Game Time Thread!
Thought I’d pop one up there even though I’m not too partial to a new thought one way or the other. Not feeling real good about this one, Dozier and Parmelee are my picks for Twins who might go off tonight. But whatever, good luck Voggy…..
I had a long back and forth with a buddy at work this week about the best sports movie ever made. First of all, it’s almost impossible to pick just one. We battled over that for nearly a day.
Secondly, I discovered that your age will usually determine which way you go on “fav sports movies”. My buddy is about 12 years younger than me so he didn’t rank “Hoosiers” as highly as I did. I had that movie #2 behind “Let it Ride” which is in the top 5 of my all time favorite movies.
Feel free to share your favorites to pass the time if Voggy gets blasted tonight……

I might go with “Bang The Drum Slowly.” Kind of an under-the-radar choice I know, but if you’ve seen it, you think its at least pretty good. Makes me cry every time.
Going to the Pads game tonight and tomorrow. Retro brown jersey give-away tonight. The Pads are doing it right and distributing 5 different names on the backs of jerseys: Nettles, Gwynn, Whitson!, McReynolds, and Garvey. I hope they let you choose, but I’ll be happy with anyone but Garvey. I’ll make a scene if they try to give me a Garvey jersey. Kind of hoping for Nettles or McReynolds.
Reminds me of bat day in the good old days. I have one of those bats left, a kelly green Joe Rudi bat and it is bad ass. The 70’s were awesome. You gotta love handing out 40,000 full size bats to everyone.
That’s a fantastic giveaway. I’d probably go *Whitson*. Some of the older guys probably remember the full sized bat days. I think that was just a couple of years before my time…
The giveaway is the whole reason we are going. I even went so far as to actually PURCHASE my tickets for this game—and that is a rare occurrence when it comes to me and Padre games.
That is an awesome giveaway. I would take that over a bobblehead all day long.
Arenado hits the DL with a broken finger incurred by yet another head first dive into a bag.
I’d stop worrying about Posey and his sissy-ass swipe tag and focus instead on outlawing the headfirst slide. Especially into first base. If I’m running the team, I fine anyone who slides headfirst into first base.
And while I’m at it, any pitcher running balls out down the line, with no chance of being safe, would get hit with a fine, too.
I still say that Casilla’s gag on that play was going to be running like a lunatic down the line–it was going to provide teammate shit talking fodder for weeks if not the whole season. That plan got ditched quick when the Hammy Sniper took him down……
Arenado is on one of my FL teams . . . Sigh. Reyes is on another of my teams and was a one man wrecking crew against the A’s today, but I was gnashing my teeth on his head first slide into home. Dumb.
My five and a half year old has been into the Rocky movies which seem like they play nonstop lately. I have to admit, I still enjoy watching them. I loved them as a kid, so it’s kinda cool to see my son with the same fascination….In fact were watching Rocky IV right now.
These are my favorite sports movies of all time:
Best Boxing Movie – Raging Bull
Best Basketball Movie – Hoosiers
Best Baseball Movie (comedy) – Major League
Best Baseball Movie (drama) – A League Of Our Own (it does have funny parts though)
Best Football Movie – Brian’s Song
Misc. Sports – Rollerball (LOL . . . I wish this game actually existed)
I just saw Rounders for the first time last week. Does that qualify as a sports movie? Cause it was rad……
just got a text from San Diggity who is at the Pad’s game angling for something other than a Garvey jersey. Word for word: “They were fucking sealed and I fucking got Garvey! I had to hustle but I swapped a guy for McReynolds!”
That’s hilarious!
Agree. I can’t stand Garvey and I would be doing everything in my power to trade with someone . . . Last option before going home? Garvey jersey goes into the trash receptacle.
Ignoring Nate Colbert is a travesty by the Padres…
What about Winfield?
You’re so right, Salty. WTF is going on there?
Shit, didn’t think about that. If you were gonna put ONE Padre in that uni from back then it would have to be him, right? Musta had a falling out with the org. It happens.
Like blade, I would have Hoosiers, Major League and Brian Song on my list. Why didn’t I mention Raging Bull? Because I happen to think it’s one of the greatest movies ever made (no Sports category needed).
For football I’d add Rudy (the Rudy chant gets me going every time),
Baseball I’d add The Pride of the Yankees (hey the Babe plays himself), Fear Strikes Out, Eight Men Out and Bingo Long Traveling All Stars & Motor Kings. I agree with SanDawg on Bang the Drum Slowly, hey De Niro is in it, say no more in my book.
Oh yeah, for Winter Olympics, gotta go with Cool Runnings. “Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, its bobsled time! Cool Runnings! “
there was a team USA hockey movie that came out. I’m not a real movie buff, I know it was super popular but I can’t remember the name and I haven’t seen it. Anyway, it was on my buddy’s list of top 5 so I’ll catch it at some point
Eeeeeeiiiii . . . Forgot about Rudy. LOVED THAT MOVIE!
What’s this I see on my TV guide? The Giants game is showing on the tube out here? Fuck Yeah!
Flav, I think the hockey one was called “Slapshot” and it was pretty funny.
Which reminds me of something else we talked about last night, and the guy who would know movies:
Ted. Hope dude is well and he chimes back in here.
really? I don’t think this was a comedy, this one was more of a drama. But that’s just what I heard, maybe I’m wrong.
Another classic. Flav, check that movie out. Willie’s right, a great movie with Paul Newman
started doing a slow burn about why Winfield wasn’t a jersey tonight in SD (prompted by Salty above)- Texted San Dawg and he said it’s a celebration of the ’84 pennant winning team and Winny wasn’t on that. There is, he said, some grumbling in the stands about why Goose Gossage and Eric Show weren’t offered up…..
Or Kurt Bevacqua?
The Longest Yard with Burt Reynolds is pretty damn good. Love when he insults the “miniature cop” at the beginning.
I vaguely remember seeing that and I know it’s supposed to be great. Might re-watch it at some point.
Loo, where do you stand with Let it Ride? Give it to me straight.
Never cared for it, BF, but haven’t watched it in ages. I’ll give it another shot on your recommendation one of these days…
it was part of my teen years when I was just getting into the track. And I’ve seen it probably 100 times since and all the little nuances kill me. It’s probably too dated of a movie for you to just pick it up, watch it and enjoy it today….
I wouldn’t have noticed that “Brandon’s together weekend” commercial except for the fact that I saw the outtakes about a month ago and they were hilarious. I think I posted it somewhere in a thread a while back.
Pence lunging and squibbling, just like PaulinAsia said yesterday…
Man, that pitcher was clueless. Probably the first time he held a bat since high school.
Loo- because I love you and I fear the wrath of Buzzsaw, I emailed you a blueray copy of Let it Ride. Check your email. The download is like 20 minutes. My buddy sent it to me, I’m not real savvy with that stuff and don’t know if it’s still available. But when I downloaded it it popped up on my screen in about 20-30 minutes.
I sent it to the *barn* email. Not sure if you still check that. Or if you ever have. lol.
Thank you. I’ll see what I can do with that this week.
at the very least, rip a beat to Vickie’s sweet rack. I know I did back in the day. Porn has evolved over the years but Vickie’s rack was the best. Loved that chick.
Add another $10 million to that Sandoval contract proposal
Get that 40 million dollar contract offer over to panda fucking STAT!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy the Panda while you can. Someone’s gonna give him 6 years/$ 120 million…minimum.
I’ve enjoyed the Panda long enough. Love him, Like him, hate him. If he goes, he goes, I’m fine with that as long as we have a contingency plan which we clearly don’t have in the minors right now. But hey, if Panda bolted for 150 mil and Sabes found the equivalent of Hicks at 3rd base (or just moved Hicks over to 3rd base) I’m not gonna sweat it much.
Diggity is taking pics of chicks wearing Whitson jerseys and sending them to me. Hey, looks like he’s stumbled upon a sweet way to pick up women at a baseball game.
I popped a pic of one of the chicks Diggity photographed into the main thread. He seems distracted from the game, good thing he’s not a Padre fan.
I’m not distracted enough to be horrified by the Padres giving Winfield’s number to Whitson.
Looks good from behind, anyway. How easy would it be to snatch her purse and bolt?
looking up chicks skirts on the stairwell and snagging purses? Loo, you’re incorrigible!
SD started playing FL with his son and he’s indicated that doing this has brought both of them closer together. Both of them are having fun with it. I’ve loved FL since Flav introduced me to it 5 years ago, so it always puts a smile on my face when someone else enjoys it as I do.
currently 5th out of 670 in a $5. Still have Panda going. Not much else happening so that place or better is reasonable thinking.
Awesome!
That’s not a bad looking jersey for a freebie. See if he can send one from the front side.
that was the immediate text I shot him. We’ll see.
It’s hard to argue against anything other than Voggy is not done……
If no one’s mentioned this: The Bad News Bears. Glad to see Slap Shot get some love. Flav, My guess on the USA hockey movie is Miracle?
Yeah, I think there were 2 films made about that 1980 gold medal team, and if I remember correctly, Herb Brooks was played by Karl Malden in the first one and Kurt Russell in the second one. Miracle on Ice, maybe.
And the Padres should hand out a Leon Durham jersey.
Didn’t hurt eventually, but Voggy F’d up that routine throw to first. Is the Giants pitching staff the worst fielding staff in the NL? In MLB? If not, I’d like to know who’s worse. Every time one of our hurlers has a shot at fielding and throwing, I get prepared to throw an embolism…
On movies, I liked the recent “42” on Jackie Robinson. Nicely done, and the athletes actually looked like players, and none of the actors was a spaz on the field…
If someone gave me a Garvey jersey, regardless of team, I would burn it, then piss on the ashes for a benediction…
So, Snarkk, how do you really feel about Garvey? 🙂
“Watching” on Gameday on the Giants site.. love the little scouting reports they stream: “That was pitch number 15 for Jared Burton; his effectiveness may start slipping, as he holds opposing hitters to a .207 average in the first 15 pitches but they hit .375 off him after that.”
I wonder if a play by play announcer has ever actually described a Bumgarner snot rocket as it was happening.
OK, I’m eating some crow dessert here with my one finger of Lagavulin with one small ice cube. Voggy was nails again tonight, for a 6th straight solid to fine performance. What he’s done to recover from a long period of crappiness, I have no idea. But, he’s righted the ship, and it’s a good thing…
The Padres should be giving away a Garry Templeton jersey. I’d think if you trade Ozzie Smith away for another shortstop that jersey should be celebrated, right?
I think Chad Zerbe’s pitched more than Javier Lopez this season…
Panda now has 96 career HRs…
I don’t like the idea of pulling your hottest hitter who holds his own at 3b for a PH in this close of a game.
Defensive replacement not PH
Slapshot is awesome. Funny as hell. Caddyshack has to make the list. The original longest yard. Blind side was a good story told well. Le Mans. On Any Sunday (the dirtbike move, not the piece of shit by Oliver Stone).
Red Line 7000 for you oldsters out there. Raging Bull.
Fuck, Romo. You are getting lit up these last couple days.
Let’d hope that’s a rally killer.
Fucking Romo just left another one up.
Posey haqs tovteach Sanchez how to frame oitches, That was masterful by posey there.
Nice win boys.
Yes! Ballgame!
Little bit of drama, but Romo was Romo in the end.
Yes, good game and very nice win.
Downhill Racefr for you (old) skiers out there.
The Hustler.
Agree on both.
Well-earned win for Vogey.
Did someone say Brian’s song? My cousin was a huge Bears fan and was devastated when he died.
There’s a great clip in the movie of the real Sayers running back a kickoff for a TD untouched all the way with some kind of classical type of music playing in the background…
Yeah, that’s curious to me, DJ. The pen is short-handed and Lopez barely gets a sniff.
Wow. Best record in MLB.
The “Who’s Your Padre?” and the “Steve Garvey is not my Padre” bumperstickers that came out when Garvey got traded to the Pads were hysterical.
Was there not anyone among us who showed confidence in Vogelsong when he was going badly earlier in the year? I think there may have been one lone voice in the wilderness who had his back. I can’t for the life of me remember which poster that was that supported him, but somebody on here felt Vogy was gonna be fine while everyone else wanted his ass DFA’d. And yes Snarrk, you were the leader of the pitchfork and torch gang, so it is good to see you express some contrition. Are you able to do some consulting on the side? I think Ray Rice could use your assistance before his next presser!
80’s night at Petco was a blast. All 80’s music for walk-ups and between innings. “Turning Japanese” was an especially big hit with the crowd, which was a rare San Diego sellout.
Great call on Templeton. He was very popular down here, as was Flannery (San Diegans STILL love Flannery) and Bevacqua was actually a cult fan favorite as well. ’84 was my first year down here and we went to lots of games, so I remember that team pretty well. If I were in charge and it had to be 5 jerseys from 84, I would go:
Gwynn, Templeton, Gossage, Flannery, Garvey (begrudgingly).
The first 2 guys I approached to swap jerseys with ended up being from Germany. They had no idea who any of the players were, but just because I was so adamant about getting rid of Garvey, they wanted nothing to do with him either. It was actually pretty funny.
Not one of those who jumped on Vogelsong, but was not a rah-rah supporter either. My perspective was the classic “wait and see”. “Let’s wait till mid-May or so and see where he’s at”. Well, guess we know now. His ERA is now down to 3.20 and if he keeps up the pace he may even get All-Star consideration. Vogie is a bulldog and he’s ours. Pretty not too bad for a #5.
Was it you? It wasn’t me . . . I thought he was toast on a stick.
Yeah…….it was me. I think Chi had my back as well. It was Hangtown and Woodland against the world.
I had more hope Timmy would get on track.
Shit, speaking of hangtown I got to fix the dirtbikes . . . Broke the fuel line in the last move. Nd now we’re doing it again.
uuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggg…………………….
One of my brothers taught for several years at St. Elizabeth’s school in the Portola district in SF where all of my mom’s side of the family is from. (Fun fact: Dan White attended St. Elizabeth’s) The school closed a few years back and he went back there to pay his final respects. They were giving away a bunch of the library books and he grabbed several. They were mostly dated and one of them was “I Am Third” by Gale Sayers, that Brian’s Song was based on. My brother knew I loved that movie, so he gave the book to me. I read it and it was quite an interesting read, but not as PC as your typical sports star book would be these days. At one point, Sayers tells the story of the family dog being so critically ill and in so much pain that he took a knife and killed the dog with his own hands as his younger brother looked on. Yikes!
Read that when I was a kid. I forgot about that part!
Those times I talked shit about Vogelsong and said he was done? I’m eating all those words. Every one of them, and I am loving every bit of it. I bow down to the enchiladas…AND Nicole.
Pablo is unconscious. Great manufactured second run. Romo with a dash of old fashioned torture…beauty of a game. This is the type of game your team has to win regularly if ya want to go deep in the season and post season…shows some kick-ass grit and determination…great fundamental ball. I love that shit.
Happy Memorial Day, Flappers. Take a moment tomorrow to thank those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. All Gave Some. Some Gave ALL. Salute.
Fat City, Breaking Away, The Natural, Bull Durham. I always liked those. Then the Bad News Bears of course. It reminds me of my latch key youth I suppose. If only mom would of let me have that dirt bike. What about The Hustler? Does that count as a sports movie? Personally I think pool isn’t really a sport but that is a good movie.
Dawg, I’ll give you Vogs, but only for now. He was awful all of last year and the start of this one. He’s rolling last 6 starts. I’m still skeptical on Giants SPs not named Bumgarner. And I’ll give Blade props for warnings about Ubaldo as FA, getting his ass kicked in Balt, who owe him big bucks long term.
Pads of 84 had a great rotation as I remember…including guy from WhiteSox, right? Templeton helluva talent tho as I recall things didn’t end well for him in SD. Funny that getting to STL Astroturf was best thing that could have happened for Ozzie Smith, a .220 hitter for Pads.
I have pics of my godson throwing out a first pitch from Petco couple weeks ago. Snarkk talked about how nice park and surrounding area are. Might be a move to stay in hotel near the Airport and check that out…
“Only for now?” Yer killing me Willie D!!! It’s darn near the all-star break and he has been our best starter! Ok, ok, I exaggerate a little, but I still say he deserves an unqualified endorsement at this point.
“Unqualified” lol. Reminds me too much of Rueter, another classic nibbler I couldn’t stand.
Saw Byron Scott may be in mix to coach Lakers. I always dug this guy going back to Arizona State. He avg 18 or so as a frosh then had to sit out for academics, I think the term was *Prop 48 casualty*. Traded from Clips who drafted him for Norm Nixon (another guy I liked on Lakers), and the rest was hist as Showtime took off.
We currently do have a couple warts for the worriers in the bunch. Romo has been slipping in his last couple appearances. By July or August we may see the Brass lay down the Law. Second candidate is Buster. Somebody here mentioned it in recent postings. He’s not going the other way much any more and he has been slapping a lot of grounders to the left side of the infield ~ as in last night’s GDP. Something he’s gonna need to work on.
Sounds like we could have another Buster Bash on the horizon. Lord knows, we all love a good Buster Bash on here! What’s he ever done for this team anyway? JK…he’s been off with the bat lately, but I’m not worried about him. Romo does concern me a bit more. Seems like he’s serving up gopher balls at a pretty good clip this year.
Yeah, Buster has been scuffling lately (I know – as I have him on one of my FL teams . . . sigh). He needs to start hitting. Today would be perfect as he has a .400 batting average (8 for 20) against frickin’ Nolasco (another guy I am glad we didn’t sign Willie).
By the by, if I take credit for my hits, I also need to do a major mea culpa on my misses. No way, no how, did I see Voggy righting the ship. I had him DFA’ed seven ways from Sunday before the season began. Wow! What a turn around. Anywho, I love being wrong about him. Tiny Tim should be taking copious notes, as he has waaaaaaay more talent then Voggy and coupled with what Huddy is teaching the entire pitching staff, Tim should be able to benefit. In short, still on the fence about Tim and still believe he is a “match up” pitcher.
I wonder if Posey’s back is worse than people are letting on.
Nah, Giants would never mislead on a player’s medical issues….
Salute
i much prefer the sandlot to bad news bears. also like remember the titans more than the blind side. Kurt Russell did a great imitation of Brooks. I read ‘i am third” back in the day, checked it out of the library of all things, but don’t remember the dog scene. I hope you are all enjoying the day. Great indy 500, a family tradition, although we were almost always camping somewhere and trying to pick up the voice of the 500, paul page, on radio somehow.
I like Sandlot. The kids are are fun in that one. The scene where the little kid w/glasses fakes drowning to get mouth to mouth from the hot lifeguard is hilarious…
Year ago today was the Pagan inside the parker walk off game, which basically was the start of the Giants season slide. Bochy apparently recognizing that and starting Blanco, not risking a redux … 😉
Somebody mentioned the Indy 500. When I was a kid, the “voice” of the 500 was Sid Collins. He did the radio thing for years. That was before they televised it, so radio was it. And, they didn’t have 20 guys or whatever it is sprinkled around the track talking constantly, as they do now. It was Sid, the irreplaceable Chris Econamaki in the pits (I think he did radio then), and a coupla other dudes, and that was it. Those were the days of Foyt, Mario, Parnelli Jones, Dan Gurney, the Unsers and Andy “STP” Granatelli…
Pence with another dinger!…
This keeps up and dude needs to start going by Gerald.
If his back is hurt, they should DL him. Why is the #3 hitter not swinging w/bases loaded and nobody out at a pitch close enough to be a called strike?…
He thought it was a ball. 🙂
Sheez, zum, why didn’t I think of that?… 😉
Morse with the 3 RBI double! Saved Buster and Panda’s bacon. It’s sweep time…
SWEEP!
One reason they are winning…the 2 out hit.
Giants apparently prefer to knock runs in with 2 down…
They have to lead the league in two out rbi’s. It wasn’t long ago, you could go to the bathroom with men on base and two outs and you knew you weren’t going to miss anything.
LOL Phillies. Stick a phork in the Rollins/Utley era of the Phillies.
The Giants changed a lot of players since 2010, and it ended up keeping the Giants from turning into the Phillies.
LOL Dodgers. Throw a no-hitter and gain no ground on the Giants.
It’s funny you mention that Zum. I remember posting on here a few years back that the Giants should follow the model of the Phillies. My point being that you had to ensure a winning club which would lead to a packed house, which would lead to a winning club…The Phillies now have neither.
It’s like the Phillies never recovered from the Giants beating them in the playoffs in 2010. The Phillies started those playoffs with a no-hitter against Cincy, and it all looked like it was going to be great for the Phillies. And then the Giants derailed them.
Beautiful camera shots of the Bay and the ballpark all game long. Game well in hand. Very nice and very relaxing.
What’s not to like so far about interleague? — Giants now looking at likely 6-0 in interleague (Cleveland and Minny) ball so far this season… 🙂
The Giants have turned AT&T into an awesome homefield advantage again this season. I love it when a visiting team comes in and never looks comfortable the whole series playing in this ballpark.
Last season was so weird. The Giants got swept at home by the Cubs and the Mets. How to explain that?
Counting today, they’re scoring so far at just above a 4 rpg pace at ATT, whereas they were around 3.5 rpg last season at ATT. Big difference, and I would offer that as a major reason for the better home performance. Also, all last season they hit 44 HRs in 81 games at ATT. So far as of today’s game in progress, the Giants already have 23 HRs at ATT in just 25 games…
Cool info, thanks!
Like Pence just did, why do guys slide into home despite their teammate(s) that just scored on the foul side of the plate clearly holding up their hands with the “no need to slide” sign?…
I’m not a big Kontos fan. I hope he does well.
Why not spell Pence now in the outfield? 8th inning, up by 6, put in Colvin? Does Pence really have to play all 9 frames of every game? I guess the Twins could come back, but Hector just came in for Posey, so why not give Pence a break?…
Never mind, I just realized Colvin’s been in LF. Sheezus, our bench is short…
A Giants sombrero-sighting in the stands! 1 of the 20,000 of them out there in the world! I have one of them, too. 2013 Flapalooza!
Same deal with Panda, he just singled in bottom of the 8th. 6 runs up, why not PRun Arias for Panda, avoid a needless injury risk…
Morse is En Fuego — 3 straight doubles. If he continues that, and Panda is feelin’ it, and Pence is strokin’ it now — look out, even if Buster is hurt or whatever is going on with his batting…
Have a day, Morse!
And, a beer! IMO zum, Morse has been a huge diff for this team, certainly one of the reasons for the better home record. Really extends the lineup. I give Sabes credit when he’s due it, and he did a fine job grabbing this dude to shore up LF with some power. I think he’s a smart player, too. Morse was on second on that Colvin sharp grounder to first that Mauer knocked down in the bottom of the 8th, and Morse didn’t try to go to third on contact. That would have been an unnecessary risk of an out and of getting hurt when you’re up by 6 late in the game. He had a .506 SLG heading into today’s game, so it’s above that today…
SWEET SWEEP!…
