him. Who was it, Whitey, who shut down a potential mound charge for the Giants a couple of years back? Now that was a good defensive catcher’s move.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 12, 2013 at 11:48 am

I thought the exact same thing. Catcher fail, big time, costing the team their top RHer and about, oh, a dozen of his starts at $750K per …

That first pic is hilarious. Grienke must think that 1 broken collarbone = 2 family jewels.

Guys, I understand Dodger hate, but this is on Quentin. Ask Vogelsong about him.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2013 at 10:10 am

Yeah, I was gonna say that. The catcher and the ump both pretty much let CQ go. Then again, the situation obviously wasn’t one where you’d think the pitcher was gong after someone, or that the batter would go after him. These guys may have a history, but it was 2009 the last time Grienke hit CQ. And CQ is the most-HBP guy in the league right now. He dives at shit all the time.

If I was Grienke, I would have dove at his knees. If he’s trying to kill me, I’m taking his knees out. Running would have been bad form, but shit, you’d still be pitching.

Yeah, through all this, the first thing I thought was that this would be a rallying cry for the Dogs.

  13. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 12, 2013 at 10:20 am

Hard to imagine that Grienke would be trying to hit him in that situation, but with the history between these two dickwads…who knows. Fuck both of ’em. And Two-Trips is tripping if he seriously thinks Q will be suspended for as long as Grienke is out (estimated two months).

Too bad that was the last game of the series…would have been fun to see what would have transpired if they played again today.

  14. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 12, 2013 at 10:37 am

Mattingly said Quentin *should* be suspended for as long as Greinke was out, I don’t think he thought he would be. At least that’s what I understood. I don’t blame him at all for being pissed. Any manager would be.. they play again Tuesday in LA. I imagine Quentin will be be suspended for the series, but it’s a pretty good bet someone will go down..

  15. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on April 12, 2013 at 11:15 am

Quentin is the guy I wanted on the Giants for a couple of years, so would that not be something if we try and get him later in the year. He has earned some Giant stripes now.

All the Dodger fans are crying like Mattingly that quentin should be suspended for as long as greinke is hurt. And I don’t think he threw an intentional pitch, he clearly had something to say to quentin and that is what triggered the fight. After he got it, I don’t think he was thinking about charging the mound, but that pipsquek spoke up and it was on…looks like more went on off the field than on the field in terms of a real fight…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 12, 2013 at 11:21 am

Well, he won’t be but should be suspended for as long as Greinke is out. That should be the standard.

        That’s absurd.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 12, 2013 at 11:52 am

What’s absurd is the bullshit that Greinke desreved his injury- like when you said Coolbaugh (the coach who was killed by the foul ball) desereved it because he wasn’t paying attention. I’ll just figure that you couldn’t possibly mean that stuff.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 12, 2013 at 11:54 am

I’m not sure about this situation, but in hockey, I definitely would apply that standard to these devastating, blind-side type goon hits and slashing by sticks, etc., that off the ice would be criminal battery. If the victim is out for a year, or his career is ended, the perp is out for the same period…

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on April 12, 2013 at 12:08 pm

Snaark, I totally agree with the hockey bit. These guys slash someone from behind or smash them into the boards when they’re not looking. that’s not hockey, that’s criminal. and yes, if they don’t go directly to jail they shouldn’t be allowed back until the other guy heals. and if he doesn’t, oh well. it’s only that kind of message that will get through to these fools. As for Quentin, i can see it apply here. just because you got hbp you don’t get to assualt the pitcher. OH, he SAID something to you? grow a hair.

Maybe Greinke and Quentin actually had an illicit sexual affair going on, and this was how a jilted lover was reacting. Before I get accused of homophobia: au contraire, I am trying to put this in the most modern of settings. This would be the polar opposite of homophobia. I’m open to anything as to why ZG used the Gonad Crush. Maybe it’s Shakespearean, when they yell, “Basta!” and have a swashbuckling fight on stage.

CQ was paying back ZG for hitting him in the past AND for Grienke talking shit to him BEFORE he came out there. And it was Grienke’s failed evasion to an onrushing Quentin that earned him that broken collarbone. Fuck Grienke, he got off light.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 12, 2013 at 12:34 pm

The good news is SF is showing a propensity for comebacks. Playoff veteran clubs tend to do that. You’re going to have blown saves, so the question now is how Romo does next time, and whether Bochy will change how much/often he uses him. He wasn’t dominating the batters this outing…

Romo’s 6-1 in save opps so far. Multiply x 7 yields 42-7, which would be very good, but could improve by a coupla saves to be elite. Too early to conclude how Romo’s going to do and how his arm will handle the abuse. He’s using a change-up and I think a cutter (could be another pitch) this season to break up all the sliders, that should help preserve the arm, and keep the batters guessing more than just the fastball / slider combo…

I don’t care if CQ has been hit 126 times or whatever it is. We know he was hit by ZG 3 times and we don’t know the circumstances of the other 2. We also don’t know what Greinke said to him. Does anyone know how many times he’s charged the mound? Is he going after every single pitcher who hits him? Of course not. I fully support Quentin going after the pitcher for whatever vendetta he was settling. That’s part of the game, always has been always will be. The fact that the Dodgers lost their 2nd best starter because of it only adds to my glee.

  49. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on April 12, 2013 at 6:41 pm

All though Romo blew the save and Pagan started looking like Candy Maldonado in the ninth Cain pitched a y good game, the team fought back in the ninth and Belt’s two out RBI hit was a slump buster type hit.

Grienke and Carlos Quentin? Maybe it was a Jose Mesa, Omar kind of thing,
“Even my little boy told me to get him. If I face him 10 more times, I’ll hit him 10 times. I want to kill him.” – Mesa
Although I don’t recall Mesa going to a full count before hitting Omar.

I don’t know, Grienke is kind of different and not all in a bad way. When he said he signed with the Dodgers because they offered him more money, well I appreciated the honesty. Although, if I was Colletti I’d be a bit concerned that Grienke doesn’t mind making that money being on the DL. And if that’s the case, I’m in total agreement with the Zackster, because I sure as hell don’t mind him making that money being on the DL.

    2. Switch to the FM sports station, and pre-game A’s has Ray Fosse just DRONING on and on — makes me want to stick knitting needles in my ears.
I’ll have a Makers on ice, that’ll oil the cheffing along, with a Van Morrison CD…

I didn’t think Romo pitched all that badly today. A couple of those balls were windblown Wrigley Field specials, IMO.
As for Greinke and Quentin? It seems like a couple of dooosh-bags engaging in some dooosh-baggery. I don’t know what the heck Greinke’s thinking trying to absorb the force of Quentin running out to him. There shan’t be any pitchers trying that tactic again. And I’m going to guess that if a pitcher stares down a batter after hitting him, and says something towards the batter, it’s going to escalate things, a la Jonathan Sanchez in the playoff series against the Phillies. One of those “unwritten rules.”

There’s nothing in the situation to support the notion that Greinke was throwing at him . As another FanGraph’s writer ( Jack Moore) says in closing his piece:
“As is — and I’ve done the homework — Quentin’s actions not only appear malicious, but completely unjustified as well.”

  64. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on April 12, 2013 at 9:31 pm

I have just one little problem with all of the experts and commentators saying that anyone who thinks Greinke was trying to hit Quentin in that situation just doesn’t understand baseball. Of course in a close game, protecting a 1-run lead, you don’t want to unnecessarily put runners on base. But here’s my problem with it — I don’t think he was actually trying to hit Quentin, but I do think he was throwing a brush back pitch, to sort of match that pitch to Kemp earlier. Greinke is too good to throw that “bad” a pitch on a 3-2 count. It looked purposeful — as a brush back, not a HBP — but it would still result in the batter going to first base. So all this blah blah blah about it not being a situation to hit someone, that could well just be Greinke’s cover: “Why would I want to hit someone in a close game?”, etc. Well… why would you throw so far inside to Quentin, knowing full well his approach to batting, and knowing that it would be ball 4? Sometimes players do things that don’t seem like the smart thing to do, but there are other things going on, and they make the call.

I’m not blaming Greinke; Quentin charging the mound was wrong. But it’s very possible Greinke baited him… The whole thing is actually very interesting, it’s just unfortunate it resulted in someone getting hurt. And it is going to simmer well into the summer inside the NL West….

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 12, 2013 at 9:36 pm

close game, put the guy on 1B for free? If so, Greinke’s one shitty $147M pitcher. But it’s possible.

  65. xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 12, 2013 at 9:31 pm

In that situation Greinke couldn’t possibly have wanted to drill Quentin. Still, Quentin got hit; he was pissed. So his first angry shout is understandable. But if he’d simply fucked up, why did Greinke shout back? He should’ve shaken his head and walked it off, like a pitcher who’d just fucked up. Instead, he enjoyed the plunking after the fact. Why? The history between the two. And then our hero Zack got his ass whipped.

15 game suspension for Quentin. None for Greinke, who’ll be out for at least 2 months anyway. Kemp gets a warning of some kind, which he will ignore. The deterioration of the dodgers season may have begun. We’ll see.

It’s laughable how hard the refs are working to help the Lakers win this game to help get into the playoffs. Stern must have issued a voice memo to make it happen…

  67. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on April 12, 2013 at 9:55 pm

I don’t know, Xoot, it just seemed possible Greinke made that decision. Sometimes “star” pitchers get arrogant. Think Cliff Lee, game 5 in 2010, pitching to Renteria with 1st base open and Rowand on deck. “Ah, it’s only Renteria, I’m not “giving in” to that guy”… Considering the bad blood between the two, it’s possible Greinke was willing to let his ego get in the way and accept a trade-off of putting a runner on base in a close game just for the opportunity to piss off Quentin. We’ll likely never know. I’m just already tired of all the talking-heads spouting off that anyone who thinks Greinke did *something* on purpose doesn’t understand baseball.

And you’re right: could hasten the deterioration of the Dodgers… but as several here have said, could also unify them and get them on a roll. It will be up to them how they deal with this.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 12, 2013 at 10:16 pm

Well, it doesn’t make sense that Greinke was throwing at him. After 4 years? Their last “episode” was April 8, 2009. The other HBP was in 2008. Greinke faced him 7 more times in 2009 after the April 8, 2009 meeting and 7 more in 2010. The last AB by Q in in 2009 was a HR.
But Greinke waited until this situation to hit him intentionally? I think not.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 12, 2013 at 10:41 pm

It shows that something is simmering between Q’s ears, maybe pudding. Why would Greinke pass up 14 ABs against Q in 2009 and 2010 if there was all this history that Q claims was the reason for the HBP? It makes zero sense. The last AB Q had against Greinke in 2009 was a HR. And Zack never went after him in 2010?
But whatever, my defending Greinke has cost me my status as one of Craig’s “stable boys”, as he’s stripped me of that tonight. It’s too bad that the benchmark for blame is the color of the player’s uniform.

    • paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on April 12, 2013 at 10:21 pm

I don’t think he hit him intentionally. But a purpose pitch brush back, to “retaliate” for the Kemp thing earlier, seems very possible (IMO), even if it meant putting Quentin on base. Too bad the whole skirmish happened after the pitch, it shouldn’t have. But it just shows that something is still simmering between the two.

  68. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 12, 2013 at 10:03 pm

Why won’t Q say what Greinke said? And don’t say it doesn’t matter. Since it’s dumbfuck’s ( Stanford? Have you listened to this moron? Maybe he started on the thorazine later ) position that he only charged the mound because Greinke said something, why in the world wouldn’t he say what was? It would support his reason for charging the mound- or NOT.
Look, even though he hadn’t charged the mound before, Q has demonstrated his ill temper before . And what was this retaliation for? Being hit 4 fucking years ago…please.

    • paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on April 12, 2013 at 10:42 pm

Right, that’s what I thought. That pitch clearly looked to have gotten away from the pitcher, you can tell by the delivery and follow-through. But it could’ve been simmering in Kemp’s mind throughout the game. I can well imagine him sitting in the dugout jib-jabbing about it, prompting a particular pitcher to think Kemp wanted some kind of retaliation. I can think of no other explanation why Kemp was the one who seemed most upset about the whole thing….

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 12, 2013 at 10:56 pm

Paul, you’re doing a lot of imagining about what *might* have caused Greinke to do something it made no sense for him to do. Your theory makes a heck of lot less sense than that that Greinke wasn’t throwing at him.

One thing it might also do: reduce the intensity of Giants/Dogs rivalry. There’s a new villain in the NL West in LA’s mind now…

  74. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 12, 2013 at 11:23 pm

If Greinke had kept his yap shut, nothing would have happened. It’s clear from the replay that Quentin was going to do the usual posturing batters do, and then head to firstbase. He does a kind of double-take when he sees Greinke say something. And that’s enough to escalate things. And then Greinke’s attempt to go “battering ram” with Quentin is so ridiculously misguided, that there is some humor in it. He’ll be remembered for this like Ventura will be remembered for his ill-advised trip to the mound to confront Nolan Ryan.
