A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Name that BBOTD

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 2, 2014

Well, whether it was the new BBOTD that put him over the top or just skill and experience, Timmy did what I didn’t think he would do: follow up his no hitter with a quality start. And man, we needed that. However it can’t just be “Tim for the Win” every 5th day. It’s time for more of his teammates to step up.

Normally, my confidence would be shot for a game like tonight’s against Wainwright. But I’m buoyed by the haunting afternoon haze of the newest BBOTD. The sun has set according to my dad, but as far as she’s concerned, the future is still brilliant and alive………

Someone needs to name her. Nominees go in the thread below…….

Nona? sort of like no no but different? speaking of no-no’s, one of the great things about last night’s outing is that, unlike his last start, Tim had to pitch out of the stretch which seems to be his achilles heel. He did a good job of holding runners and not serving up gopher balls.

The no hitter was one of his easier outings. He usually throws 113 pitches in 5 angst ridden innings. So not surprised he was fresh and strong last night.
Is it the opposition? Won’t know Sunday. He gets the powerful Pads at Petco.
He looks great and I’m still hopeful but been saying that throughout this 2.5 year ordeal. Will this time be different?
It had better be if they want to contend.

Destiny…June’s over and it’s an even year. And a name that starts with D in honor of those 32DDs

Once again command of pitches, esp the breaking ball by TL. Cards couldn’t lay off it and couldn’t hit it.

Watching Pence go balls out for that running catch, I’m convinced he could play CF if Pagan needs more time before he can come off the DL. Go get a corner OF (beside Colvin) and use Blanco as a D sub late innings.
With his OB Pence can hit lead off too and be a weapon with power in that spot. He runs well enough to steal a bag once in a while too.

Like Scoop Nisker of KSAN (etc) used to say, “If you don’t like the news, go out and make some of your own.”
And Giants quickly retake first place with great pitching, D and timely hits.

real world update: multiple injections, bulging disc specialists, out indefintely….
So what does Bochy say? We’re hoping to hear good news.
    What?
I don’t see how Pagan can perform at top level and not have setbacks. His game is speed. Running all out with a BD? Hello herniated disc.
Please prove me deadwrong on this one.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 2, 2014 at 9:25 am

Well, that’s all Boch CAN say. Don’t mean anything. They all know what’s really going on. In that Pagan’s out at least a month, if not the season. Rest could fix it, but not likely with the constant twisting and turning with hitting and the stress of running. Surgery would put him out anyway, so they should probably do that and get the recovery started.

Can they get to Wainwright again? So much depends on team morale. Last night had to be a big booster for that of the Giants. Timmy teriffic and middle of the order coming through plus a recovery inning by Machi all added up to a pretty good formula. Cardinals morale on the other hand may be going in the same direction Giants was for those three dead weeks in June. Their starting pitching alone is not sufficient to carry them and right now their hitters are in a funk due to facing some pretty nasty starters from the LaBumbos and last night, MomenTim.

Vogie is a tough competitor. There was a sign of life last night with the oppo double by Morse. Buster is in the groove, Pence is contributing and Panda’s 100th dinger has him striding with those cowboy boots. So maybe the team gets a couple runs off Wainwright before the pressure gets too intense on Vogelsong.

Finally, its no longer June. Swoon no way rhymes with July. A win tonight could well lead to a sweep. It would be huge. LaBumbos hafta look up again, particularly in the loss column. Belt is back in a couple days. Five good hitters in succession can be tough on almost any pitcher. Would have been nice to have that combo facing Wainwright. May just be, though, things are percolating a bit already.

From the Kruk and Kuip facebook page. Brian Sabean talking about the recent woes:

“The fact of the matter is, I can’t click my heels and make a trade. I can’t dip down into the minor leagues. We played our cards with Panik and Duvall and God bless them, but they’re not ready to be here. So it’s an impossibly frustrating place to be in, but it starts with what you have on hand and with the deck we’re playing with. They’ve got to play better and they’ve got to be more competitive and play better at home. If they don’t, then I guess turning into a pumpkin was bound to happen. But I still believe we have resolve and I still believe the effort is there. We just need more execution, obviously, in all departments.”

Sounds like he’s stonewalling for the moment.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 2, 2014 at 10:04 am

Whenever Sabes is on an interview, I just turn it off now. What’s this “deck we’re playing with” stuff? HE is the guy that secured the deck. His draftees, his trades. Whenever he talks, it’s as if the system he’s in charge of has been assembled by somebody else and dropped on him to deal with. Of course he can dip down in the minor leagues, in terms of trading whatever value he’s got there, which apparently isn’t much. I’m sure for Panik and Duvall it’s also nice to hear the ultimate boss has already decided via radio chat that you’re unworthy after two weeks up at the big club. Even with his success the past few years, Sabean doesn’t do much to ingratiate himself to the fanbase. The new BBOTD could come into his office and throw herself at him, and he’d criticize the color of her bikini as it came off…

Here is my question for Sabean: Why can’t you make a trade? The minor league talent is currency. It’s there to be spent. Spend it wisely, you will be rewarded. Spend it stupidly, you get what you pay for.
But just sitting on his hands after he fired off both his *bullets* (Panik and Duvall) and then to fucking give up is absolutely unacceptable……..

    Well, actually it’s the opposite.

Good cop/bad cop. We have a month before the deadline so I don’t think Sabean is throwing in the towel or sitting on his hands for the next month.

What does it say about a GM when he criticizes in public his recent callups as not being ready?
      1. Bad form to diss your own young guys in public.
      2. Desperation move, you had nothin’ else, so you threw two dudes you knew weren’t ready against the wall to see if they would stick (ala Belt).
      3. You didn’t know they weren’t ready, now that it’s clear to you they aren’t, your management looks bad for not knowing…

With both Panik and Duvall we are looking at a tiny sample-size as to their performance. This radio chat on Sabean’s part strikes me as both discouraging of his kids in the pipeline in general and lacking in diplomatic skills. Perhaps he had just enjoyed a 3 martini lunch and got a bit overly loquatious.

Well, the farm system has been denigrated here over and over, citing they are in the bottom rung, but now we think its good enough to make a blockbuster trade?

Sabean is just being realistic and candid,IMO.. Panik and Duvall are not impact players. And other GM’s are looking at who the Giants have and going, uh, Crick? After that, who?? Brown Hembree suck. Law had TJ. Escobar has struggled at AAA. Blackburn has been out. Williamson had TJ. Susac is at.250. High hopes for the young pitching prospects but they have not distinguished themselves.

Good post. I think you and I are the “lone rangers” on this issue. I think he is being candid as well. I’ve always related to the quote, “You can put a silver saddle on a jackass, but it is still a jackass.” Just my opinion, but I think it is amazing how many of you think he is denigrating Panik and Duvall, two rookies who haven’t accomplished anything . . . and yet at the same time, you are denigrating the guy who put together 2 World Series winners. Say what?

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 2, 2014 at 4:16 pm

Why denigrate them in public? Why not just go on twitter and tell the world and other GMs that these guys suck, so don’t even think I’m being serious when I offer them to you in a trade. Totally ridiculous to say so in public as a GM, for a multitude of reasons…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 2, 2014 at 4:21 pm

Snarkk, that’s just it – he didn’t denigrate them. He was being CANDID, which is quite a difference. Conversely, you’ve denigrated the best GM the Giants have ever had. Granted, most of us have taken shots at Sabes (I know I have), as well as Bochy. However, in light of his comments, I just don’t think he said anything which demeaned the two rooks. He basically told it like it is and did it in a nice way.

Don’t think he wants to repeat the Wheeler Beltran desperation hail Mary…unless the team is whole and proves they are for real. If Pagan is out, 2b continues to be a black hole and the closer situation is a mess, they have too many needs. Of course there is the SP, still a major ?

I’ll give Sabean “bad penny year” on Scutaro LAST SEASON; just about no one saw that coming with Scutaro. But this year, knowing what happened with Scutaro last season, it’s absolutely on the GM to fix the secondbase situation.
And, yeah, I don’t get the ‘Panik and Duvall were not ready’ comment, either. I have no idea what positive purpose that comment serves. Every once in a while, Sabean will make a complete ‘foot in mouth’ statement.

I really get off when they win games and championships. I criticize only when IMO it’s warranted. Two WS wins in 4 seasons is great, but it’s not permanent insulation for management’s bad moves or bad treatment of players, IMO. If I criticize management for not having a decent backup plan for 2b when they knew Scuts had a bad back, are you saying that’s off limits? What about management’s dubious treatment through their contracted concessionaire of the little people at ATT slinging the hot dogs and garlic fries. Off limits? Do I get credit for congratulating (I have) Sabes on nailing down Pence early for that LT deal at what now looks like somewhat of a steal? People differ in their opinions, that’s what this place is all about…

Snarkk, it ain’t any stretch to see that the call-ups floundered. And it isn’t terrible news from the GM that they did so. THEY know it. Bochy knows it. Their teammates know it.

All the other shit about clicking his heels and trades is just blather. There’s a month before the deadline. Maybe he’s beating the bushes and no one is responding yet and he’s frustrated. Or maybe he’s just talking to hear himself speak.

Point being, this next month WILL tell what happens going forward. If we go 10-16 this month (or worse) then we won’t be buyers. If we keep the lead or stay close to it, they will make a deal for a 2nd baseman/leadoff guy. David Price or some other huge deal? Doubtful.

Nice story going ’round about Sandoval and his lucky cowboy boots and his 100th HR. (Intriguing quote from Bochy, too, about hoping to see the next 100.) Should BBOTD be Sandy Wood? Annie “Get Your Gun” Pokeley? Also, did y’all hear about Pablo hitting the HR for Angie Lopez’s son on his birthday? (Speaking of birthdays, there is an annoying, semi-obscene pop song out about “wanna see you in your birthday suit.” Not sure what the chorus says, but it would not be shocking if it were, “Let me blow the candles out.” And no censor even blinks. Sigh. Getting old.)

As for Sabes, I find him to be a bit of a poker player. He loves to throw out a not-very-subtle challenge to his players and organization. I don’t think it worked too well for Felipe Alou, but he loved those “let’s see if they are men” throwdowns. Well, it did work, didn’t it? Certainly for the 2003 regular season. But to James’s frequent point, we do not have data to prove a manager’s words helped performance; maybe they even did that well DESPITE any words from the manager. Again, back to Brian Sabean: 2 World Series rings looms huge in my estimation of him. Plus, he is the longest-tenured GM. I will go even farther: I can see Bruce Bochy AND Brian Sabean both getting into the Hall of Fame. (I love how Bochy did not explicitly say he was removing Romo from the closer role; his words were along these lines: “Romo is a team player; he needs a change; we love him; we just need to lighten his load for a while; we need him.” Genius.)

Okay so over the years we have all talked about how much time to give a rookie to see whether he is ready to be in the Bigs. And the consensus was 250 at bats. So after 15 or so at bats Panik it is determined that he is not Big league ready?? Really. And I made this point in a previous thread. Why are we worried about whether the Giants 2nd baseman can hit when you have Belt, Pence, Posey, Sandoval, and Morse? Not to mention Crawford to some extent. Panik has played really well at 2nd base IMO. I don’t think the Giants need to worry about 2nd base as much as they need to worry about a CF and a leadoff hitter to back up Pagan. That should be the top priority. It appears that Pagan has become injury prone. Can’t make it through a full year of ball. So the Giants should be looking for his replacement. For the future also.

Hilarious how far Wilson has fallen. Love that he is on the Dodgers versus another team, i.e., the gift that keeps on giving. Almost like having a double agent in Russia. 🙂

    2. Pence RF

    5. Morse 1B
    6. Colvin LF
    7. Crawford SS

Fucking Blanco in the lead-off spot again. I would rather see Perez at this point…

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 2, 2014 at 4:01 pm

As others have said, it would be cool to see Blanco attempt one bunt hit per game. He fakes bunt sometimes when he’s taking a pitch all the way, but why fake the bunt? If he bunts once in a while, it will eventually get teams playing in more on the left side, and make a bigger hole in the D over there.
A bunch of us keep saying it. It’s like we’re spitting in the wind. He’s hitting .240 anyway, why not try it?

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 2, 2014 at 4:34 pm

Bochy’s just playing the lefty righty thing with Blanco, and Wainright going tonight. We’ll need to get used to it with Pagan’s back in a lockbox. I just wouldn’t leadoff with any of the usual suspects, put Blanco, Perez and whatever bench jockey is in for the night in the 8th spot. Pence can lead off, much as I don’t like it. He will have better OBP than the bench jockeys, and be a better table setter for the big bats early in the game…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 2, 2014 at 4:53 pm

Zum, maybe Bochy / Wotus get on guys asses if they bunt on their own and make out. Certainly a possibility. So, I can’t blame Blanco totally for not bunting more (at all?) without knowing what management tells him to do or not do. Per the beat writers and the Giants announcers, we know that Bochy basically doesn’t like bunting…

  50. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 2, 2014 at 3:55 pm

It got dicey at the end. The Dodgers rarely go down quietly in the 9th, at home. Visiting teams’ closers maybe get a touch of nerves with all the history of the stadium or something.

Regarding Dick Van Dyke, the first movie I ever saw in a movie theater was “Never A Dull Moment,” when I was probably 8 or 9 years old. I remember it being a magical experience. I’m sure the movie would seem a lot less than that now if I ever watched it again. But I do remember the audience enjoying the show.
IMDB website shows that “Never A Dull Moment” was the film he did right before “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” I rarely went to the movies as a kid, so I probably didn’t see “Chitty” until it came on TV years later. I remember liking it a lot. Van Dyke was pretty huge in the 1960s, but his career rolled on less remarkably after the ’60s. I never understood why he didn’t remain a bigger star. Maybe it was hard to shake the “Rob Petrie” image in the audience’s mind, and film producers’ minds. The Dick Van Dyke Show was so brilliant. Mary Tyler Moore was able to go on to her next big show, though, in the ’70s.
I never saw a single whole episode of Van Dyke’s “Diagnosis Murder” series. The little bit I saw seemed pretty mediocre; his talents wasted on sub-par material.

Somebody has to criticize Sabean, it’s part of my job description, along with Baer. 😉
Seriously, some of you guys think Sabes throws out criticism of dudes that barely know where the clubhouse men’s room is to motivate them? I would think Duvall and Panik are extremely motivated to learn quickly and do well up here without Sabean publicly torching their supposedly unready asses. I would think that if he sends them back to Fresno, that’s enough for everybody to figure out they’re not ready. I’d give them another few weeks and 100 ABs, especially Panik, before saying they’re not fully baked yet. Duvall goes down when Belt’s up, so what’s the point of roasting him as unready in the media right now? Harbaugh NEVER criticizes or critiques the quality of his players’ performance in public. He’ll say something if they don’t show up for mandatory practice, but criticizing their quality of play is out of bounds for him, and I respect that…

So you want Sabes to say next ? when asked about the state of the rooks or team..or turn a deaf ear…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 2, 2014 at 4:48 pm

As for the rookies, particularly guys that just got off the bus at ATT midseason, what’s so hard about saying “we’re evaluating their progress”. That’s it. Or something similarly innocuous. Sabean is very good at blathering a lot of words with no meaning. Then, onto the next question. He can burn the team down as a whole in the media to his heart’s content, if that’s his bag (“bad penny year”, whatever). Fine with me. But, individual criticism of a player directly by a GM in the media is off limits IMO, particularly kids wet behind the ears. Why? I think it’s counterproductive if a player feels like management is dissing him publicly. Keep criticism and discipline in the clubhouse. If one on one doesn’t work, and management wants to light a fire under a certain vet player, they can always say something on background to the beat guys, who won’t name the individual source, but carry the message somewhat obliquely. That’s done through the media by just about all pro sports teams management, for various reasons…

      • wswins's avatar wswins said, on July 2, 2014 at 6:48 pm

I’m gonna address the “bad penny year” comment that so many here quote him on and have absolutely no understanding of what he meant by it, tomorrow when I have the time, don’t have a headache, and think most of you will read it..

Hey, about getting dfa’d? Pretty bloody publicly humiliating if you ask me. Big f- sign on your head saying “You Suck”.

Dodgers and Angels both in 2nd place, collective 22 games over .500.
Yanks and Mets collective 10 games under .500. Mets 4th (half game up on phils) Yanks 3rd

Oddly enough after four innings Vogelsong has a lower pitch count than Wainwright: 51-64. The Giants hitters have seen a lot of pitches. If they can keep it close and keep working the guy a breakthrough could happen in the 6th or 7th. Of course a blowout could happen by then as well. At least things are not as one-sided as the score and # of Giants hits would suggest.

  67. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 2, 2014 at 8:45 pm

I think Sabes does get defensive when questioned by the *lunatic fringe*…guys like Ostler etc. He likely is disappointed none of the original usual suspects is doing much at 2b–Arias Ehire Hicks Abreu. He probably wanted to wait more on Panik because he doesn’t think he’d be much of an improvement. Same with Duvall. Jury still out.
I said all along if he didn’t like what he has at 2b he would make a deal, but it’s likely more for a Mark Ellis/Theriot type of replacement vet, not a Chase Utley, but we’ll see.
I’d rather see him deal for a corner OF and move pence to CF than trade for Ben Revere type, but realize offense is at a premium these days, so it’s more a crapshoot as to who would thrive at ATT.
Picking up a quality SP is gonna be expensive and most teams want young pitching in exchange. As has been pointed out Giants top prospects haven’t set world on fire this year.
So he’s probably being realistic when he says good quality players aren’t readily available, yet. I’d settle for Chris Denorfia though, as opposed to Quentin or Headley or Marlon byrd.

As for his deals last couple, I mean look–Nate and a back up C for Pence?
Culberson for Scutaro (who hit .360)?
    Torres and Ramirez for Pagan?
    J Sanchez for Melk?
    Signing Hudson and Morse?
    Batting 1.000, imo.

Was just gonna make the same point. As i noted earlier today (and previously) it may not have been good to dismiss the kid after such a small sampling of his body of work. Sabean may have been using a bit of reverse psychology ~ but i doubt that. So here’s some egg on his face. One of our posters pointed to his errors. His minor league totals are not high. Most likely he was a bit edgy because he didn’t start hitting immediately in The Show. Like Belt and Posey Panik appears to be a very selective hitter and as i noted when he first came up, ultimately looks suited to bat second. Stoopid place for a hacker like Pence.
