A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Thank You Anna!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 1, 2013

One of the best things about mlb.com, and its awesomeness is hard to measure, is their “Must C” videos. You get the tv call and the radio call of the play. The only bummer about this one is that you don’t get the muted, sad-sack call from the AZ broadcast. Sometimes they include that, too. I never get tired of hearing a Kuip or Miller HR call, especially one as important as last night’s:

Some scribes are giving Hunter Pence credit for whispering into the ear of Pablo Sandoval in the on deck circle. Yeah, right. Flap vets know where to attribute the REAL credit for that game winning bomb: Mass kudos to Anna the Slutty Real Estate Agent who is now riding a 10 game Giants win streak (8 to end last year and both of these games in Arizona).

So she’s gonna stick around till we lose……

I get the home team feed when I watch the games on MLB.com. Before Panda hit the HR, Brenly and whoever else AZ has in the booth, were making fun of Pablo’s weight. Although right before he hit it, Brenly made a comment of not giving him a fast ball (Putz didn’t) because he could hit it deep (or something like that). Panda made em pay.

It appears Anna has been making the rounds down San Jose way. Devin Harris, six HRs in six games.

If Sando is in the LU, that tells me all I need to know about what kind of shape Bochy thinks he is in, and that’s the only one that matters.
He hustles his butt off and takes on railings chasing foul pops for his team, while smashing baseballs up the middle and out the yard. The what kind of shape is he in stuff is way tired.
And if Brenly could have hit like that, his broadcasting career might have started 10 yrs later than it did.

Nice win last night. I sure am glad I didn’t book the Big Flavor stone cold locks going into ths series :).

With the bat flip after launching his monster blast and then the discount double check as he crossed home plate Sandoval is getting a little bit of arrogance about him. I kind of like it.

Nip, despite there being 50 HRs hit yesterday and a combined total of 167 runs scored in the 16 games played, there were 3 separate 2-1 games, and all in the NL. Just say no to the DH!

  9. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 1, 2013 at 8:51 am

Sandoval now has 4 HRs and 22 rbis (no one else has more than 14) and is hitting .333 (no other regular is within 40 points of him). He’s off to a great start so imo whatever diet and training method he is on is working just fine.
Great column by Shea today in the Chron on Gaylord Perry and the Giants/Mets game from ’64 that went 23 innings, with Perry going 10 innings in relief and Mays playing 3 innings at SS. I remember listening to that one on radio as a kid, second game of a DH that day.

Just want to mention something about that A’s/ Mets 19and inning marathon the other day.
I don’t usually give props to an opponent other then are boys, but I have to give huge props to Mets catcher Chris Ianneta catching all 19 innings. That is a major stud accomplishment.8 pitchers squatting for close to 6hrs behind the dish over close to 600 pitches combined.
Even a Double Header if you catch both games there is a break between games, not this one and he threw in an extra inning to boot!!This Bud,s for you Chris and a major whirlpool.

Casilla’s fat FB in the 8th was deflating, and Pablo’s blast in the 9th elating. How often will the the offense make up for the pitching this year? Looks like a pattern. For those of you who study fangraphs, etc., can you explain how Pablo’s current OPS of .861 squares with his WAR of 1.1? That didn’t look like a 1.1 guy playing last night.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 1, 2013 at 11:48 am

I’m not a big WAR fan. I think that stat needs some serious re-tooling. It factors defense too heavily (and for fantasy players, that’s worthless)

The bottom line regarding Pablo is that it’s his life. I know what late nights, drinking and eating can do to ya and it aint pretty. At one point, I was 225lbs, sweating like a butcher, drinking to excess, fucking everything that moved, had a shitty diet and doing every frickin’ drug on the planet. In short, burning both ends of the candle. I’m not saying Pablo is heading in that direction. Not at all. However, I hung with people that lived a very, very, very fast lifestyle and believe me, you can get caught in the maelstrom. I almost did. Pablo has access and exposure to those types of people. He travels frequently, which is another negative where you can get in much trouble. Frankly, I am amazed at how disciplined most ball players are. We ONLY read about bad shit happening every week or so. When you think about it, that’s an outstanding record, considering how many athletes (in all sports) are out there.

Anywho, I hope Pablo sees the light and starts being more disciplined about his life. He already recognizes the need to change. Now, he needs to do it.

New post on my blog about Lucca, Italy. Birthplace of Leo Nomellini and Giacomo Pucchini. Shit, I thought it was the birthplace of Lucca Brasi.

Good points about fast living Blade. I can’t remember who wrote it (Flavor maybe) but we’ll probaly see Sandoval get serious around the time of his next contract year. It is too bad because as you say he seems to realize the need to be fit. Unfirtunately he’s selling himself, his teammates and his fans short. I think with his talent he could go down as an all time player. I sure enjoy watching him.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 1, 2013 at 1:48 pm

Me too. I have rarely seen some one that large in baseball move as quickly as he does. No doubt about it, he is an excellent athlete. I would love to see him slim down and reach his full potential, but that’s his call and no one harping about it can make him do it. Nevertheless, there is still something called “tough love” that sometimes works with drug addicts, alcoholics, etc. Basically, management has to draw clear lines in the sand and not equivocate from those boundaries. It’s the same thing that a family does when their son or daughter is going down the wrong path, e.g., you live under our roof, you go by our rules. Actually, the Giants should speak to someone in Pablo’s inner circle (family or friend) that he considers a mentor or equal – gain their trust (without paying them. Shit, if they love Pablo, they will do it for love, not money) and see if they can assist in helping Pablo change his diet. That being said – again, it’s up to Pablo. No one can change anyone, unless the person wants to change.

Well, not to be the devil’s advocate, but really, can you quantify how much better Pablo would do given a ‘healthier’ lifestyle? I think at this point, it is moot. In 5 years it may matter. As of now, probably not. He’s not a base stealer, he’s quick to hard hit balls at 3rd, his range is decent, and he’s a power guy. None of this is greatly diminished by his weight. As of now.

As far as feeling the effects of a not-so-shining-example-of-living-a-clean-life goes, well, some can take it for longer than others. Granted, I’m toast at 52, but what the hell? I had fun while it lasted . . .

I gotta go to MLB and see that clip; just watched Pablo interview via Baggs. He’s smart, articulate, sincere — in my view. And a total team player. New subject: Had a nice 84-mile drive to Cooperstown today. Spurned the HOF. got my baseball books into The Book Nook, a store about two doors down. (Connected to F.R. Wood, open since 1947.) They happily will let me do a signing June 22-23, Giants weekend. Reserved a room at the motel upstairs. One store owner lamented that the Hall does little to help the local merchants. He didn’t even know about the Giants weekend but said it will make no difference to his sales. The Hall doesn’t really interact with the town, almost like a town vs. gown mentality. He said the HOF should have a parade with the trophy, and play a game with ex-Giants at Doubleday Field. (Will Clark will be in town, he said.) I stepped onto Doubleday Field and talked with the guy mowing the grass; he said the field gets rented out every day in season. Bought a Giants pullover, black — one of those workout type things, and SF knitted bracelets for wife and daughter. Lunch of scrambled eggs, home fries, sausage, toast, coffee at the cordial Cooperstown diner on a sleepy balmy day. The batting cages were closed. I would’ve hit some. A lot of Orioles fans in town. I amiably told them they at least had the right colors. Great coconut macaroons at The Bakery. Had to buy one for the road.

      • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on May 1, 2013 at 7:09 pm

Don’t know much about it except that the WS Trophy will be at the Hall of Fame. I won’t go in. Finnerty’s was fine. In 2011 it was a cool thing when the Hall had a similar event. We were there the day after Mays’s 80th. Met Dennis Z. and others. My memory tells me on the night of Mays’s 80th the Giants had a walkoff win at home against the Rockies. Either Nate or Franchez had the hit. It might’ve even been the game Franchez hurt his shoulder, tho’ I may be conflating two events.
