A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Voggy vs Becketty

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 8, 2014

I have nothing new to say about Tim Lincecum, therefore……..
Pretty big series coming up in LA, yes?

If I continue to think that Beckett is done then I have to believe that the Giants have a decent shot to win this game tonight. And then I turn to see who’s on the hill for us, and I’m longer as confident.

So, I have no idea what’s going to happen tonight.

Voggy’s had two pretty good starts in a row, but Beckett’s got far better stats over a similar amount of innings, so on paper, it’s advantage LA, regardless that they had a troubled and rain delayed roadie…

Just my take, but we are favorites to take this game this evening, despite it being played on the Bums home turf. Voggy has limited his last two opponents to one run over 13 innings. Also, although Vogelsong didn’t receive a decision in two outings against the Dodgers last month – where he yielded five runs in 10 innings – the starts were both GMen victories. He’s also 4-3 with a 3.97 ERA in 21 games (12 of them starts) versus Los Angeles.

He needs to watch out for Gordon who is 9 for 23 off him and Hanley Ramirez, who has hit .421 with two solo homers in five games against us (last month). On our side, Hunter Pence is 8 for 19 when facing Beckett. Last, but not least, we have won nine of the last 12 meetings against these “Art Dealers” and Beckett hasn’t won a game in 19 months.

Put me down for the Giants winning at least a split in LALA Land and possibly, 3 of 4. πŸ™‚

OK, blade. I’m convinced. Voggy the Conqueror tonight. I just want to make sure he’s got the enchiladas…

If Vogey has anything at all stuff-wise, he can out-gut anybody. I’m going with him tonight and a resurgent Belt to take Game One.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 11:25 am

Yeah, he’s definitely a battler as long as he’s got some stuff. And yes, Belt has warmed up a bit, he must have decided after a Bochy benching to stop being a putz and go back to that Bam Bam inspired grip…

Yeah, I gave a quick synopsis on the match-ups last thread. Beckett done? As I mentioned on the last thread, he has a 3.14 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. I would LOVE those numbers for our 4/5 guys. Also, Beckett has thrown 28.2 innings in 5 starts (certainly more than either Tim or Vogey). So, I am not real confident with tonight’s game. Given Steve’s VogelStrong stats…I am a bit more optimistic…but am not running down to throw some coin on this one.

Also, very good post by WillieD (last one) on the last thread. I absolutely agree.

  6. Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on May 8, 2014 at 12:22 pm

Beckett has more starts where he has gone at least 5. If the Giants got 5 from Vogey and Tim each start and they ran in that 3-4 run range, I would be very happy with that.

I am having an enchilada for lunch…hope Nicole hooked Vogey up with his…

Giants need to win their minimum 2 before Kershaw shows up Sunday. Past history indicates that’s probably not a good shot at a win…

  9. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 8, 2014 at 12:53 pm

There’s probably no SABR numbers to back it up, but I think that ‘4 starting outfielders’ thing is hurting the Dodgers. It’s got to be a weird dynamic in the clubhouse with that going on. And especially since one of them is the goofball Puig. It’s ironic in light of the talk here about benches: the Dodgers, in a sense, have TOO much bench, if that’s possible.
The Dodger bullpen has been less lights-out than expected, so far.
The Dodgers haven’t been the world-beaters, so far, as predicted by the preseason pundits. Obviously injuries have factored in, but all teams have injuries to deal with.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on May 8, 2014 at 12:59 pm

Unfortunately our injuries are just the bench players…

Late in the game, Bochy looks down the bench and just sighs.

Being a National League guy, whenever I see gooey gushing amounts of praise being heaped up on Jeter on his Retirement Tour 2014, it makes me want to gag. During the Angels/Yankees game last night, the Angels’ broadcasters were just going on about Jeter all game. Lots of Yankee fans had grabbed up tickets to be at the game, so all kinds of Jeter-worship was going on in the crowd. One guy just stood there with a #2 Yankee jersey in his hands like he was holding the American flag from Iwo Jima.
People in the media can’t visualize how much the rest of the nation really doesn’t care that much about Jeter. Jeter’s appeal has never been nation-wide. Well, of course, in general, baseball players don’t have national attention. When companies want athletes in their TV commercials, baseball players are well down the list. Probably just above bowlers or something.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 8, 2014 at 1:17 pm

Agree with you on a a lot of that but I think Jeter is a national brand.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 8, 2014 at 1:17 pm

He’s a HOFer, but if he played in Milwaukee for 20 years, he’s Derek Molitor and ESPN barely shows him. I don’t give an S about the Yankees, never have, never will. How hard is it to stay a Yankee fan when they’ve won 27 championships or some such, and basically have a bottomless pit of dough to buy players? Being a Yankee fan is as hard as being a fan of water…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 8, 2014 at 1:52 pm

Agree. I’m more surprised when their money buys squat (2nd place or below) as it has done for the last dozen years or so, sans 2009, when they beat the hapless Phils.

Fans in San Francisco are rabid about the Giants and my feeling is that it has little to do with how much money the “suits” spend on players. Of course, things certainly improved when we moved from Candlestick Park to easily one of the best parks in MLB. In short, the venue is excellent for watching a game.

However, it is easier to love, relate to, and be a fan of quirky players like Pat Burrell, Angel Pagan, Pablo Sandoval, Aubrey Huff, Barry Zito, and other down to Earth people that have worn the orange and black. Conversely, Derek Jeter seems sort of a corporate creation, as do most of the Yankees that have worn the pin stripes.

    • James's avatar James said, on May 8, 2014 at 2:21 pm

Apart from the fact that it’s usually Yankee-related, in general I think we want continued recognition of players and teams at a national level. Our gratification in, e.g., the Giants winning a World Series (a grand label that’s already fairly presumptuous) is bound up in it.

  11. Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on May 8, 2014 at 2:02 pm

I appreciate Jeter for being a damned fine ballplayer, and for staying loyal to his original team. Outside of that, I could give a flying fuck.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we have more important shit to take care of. Like…
