A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Game Time Thread!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 24, 2014

Thought I’d pop one up there even though I’m not too partial to a new thought one way or the other. Not feeling real good about this one, Dozier and Parmelee are my picks for Twins who might go off tonight. But whatever, good luck Voggy…..

I had a long back and forth with a buddy at work this week about the best sports movie ever made. First of all, it’s almost impossible to pick just one. We battled over that for nearly a day.

Secondly, I discovered that your age will usually determine which way you go on “fav sports movies”. My buddy is about 12 years younger than me so he didn’t rank “Hoosiers” as highly as I did. I had that movie #2 behind “Let it Ride” which is in the top 5 of my all time favorite movies.

Feel free to share your favorites to pass the time if Voggy gets blasted tonight……

Kontos looking very solid over 2 innings. He had an interview with Marty Lurie earlier today, said in Fresno he’s developed a cutter, is now throwing a changeup that moves away from LHBs, and his slider has bite back. Said he wasn’t ticked off about going pogo up and down, but also looks forward to being out of options next season – with a not so subtle meaning that he figures he’s good enough to stick with a major league club, not necessarily the Giants…

Baggs commenting on twitterfeed that Morse’s 3 doubles today compare to Buster’s 3 doubles so far ALL SEASON. That’s just crazy. Is Posey hurt?…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 25, 2014 at 4:07 pm

His 2nd half of last season sucked, too…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 25, 2014 at 4:16 pm

I think the explanation is that Posey’s hurt. They’re not saying. That’s why he’s getting the kid glove treatment all the time. You don’t have an MVP season in 2012, then drop off the hitting planet in the second half of 2013, and now just 3 doubles 51 friggin games into 2014. I really had no idea — 3 doubles? If he’s not hurt, he’s way overpaid. Friggin Adrianza has 2 doubles…

      It ain’t from catching Lincecum.

I know Flav doesn’t care for Morse at 1b, but dude is raking and provides serious middle order pop. If you put him in LF, then who plays 1b while Belt is out?

Gimme some more AL central too. NL central up next, and I don’t think last year vs. those teams was good. Time for some payback, starting with Cubs.

WSox and Royals might be a little better than the Twins. Tigers? I dunno, I figure they’re overrated by the ECoast media untill they prove otherwise…

When you lead the team in RBI’s you are allowed to be a bit of a menace at first base…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 25, 2014 at 4:13 pm

sorry, didn’t see yours…but yeah, agreed. Colvin looks OK too, and even Blanco starting to hit.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 25, 2014 at 4:18 pm

I’m diggin me some Morse. Give me More Morse. I hope they put him in LF every once in a while so he doesn’t forget how to play out there…

The Giants bullpen is so strong and deep that I don’t think we will miss Casilla as much as we think. They might be the only club that has three guys in Fresno that would probably be late inning relievers on nearly every other club in baseball (Hembree, Runzler and Dunning). Not to mention Law at Richmond.

    • stickman's avatar stickman said, on May 25, 2014 at 5:51 pm

D’accord completely. Giants current strongest suit is the depth and the overall excellence of the bullpen. This one hasta be the best in baseball. Even Romo, who has shown signs of being mortal lately, is second in saves, while a few by other bullies make us tops in the league in that critical category. When the starters go long, as all three did vs the Twins, those bully boys get plenty of rest and stay fresh.

With Bumgarner having thrown a passel of pitches after 7 i figured the call had to go to Kontos, cause for all practical purposes he’s slop man right now, pitching in blowouts. One hit in two IP. Not exactly shabby, even if the Twinks may have been a bit demoralized after going down by six runs ~ultimately seven. So we’re deeper than the Marianas Trench and stronger than the Atlas Mountains.

Best record in the game and although you can make a good case for several guys, they don’t have a sure fire All Star representative. I guess Bum’s the best bet at the moment.

    • stickman's avatar stickman said, on May 25, 2014 at 6:20 pm

No need to fret over All-Star representation. It is entirely possible that our current best record in the game will maintain. Should that eventuate, it would be a stretch for SF to get only a token presence in mid-July. In addition to Bumgarner, Hudson and Crawford would be good bets to win the honor. There’s also the possibility that one of Morse, Pence and Panda will manage to stay hot. Anyway, the real deal happens in October, I like our chances.

The AS Game is near meaningless. Get into the playoffs and let’s see what happens…

      • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on May 25, 2014 at 7:49 pm

Not quite true, Snarkk. Besides home field in the WS, don’t you think it would mean a lot to guys like Crawford, Morse, and Pagan to be there?

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 25, 2014 at 8:45 pm

It’s near meaningless to me. I haven’t watched it now for several years. I’d rather our guys have the rest, to be honest. The WS home field advantage depending on the AS game winner is an abomination that I hope is changed by a new commissioner…

Fifty games into the season with a baseball best 32-18 record. Are we looking at the melding of a monster? Best bullpen in baseball and all five starters can go 7 frequently. Defense keyed by CrawDaddy had the attention of Dan Gladden broadcasting for the Twins this series. He described our SS as one of the best in the game, also raving over his improved hitting. Seven of our position players are likely to finish well into double figures this season~ likely half of them getting more than 20 dingers. In that category SF is second
only to Colorado, who, playing in the Box of Rox, should get an *asterisk*. Clutch hitting? We got that too. Chemistry? Don’t even ask.

Current pace projects to 100+ wins. Even with Belt, Scutaro and Casilla out and others having missed play due to injuries, this team simply keeps on keeping on. Could be last season was a bit of an outlier, what with Zito finally hitting the skids pretty hard, Vogelsong not quite back to par after an injury and the long absence of our Angelic sparkplug. This is a squad which has been the big winner in half the last four seasons. This cast of characters is melding into a monster. Sabean pickups such as Monster Morse and the Hudson Terraplane have been key additions. And don’t forget that our GM and his scouting and evaluation staff are dumpster divers deluxe with recent adds including Hicks, Colvin and Guttierez, each of whom have contributed considerably. This bunch of winners is not built on big bucks. It is the result of superb management and wise choices of players who are meshing into a monster.

Everytime Stick references Hudson with *Terraplane* I’m reminded of my all time fav Robert Johnson song, “Terraplane blues” with those awesome slide moves at end of each verse:

“Gotta woman that I’m lovin/ way down in Arkansas”

Speaking of Hudsons, Willie, did you know that the great Lou Hudson unfortunately passed away last month?
      A terrific ballplayer…

yeah, saw that. One of premier mid range shooters, another lost art. One of best all time for Hawks.

You enjoying rangers/canadiens series? Great O-6 match up. As long as bruins are out I don’t care who wins.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 25, 2014 at 8:16 pm

wow helluva play to win it too. 20 yrs for both these teams; Rangers look good.

KNBR’s Bryan Murphy posted something after the game.
I read a lot in general, so I like to think I know how to read; but I’ve read this several times, and I still have no idea what he means:
“You could’ve packaged the Twins’ offense this weekend and sold it with soup and nobody would’ve said, “These are exceptional saltines!” they would’ve said, “Why did I ruin this soup with saltines?”

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 25, 2014 at 6:41 pm

      Maybe he was drunk.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 25, 2014 at 6:44 pm

Let’s see. Twins = saltines. Soup = ? Huh? Murphy’s being hanging around his usual non-sensical buddy Mac (his radio buddy) too long…

I enjoy HRs and scoring runs way more than the “torture” stuff…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 25, 2014 at 6:45 pm

The ancient book “The Art Of War,” by Sun Tzu, says “You must fight the battle you are in, not the battle you WISH you were in.” The Giants won in 2010 and 2012 with the weapons they had.
But having said that, I agree, I LOVE winning 8-1; it’s AWESOME.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 25, 2014 at 6:51 pm

I love the WS wins, but I love me some HRs and some scoring. I even said back in those days I preferred a balanced team, I think it is more sustainable. This team does not have the dominant starting pitching as 2010 and to a lesser extent 2012, but it has good starting pitching so far (James – 2nd in NL with ERA of 3.05, 6th in starting ERA at 3.48), a very good Pen, good but not great D, and better scoring (so far) than the recent SF teams. Balanced. The only big weakness is the bench. There’s no substitute for power…

  11. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 25, 2014 at 7:04 pm

Giants so far in the NL:
2nd in overall ERA at 3.05
6th in starters ERA at 3.48
3rd in reliever ERA at 2.23, 1st in reliever WHIP at 1.03
    8th in BA
    2nd in HRs
    4th in runs
4th in SLG, 4th in OPS
    9th in OBP
IMO, you combine 4th in scoring runs with 2nd in overall ERA, you’re going to win a lot of games…

  12. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 25, 2014 at 7:09 pm

Cubs are ranked 10th or worse in most NL offensive categories. They are middle of the road in most pitching categories. Giants should take the series, but Samardzija is a tough nut tomorrow…
