A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Voggy!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 11, 2013

Vogelsong fell apart last night in the 5th inning and we are still in last place. Ugh. I didn’t pay attention to his velocity but 0 strike outs in 5 innings is not a good sign. At this point, I would pull the rip cord on Voggy’s season.  He’s pitched a couple of good games since he came back on August 9th that’s all I need to see to exercise his option next year. Again, if you’re paying Barry Zito 7 million to surf off into the sunset then you find the scratch to pay Vogelsong 6.5 million to pitch for us in 2014. You know he’ll work his ass off this Winter, that is a total guarantee.

Voggy got hurt this year and I think he probably tried to come back too soon at least in terms of coordinating his timing/velocity/game ready conditioning etc. And he’s such a serious dude he’s probably not handling these failures too well and that frustration is likely contributing to what we’re seeing now. No reason to keep running him out there with very little to gain except more mashed up nails in his mouth.

The one thing I’m not on board with: the theory that the WBC did this guy in. What is he, an 84 year old man? So what if he had to get his program going a little early? People are talking about all the WBC players who have gotten hurt but a lot of those injuries were freak injuries including Voggy’s broken finger.

Bottom line is that we’re shooting for 900 innings or so out of our starters next year. No one’s giving those innings away. Timmy, Voggy, Gaudin, Petit? Who are your ideas for filling out the back end of our rotation? Cain and MadBum barely make a line. We’ve got 3 massive holes to fill.

Here’s a guy I wouldn’t mind seeing surf with Zito next year: Jose Mijares. He sucks. Massively and badly. Turn him into kindling. Not me. But someone should…….

In the grand scheme of baseball contracts, $6.5 million scratch is comparable to having a bald tire repaired on your car. Give Voggy the money and be done with it.

OK, who else to add to the rotation? Hmm. Last week, I eviscerated Matt Garza, who will be a free agent after his “good/bad” season at Chicago and Texas. I dropped his sorry ass in all of my fantasy leagues. Fortunately for us, this might present an opportunity to grab his ass ala’ The Dollar Store. He has been putrid in the latter part of his season in Texas and I am betting that his free agent stock went south. This is similar to Apple’s stock going south yesterday and today, after the announcement of their plastic iPhone (5c). I say make an attempt to grab his ass as a free agent. He is a perfectly fine pitcher in the National League. After his harrowing experience in Texas and the American League, he will welcome a career move to the Phone Park in my opinion.

My argument against Vogs has less to do with the money than the product. His last 2 games went the same way–low velocity (85 on the fastball according to Henry) and a Zito like inning where he gets lit up.
Vs. AZ 5 hits and 1 walk 4 runs in the 5th inning alone
Bottom line on that start: 4 2/3, 8 hits 3 BBs 4 ER.
Last night: 5 IP, 8 hits, 2 BBs 5 ER. You guys add them up
These are freaking home games. The AZ game was the one where he walked willie bloomquist in front of Goldschmidt with 2 outs, then gave up consecutive doubles to him and Montero.
I’d agree it could be his arm is not healthy since he seems to be running out of gas around 60 pitches, but consider the chances he returns to 2012 form slim and none. His numbers for ERA, BA against and WHIP suck across the board–he started badly and isn’t finishing well either, unlike others.
Imo, he’s not part of the solution, but part of the problem.

Well i for one, maybe the only flapper,am not sold on Vogs return. He’s 36 lots of milelage on his arm.WBC should of been no excuse though,he only threw 9 1/3 innings total.Vogs looks done to me.,last 3 starts 15 innings 12 ER.he’s been dogshit all year, except for 2-3 starts.
Can see Sabean finally getting out of his loyalty role about players like Torres,Vogs etc,etc..as this year proved .Petit is auditioning for a spot right now,and it could be Vog.,He’s pitching great,he’s 8 years younger and he’s alot cheaper.

Lot of contract stuff in the air on the blogs. Pence continues to put up numbers, and hustles his butt off while playing every single day. One blogger I saw used the words “5/85.”
Hmmmn. Should SF have made better attempt to extend him earlier?
Baggs has a column on TL and Seattle, re: the qualifying offer and whether M’s (or Giants for that matter) would have final record that allows them to protect their first round pick in event they sign an FA with that offer that the player turned down.
Would the M’s tank? King Felix is having problems finishing the season. How much would they offer TL?
I read a story on MLBTR couple days ago about Braves not having enough $$$ to extend all their good young players, including a few pitchers, given what they owe likes of Uggla and the Uptons.
What would SF have to give up to get in on them?
I could certainly see Giants picking up Vogs option, figuring that 6 months off and in the TLC of Mrs. Vogs he could return to *gold* as a 4/5 guy next year. Not my cup of tea but as others have said, much uncertainty about SPs.
Let’s hope the Zum magic helps move SF closer to getting by Pads and Sherps before the LA/Big Apple trip.

first- i’m not going into why i think they should pick up vogelsong’s option, just that i think they will and i’m happy that they will..
should they have talked extension with pence earlier. well, depending on *exactly* when, we’d get about 50 different answers and most not fit for print, even here…they should try to re-sign him but his consistency year to year will work against us, he won’t go for 3 years, no chance. do my incredibly brilliant adam jones trade, sign mccann, and leave the other outfield corner spot to the first two kids who can spell ‘backfoot slider no-no” …
the reason they were hard line on lopez? easy call- unless a gm named goobs mcgoober gave them a mlb ready starting pitcher, they want to keep him. they *do* intend to be in the running next year again…
and they will if people just leave me and brian alone to make the moves needed 😉

I’m not sold at all on Voggy. In fact, I’m leaning way to the side of saying adios. He’s going on 37. Lot of mileage. He was sucking eggs last half of last season, and sucked this year before he broke his finger, except for the game in which he broke his finger. That’s about a full season of suckage. Similar to last night. All of a sudden, the wheels come off, and stay off. I want to see what Petit does his next 3 starts. I’m not sold on him, he’s a journeyman, pure and simple. So, to put him in the rotation is to believe he’s discovered something at a ripe age. But, he’s at least 6 years younger than Voggy, supposedly, so that’s something,. Gaudin seems to me still a middle guy, I see him breaking down 1/2 way through a season as a starter. I’d scour all the FA pitchers, and pick at least one from there (I haven’t looked at them). Then, pick among Voggy, Gaudin, Petit as the #5. If they can’t/won’t sign Tim, then its back to the FA market again. In any scenario, we’ve gone from starter rich to starter middle of the road, at best. As for the Pen, that’s another thread, and it needs lotsa work, starting with yes, the old heave ho on Mijares. The fact that $7million of next year’s salary has to go to Zito for a ridiculously expensive adios is painful, real painful. That could go a long way towards paying a decent left fielder…

I have to agree with snarkk on Vogey. I’m just not convinced he is a piece to the puzzle. The question becomes (as snarkk mentioned) what does Petit do the rest of the way? Is he a viable candidate for the 5 hole? And what is available in the FA market that would cost comparably to Vogey?

Definitely make a qualifying offer on Tim, and hope that he accepts (with hopes on his part that he can re-build his value next year and turn that into a lucrative multi-year contract).

Agree that the bullpen is a thread of and unto itself.

Bottom line, this team needs some pitching help. I suspect most of the action will be there, and that the starting line-up will be very similar to what we have now.

Flemm said Romo threw 23 pitches last night. Does a closer not close after 23 pitches the night before? Miller says Romo threw in each of the last 3 games, so he’s saying that’s probably why Romo’s not in there. Uh, ok. But, Romo went for days and days at a time this summer when he never pitched at all. I find it a bit strange. I’m definitely in the corner of those who would not be devastated if Romo were part of a trade to get a LFer in here…

a closer pitching 4 games in a row would be pretty unusual- without checking, that’s just my recollection, i don’t remember wilson doing it much.and i don’t see where his previous workload is relevant. it’s the strain on the arm from 4 consecutive games regardless of days off earlier in the year. imo.

After looking at the play-by-play, I was gonna ask if the final out really came on a bunt with a runner on 1st, but I see snarkk’s post, so I guess that’s how it ended. Very strange.

On the radio, Rockies fans are questioning that stupid Weiss move as well . . . Umm, what Rockies fans are left and haven’t completely switched to Bronco mode. It was also ridiculous of Weiss going to the “well” one too many times with Belisle. He’s allowed eight runs (six earned) on 14 hits over 4 ⅓ innings. His September ERA is 12.46. Weiss is getting exposed for the former high school manager he use to be – hardly a game goes by with him making 1-2 mistakes. Why he had his best base-runner (CarGo) run for Tulo in the 9th and not have him steal second is beyond me.
