Chad Gaudin Day
Thank God, it’s Chad Gaudin Day. The sinking ship he rights every fifth day (well, it used to be in long relief but whatever). It also used to be Β (uh, like a week ago) that a Gaudin start meant a certain victory to stop a string of underwhelming pitching performances. But all that’s changed. We’ve got two starts in a row that saw Cain and Bum at their finest. The Giants haven’t give up a run in 18 innings and with The Great Gaudin taking the mound today we can probably mail in another shutout, right?
Honestly, I can’t figure this Gaudin thing out. Nothing about his career suggests he should be anywhere close to 2.32ERA/1.12WHIP. He says he’s *attacking the zone*. In past years, that would have hitters salivating. This year? Not so much. So what’s he doing to support this unexpected chain of success?
Pfffftttt. Nothing? Is that a good enough answer? He’s walking less hitters and giving up less hits per 9/innings but his pitch selection looks about the same. One interesting thing about Gaudin is that he’s throwing harder now than he did when he was younger. His fastball has about 2mph more on it than it did when he first came into the league. (Timmy looks longingly in the direction of Gaudin….)
So maybe attacking the zone with one of the best fastballs of your career IS a good thing. Pitching at AT&T probably helps too. Hey, I think half the league is on steroids so don’t rag on me for suggesting Gaudin is as well. So that’s what I’m going with. The juice. Anyone got a better answer?

I’m going with the fuller beard. Although, that goat he wore when he was with the Cubs was pretty impressive, I’m not sure why he didn’t dominate with that thing.
I forgot to add, his wife is a hot piece of ass. Not sure when they got married but that could be it, too.
Good point.
Magic underwear?
Ted!
Mmmm having the D at its best is going to help Gaudin quite a bit–guys do hit shots off him. As I said yesterday, I’m with Twin on this–the team better hit. The B LU has scored 18 runs in two games, which might be enough to win road games with Zito and Lincecum.
Meanwhile, what’s with the Braves? In a division where Nats are playing .500 ball and everyone else is much worse, suddenly they are straining big time.
Couldn’t help noticing the day Cain dominated on anniversary of the perfecto was same day the Yanks had to set some kind of records for futility vs. A’s (listened to G Kuip and Fosse drone on about it last night). Cano was 3 for 5 with 2 BBs and the 2 run bomb that accounted for all their scoring, in first inning. Guys behind him–Hafner, Youk, Wells and Tex—went 0 for 28 with 12 Ks. 28 ABs without a hit? That’s a freaking no no and one.
The Braves have hit Gaudin pretty hard throughout his career, it should be an interesting game today.
blogger on cbs site said Braves have beaten up on crummy pitching to pad stats. J Upton is down to .250, which is about 90 points better than B J (flems on radio mentioned how you could hear the boos from crowd after he grounded out vs. Rosario). Blade posted before about their lack of offense. Like my mentor said, when you got em by cojones, you gotta squeeze. See who squeezes whom today.
Atlanta is leading the NL in Ks and they are second to the Stros for all of baseball. Dem is some free swingers, for sure.
There isn’t an explanation- it’s just something that happens every once in awhile and you close your eyes and hope it continues. Sometimes it does, most times it doesn’t. The hot wife *could* be a factor. He’s on thin ice the second he’s done as a big leaguer… we definitely know the babe will be the one looking for the upgrade…the Bleacher Report is not exactly known for quality sports writing but they stumbled upon a keeper with the mean SOB who wrote this truism “Syndal Gorden Remains Only Reason to Ever Know Chad Gaudin’s Name”…Ouch..

Here’s Chad wondering why her seat in the wive’s section is empty….again…
I concur. Once the skill is gone goodbye.
Timmy’s 29th bday today.
Brian Murphy on twitter calling Belt The Human Out. Brutal. And he’s been a huge supporter of him
Belt does field a lot better than Damon Minor, let’s not forget that. Looks like Bochy is saving his bat for a crucial PH situation today…
Murphy was referring to yesterday’s game but the Murph isn’t exactly who baseball fans go to for expert commentary…
1. Andres Torres (S) LF
2. Tony Abreu (S) 2B
3. Buster Posey (R) 1B
4. Hunter Pence (R) RF
5. Joaquin Arias (R) 3B
6. Juan Perez (R) CF
7. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
8. Guillermo Quiroz (R) C
9. Chad Gaudin (R) P
C Lineup is gonna rock!
(Or is this D lineup? I’ve lost track.)
It’s “D”. “The Human Out” sits for Quiroz who will go 2 for 4, natch.
Syndal Gorden sounds like a chick who should have been in Conan the Barbarian…
A starting lineup with Abreu, Perez, Quiroz and Gaudin. Sure, what the hell. Go Giants!
LOL
After today, we be calling Guillermo “Big Papi Puig”…
Gaudin needs to hook up with Rick Barry and Dr.Rossenelli for some hair plugs…
Nah. That wouldn’t be good for Syndal.
Bald heads are solar panels for a sex machine…
Stadium looks empty. Must not be a playoff game going on. π
Yeah Blade. Once again I blew off my friend’s invite to go to Atlanta for the series. I haven’t been to a Giants Braves series in Atlanta since 93, so maybe that’s a good thing. Although, if Bum had finished with a no no last night, I may have become ledge ready.
No idea what the weather is like today? Is it “Hot’lanta” or a bit cooler today?
84 degrees and cloudy, although it is hard to tell on radio
Damn. I was just about to smirk and make a comment about BJ’s propensity for strikeouts.
Do we have a guy that just walks by and soaks their players head with a cold wet towel?
does he have big shoes and a red nose?
Now that would be awesome.
Torres two out hitting.
Nice. Torres playing well.
Abreu two out hitting and getting the lead.
this is MY Giants team
woo hoo
Hey edd, besides the Giants, whats happening over your way tonight?
The sun just went down and the teens come out to play. I know this because I can hear the sheriff’s copter out over the big park near town centre. The warmup for Wimbledon is being played at Queens Court lawn tennis club with most of the big names and I watch some of that during the day. I belong to a book club, film club, badminton club and a rambling club where we go on 10 mile walks in the country. Summertime refuses to get serious, but lots of people are at the seaside anyway. August is when most families take their holiday trips. Lots of news out of America about some electronic snooping and protests in turkey? Every time I hear ‘turkey’ in the news I remember the WKRB Cincinnati show about them trying to give away turkeys for free. by helicopter and the turkeys were frozen. Mirth ensued. OH, and Neil Young is touring the UK, I was planning on going last Monday, but had to work. there was some PONO excitement when he had a meeting with a high-end audio manufacturer here. I also missed Steve Earle a month ago. Work sucks.
That was a great WKRP episode. Rambling club? Now that’s just gold, in my book.
Have you talked your local pub into showing the Giants on the tube?
Other than MLB.COM the games are just not available here. ESPN has a lot of games but not many of those are the SF team’s. We are not in the footprint of any US television satellites. It is rugby and cricket season though. It is very tough to even get bets down on US events and when you can the odds usually suck, nothing like vegas’ odds. ESPN will carry all the playoff-championship-ws games, so maybe then. Most, if not all, Brits do not understand the game and hence are not interested.
Pence makes em pay.
These Braves announcers are freaking on the Giants two out hitting. I love it,
Giants bats seem to be coming alive on this road trip, eh?
Since Minor and Medlen are both starters for my FL team, I wouldn’t have minded a few Braves errors to keep their ERAs down. But, I’ll take a Giants win over any FL points..
Yeah, I have Minor on my other FL team clown . . . I will eat the ERA and WHIP today, but no biggie.
Gaudin holding on with Baling wire and a prayer, just need three more innings out of him.
2nd basemen since Scooter went down:
7 for 17
Arias since Pablo went down:
11 for 29
That’s stepping up…(counting today)
Arias better get his act together . . . π
Keep em moving.
This definitely not the team that could not beat the Oakland As
Perez reminds me of Darren Ford.,. but he can hit a little.
I wonder if Estes is re-thinking his ” Pence is fastest on the team” (blown) call.
Simmons 2nd error of the day? “Thr best defensive ss in baseball” (according to uzr and other subjective metrics) is taking some hits today (reputation)
We’ve talked about UZR before , Fangraphs cautions it’s more reliable with 3 years of play to go by. The numbers are accumulated from play by play data.
Thought they should have done at least a safety squeeze with Quiroz. He’s a good bunter and with Perez at 3rd…?
Stow family emailed me this morning about yesterday’s post:
“9:33 AM (5 hours ago)
to me
Thank you so much for that! Although we are kind of embarrassed it seems we were asking for donations. It definitely wasn’t our intent. Our frustration definitely came out in this post. From it we have gotten quite a few emails from people with suggestions on where and how to get him the therapies he needs. Hoping at least one works out.
Anyways, thank you again for your support!!
Love, the Stow family”
you da man
well done, mate
That is awesome Flav.
very impressed
Same pitch he hit out earlier. Should have pulled him after 5.
Chad Gaudin is trying to tie up B.J. Upton with fastballs inside; Upton is hitting .296 on pitches in that location compared to .157 overall.
OOPS
ROMO
No torture
No torture
No torture
No torture
please
Shit! Just turned on the tube to watch the game. Bottom of the 9th, 5-4???
Sooooo, what’d I miss?
DP to no play
Thank God Torres didn’t go for that
Fuck. Perhaps I am prejudiced, but that looked like a strike.
The ump’s not giving him that frontdoor slider, and he keeps trying to get it.
I hate to say this but that umpire is not calling anything on the black, at lease 5 pitches by the pitch tracker on both sides
I really don’t think that pitch crossed the plate but I’ll wait to see the chart
I jinx my man romo
shite
(it wasn’t the error, this one is on me)
Romo jinxed himself by not pitching well.
Well, that sucked.
Arias turned the DP into nothing. Got to get one out on that.
We gave that away.
Send Pawlie Kokonuts back to the fucking ballet!!!!!!! π
Wasted a good game pitched by Gaudin, hopefully he still gets laid tonight.
I think I’ll logoff before the Nipper “Boo Hoo”.
Gaudin didn’t pitch well.
totally disagree. He didn’t pitch great but he’s not a great pitcher. Bochy should be trying to squeeze 5 innings out of this guy. He got that and sent him out there for more. That’s a fuck up by Bochy.
Well, you can’t say he pitched well, fergawdsake.Besides the 8 hits , he gave up several boomers. But fine, put it on Bochy. Estes and Papa agree.
BOO HOO!
Romo was too respectful of Gaddis. He pitched him like he was Babe Ruth. Yeah, it’s only a one-run lead and the guy has some pop, but there’s just no way you can walk him in that situation.
True.
disagree. Gattis is blasting everything he can reach out of the park. 14 bombs in 160 at bats? He’s a hacker. I know he’s got 13 walks too but that’s because EVERYONE is pitching him carefully. I thought he’d chase, I supported the careful approach. It didn’t work out. Gattis has 4 bombs in 8 PH at bats. In a 1-run game and 1 out, I’m fine with Romo passing on him. It’s not like he walked the lead off batter.
But Romo is a stud, putting Gattis on with one out should hardly be the end of the inning. Arias’ fuck up on the ensuing grounder was the major problem with that inning. And Upton got lucky as fuck that he coaxed that walk. He takes a dead-red fastball down the middle for a strike? What is he, a pussy? Swing the fucking bat. And then he lets what EASILY could have been called strike 3 go by. I still haven’t checked the chart and said at the time I thought it didn’t technically cross the plate. But Upton pussed out on both those pitches.
well, I do have the 3 stooges on dvd, maybe that will cheer me up?
And maybe the D-Backs lose. (grin)
I’m not certain, but didn’t one of the talking heads say that was the first time since the 2010 season that Romo had walked 2 batters in a row?
I agree with Z here. He acted like he wanted no part of Gaddis. It sounds terrible- but even a HR isn’t disaster there. There’s a diff between being careful and pitching scared. I thought Sergio pitched scared to Gaddis, IMO.
Romo managed to throw the perfect low slider for the second strike to Simmons right after Gaddis took his base. Why couldn’t he throw that pitch to the hulk? effing mysterey.
Dodgers closer blew a sure save too. Some consolation . . . sigh.
I guess Pawlie skipped the ballet.
They squeezed 6 out of Gaudin in his other starts. He was hit much harder today but pulling him after 5 probably means Dunning for one inning and I doubt that’s the spot Bochy wanted the guy to make his debut. BTW, I think I heard that Syndal was texting Freeman after the game π
Gaudin after his June 2nd start: Question: “Could you have gone past the 6th?” A: “No, I was gassed.” that was after 79 pitches. His June 9th start he went 84 pitches and 6 innings.
Today, he was at 79 pitches through 5 and he clearly was gutting this one out. It was idiotic to send him out for the 6th. A guy like Gaudin only has so many bullets, especially since this was only his third start of the season. Five innings should be all you’re looking to get out of him. 6 is fine if he’s pitching great. He was not pitching great today. He was pitching alright, laboring a little but still getting through 5 effectively.
The bullpen was in good shape, Bochy fucked up by sending Gaudin out for the 6th.
I think you are wrong but when it doesn’t work out, it’s tough to argue it.
Fuck, and now we have to deal with Timmy getting wasted tonight on his birthday. I hope they put a puke bag out there next to the rosin bag tomorrow…….
from the AP:
“Stanford clinched its 19th consecutive NCAA Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup as the top intercollegiate athletic department in the nation.
In the closest race of the 20-year-old program, the Cardinal collected 1,261.25 points — just 41.50 ahead of Florida. Stanford football’s Rose Bowl victory bolstered the department’s finish in a title chase that ultimately came down to the final weeks of the spring season. Strong showings in women’s tennis (national title) and women’s track & field (sixth-place finish) ensured the Cup would remain on The Farm for another year.
Cal is 17th with 858.83 points.
The final standings will be released after baseball’s College World Series.
Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports — 10 women’s and 10 men’s.”
____________
Cardinal……..
The top 3 teams (Snakes, GMen, and Sherpas) have all played 5-5 in their last 10 games. San Diego has impressed with a 7-3 record, with the Bums bringing up the rear at 4-6.
My dislike for the Sherpas knows no bounds and they are going on an extended critical road trip . . . It will be interesting to see if they can mirror what they have done thus far on the road, 14-16, which is excellent for them in lieu of their past road woes. Especially critical for them because they will be without their stud, Tulo and going into battle with a pitching staff that is showing cracks. Either Nicasio or Francis – probably the former – will be sent to the bullpen or minors to make way for their . . . get this – their savior, Roy Hob . . . Whoops, I mean Roy Oswalt.
Meanwhile, the Bums will have their stud, Matt Kemp returning June 24th. Will Kemp be Superman or Clark Kent? Stay tuned . . .
Giants play 15 games against the Bums, Rocks, and Padres between now and the All Star game, then have 3 more games against the Snakes immediately following the All Star game. Wow! Will something shake out, with one team taking a commanding lead? Or, will we have this “traffic jam” the entire season? No division is as tight as the NL West, especially the top 4 teams with only 4 games separating them. I LOVE THIS FUCKING SHIT!!!!!
I was marveling at the career of Henry Blanco the other day. Recently released by Toronto, he had signed on with Seattle marking the 11th different team of his career. He’s 41. And he is terrible. His career batting average is .226 with a .291 career OBP. Across a 16 year career, he’s appeared in 936 games. And he’s been in the big leagues every year since he first appeared in ’97 (drafted in ’89). How does he keep finding teams to employ him?
He just hit a grand slam off AJ Griffin to give the Mariners a 4-0 lead……
Oh, thank you Lord for not making Griffin waiver wire available until tomorrow . . . I was thinking about streaming that puke because ESPN rated him a 10 (highest rating) today and you saved my ERA and WHIP from attaining new levels of putrid mediocrity. Praise Ye Lord!
Amen! π
dude you might wanna give this *streaming* angle a rest. I don’t think it works, every day I see you lamenting a *streaming* move π
I appreciate playing in the NFBC where you can’t do that (and you can only set your LU once a week). It’s one of many reasons that it blows doors on espn or yahoo, you should try it next year…….
I disagree . . . Especially, if you are behind in Wins and SOs, obvious areas where that benefits someone who streams. Again, remember, we are playing within the context of rotisserie (not head to head). Couple that with Drew What and Sukiyaki Sauce having over 100-120 innings in the books already, I have a lot of catching up to do (because I was judicious with my pitching staff first part of the season, like most of us). Griffin is a good example – every FL site said he was a good lock today, with ESPN giving him a 10 rating. He would have been a good risk – it didn’t turn out that way, but still he was going against the frickin’ Mariners.
That being said, yeah, I want to play in NFBC next year, but it wouldn’t have worked out this year Flav for the reason that I missed the first month and a half of the season eating pasta and souffles in Rome and Paris. π
the reason streaming doesn’t work (and it doesn’t) is because in any competitive league like that the waiver wire has a bunch of #4 and #5’s on it. That’s why it’s a waiver wire. Yes, you might improve in K’s and get a win or two but most of those guys end up ruining your WHIP and ERA. You’re better off looking for hold guys with a high K rate who will get the vulture wins…….
Well, I disagree. You’re right with regard to most days, I wouldn’t touch these guys, but match ups come into play as well. Also, check out Griffin’s ERA and WHIP prior to today. It wasn’t astronomical at all. Anywho, agree to disagree . . .
looking forward to your next streamer who pans out. And because it’s easy to do, shoot a comment to the flap about it before he starts. π
by the way, Griffin was facing Felix Hernandez so how did that factor into the *match ups*? Or is that why you didn’t do it?
I can give you a half dozen right now that have panned out . . . Cole (two other leagues I am in), Cingrani, Wood, Pettitte, Garza (albeit, he was one out of two), Hughes . . . Go check out transactions in the Flap.
Flav, granted this isn’t head to head or a pay league, but my record in FL baseball is above 90%, with 3 championships and I will take another championship this season. Again, we will have to agree to disagree.
Read my initial post . . . He wasn’t available until tomorrow. Besides, Wins are mostly luck and you know that. Especially with Felix – who has a putrid lineup behind him.
Hey Blade, I “streamed” Griffin today, sort of. Needed a pitcher when Burnett hit the DL, so I picked up Griffin. This isn’t the first time, though, that I’ve gotten burned by one of the A’s pitchers. No matter, even between that and Romo’s loss, I’ll still win my matchup this week.
Marty Lurie said we should sign him after the Jays DFAed him…
What kind of contract offer would you guys be comfortable with the Giants offering Pence right now?
How about 5 yrs 90 mil?
Uhh. no. As in no way, no how.
If you want to see the guy in Orange and Black next year, I think the offer is going to have be in that general range.
Damn, I love Pence, but he is not worth $90 million for five years in my opinion. He’ll be 31 by the time the season starts next year. I could see a Rowand type deal for $60 million, but that’s about it. Alex Rios signed a seven-year contract with the Blue Jays in April 2008 for a guaranteed amount of $69,835,000. This guy is somewhat similar to Pence and he was 4-5 years younger when he signed that deal.
I’m off any 5 (or 5+) year deal for any free agent. It almost never works. I like Pence a lot but not enough to give him more than 2 years (which he obviously will beat somewhere).
The way to go is the draft and international signings couple with using your minor league talent as chips for players mid season (like Pence). If your foundation is solid you can fire those bullets year after year as long as you keep replenishing the system. And while the Giants aren’t ranked highly in minor league system ratings, they do have chips to trade this year.
Yup. Y’all guessed it. No ballet today. Was driving back. Maybe if I wore tights or pointe shoes while driving we would’ve won. My abject apologies. G’night, girls.
I’ll feel better about considering Pence when Pagan gets back starts making me less edgy about *his* deal. I know they’re not the same guy but there’s something about Sabean and his no limit credit card that makes him do things that don’t work out. We need to put a limit on the card and make him shop in the basement…
well, you’re hitting on tomorrow’s blog topic. It’s gonna have many targets, clean your scope tonight to prepare. π
Timmy’s hangover, Bochy pen management, “The Human Out”, Pa-Gone!…. close?
Kickham got blasted tonight- 8 H 7 R in 3 innings…
Funny thing is, standings-wise we are better off now than at the start of this trip . . .
Well, if they can pull it out tomorrow, it’s a winning trip. All things considered, that would be a fantastic roadie. Even 4-5 would be a good one…
It seems fitting that the Padres get to .500 just in time for Father’s Day.
I’m waiting for the next thread…….waiting….oops….4AM.
