A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Not much to say. Closed door meeting did nothing. The fresh new BBOTD was useless. Another day, another loss. And Voggy leaves me wanting more….

But still….”Panik Time!!!!!”

Don’t get too psyched, this dude just has to be a little better than the shit-duo of Hicks and Adrianza. At this point in his career, he should be able to at least do that…..

Yeah, the baseball gods threw us a little crumb yesterday with that Dodger loss in the 9th inning. But it’s a pretty darned nice crumb. The Giants are still up 5 games in the loss column, which is actually kind of remarkable given the total collapse of the past two weeks.
How about a…….WIN today. A WIN. An actual WIN. Like, when our team has more runs at the end of the game than their team. A WIN!!

    Pav:
“Second baseman Joe Panik is on his way to Phoenix and will be added to the big league roster Saturday. The Giants will need to make two moves, adding Panik to the 40-man roster and removing a player from the active roster.”

      Hi Twin,
Well there’d a few ? Mark scrubs up choose from, and You can jettison Hicks, since they won’t do it to Ehire.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 21, 2014 at 12:37 pm

I’m not understanding most of your comment, Kat. I’d like Hicks to just go away, but they may like him as possible power off the bench. If so, I think Arias might go from the active roster and Dunning from the 40-man.

Sorry Twin, text phone scrabble from rushing.
I meant the 40 man Roster guys,Hell guys like even Angel Villanova,Blackburn, Cordier? And a few others not worthy on the 40 man as well, unless the org still something I don’t in them(trades who knows)
Yeah the active roster take your pick, Arias, Hicks, Adrianza, shit do we still have Kontos? On the 40, many to choose from IMO..,

Yep…in a bit of a Panik attack, management woke the hell up and recalled Joe Panik. As Michael said, corresponding moves have not been announced, but it appears at this time that Pagan will NOT go on the DL.

    http://www.csnbayarea.com/giants/giants-recall-infielder-joe-panik-triple

And there were also pre- and post-game meetings yesterday. As we used to say out on the flight line when I was turning wrenches for the Air Force…time to kick the tires and light the fires (right before sending a jet out on a sorty).

    http://www.csnbayarea.com/giants/rewind-bochy-players-hold-meetings-slide-continues

And for those scoring at home, Panik will wear number 12.

Time to turn things around and show the world that 1 win in 10 non-withstanding, the Giants are one of the best clubs in MLB.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 1:09 pm

Since they’re calling Panik up, I hope they don’t sit on him. Or, he goes an initial 1 for 20 and Bochy bails on him. Play him and ride him hard, see what he can do for a few weeks in order to form a well-supported opinion before the deadline. If he can play, great. If not, no problem. He goes back down until callups and continues to improve and gets ABs. The Flap was right and way ahead of this move, as usual… 😉

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on June 21, 2014 at 1:23 pm

Well if Panik tanks, he can ride our BBOTD hard on that cap rail for starters…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 1:53 pm

Panik is way more advanced in the minors than Belt and Crawford were when they were first brought up. Crawford stuck because there were no other SS options. Craw was it, and they sweated through that initial period when he was booting chances left and right for the first two months. Belt wasn’t ready, and they messed around with his swing while he was figuring out where the bathroom was, so he had to go back down for more seasoning, they had other alternatives, though not good, at 1b. Give Panik a full month on the job to see what he can do before deadline — unless it’s obvious early on that he’s overmatched. With his stats, it’s doubtful he’ll be clearly overmatched — he’s got a good approach at the plate…

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 21, 2014 at 3:20 pm

Panik is a very patient contact style hitter. I too find it hard to believe he will be over-matched on a regular basis.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 21, 2014 at 3:19 pm

Hey, without doubt we are the best “collective GMs” in the fucking game. Sabes and crew probably frequent the Flap (or have a lackey do so) to see what the Flap has to say about the Giants’s world.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 21, 2014 at 3:48 pm

Don’t recall when I first said they should call Panik up but I do recall a good natured dispute here about whether he was in their plans ( I said he was) ..
When Evans said ( just a week or so ago) that there was no way Panik would be up this year I had to caution Pav’s folks- Never believe what management says…It’s almost a mantra for me.
Henry pretty much confirms that truism, writing in regard to their public stance:
“Privately, though, team officials conveyed a need to see Panik before the July 31 trade deadline. Brandon Hicks’ regression might have accelerated the move.”
In other words, I’m a wonderful man who knows just about everything.Except what I don’t know,.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 21, 2014 at 4:36 pm

Well, I never said he was not in their plans, but from the recent banter our of the three headed monster (Sabes, Evans, and Tidrow), it didn’t sound like we would see him prior to rosters expanding. But I do think that Hicks’ slide has contributed to the change in attitudes. You do come up with some good stuff Michael…just be careful and don’t hurt yourself while patting yourself on the back. 😉

  8. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 1:24 pm

    The secret has been revealed!
Scutaro has a “bulging disk”. No kidding. Shocker there. It took half a year to reveal this state secret. Why now is the curtain pulled back — who knows?
    http://www.csnbayarea.com/giants/marco-scutaro-i-cant-get-over-hump

I get the conservative treatment approach, but I’ve had several friends with bulging disks, and one that eventually ruptured. Platelets and therapy and cortisone, dot’s nice. But, unlikely to solve the problem to the point where you can play regularly, or well, at the MLB level. Usually, surgery isn’t done until the disk herniates. Surprise — this doesn’t look good for the rest of Scut’s contract. If it actually herniated, it’d be better for the Giants, most likely. Surgery would be needed, and fix the problem. A friend had a herniated disk repaired after a long period of pain and therapy (he walked like Grouch Marx) until it finally herniated. He was playing golf in 2 months after surgery – pain free. Ask Tiger…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 21, 2014 at 3:27 pm

I mentioned on a previous thread, it really depends about which disc(s) you are talking. I have herniated C6, C7, and have had excellent results with epidural steroid injections. My understanding is that lumbar discs are more problematic (and it makes sense as they bear much more of the body’s load). I was going to try (and did) EVERYTHING under the sun before going under the knife. No way in hell I wanted surgery.

Hey, long-term I hope Scoots can just live somewhat pain free and lead a normal life. He took BP and infield the other day. They say he may be able to come back and do some pinch-hitting and play some late-innings, etc. That would be cool…especially after rosters expand. I just cannot see burning a spot on the 25 with him playing only in a limited mode, though.

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 1:37 pm

I doubt they do anything with Arias right now. He’s signed through 2015 with a guaranteed $1.45M in 2015. Bad move by Sabes on that second year. Anyway, he’s versatile on IF defensive positions. Hicks is only signed this year, making $525K. DFA him and they lose virtually nothing. Personally, I’d keep Hicks a bit longer and see if he comes around with some power. I was shocked to see this morning that Arias has had something like 83 ABs this season with NO, that’s ZERO extra base hits. Doh! Still don’t get why they don’t waive Adrianza. He’s been hitting a bit lately, but does anyone have confidence he’ll make a really clutch hit in a clutch situation? I’ve seen little to make me wanna keep the guy. He’s been in the system for what — 7 years or something? This far into his career, he’s not going to set the world on fire with newfound talent, is he?…

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 21, 2014 at 2:22 pm

Yes they can cut these guys and yes you can complain about in a couple of years when they start to hit. Conor Gillaspie anyone? And since I’m picking on you, why do you think the team owes you any detailed information on an injury? If I’m management and maybe even the players, I may not want the opposing teams to know the extent of injuries so why would I broadcast it? How does that benefit the team? The fans and the scribes are on a need to know basis and they don’t need to know. That’s my opinion anyway.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 2:33 pm

First, yeah, they can cut these guys. The GM’s job is to cut guys that aren’t producing, and get guys that will. Period. This is the big leagues. Gillaspie’s performing now, I don’t know why they couldn’t get that out of him when he was with SF. He wasn’t ready then and they had to move on? Yeah, probably. As far as Scutaro goes, the team owes me squat, but it owes the fans the truth, because they pay the freight. Or, at least something near the truth. As in not saying in ST that Scutaro will be ready by opening day, when they know damn well he has a bulging disk and hasn’t been able to get healthy the entire off season. How many people bought tix after that assuming Scutaro was in the season’s mix? You could see he was in deep shit with his back the first day interview he showed up in ST — he looked like a beaten man and was obviously down in the dumps. Do they need to tell us which vertebrae? No. Just don’t treat us like fools, tell something near the truth. Bozo, what advantage do the Giants lose to other teams by just saying he has a disk issue, when he hasn’t even been on the 25 since the start of the season. If he does eventually play, are the other teams going to throw at his disk?

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 21, 2014 at 3:03 pm

You’re the law guy, what medical conditions can be disclosed publicly if the player doesn’t want the details broadcasted? Do I want the other teams to know if I have an injury that hinders my swing on an inside pitch? Come on man, you act like it’s only the Giants. Why did Kemp’s injury make him less of a player? I don’t follow the Dodger scribes but I don’t recall hearing, he’s able to play but because (insert medical condition here) it’s not to abilities of the past, do you? My take on what you write is that it’s some great conspiracy or that this multimillion dollar organization only hires hacks to keep their investment on the field. I think there could be other resons.

And the Giants can’t develop players, did you want to get rid of Crawford when he didn’t hit? Belt? Were you sold on Pablo when they brought him up? I don’t recall you being pissed about the Gillaspie trade at the time, in his interview he said he needed to mature. Maybe, he wasn’t listening to the advise that he was given, I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s because of a lack of coaching skills within the Giants system and it sounds like you do.

This all came out sounding harsher than I wanted, so sorry about that, but I refuse to add a smiley face.
Take care and like you, I hope the Giants get a win tonight.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 21, 2014 at 3:32 pm

I’m with John on this one…and totally disagree with you snarkk. I don’t think the team owes the fans shit in regards to divulging details on an injury, etc. We can all agree to disagree on this one.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 4:02 pm

I don’t have a problem with your opinion, Bozo, not at all. No smiley face needed. I just have a different opinion, and I admit I am very picky when it comes to this medical stuff. What MLB teams can reveal to the press about player injuries is governed by the 2012-2016 CBA, Art. XIII(G)(4):

“For public relations purposes, a Club may disclose the following general information about employment-related injuries: (a) the nature of a Player’s injury, (b) the prognosis and the anticipated length of recovery from the injury, and (c) the treatment and surgical procedures undertaken or anticipated in regard to the injury. For any other medical condition that prevents a Player from rendering services to his Club, a Club may disclose only the fact that a medical condition is preventing the Player from rendering services to the
Club and the anticipated length of the Player’s absence from the Club.”

So, teams can tell us the truth about what’s going on in a general sense about the “nature of the injury”. Lots of money is at stake here. Don’t tell the fans Scutaro is going to be ready to play on Opening day in early March when fans are deciding on buying tickets for that game and for season tix, or that he’s 50-50 for the opener 10 days before it and right after he gets an epidural. IMO the Giants have a laundry list in recent years of questionable treatment of players with medical conditions, and being very coy to stubbornly vague to elusive about it to the press. It is one thing that really ticks me off about this team.

Other teams? When Kershaw came back from Australia this March, the Dodgers volunteered to the press that he had a “strained left teres muscle” behind his left shoulder. Pretty detailed as to the nature of the injury, they didn’t just say he had a “sore arm”. Their public info followed the CBA’s language about PR releases. Here’s a Doghair press release April 1: “After consultation with Dr. Neal ElAttrache and a review of the MRI scan, Kershaw will be placed on a rehab that includes a submaximal throwing program for the next two to three weeks. He will then be reevaluated by ElAttrache to determine when he can start throwing at increased velocity. The timetable on when he might return to Major League competition will be determined when he is reevaluated in two to three weeks.”

IMO Giants fans deserve the same level of disclosure as friggin’ Dodger fans…

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 21, 2014 at 4:39 pm

As I said earlier, we can agree to disagree. Outside of what is “required” per the CBA, I don’t have a problem with the way the Giants choose to disclose (or not) injury details.

Not the most ethical thing in the world for Scutaro to sign that 3-year deal without disclosing his back problem to the Giants. Fine, I can look at the $18 million as a nice bonus payment for his 2012. Nothing can change the magic of 2012.
But he did leave the Giants hanging at secondbase, which they’re still trying to fix. What bugs me a little is his trite answer to a sportswriter the other day. When asked what’s wrong with his back, Scutaro told the reporter: “20 years of playing baseball.”
Har dee har har. That’s really funny to Giants fans.

zum, do you know that management didn’t know about his disk? Maybe they knew, and didn’t think much of it, went ahead anyway. They had to know at least that he had an issue with one leg shorter than the other, I should think, which can lead to back problems. Players supposedly get physicals before signing contracts. If they did know about his disk and gave him that deal, that was arguably a foolish risk to take for that kind of coin…

      • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on June 21, 2014 at 2:59 pm

Murph’s got some moves, dude. Do you remember that scene on CSNBA during the playoffs (2010 I think), where Jamie Sire was shooting outside the Giants clubhouse and Murph walked shirtless across the shot in the background? The media make a lot of mileage out of that one. Whatever happened to Jamie Sire — she could qualify as a BBOTD…

About discs and shit, if Scoots has something wrong in the L5 area, that’s a major problem. I have compression fractures on L-4 and L-5, and a bulging disc between them, and there are times I can’t walk. All it took (after 2 weeks of moving) was sitting on the ground too long, and everything went haywire. I could barely walk for 2 days, and I finally went to an urgent care clinic. The doc there gave me a shot of Toradol. Lifesaving shit, that Toradol. Although I hear NFL players are suing over the use of that to get guys back into games.

It didn’t fix everything but it got me to the point where I could walk without excruciating pain. After that, it has been chiropractors and ibuprofen.

Belt is looking like early July?

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 4:35 pm

Sheez, Chuck, you just gave more info about your back than the Giants gave about Scutaro’s back in 6 months. Sounds nasty, good luck, get healthy. Maybe you need to go to Miami and get some platelets.
Yeah, the last I saw was Belt being ready the first week of July. Giants did admit he had a broken finger and had surgery with a pin. I’ll give them credit for that…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 21, 2014 at 4:35 pm

Belt is gonna be here by July 1/2 for sure.
Scoots was there yesterday but he said he’s still not able to do much. He might be done but I keep looking at that 90% contact rate and if this guy can cobble himself together for even one at bat a game every 2 or 3 days, he could be a huge secret weapon for us off the bench as a PH. That is, if he could actually make his way out of the dugout. He’s got 4 other 2nd basemen to push out of the way to get to the on deck circle. 🙂

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 4:41 pm

I’m glad you focused on that 4 2dbasemen angle. I would not have thought of it. That is mind boggling, when you think about it. Why not bring a guy like Duvall up? He’s raking at Fresno. Maybe if he just says he can play 2b, Sabes will get him up here…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 21, 2014 at 4:48 pm

to me, it would be kinda a waste to burn an option on Duvall at this point. 2 weeks? What’s the point, Belt might be back in even less than 2 weeks……
And Duvall might end up being one of those guys that shuttles back and forth a lot early in his career. And we know how bound to that *LAST OPTION* the Giants are. God forbid they get to that point. lqtm.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 4:55 pm

I would probably not be a good GM. At least not a patient one. When I see guys that are at 22-25 level on the depth chart just doing squat for half a season, and they’re at the MLB minimum or a little more (Adrianza, Arias, Perez), if I’ve got a possible division winning squad I would have no problem dumping their asses back down or DFA and bringing a guy up from the minors that’s raking. No time like the present…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 21, 2014 at 5:01 pm

it’s a balance of AAA depth and bringing guys up when they’re ready. Most of these GM’s know who is going to take it to the next level and who isn’t, It still surprises me that they DF’A Dunning but maybe it was just a sly way of working out a trade for him.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 21, 2014 at 5:15 pm

I looked. Duvall’s on the 40 man. They could bring him up, he’s in his first option year anyway, I’m assuming he was optioned down to the minors at the end of STraining. So, bringing him up or not is the same result in terms of burning an option year…

it’s basically 10 days to either trade him (if he gets claimed) or release him or send him back to the minors (if he doesn’t get claimed). he’ll definitely get claimed so maybe they can work out a deal.

Based on my read of MLB rules and a Wiki article, the player can be traded within the 10 day waiver period anytime before his team puts him on waivers. This gives teams that are down the waiver list a chance to make a trade for a player they want, if they figure he will be snapped up on a waiver claim by a team above them on the list. But, I believe he must be placed on waivers within the first 7 days of the 10…

Segura (the final run) had gotten hit in the back on a HBP in his first at bat (probably for hitting 2 bombs yesterday). He was looking to jab the knife into the Rockies and he found a perfect op to do it. That wasn’t that ballsy of a move with the P up and 2 outs. He broke up a double play earlier too, coming in HARD to 2nd.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 21, 2014 at 5:47 pm

and that was no wild pitch, it was a passed ball all the way. It was literally one of the worst plays by a defense I’ve ever seen–at least since little league. Rutledge, who had already committed 2 errors in the inning, should have gotten a mental error for not busting it down the line to back up the shitty throw from McKendry. I don’t think he could have gotten there, but he should have tried to back up the play at least. And then he woulda gotten the ball instead of that dejected shitty pitcher and he might have been aware enough to not let Segura score…..
