Finnerty’s Rules
I discovered something completely awesome about being 17 games out of first place with 10 to play: I can watch the Giants blow a 3 run lead in the 9th, lose in galling fashion and not really sweat it too much. I guess being 56-2 after 8 innings isn’t worth as much as it once was….
I’ve only been half-way paying attention to this Finnerty’s phenomenon but the morning KNBR crew just interviewed a co-owner of the bar (Brian Stapleton) and it’s kinda blowing my mind how many Giants fans are going to these NY games via Finnerty’s. Five bus loads for EACH GAME? And even at 10am (EST) you could hear Finnerty’s rockin’ in the background of the KNBR feed. That bar is flowing freely with booze and good spirits before today’s game. Good times.
Of course, MacDog and Pawlie already made Finnerty’s *famous* here at the Flap and many of their pics were dumped into the Flap Photo Bucket long ago. Nice to see KNBR catching up with acknowledging that fantastic oasis for Bay Area sports fans….
Are any of you east coasters hitting any of these 6 NY games? Five bus loads of Giants fans for all 6 NY games. That is still blowing my mind……
I know…outside of the Giants not being in the pennant race, this would have been an awesome year to be back there…and to catch at least one of the games in each yard.
I heard the bit this morning on KNBR. Murph and Mac threw down $100 for drinks at Finnerty’s…that certainly lit the crowd up.
That would be so damned cool to be back there. Visiting NY and catching a few SF Giant games are on my bucket list.
Hoping some of you right coast Flappers get a chance to catch our boys while they are back there. I called for a 4-2 road trip. A win today would be sweet (series win). And they can fuck with the Yank-Mees chances of making the dance…that in and of itself is awesome.
GO GIANTS!
RE: last night’s game. Even being completely out of the race, to have a fricking 3 run lead, and lose in the 9th…it still is like a kick to the stomach. It still hurts like hell. I was thinking (as Blade was…who called it a night) that the game was in the bag.
Oh well, let’s get the win and series win today behind Big Country.
Tim, Vogey, and Petit lined up against that infamous TBD for the Yank-Mee series.
Craig – great picture of you and your pops. Awesome. I’m digging the supsenders.
Im pissed off at Bochy right now.It was a perfect time to see if Hembree could of done the job last night.in the 9th,after Casilla blew up and walked 2 in a row.Instead he goes with a very overworked and tired Romo, who didnt have it and blew the save.
Cain was dealin and deserved the win and now has no chance to reach 10 wins and a possible winning record. Thanks Bruce!!
oh, come on, kat. you’re *always* pissed at bochy 😉
byw, unless it was missed, in that baseball america poll i mentioned, bochy was named the nl’s best manager by his peers..
I might go Saturday. Adrianza starts at SS and no Belt vs. lefty Niese. I don’t care if the Yanks throw 3 lefties at the Giants this weekend, if Belt isn’t in the lineup for all three games with that ridiculously short RF to take aim at, then the Giants really do have it in for him.
Pagan CF
Abreu 2B
Posey 1B
Pence RF
Sanchez C
Arias 3B
Perez LF
Adrianza SS
Bumgarner P
So Crawford is officially being platooned now? That kind of snuck up on me.
crawford is hitting.216 in over 300 plate appearances against lefties in his career and .203 this year in over 150 pa. it’s not like he hasn’t been given the opportunity to improve against them. next year will be interesting to see what they do in that regard.
Not only that, but if you expand the rosters, the guys you bring up do need some playing time. If this isn’t Adrianza’s first start at SS, he sure as hell hasn’t had much playing time. I see this as a non-issue, and agree with Twin about Crawford’s opportunities, and what the team will do next year. And don’t get me wrong…I have been a big Crawford supporter back to when he was drafted, his time in the minors, and to when he got his first sniff at ML playing time.
Kat – actually, if the rotation stays the course, Cain gets two more starts. His spot will be due up for the first game of the Bums series, and then he would be slotted to start the season finale vs. Dago.
That was the main reason I was pissed. Cain throws a gem and gets spit on by the pen. Not that he’s hurting at all, but with any help, he’s got about 20 more wins (and 20 less losses) in his career.
Chuck pissed off? Hard to believe.
I’m going to guarantee Giants score a bunch by saying Bum looks to be screwed again with today’s lineup.
And Posey will hit 2 hrs and knock in 5 by asking WTF has happened to Posey in the 2nd half?
WTF – the Friars have ripped off four in a row…don’t they know we’re on a fricking quest for 3rd?!
Any Flappers planning to attend any games on the final homestand?
I know that many here are probably are league loyalists (I get it…I can’t stand the sissy-assed brand of baseball played by the Jr. Circuit), but where do you all stand on the playoffs? Will you always pull for the NL over the AL?
Specifically, will any be rooting for the A’s (even though they are part of the Jr. Circuit)? (And as many are league loyalists, I also know that some hate all forms of cross-bay rivals, such as the A’s, Rayduhs, etc.)
Just curious. While many have said they want to see the Bums bounced in the first round (and I can buy into that), I would get some satisfaction on seeing the A’s put a whoop-ass on the Bums.
playoff thoughts;
first i’m hoping the bucs can turn it on and take their division, in any case, i’m rooting them to get to the series. finally, they have management that wants to win and not just pocket revenue bucks..
dodgers? definitely a threat to go all the way with their pitching. but yet another early ouster is my hope.
al- that’s tough. i want to root for the a’s because of the players. but wolf’s comments blaming the fans for not not coming out when he and fisher have done everything they can to alienate the fans makes it hard to wish a championship for that group. but given the other choices, i’ll root for the a’s and a world series against the bucs, with the pirates taking it all.
I concur.
If Pittsburgh makes it all the way, I’d pull for them. Cincy as well. The rest of the teams NL teams? Ehhh. Fuck ’em. Don’t really like Atl, fuck the redbirds and the doggers, and screw the rest of the AL.
The A’s? I think it would be hysterical if they won it all. It would be Major League come to life. Watching them play the World series in a half-full crumbling piece-of-shit stadium would be epic. Al Davis would be laughing in hell.
But it would be a half-full crumbling piece-of-shit stadium with the tarps removed from the upper deck. 😉
I agree that if the Bucs or Reds make it, I will pull for them to win it all. But I like that the A’s are making some noise. And I would like to see the O’s get into the dance. Screw Tex-ASS, the Rays, etc. They’ve had their chance…let’s see some new blood make it.
Brandon has gotten a pass because of his defense. Next year, that may not happen if they find someone that can hit satisfactorily and not embarrass themselves defensively. Consequently, there is an even or better chance, he will find himself in a platoon situation . . . unless, all of sudden he can hit lefties. Not likely to happen based upon his history/significant opportunities to prove himself (as Twin pointed out).
In fantasy, you are well aware of certain types of splits, especially extreme splits. Brandon Moss is probably the most significant left/right platoon I know of. This guy is lights out when facing a righty, but he RARELY gets an opportunity to bat against a lefty. I usually avoid platoon players, but he is an exception (especially this year). I have to check the line up every day to see who he is facing . . . In fact, this week he has faced an inordinate amount of lefties. Very unusual to see more than 2 in a 7 day period. He is facing 4 this week. The only reason they don’t give him opportunities to face more lefties is because of what I alluded to before regarding Crawford, i.e., the A’s are loaded with good alternatives at DH, 1st base, and outfield, so Moss sits.
By the by, another two splits I pay attention to are road record (see the Sherpas), ballpark (see Sherpas again). The latter factor you have to pay attention to when facing the Red Sox (bandbox), Yankees, Texas, and Cincy at home . . . All of these parks I hate. I will more times than not, sit my pitchers (not named Darvish, Wainwright, Verlander) if they are playing in these bandboxes.
I’ll just file here my daily opposition to sitting Belt when a lefty is pitching. Why not put him in LF and try that out NOW in a few real MLB games?…
Pawlie and me will be at the Sunday game as part of the block of 250 Finnerty Giants fans. Though we will be close to the airplanes overhead in Section 434B Grandstand, no doubt we will make ourselves known… Greatest wish is being there for an elimination game for the Yankees.
new post on my blog with our preseason division and wild card calls and a possible postseason contest with a prize- pending craig’s approval.
http://zekesplace.wordpress.com/2013/09/19/our-preseason-division-predictions/
sure, sounds good. thanks for coordinating all of that.
cool, i’ll do the contest thread here, as soon as the races are settled and match ups decided. any ideas on how to determine the winner. i don’t want to end until the world series teams are decided.
Thanks for putting this together, Twin. Boy, was I WAY OFF on some of the predictions. I had the Red Sox LAST in the AL East. Giants winning the NL West with 92 wins. Swing and a MISS!
who closes if needed? how about belt 😉
After the shit I saw last night in the 9th…Belt may not be a bad choice. He did pitch in his younger days…I think in HS.
Here we go again. Lead going into the late innings. Madison is probably done for the day at 109 pitches…and that means…uh, the bullpen again. I remember when our bullpen was NAILS.
Close this mother out, Giants!
and hawkins, at 61 yo is the mets’ closer…
Had to step away…not sure if they commented on any action in the Giant’s BP…will be interesting to see who comes out to close for the Giants. After the results and # of pitches by Romo last night…I don’t expect it to be him. Do they trot Machi back out there (he only threw 11 pitches)?
machi got their best hitters.
right handers against lopez this year .294. last year .417.
today- .000
Ballgame! WHOOT! And series win. Lopez the new closer (just kidding)???
Yay! The loogy nails it down for MadBum.
Hooray!
SHIT! Hate it when I get busy and miss the whole game. Weekday home games are the best when you work at home . . .
and BLEEP! Beat ya to it, Nippy.
WOOF!
I am about to get on a plane to Tampa Bay and ring Darvish’s frickin’ neck. (*&%@$
Looks like the Sherpa Luge Team won their marathon game against the Redbirds in the 15th.
I am going to Sunday’s game — there and back, same day — with the Finnerty’s crowd, and Dennis Z., his wife, and Pawlie’s Mystery Female Guest While Living an Estranged Life.
The life of a celibate estranged monk is a difficult one. 😦
My Best Giants friend is at the games in NY NL and 1st two at yankee stadium. he goes on a Giants road trip to two or three cities every year with 2 brothers and their dad. Very cool. They we on the party bus to shea on Tuesday evening. Rockin it was…
