A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Cardinals Come to The Phone Park in Hell

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 1, 2014

Well, whether the sun has set or not on the 2014 Giants season, we still have 80 games left to play, starting tonight v St Louis. And if you look at it that way, we either have plenty of time to right this sinking ship or plenty of time to tread water in the sea waiting for the sharks to come devour us–long one of my greatest fears. Is there a worse way to die? Maybe getting chopped up in a wood chipper? Anyway, I digress.

The Cardinals are throwing another pitcher at us that we know nothing about. Marco Gonzales who was their first round pick LAST year. He’s the first player from that round to make it to the big leagues and I don’t know about you, but I am tired of the Cardinals churning out dominant pitcher after dominant pitcher from their farm system.

Let’s light this fuck up.

The latest BBOTD, the one that I think holds so much promise, gets her first test tonight……..

BBOTD looks like a solid lottery pick to me. Someone who can turn around the fortunes of a franchise in freefall. We shall see.
I sent to the Pads game last night where they got one hit and beat Latos—which was actually fairly entertaining. Young 1B for the Pads Tommy Medica, who went to Bellarmine and Santa Clara was the guy who drew a walk, stole second, took 3rd on a not-real-deep flyout to CF and then came in on another SF. It was great baserunning–especially by a 1B. Hopefully the Giants can start scratching out some runs like that.
School year ended for me yesterday. On the road to Morro Bay tonight and then to SF tomorrow to pick up my daughter who is spending a couple of days with my Big Sis in the city. Might actually attend Giants game tomorrow night, though I’m with Flav on the feeling that the sooner this nightmare homestand ends the better. Who knows, maybe a new month and a new BBOTD will turn things around.

…also, congrats to Rajai Davis on his walk-off grand slam last night. The Giants have had many many journeyman outfielders come throughtheir organization over the years and Rajai was one of my very favorites. Good for him.

His joy as he got to first base was as unbridled as it gets. I was genuinely happy for him– although, I remember him as someone who resembled a batter trying to swing at a swarm of bees in the batters box. Can’t believe his career has gone on this long and how awesome would it be to have him instead of Blanco right now?

Agreed. Giants let younger guys go that somehow later develop, and pick up older guys that are undeveloping…

A few days ago, I had mentioned and posted a Fan Graphs article about Lincecum’s problems stemming almost entirely from the stretch. Essentially, 180 degree difference in (negative) results versus him pitching out of his windup. Here is a great Baggs interview of Righetti which confirms the aforementioned issue; as well as some key comments about Cain’s issues,, which Righetti believes have been resolved.

Nice article, one of the best I’ve seen on what the Giants do with their pitchers. Rags somehow takes crap from the general Giant populace, he’s solid. The way the Giants work, you keep good pitchers and the pitching coaches together, they can work through things because they know each other well. Sometimes, a new eye, an objective eye, is good to observe and suggest. Here, the consistent treatment seems to work. I’m concerned with the aging of this staff, though. I think next season could be rough…

Hopefully the June Swoon does not become the July Cry. But I thought at the start of the season we were a .500 team and maybe if we can stay .500 the rest of the way, we can land on the wild card, but something tells me that is not likely going to happen.

I’m tired of hearing all the deification of the Cards and their system. Losing to Red Sox last year was bad form.
Giants handled them in their yard first time around, and LA kicked their ass 3 out of 4 over the weekend. Thx a lot for helping them into first.
Their offense is ranked 12th in the league, they are dead last in HRs 12th in slugging 10th in OPS. This despite playing in a hitters yard/division where there are a lot of same. Yes they have some good young players in Carpenter and Adams, but also still hanging onto Holliday and signed roid boy Peralta in their rotate a SS every year program.
The kid we saw Taveras still only has the 1 HR and 2 rbis in 40 trips to the plate. The Wong kid hasn’t worked out and neither has their trade for light hitting Bourjos. Their bench features Mark Ellis. Not impressed.

Their pitching is very good, but it’s not led by kids, it’s Wainwright. Miller has an ERA over 4.00 and so does the Martinez kid that starts on Thursday. Wacha is on the DL–he’s only thrown 90 innings in 15 starts. Their pen has been solid but SF beat it as I recall in the earlier series.

Despite their struggles Giants still have better record and run differential. Only wish it was LaRussa’s ass they could kick as opposed to Matheny a good guy in an org I can’t stomach.

  10. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 1, 2014 at 10:04 am

Thanks for the depressing read Blade. For argument’s sake, if the farm is this bad, why would the Rays or Cubs trade either Price or Smardjeelingdong?

If we stay on this plummeting course and seem to have as bad of a farm system as ranked, what do you think Blade of going through a full dump and acquire as much prospects as can be had for our talent???

Cain would I think bring the most back in terms of prospects. Someone in the AL would probably grab Lincecum. Romo is now not likely staying on as our future closer. If healthy, he may be a valuable trade target.

Damn I think someone like the Nats may be willing to part with some upper tier prospects for Hudson. I would float Pagan out there as well. And would even be willing to see what I could get for Panda. Even Morse should be dangled if we continue on this nightmare streak.

I would build around Posey, Pence, Panik and Belt for the lineup. So we need legit leadoff and power bats after that. Not much on the forthcoming free agent market outside of Nelson Cruz maybe, so maybe it is time for full rebuild.

Out of Cain, Lincecum, Romo, maybe Hudson, Pagan and Panda, I think we could get 15 prospects and half of them upper tier and hope 5 of them can be big league caliber.

Thoughts? Those savings add up to $61 mill in payroll savings next year and add in the $6.3 mill in Romo’s contract this year and Panda’s $8.2 mill, that is an extra $14.5 mill. That adds up to $75 mill in savings.

I could do a lot with $75 mill over the next couple of seasons. Maybe there is another Tanaka waiting to be had.

Also, I want to see Hembree up and seeing if he can be a closer or not.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 1, 2014 at 10:06 am

Forgot about Morse and Voggy’s expiring contracts, so that is $11 mill more…$86 mill total…

    • salty's avatar salty said, on July 1, 2014 at 10:17 am

You’re right GH. They aren’t getting Price , Samar without top shelf prospects.

      • salty's avatar salty said, on July 1, 2014 at 10:27 am

But think you’re dreaming about unloading Tim Cain Romo etc for a bushel of top prospects. Cain and Tim salaries Hudson’s age, Romo is a FA…trade value is negligible, IMO. And they would be chewing on greenbacks for days.
The only guys another team would covet given age salary (controllability) are Belt and Crawford and of course Bumgarner.

      • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 1, 2014 at 10:45 am

I dont know Salty. What would the Blue Jays give up for Cain to maybe make a real deep run. Nats would love a vet like Hudson as a rival to the Braves to solidify their rotation and add depth for a playoff run.

and there are always dumb American League teams…Yanks or Red Sox would not covet a Cain???

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 1, 2014 at 10:20 am

GH, I agree with the writer that our prospects suck wind. Moreover, the stats unequivocally state this. Even our current call ups – Panik and Duvall – he calls no better then a utility singles player (Panik) and someone (Duvall) who “plays third base like someone with vertigo” and a minor league career that would translate to a slash line of “something like .235/.290/.500 in the majors.” Ugh.

That being said, I have no idea how Sabes would get USDA Prime Beef (e.g., Price) with these losers. More important, this article – which most Flappers read this morning, but you may not have – is pertinent:

      http://www.sfgate.com/giants/article/For-Giants-any-help-via-trade-is-unlikely-to-be-5591175.php

The cliff notes version is “If history is a guide, Sabean will say, “This front office helps those who help themselves.” Also, I liked this line, “Somebody needs to pay,” Hudson said Sunday after Cincinnati swept the Giants in four games at AT&T Park. “We need to beat the brakes off somebody.”

I am not giving up on this season, but the Giants have to show a pulse if they think Sabean is going to help out. For the last few weeks, this team hasn’t shown squat (collectively).

Not giving up yet with my heart, my bigger head thinks differently. Probably the first time in my life that we have numerous players that could fetch numerous prospects and maybe no need to keep these vets…

Even with the recent tailspin, I think it way to early to think about blowing-up the team. Keep the core. Try to add a quality starter (or two). Get Belt and Pagan back healthy, and make a fucking run at this thing.

  11. wswins's avatar wswins said, on July 1, 2014 at 10:08 am

I’m tired of all the fawning over Pagan. 3-10 without him means they were 1-5 with him. Maybe his health is an excuse but I seem to recall him blowing the first 2 games of this miserable stretch with an ill advised throw to 3b with a 2 run lead, and then allowing a single to become an inside the parker the next day, and then not owning up to either mistake…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 1, 2014 at 10:40 am

Good point. when he plays WELL they’re fine– in SF Ws (36) he has OPS of over .900 with .411 OB and .500 slugging. Contrast that with 21 Ls, where he has .502 OPS, .205 BA and OB of ,263.

So It isn’t just when he is in there, it’s when he’s in there and doing good. Last month June he got into 12 games and hit .234. That’s not helping from any spot in LU. Those last games before he hit the DL weren’t good, the mistakes on D and lot of pop flies to LF.

    • gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on July 1, 2014 at 10:40 am

WS, the isssue with Pagan was he was possibly hurt when he missed on that line drive for the ITPHR. Other than 163-124 when he plays (39 games over .500), 53-66 )13 games under) when he doesn’t, there’s not much else to go by. I get that there are coincidences, but that’s a pretty huge statistical set of anomalies.

GH, 0.5 out of 1st, even with the free fall, itsn’t time to sell the farm.

Regardless of how shitty this stretch has been, they still can make something of this season.

If they continue to crater? Well, yeah. Other than I’d hold on to Pablo. There’s nothing in FA and there’s nothing on the farm that remotely resembles what Pablo brings. Fat or not.

Thing is, they’d be eating a ton of Cain’s salary to deal him, and he’s not exactly a hot commodity. Same with Timmy. They are both at the ‘back-of-the-baseball-card’ phase of their careers. Someone might drop a mid-level prospect or 2 for a pennant drive, but they aren’t getting a blue-chipper (or even Nipper) for either.

Hembree is doing OK this year in AAA but he’s been there for 3 years now. If they do being him up, it’s not going to be to close. There’s not any room anyway. Unless they DL someone in the pen.

Blow up the team and go into a complete rebuilding process, on July 1st, based on some blogger’s analysis of the farm? Really? Wow.

We haven’t even gotten to the AS break, we are a half a game out of first for the Division, two games up for the Wild card and you’re ready to concede? Again, wow.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 1, 2014 at 11:23 am

John, I agree with you – no way, no how, am I ready to concede. However, your other point is only half accurate, i.e., yes, the writer is a blogger, but it is based upon rating services that mirror everything he wrote (as snarkk alluded to below). More important, one only needs to look at their statistics (position and pitching) to see that our top minor league prospects are scuffling (and I am being kind by using that word).

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on July 1, 2014 at 1:08 pm

        From the article.
“Preseason, Baseball America ranked the Giants’ system at #19 in baseball; Baseball Prospectus had us at #22. Given that most of the top prospects have struggled and/or been injured, it’s hard not see the Giants being a #25-30 system in baseball. If the team needs help in the 2nd half of 2014, it’s unlikely to come from inside the system. And, that could be significant because the Giants rarely make blockbuster deals.”

Going with Baseball Prospectus #22 ranking. They have the Twins and Cubs at 1 and 2 (how’s that working for those guys?). The Yanks, Brewers, Braves, Oaktown and Detroit to name a few that were ranked below us. All in the hunt and I bet, will be able to make trades from the dregs of their farm systems?

What I’m reading from Chris Quick is that we don’t have the ready talent to replace players now.
If he’s saying we don’t have any prospects that we can trade, I don’t agree with that one bit. Yes, Crick is off right now but you guys are saying we can’t find a trade partner for him before the trade deadline or some of the other players mentioned? Sorry, I just don’t buy that.

  18. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 1, 2014 at 11:14 am

That link to the article from blade on the SF minors system is the latest confirmation of what ratings services have been saying for quite some time. The cupboard looks bare in starters and position players for the next 2 seasons. They could be wrong, maybe somebody will step up out of the blue. But, 4 of 5 Giants starters have extensive wear on their arms. I don’t see Voggy coming back next season. Hudson and Timmy are contracted through 2015, but at Huddy’s age and Timmy’s inconsistency, those two have a lot of ifs going into next year. Panik looks so far like he’s probably a utility guy, with gap power at best, not a starter quality 2nd baseman. Duvall may be the next Pill. Mac Williamson seems intriguing for OF help, but he just had TJ surgery, and he’s not even in AA. As for current guys, Panda has the upper hand. Nobody to push him from below, so he has contract leverage over Sabes, even if he finishes around .275 or whatever it looks like now. I don’t get why the Giants farm system has gotten to this point. They’ve got all the money in the world as far as MLB teams are concerned. With their big revenue, they should have a ton of money to get great scout coverage nationally and internationally to beat the band. Maybe they have the coverage, but the scouts aren’t very good? There is no good reason they should have a farm system that everybody paying attention to it ranks in the 20s, even high 20s. There should be at least a few diamonds in the system, but it looks like its full of zircons. To keep competitive for playoff spots the next few seasons, looks like the Giants will have to plug holes and hope with FAs…

      Good summary snarkk.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 1, 2014 at 11:26 am

If a heavy FA plan is the plan, so be it. You can win if you pick the right FAs. Sabes has been hit and miss on that. A bad farm system not only means you can’t replace front line players on the cheap, it means you’ve got a crap bench and you’ve got little margin for error. So, when you have injuries to starters, you’re vulnerable, as in the past few weeks…

It just goes to show that baseball is an insanely hard game to play at the professional level. And it is even harder to pick the wheat from the chaff. Granted, some teams have greater success than others at drafting, but for years the kncok on the GIants was they weren’t home grown. This is about as homegrown a team that is out there now.

Romo was what, a 28th rounder? Pick the top 10 of ANY draft, and what are there? 2 or 3 that scratch the bigs? Maybe 1 superstar every 3 years? Just the fact that it usually takes 3-4 years to even sniff the pros as a #1 pick says a lot about how hard it is to get there.

Yeah, they should draft better. But they’ve done well for the past 8 years. Hard to say how it shakes out inthe next couple years.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 1, 2014 at 11:38 am

I’m sure it’s out there, but I don’t know where. A stat that shows how many of the current 25 on MLB teams are home grown, and broken out pitcher v. position player and by starter v. bench. Like to see where all the teams shake out in that…

The 9 1/2 game lead disappeared in 3 weeks; that’s pretty epic, I guess. The weird thing is the Giants are still up on the Dodgers in the loss column. The Dodgers have played 3 more games than the the Giants. It could be argued that the Giants are still in the better position in the standings, at the moment.
But there’s still that whole “winning some games” issue. Some of that needs to happen real soon.

  23. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 1, 2014 at 11:50 am

Current 25 that are home grown, at least that I can pick:
Bum, Cain, Timmy, Romo, Vogelsong (sort of), Posey, Hector, Craw, Duval, Panik, Panda, Perez. When Belt and Pagan are back, it’ll be add one and subtract one. So it looks like 12 of 25, or around 1/2 are home grown, depending on who’s up and who’s down this season. Of the starters, it’ll be Belt, Panik, Craw, Panda, Posey, an all home-grown infield. Starting outfield is totally sourced from elsewhere. Staff is about 50-50…

Funny how Belt has gotten ripped by lots of Giants fans in the past. Now, they can’t wait for him to get back and goose the team’s hitting. He’s tearing up AAA, but he’s not going to homer every game when he gets back up here…

Last minute winning goal by Argentina against the Swiss. As usual, Messi in the middle of the winning goal action. The guy is incredible, the Joe Montana of soccer? Take a look at the 15 to 20 second mark. Swiss guy must be thinking that “after all this, we’ve lost”. What a great shot of one side of sport, and the next shot is the opposite — sheer excitement of the Argentine club. There’s a lot about top pro soccer I find bogus, but there’s no doubting the emotion at this level of it…

When Flappers ask “What’s gone wrong?” they’re asking the wrong question about a team that’s simply finding its level. If they can manage to go 31-49 the rest of the season, though, they’ll improve on last year’s record. Baby steps, I guess…

Can Belt turn em around? His initials are not J.C. but B.B. so we aren’t talking all by himself savior here. In just a few games he has been lighting up minor league pitching (including at least one with MLB experience) with those three dingers. Early on he was waaay up there on the leader boards and looking to have a 30 HR season.

Initially it did not look like BB9’s absence was a big problem as Giants hitters went outta their heads and the bullies were nails. Gradually, the erosion set in and then, come the second week of June, the landslide. There is some similarity to when Posey went down in ’11. Again, starting out, Giants hitters did all they could to make up for the absence. In time, though, slippage set in.

So no, Belt is not getting cast as a savior here, rather a spark which could light up an otherwise dim and turgid lineup (Posey excepted lately). In games where Buster needs a break from behind the plate he can play first and Belt bumps Morse (done sub-nothing lately and likely needs a rest) from left field. One clutch double with ducks on the pond or one late-inning homer in a tight game and the entire psychology of this team changes ~ more effective perhaps than even Timmy’s no-no which was followed by good performances by the other starters but did not wake up the waterlogged offense.

One good blast may be what’s needed to get this engine humming again. Gawd only knows we sure need it.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on July 1, 2014 at 1:44 pm

Belt did have a great moment in his rehab, calling a HR for a cancer child and hitting one out, something a Dodger would never do!

I don’t profess to know soccer much at all. Somebody that does can maybe set me straight. This Michael Bradley dude, the bald center guy for the US team that gets/got a lot of pub, doesn’t seem anything special to me. He’s not quick, he can’t seem to control the ball under pressure, and his passes miss the mark a ton. Not to mention, I don’t think I’ve seen him shoot a shot yet, he has no goals. Seems OK on defending. Anybody?…

  42. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 1, 2014 at 3:37 pm

Hand it to the US team to get as far as it did. And, they didn’t have their best striker for essentially the whole tournament (Altidore). They definitely could have used him and Landon Donovan today. Last 15 minutes into extra time the US really brought it to Belgium like they didn’t the whole game before. Not sure what happened there. Maybe in 2018 the US will be geared up, have some better and younger players. Doubt they can have a better goalie — Howard was massive today. This Klinsman guy as coach definitely got the most out of what he had, though it seems not taking Donovan was a mistake, ego thing, especially since Altidore got hurt and couldn’t play essentially the whole tourney. Give Klinsman some better players, and who knows next time?…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 1, 2014 at 3:49 pm

Wondolowski could have kicked one in from about 10 feet from the goalmouth with about a minute left in regulation, didn’t get it done, was a hard chance. If that had gone in, at that point it would have been a crazy win, the US was totally outplayed during regulation…

My main man Brian Gramling of ESPN says this about “No No” Timmy . . .

“In Lincecum’s past seven starts at AT&T Park, he has not given up more than three runs in any of those outings while compiling a 4-1 record with a 2.17 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 8.7 K/9. The former Cy Young Award winner has also pitched very well against the Redbirds in his career, going 5-1 with a 2.89 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 9.6 K/9. And after scoring 22 runs in a three-game set at Coors Field last week, St. Louis managed just four runs in four games at Dodger Stadium, fanning 41 times with a slash line of .188/.235/.289. Coming off the no-hitter and being opposed by Marco Gonzales — who gave up five runs and nine baserunners to the Rockies in his major league debut.”

Consequently, I am streaming Timmy in Fantasy League (i.e., I picked him up off the waiver wire heap) and I fully expect him to kick ass on the Cards. If our hitters don’t do a face plant, we should win. Book it!

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 1, 2014 at 5:53 pm

Timmy got destroyed the next start after his no hitter last year. It happens more frequently than you’d think to no hitter pitchers

      • stickman's avatar stickman said, on July 1, 2014 at 6:57 pm

I’m assuming you mean “pitches” and you are correct. I’m just saying, guys don’t usually follow up no hitters with stud performances. Guys not named “Kershaw.”
Hey, he could do fine, maybe great, but I wouldn’t stream him tonight. That’s just me.

  53. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 1, 2014 at 5:57 pm

If I’m the Giants, I just have Scutaro pinch hit in every single minor league appearance. Let him sit around on the bench all day and see if he can pop up and give one good pinch hit a night. If he can do that, he’s good to go. But all this “play him 4 innings and try to stretch him out” shit is a waste of time. He can’t play a full game anymore.
But his contact rate is still impeccable and he could be a deadly pinch hitter for us off the bench. God knows our shitty bench could use hit bat late in a game……

  54. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 1, 2014 at 6:08 pm

If Pagan is out for a month or two or six while the spine specialists work on him, I’d try just about anything in center. Spare me more Blanco, more Perez, or even Colvin. These guys aren’t going to get much done. We’ve seen their stuff before. I could even go with bringing Gary Brown up and giving him a try — maybe the big league atmosphere would light his butt on fire or something. I dunno. But, if Pagan is out until the second coming like Scutaro, then Sabean needs to get creative, and soon. More of the SOS isn’t going to fix this problem. To me, the Pagan problem is far more critical than the 2nd base problem…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 1, 2014 at 6:33 pm

Gary Brown is a no go. He’s a guy who could hit the fastball-throwing class A league and then he showed his true colors. He sucks. It happens to a lot of guys after they get out of A league but he was a #1 so people expect more. But he just isn’t any good……
