Stop Getting Injured
Last night was sweet although my celebration is a bit muted with the ongoing Pagan back problem and the new oblique problem (that’s what it looked like to me) that Mcode38 incurred in an at bat last night. He’ll be off today and with Pagan set to hit the DL, we aren’t coming out of the injury woods, we are still wandering inside of them….
We can only hope that the strong powers of DumpyAss can shepherd us through this injury riddled season. She did her job last night and I expect her to dutifully perform again today…..
Panik start today. Should be a lot of fun for the kid as well as his family and his glove that, hopefully, finally arrived in Arizona…..

Thoughts from the Crew on the idea of adding Klay Thompson to the Kevin Love talks?
I much rather have Harrison Barnes obviously in the deal than Klay but at the end of the day, Love on my mind is a Top 10 player and Curry certainly is. Klay would be a key contributor in combination with them but not a top 10 player on his own. Draymomd is the one guy that is too valuable to add to a deal because is a diamond they found and I believe is one of the best defenders I have ever seen and can play multiple positions.
I think the story that Jerry West and Kerr are opposed is a negotiating strategy and the Warriors will pull the trigger if they cant pull Klay from the trade. They Warriors can always tell Klay he has a home if he retains hi free agent status I think after next year. Kevin Martin will be a servicable two guard off rhe bench but Iggy would be the starter and crunch guy with Draymond playing the 3 in crunch time.

Hopefully the GM trusts the Logo and his newly hired coach on this one. I don’t think Klay is replaceable, whereas imo Dubs would do just fine without Love.
I think West has seen plenty of guys like Love, who put up nice numbers but aren’t *winners* And I’ll go back to Bill Russell’s statement—“Everyone wants to win but not everyone is willing to do what it takes to win.”

And yes, very cool about Panik starting today. How subtle, the G’s in a free fall, and the guy they bring up to help right the ship has a last name like that. I like. Despite these injuries, Pagan’s being the most worrisome, this is often when these guys come together, and it’s time to re-establish leadership in how the West is won.

Didn’t it hafta come down like this? Pressing the Panik Button once the team took their huge nosedive, with injuries springing up right and left, sputtering starters and even consecutive closer collapses. Classic situation. Joe Panik to the rescue. More likely than not the kid starts today batting in the 8 spot. Low-pressure zone. If he can remain calm and stick to his stuff Joe will get on base today with say, a walk and a single. If this kid does not get seduced by dreams of longballitis, he should do just fine.
Ultimately, i see Panik batting second. He has excellent OBP chops, what with his barrage of singles and his nearly one to one BB-K ratio. Chances are he has been coached to advance runners and similar strategems calculated to enhance the utility of a punch and judy hitter. It’s also possible to project this newest addition to the team as one of those guys who drives opposing pitchers nuts, working the count and being a general pest at the plate. Every team needs at least one hitter who takes such a conservative, measured approach at bat. Even in the 8-hole role during his earliest days if Panik can average drawing 6-8 pitches per at bat, whether or not he gets on base, he can contribute mightily.
A 4:10 start back East here is greatly appreciated today. I hope the Snot rockets are firing from both nostrils today.

Last night I was coaching b-ball, heard some of the start on radio, got done at 10 flipped game on and it was still going on and caught the end driving home. Which made it past 1 AM back there, right?
Went to bed at quarter to two, willie. In the old days that wasn’t so bad, these days I’m more of a wimp.
Bochy just said on pre-game he “hopes” Pagan might be ready for the Diego series. Has had numbness in his foot, and epidural didn’t do as much as hoped. I appreciate that report, downer that it seems. Numbness in feet is not a good sign where backs are concerned. Meanwhile, insert my usual rant about why the Giants don’t just DL a guy, but carry his ass for half a dozen games without bringing up a substitute, and play games while down a roster spot to the other team. Perez could have been yo yoed up into the 25 a few days ago. Winning games is hard enough with 25, with 24 you’re giving the opposition an unnecessary advantage…
I guess they think day to day means just that as opposed to 2 to 3 weeks by 2 to 3 weeks.
I don’t quite understand what you mean. Anyway, they could put Pagan on the DL retroactive to the last game he played a week ago, and get Perez in here for a few days to round out the roster and at least have an extra body available to PH or PR, or play D in the OF, until Pagan comes off the DL…
Snarkk, a lot of this has to come from player’s communication with bochy etc. Hey I think I can go/mm no still doesn’t feel quite right. All these guys want to play and likely resist the DL pretty strongly. Tough job to weigh whether he can be ready soon or have to play without him. Hindsight, sure.

I get it willied. But, that’s what the head trainer is for, cut through the player’s BS. At some point, the manager has to decide what’s best for the team. Play 3 games down a man to the opposition, OK, not good, but doable. A week, 10 days playing the “day to day” thing? Too long, IMO. Bite the bullet, DL the guy and get a body in here…

Really hoping Panik pans out over the next few weeks. It would be a real boost to have a 2nd basemen that’s just steady in the field and at the plate. Don’t need flash, just steady, and stabilize the position…

Excellent victory. Two straight. Could be that June is back in tune and goodbye swoon. Home cookin next with Reds and Pads. Cain needs to come around to keep the good vibe moving from road to home. Yesterday’s win was teetery. Today’s W. was triumphant ~ save a few anxious moments in the 9th when Bumgarner ran outta steam, not being aided by that throwing error. Through 8 Senor Snotrockets was masterful. Ace performance.
How bout that kid? Sweeeeet. Sportswriters are gonna go half crazy not getting their knickers in a knot over not being able to push the Panik button more than once in a while. But hell, this is the Flap and my take is that prospect hit The Show running ~ or at least adequately fielding his position and providing that sting in the tail of the lineup. He keeps that up and Pence may not be long for the two-hole. The scenario will advance if Belt returns in full form or even close to it. Should Crazy Horse’s treatments work out for him to be able to play, lets say five of every 7 games, Blanco should be good for the other two. Morse comes around okay and i could even see Colvin getting some starts in CF. Tyler was a nice little dumpster dive on the part of Sabean and his scouts.
At 45-30, with a four game lead and heading back to the Bay things is once more looking up in Gigantica.
I just read the Padres fired GM Josh Byrnes. San Diego finished 76-86 in each of Byrnes’ first two seasons. I would be interested to hear San Dawg’s take on this move. Me? I’m not certain this is a good move by the Padres. Under Byrnes, the Padres payroll increased nearly $40 million to $89,881,696 on Opening Day this season, but that’s only good for 23rd overall in MLB. Couple that with being in the same division as our Giants and the Bums, where both payrolls are significantly higher. After finishing with 76-86 records in his first two seasons, the Padres are 32-43 and 12½ games back in the NL West during an injury-plagued season.
Now, if this move were made by the Rockies, who’ve had Dan O’Dufus in the GM slot for over 14 years, I would say “Finally, a good move by the clueless Sherpas.” However, I think the Pads deserved to give Byrnes one more season. Anywho, that’s my take.
It was probably a rift behind the scenes between him and ownership. He certainly didn’t do anything visible to get axed. Maybe they fought over payroll and he said something he shouldn’t have said. Or maybe he was banging someone he shouldn’t have been banging. who knows. Doesn’t really matter either way, the Pads can’t compete in the NL West over the course of an entire season. Payroll will always be too big of an obstacle.
Panik looks good after one game. He’s got a good approach at the plate. Doesn’t look overmatched. Solid, not flashy in the field. Give the league a week to figure him out at the plate, then we’ll really find out if he can stay up…
It was always a no-brainer call up. They had 2 guys who were black holes at 2nd. He was hitting over .300 at AAA. If the league figures him out, so be it. He’ll still be better than Hicks or Adrianza….
and think about it: you can still strike out 40% of your at bats and remain on the roster. That shows how low the bar is for second base on this team…..

Will the league figure Panik out? He strikes me as the cogitative type. Student of the game type. Into the culture and perhaps a bit of the magic already. Second Base is pivotally key to the poetry of an acute infield. Panik could be the homegrown fit. He more than fully realizes his role is not that of busting down the barn door. Today’s RBI double tells us he’s not strictly punch and judy. Does he choke up on the bat? Inquiring minds could almost envision this kid as cut out from the type of baseball which probably peaked in the 20’s, just at the time when Babe Ruth made the homer King.
Poetically again, Panik almost represents a mythological character. 2nd base has been a long-running sore for SF. Robby Thompson kinda set a pattern. He too was a bit of a throwback to a vintage form of baseball. Retro. That monicker would fit a playmaking, glove-flipping contact hitter who aims to hit em where they ain’t.
That’s my read of the new kid in town. Hope he hangs around for a bunch of while. Last couple times the Giants had a sparkplug playing and batting second they won all the marbles.
Course we don’t know for sure yet. Baseball tosses a topsy-turvy turn of events at the darndest times. But it is just possible that the keystone has just been set into the arch. Got a feeling about this kid. Steady Eddie Bressoud played for the original version of the S.F. Giants. Some players have a level of inner harmonics which has a positive influence on the entire rest of the team.
Sandoval, Crawford, Panik and Belt. Mark that down. That could be some infield.
