A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Swept Away in San Francisco

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 28, 2014

The alarming part is that this was not a surprise, or should not have been a surprise, to anyone. Just like Uggla sucking worse than a replacement player should not be a surprise to anyone. Peavy pitched better than his results, I lay a lot of that on Buster. He has to do a better job of blocking balls and his half assed effort in looking Dee Gordon’s way led to a run being scored. You don’t look a guy back without the ball, dawg….

So that’s out of the way.

Now what?

Really both Buster and Jake struggled, probably more cause they don’t know each other well enough (1st time catching& throwing too each other)Peavy rushed in Saturday late,to save the day on Sunday to much to expect.
Hell Buster was shaky on some plays, but so was Peavy when he had a “Brainfreeze” moment, with a runner on 1st,and wasn’t looking at Posey for the throw back to him, cause he was yelling at the ump on the previous pitch being a ball!

    “Now what?”

    Good question. I got nothing.
Other than maybe to say that, at some point, it comes down to the team ownership. Ownership does matter, and it’s time for that group to think about what they just saw. The billionaires and millionaires that own the Giants have to face the reality of what they’re facing with the Dodgers. The Giants can’t have a Dumpster-Dive Special bench and hang with the Dodgers on into the future. The Giants also have to up their game in regard to the minor leagues and player development, and a better strategy in finding Latin American talent.
Yeah, its a bad break that Pagan and Scutaro went down this year. But there needed to be a plan for if and when that happened, and there wasn’t. That’s on Sabean, but it’s also on the ownership, because they obviously control the budget.

So, the season moves on. The Giants need a massive turn-around in this Pirates series. The playoffs are still a very doable thing, although it feels, at the moment, more like it’s going to be all about the Wild Card, unless Sabean can do something to fix centerfield and secondbase.
Bumgarner is the right guy at the right time to get things heading in a positive direction tonight.

Another good take, Zooms. Yes, it’s on the filthy rich, tightwad owners. They can match the art dealers dollar for dollar if they aren’t so concerned about maximizing their investments. There is a very good Cuban outfielder, something like Rumjug Castillo, who can be grabbed for maybe $35M. They say he’s MLB ready right now. Four tool type. Can play center. Strong. Maybe one step down talentwise from Puiggy but maybe a better clubhouse presence (that wouldn’t take much).

Don’t have a clue on internal scouting reports but i’m awfully intrigued by the idea of Matt Duffy taking over 2B. He’s tearing up the pitching potent Eastern League.

And what’s Larry Baer doing? He’s a kind of liaison between the ownership and Sabean. What if Baer took it upon himself to go to the ownership and make a strong case for Utley? Turn on that Baer passion and those talking skills. Shame the ownership, if need be, into spending more money.

    • stickman's avatar stickman said, on July 28, 2014 at 10:57 am

Baer is a promoter and a money-minded tool. If he can come up with more pandabear headdressings he will be a happy camper. Don’t think he’s the type to talk to the top of the totempole.

  4. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 28, 2014 at 7:43 am

Paul, as to Phillies OF, here’s my take:
Revere has an OB of .315, so in other words he doesn’t get on base more often than Blanco. He also has a crummy arm so another OF spot wouldn’t be good. Not near as good player as Pagan, and it wouldn’t make sense to have both in LU.

Brown had a great year last year, this year he sucks. The power stroke is non existent, he doesn’t get on base .280 OB and an OPS of .620. Which is actually worse than Blanco. He already gets to play in a hitters yard in warm weather—quite unlike ATT.

Byrd can still hit , definitely. But he’s basically a Morse type corner OF–if SF would play Pence in CF he could play RF but at ATT that’s not easy. He is also currently 36 and will make $8 mil this year and next year with likely vesting option for another $8 mil in 2016. He will then be 39, so you aren’t just talking about now, it’s $20 mil plus and paying a 39 year old OF. Time to get him would have been couple years ago and I’d say the same for Alex Rios. He’ll clearly be in demand and would help team while Pagan is out. When/if Pagan returns, then what? Platoon with Morse?

All of the above have potential short term benefits and would be *stop gap* type fill ins for Pagan, and of course get Blanco out of the LU which is what seems to bother everyone the most. But none of them are guys I would go out on a limb to acquire as long term solutions. And that’s type of guy I would trade for though offense is at premium these days.

Utley, completely different—top order hitter good fielder and worth every penny to have him in LU every day. Others just don’t do anything for me. If you feel differently I understand…Giants as presently constituted can be pretty hard to watch sometimes.

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 28, 2014 at 8:47 am

Problem with Utley is he is a 5/10 guy and can nix any proposed trade. And he has said he really likes playing in Philly, to boot. I don’t see him going anywhere, but you never know. If it was a team that had a good chance to win it all, he may change his tune.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 28, 2014 at 8:59 am

Yes, he has veto rights. But couple more years living in hot humid Philly in front of half filled stadium for a last place team where notorious boo bird fans constantly call out players and mgmt…vs. SF, where weather is milder, yard is full, and team is perennial contender with 2 rings lately?
Maybe I overstate things, but yowza. Phils I don’t see getting better before they get worse.

      • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 28, 2014 at 9:32 am

I agree WillieD, and that is why I added the caveat about going to a team with a chance to win it all. I would assume the Phils would pick-up part of the salary (what remains of the 15 mil this year, and 10 mil next year). Plus there are vesting options for 16-18.

    • stickman's avatar stickman said, on July 28, 2014 at 10:59 am

Good points on those Philly OFs. Still intrigued with Byrd, though. He seems the type to have two quality years left in his tank.

  5. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 28, 2014 at 7:46 am

I guess one of the surprising things to me, in how I’m feeling, is that I don’t have any big negative feelings about the Dodgers regarding this past weekend. Yeah, the Puig bat-flips annoy me, but there were less of those after the first game of the series. The games were so blah, in general, to me, that it was hard to get worked up about them. For the first time this summer, I watched the NFL channel to see training camp reports. It was the first time this season I started to lose a little interest in the baseball season.
A win tonight vs. the Pirates would do a lot toward upping everyone’s dauber.

Zummie– I 100% totally agree with your comment about the “dumpster dive” bench. They have a 150 million dollar team but it’s comprised of a 10 cent bench. There is NOTHING on the 40 man roster that resembles anything more than a replacement player if one of the “150 million dollar guys” goes down.
That’s one thing Beane fixed this year. He improved his 40 man with legit mlb players and now he’s got real back up players across the roster. You have to have that if you’re going to compete and Sabean still doesn’t get this……

  7. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 28, 2014 at 8:15 am

I was traveling over the weekend and missed most of the games. We listened on the AM dial yesterday as we slowly traversed the parking lot known as I80 west from Sacramento. I guess we were away from CA for a while but traffic all over Northern CA is like LA now and everybody knows LA sucks.

Sadly, I wasn’t surprised by the sweep. I voted for 1 win in the poll daddy survey brought to you by BigFlavor, Inc last week. I am curious if everyone else that voted for 1 win sort of expected a sweep in the back of their mind? Maybe in that little voice back there that Thomas Magnum was always talking about. To be honest I did.

What now? Well, today is a new day. Win today.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 28, 2014 at 8:20 am

I felt they had to win at least one or face what they’re facing today: psychologically beaten down by the Dodgers. Maybe they shake it off and I think the Peavy acquisition was critical to still giving this team momentum. But getting swept at home by your arch rival and current foe is just damaging, across the board……

      • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 28, 2014 at 8:28 am

I thought I was being optimistic and I think I’m generally pretty optimistic but the club just doesn’t pass the eye test for me. You and Zummie cover it pretty well above. The minor league system part is sort of a wash for me. It’s an ebb and flow and there is a lot of home grown talent on the big club right now.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2014 at 8:39 am

Well, it would help some to get Belt and Pagan back. The pisser to me is they didn’t foresee Pagan going down again. Or they expected Blanco to magically discover how to hit for average. Sure, they had a half-assed plan at 2nd as well. Neither have panned out, and the team is struggling across the board.

Morse’s power outage is galling. The big boys are all struggling as well. Sure, they ran into good pitching this weekend. OK, great pitching. But this is the major leagues. There’s great pitching all over the place.

Buster had a night to forget despite the home run. I can forgive the passed balls as he and Peavy I’m sure didn’t have much time to adjust to each other. Plus, Peavy was dropping shit 6′ in front of the plate. The killer was not looking Gordon back to 3rd.

Of course he wasn’t the only one scuffling defensively. Uggla made a throwing error on the play to the plate to go along with his fielding whiffs. I thought Bochy was going to walk out there and strangle him after the routine grounder went through the five hole.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on July 28, 2014 at 8:47 am

I listened to that sequence on the radio. The Giants get out to a lead and that error at the start of the inning promptly gave it right back. 0 for 8 in 3 games? How much run will Bochy give him?

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2014 at 8:59 am

No shit. I’m 90% sure it ain’t gonna be Uggly out there tonight.

  9. Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 28, 2014 at 8:54 am

What next? Purge/delete, and get ready for the Bucs. I had hoped for a win…and actually thought they had a chance to take the series, but I did ask where the zero was on the Big Flavor poll.

Regardless, I still say it isn’t the end of the world. I am sure the team is pissed they got swept at home by their arch-nemisis, but they are professionals and realize it was only three games. As I said before, we still have six more with the bums in September.

Agree with Charlie – getting Belt and Pagan back would be huge. They still need an OFer so that Blanco takes his shenanigans to the bench.

One day, one game at a time. Get a win and take it from there.

Last I saw on Cain was yesterday (either Pavs or Baggs), and there is no improvement, and no estimated date for return. Hence a starter becoming a hightened priority. Given the need, I was totally good with the trade (Escobar – who has struggled of late, and most projects as a 5th starter; and Hembree who hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire).

I see where Morse has has 1 RBI in a month or something crazy. I mentioned weeks ago the jury was still way out on him in terms of next year re-signing. Looks to me like the jury is leaning now towards a non-tender. You can’t have a below average fielding LFer that can’t produce. Any word on when Belt comes back from the concussion?…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2014 at 10:56 am

Now what , indeed. Time for guys to pull their collective heads out.
Dodgers hitters did what they needed to do—watching Puig and Hanley yukk it up was supremely annoying.
Clutch hits and rbis from AGon, Kemp Uribe and even Crawford. Gordon was a pest.

Giants? Pence one IF dribbler and Posey one HR all weekend. Morse and Sandoval couple hits, none clutch. These are the guys that need to carry everyone else, and they are more than capable. Colvin and Duvall, no.

The A’s have guys playing over their heads like Moss Crisp Norris Donaldson Vogt…Giants, when they need them desperately, simply do not right now. I just don’t get how bad they look at home where they used to dominate, even vs. better teams.

Peavy was decent. I like the way he competes. Plus, Hudson likes him. (He came across great on the interview.) That one inning was a depressing clasterclustermegaphuck. It was especially dispiriting that it came after an excellent play by Panda. Well, Uggla is terrible. I want him gone. Can’t hit, field, or throw. And I ain’t keen on his chemistry factor. Posey was terrible too. Yeah, he atoned with a homer. On that passed third strike, I guess he should have faked a throw to third. If we end up with the bases loaded, so what. I don’t know. It was dreadful. I suppose it’s all been said here.

  17. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 28, 2014 at 10:09 am

I’m tired of watching Uggla all ready. His 8 ABs told me everything I want to know. His swing is so slow, he actually anticipates in advance and swings early. Couple that with him squinting during his ABs, the dude is going to get hurt up there. Last, but not least – his fielding was a complete disaster. No two ways about it . . . UGGLA IS OLD AND THE EXPERIMENT SHOULD END. NOW!

  18. salty's avatar salty said, on July 28, 2014 at 10:12 am

We all knew when the season started they had little or no depth …Petit Huff and Escobar were being counted on to fill a need at SP; Blanco Colvin Perez were the Of insurance, Hicks Adrianza@ 2nd, and Susac/Quiroz at C.

Ownership could have ponied up some more bucks for a little better insurance but a lot of FA’s don’t want to sign to be backups. It’s why Theriot retired.
And few teams can overcome the loss of 3 key players. Take Gordon and Ramirez and say Ryu from the Bums for 6 weeks and see how they fare.
And trading for good quality requires good prospects. The A’s used their 2nd rated prospect to get Gentry. Giants had few major league ready ones. And they wanted to hang onto those guys is: Hembree Escobar Susac Panik to do exactly what everyone is complaining about–fill in for regs. It’s not merely money that is required to get an Utley.
Sabean says they feel good about the depth of pitching prospects remaining but he might be in denial. Escobar went from top prospect to Kickham boy in a matter of months. A lot riding on these kids to mature and live up to the hype.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 28, 2014 at 10:36 am

I don’t think Sabes is done dealing – either before or even after the trade deadline, e.g., see Cody Ross. In fact, Chris Haft is reporting the following, “The Giants retain the flexibility to swing more deals. Sabean said in announcing Peavy’s acquisition from Boston that rival teams had inquired about the availability of 15 Minor League prospects. Thus, San Francisco still possesses valuable bargaining chips. Sabean also coaxed the Red Sox to pay half of Peavy’s remaining salary — giving the Giants the economic flexibility to engineer a trade for another high-salaried performer, if necessary.”

      • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 28, 2014 at 12:40 pm

I agree, Blade. I think an OFer is probably the top priority right now, but maybe not, now that there is positive news with Pagan. Flip-side is maybe Bochy and Sabes have convinced mgt that they need a better back-up plan in the OF if Pagan cannot finish the year.

I also would not be surprised to see them looking for an upgrade at 2nd. It is apparent in just a few ABs that Uggly is a mere shadow of himself.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 28, 2014 at 12:50 pm

I hope so Chi . . . I also just read this – “FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi reports that the Giants “remain interested” in trading for Ben Zobrist. The Giants don’t exactly have a loaded farm system and gave up two good young pitchers to acquire Jake Peavy last week, but it seems they’re ready to go all-in (so to speak) as they try to keep pace with the Dodgers in the National League West. Zobrist, 33, has hit .268/.358/.409 in 403 plate appearances this season for Tampa Bay. He could play all around the field for San Francisco.”

Still think Byrd would be better than Blanco and Colvin (hell, he’d be better than Morse). Anyway, on we go. Peavy will be fine; that should’ve been a win, just one crappy inning, spurred largely by lousy defense. The big guns, other than Buster’s HR, did not help in that series, which is too bad, considering Pence had been fairly hot. Turn the page…. big guns must do their jobs, bit players must do theirs, hell, everyone, just do your f-ing jobs and stop trying to do too much at any given time. I’m tired of talking about our two titles. You don’t just stop doing your job. And you’re talking about “the old Beane.” He hasn’t won anything but he sure seems to be getting it right this year. And what I said about his frustration with a thin 40 man stands. He added Vogt, Norris and Jaso at catcher. Think about that. He picked up 3 guys for next to nothing, platoons them, mixes and matches etc and all 3 of those guys would be the current best hitters we have on our team. If not the 3 best they’d be top 5 best hitters on the Giants right now. And their FOURTH fucking catcher is their current all star 3rd baseman (who they also got for next to nothing). That’s freaking crazy.

I just read in the Denver Post that season-ending sports hernia surgery is seriously being considered for Tulowitski and there’s still no timetable for Tulowitzki’s return from the DL. Meanwhile, Cargo – who’s been on and off the DL this season – missed his second straight game Sunday with a sore ankle. Because I live here, I know the Giants are fortunate compared to the Sherpas, insofar as having some perspective on their DL woes involving Scutaro, Cain, Pagan, etc. Sheesh, right now the Sherpas have 12 players that are either day to day or on the DL. What force people to fill out a questionare before they can buy. And as an owner of said tickets I am going to take a loss just not to sell to a Dodger fan. uh…SOLD. Second all that Dodger blue in the stand. Kruk on KNBR came out and said what I beleive is true. Giants fans are afraid to where their gear in LA. If you don’t think the Brian Stowe beating did not affect Giants fans in LA think again. The police are so afraid of getting taken to court for excessive force they just don’t show up for shit. I don’t even where Giants or Niner gear in LA. when I go to Disneyland. As far as the Giants are concerned, I agree with what is being said about nothing, nada. big fat 0 in the farm system. plus a big fat zero for not getting some quality players off waivers, FA something. There had to be some players that are not super stars that are better than the Giants bench is right now.

Here is the latest on the injury front. All good news.

Pagan is running and taking live BP and could begin a rehab assignement this week, with a return either before or into the upcoming road trip. Sounds as if Bochy may have more on this either today or tomorrow.

Panik’s ankle is good to go, and he is to be in the starting line-up (parking Uggly on the bench).

Belt is showing good progress, but has not been cleared for baseball-related activiites. They are saying it could take him a few more days to recover, but the important things is he is improving.

Great news Charles. Thanx for sharing. Had those three been in the lineup there is no doubt that SF would have at least copped Game Three and currently enjoying a half game lead. Still plenty of season left and when the two seasoned warriors ~ our sparkplug and our clutch-hitter ~ and our promising 2B rookie return we will have our “A” team back.

      • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 28, 2014 at 2:42 pm

I agree, Stick. I think it would have been a much different series if Pagan and Belt were in there and healthy. It was only three games. Giants had won 5 of 7 this year up to that point. Fuck the bums. See your sorry asses in September.

Maybe Sabey has scared off GM’s …he usually gets the better end of the deal.

Btw I’m not saying he’s immune from criticism because he won 2 titles. I’ve often ripped them for the contracts given out and the lack of creativity he’s shown bringing back the same cast. And right now his arse is on the line if the farm doesn’t start producing. That has been their emphasis. Brown was a bad pick, Stratton has struggled, Panik? Susac? Crick? They need a couple next year to make an impact.

    • Chipower9's avatar Chipower9 said, on July 28, 2014 at 3:00 pm

Brown was NOT a bad pick. At the time he was picked, he was highly ranked among prospects. And there have been the superb moves too (Ross, Burrell, etc.). Ya win some and you lose some, but I agree, the farm needs to be rebuilt.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 28, 2014 at 3:22 pm

Yeah, I have to disagree with regard to not only Brown, but all of these guys for two reasons: 1. At the time they were selected, no one had a “sure thing” crystal ball; and, 2. The final chapter hasn’t been written on any of these guys, except maybe Brown, who hasn’t really shown jack shit to date.

I do agree with you regarding your earlier comment about two WS does count for a lot. Conversely, I also agree that Sabes is not beyond being criticized, which you also voiced above (in agreement with Flavor). Nevertheless, I frankly had no expectations beyond 2nd place this season. So, all in all, this has been a surprise to me to find the Giants not only competing with the Dodgers, but at one point – out right dominating them. The lead change has occurred 8 time this season already. Who’d of thought?

We got spanked by Zack Greinke, Clayton Kershaw and Hyun-Jin Ryu – Those three dominated San Francisco, giving up a total of three runs while striking out 24 batters in 22 innings. Wow!

However, I also am reminded of this (recent article I just read today about the rivalry) . . .

“The Giants-Dodgers rivalry in the past decade might not have been as intense — or as hyped — as the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry over the past 15 years or so, but it has been much closer and evenly spread over the past century. Which makes it better. The Giants have won the pennant 20 times and the World Series seven times, while the Dodgers have won 18 pennants and six World Series. Since the World Series started in 1903, the Giants have finished ahead of the Dodgers 56 times; the Dodgers have finished ahead in 55 seasons.”

If given the choice of being a fan of any other MLB franchise or the Giants – let’s just say that I’ll take being a Giants fan every day and twice on Sunday.

      • salty's avatar salty said, on July 28, 2014 at 3:45 pm

OK we’ll call it a good pick that didnt pan out. Just semantics. Yes, Players fail a lot. No problem with that. And I’ve not closed the book on the others. Still TBD.

And Sabean had a great run with trades, picking up bargains and drafting. No titles otherwise. I feel we sometimes we are spoiled by the successes and expect it to happen all the time.

How many teams make it to the WS 3 of 5 years? Or 3 of 10? If Posey doesn’t get flattened, who knows?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 28, 2014 at 4:06 pm

Speaking to the choir here. I like Sabean and consider us fortunate to have him. All GMs miss on trades, draft selections, free agents, etc.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 28, 2014 at 4:55 pm

my issue with Sabean isn’t about missing on trades or whatever. It’s an organizational philosophy that he heads up. There is a problem when you have a 150 million dollar roster and a 10 cent bench. It’s a problem that you can’t lose a guy or two without the whole fucking season hanging in the balance.

it’s been coalescing for a while. And watching Beane redo his 40 man over the last 2 years got me thinking about it. You don’t need a roster of a bunch of 100 million dollar guys. They all get hurt and many of them have earned that deal off their steroid use anyway. Quit the cycle, collect the checks for the next 10 years.
Find a bunch of guys like Vogt, Norris, Donaldson, Jaso etc… make them fight it out and earn their time. I believe this to be the new way of building a championship team. Build your 40 man deep, no one gets a hundred million dollar deal, and after that, let the chips fly……

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 28, 2014 at 7:17 pm

and here’s the other thing: the reason they give out the 100+ million deals is for the merchandise gain, not to win. The Giants make more off Posey tee shirt sales than Jaso/Norris/Vogt will make in their lifetime in the major leagues. In one fucking year…..

Rockford got into fist fights and would throw one punch, hit a guy’s jaw, the guy would go down, and Rockford would scream in pain that he thought he broke his hand. That’s reality. The 3 minute fist fights with multiple hits to the head are total BS. Rockford had it right, and funny. I always liked the way he featured the relationship with Rocky, his dad. Cool. And, “Angel”, his slimy sidekick, (aka Stuart Margolin, still alive), was always a fun ride when he was in a show. Maybe I’m a mossback, but TV seemed better then…

Ran right through that bitch, and needed like 85 stiches in both legs, his head, and his back. He luckily didn’t get cut in half by a huge shard of glass that crashed down after he got through. Saw the whole thing.

And cars don’t just magically leap into the air and explode. For all that good TV, there was the A-Team.
