A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Weird, Wild, Welcomed Weekend

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 15, 2013

We took 3 of 4 from the Cubs. They gave us a couple of those. The Cubs are truly an awful baseball team. Between the errors, the walks, the mind blowing number of wild pitches and passed balls, it only seems right that we would win yesterday’s game because of a balk.

If you haven’t heard the Kuip or Miller calls of Pence’s game tying bomb, take the time to. Goose pimple stuff, especially Miller’s….

I can’t get over how many Giants fans there are at these road games. LA or Sand Diego, i get it. But Chicago? I guess they are the trendy team to root for with the 2 world titles in 3 years. How far has this fan base come since the days of Barry Bonds? We went from one of the most hated teams to one of the most loved.

Day off today. Dark day. I hate these days. How do we ever get through 5 months of days like these?

    I believe the BBOTD helped.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 15, 2013 at 9:08 am

      I agree re: the BBOTD…

Great weekend of Giants baseball. Was busy as hell…competing with the dogs, etc. I did hear Miller’s call yesterday, but have not heard Kuip’s…anyone have that audio?

Caught up on the weekend comments. Breakfast both days for me was peppered thick-cut bacon, with a couple of eggs over medium. Had a potato fried-up yesterday, too.

      Damn, I hate off days.

And look, I know the Braves brought together the Upton bros…but what the hell is in the water in Atlanta??? Swept the Nats, jeez, the Braves are killing it.

As BP’s Hit List notes- pretty impressive leading your division with just a +7 run differential.”Pythagoras would be impressed…”
And as Pav says “All is okay with the Giants record right now, even though they haven’t played all that well. Buster Posey is slugging .333 and Matt Cain and Ryan Vogelsong have ERA’s above 5.00… ”
and Belt is struggling, all 3 LH relievers are sucking, Timmy is still the 2011 Timmy so far..
So how are we 9-4? Bunny Hop Balks help and there’s no doubt we’ve been lucky..
But Zito is having his customary lights out April, Bum has been solid, Romo and Casilla are putting out fires, “Captain Underpants”, Panda, Crawford, and Pagan, Zito 😉 have led a pretty good offense… Crawford is the 2 week MVP..
So how might this shake out now that we’ve faced the complimentary AAA team that MLB generously included on our schedule? Short answer: no way to know. We can feel pretty certain that Matt and Buster will break out, but there are enough questions that remain unanswered that which way it goes from here on out is very much a coin flip.
We need 4 reliable starting pitchers- right now we have two you would wager on to win a game. Our first baseman has to hit better than Barry Zito. Our loogies have to start getting people out ( don’t be surprised to see Mijares out and Runzler up soon), Romo has given pause to any notion that he’s the guy to close- he’s been totally raked his last 2 outings. The LF platoon has been OK- but still iffy going forward- we could still see the current two or one of several others manning that spot before the year is out. And we need a back up catcher who can, you know- catch.
This is a doable list but we’re in a tough division and we can’t rely on balks and wild pitches to hand us victories. We’ve been given the gift of a division lead while really playing .500 ball, if we’re to maintain our lead, we really do need to play better.

flav, hope you enjoyed watching Kuroda wipe out the O’s last night. I was listening to miller and flem during Lincecum’s first inning yesterday so I didn’t see him pitch at all, but what a contrast btw someone who knows what they are doing and can put the ball where he wants to, and the opposite. TL’s admission about not being focused enough in the first (on the cbs game column) is just odd. Flem said the HR by Castro might have been on a pitch that wasn’t even a strike but up in the zone, and Miller said nate looked like he was sitting on the change and hammered it out the yard Into the wind.
Both mentioned how bochy strategy backfired on him with the intentional walk. Affeldt threw 16 pitches total and only 4 were strikes, and miller could not believe he didn’t throw to third to get an easy out on the bunt. He also said SF might even have turned a DP on Nate.
But hey lotta heroes offensively during the series, and they finally got a big HR after Cubs had hit all the bombs. More bad weather predicted in Milwaukee, so I hope they get these games in. brewers have an even worse record than the Cubs and are 1-5 at home after dropping opening series vs. Rox and DBax.

Miller Park has a roof, so weather is not an issue the way it was at Wrigley.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 15, 2013 at 11:37 am

It’s a toss up on whether the Brewers or Cubs are worse. But Miller Park has the great bratwurst and Front Row Amy. Mikey Roy sez check it out .

Stragegy backfiring doesn’t make the stragegy bad.
Kuroda was great- bad news for the Yanks is that he’s their top young pitching prospect.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 15, 2013 at 10:01 am

Screen link to youtube ads, with the links changing to different ads every time you log in, with the ad screen right below the thread text. Saw it three times this morning. Wasn’t there this time…

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 15, 2013 at 10:24 am

Since you a writer and presumably don’t have a *paid* WordPress account, you are probably seeing ads because when you log in you are seen as a free account. And according to WP “The only way to get rid of all advertising on our free hosted WordPress.com blogs is to purchase an annually renewable No-Ads upgrade.”
Now I don’t have a paid account either but I’m always logged in and have quite a bit of anti-ad,pop-up blockers, and anti-spyware running. Don’t know if this helps or not. Staying logged in might help.

It’s not a big issue, it happens on an irregular basis, at least for now, anyway. I did click on the “what’s this ad” link and got the low down on the “pay for the ads to go away” deal…

From reading the Flap comments, it seems that we are overcoming lackluster pitching and still winning. In my opinion, that’s a good trend (insofar as the Giants showing their NO QUIT attitude). Still way early, so I am not even worried about the pitching of Lincecum.

New post on my blog. Hope all of you are well. 🙂

I haven’t been disappointed with the pitching. Cain had that one atrocious inning. Zito and Bumgarner have been brilliant. Timmy is pitching a lot like he did last year so if you got used to that his 2013 performance shouldn’t be a surprise. Voggy has been worse than I thought he would be.
      The bullpen has been brilliant.

Looking at the bet Loo threw out there: “What are the chances Posey, Belt, Panda and Pence combine for 100 HR’s?” Through 13 games they have a combined 6. Pence is really the only one pulling his weight. In fact, he’s carrying the 4-some. The other 3 better pick up the pace, 6 through 13 gets you to around 72 for the year…….

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 15, 2013 at 1:39 pm

Well, Pablo is “on pace” for about 25 and over 100 RBIs. It’s easy to forget we’re only 1/2 way through April.

  14. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 15, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Seems to me 9-4 is very good, considering that other than stellar defense, the pitching and offense have been up and down. Playing some bad teams (Rocks and Cubs) has helped. Too early to draw any conclusions from anything so far, other than the team is veteran and looks to have a good mental approach, as usual, in close games…

I’m reading on the Web that the cops are thinking these are homemade bombs. Who knows what kind of whackjob(s) are involved in this outrage. Pretty soon, we’re going to have to be frisked and MRI’d before coming into the ballpark or the mall, not just into the airport gate area. Putting bombs right near the finish line indicates a depraved mind(s) that wanted to cause the most death and destruction possible. Like Newtown, regardless of who is responsible, this stuff just makes my blood boil for the violence and hate going on in this country…
