A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Getting Ready For a W

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 24, 2014

I just saw a tweet that has to be wrong: Petit is 7 hitters away from the all time record of 45 consecutive batters retired. Wow. That’s incredible.

Feeling REALLY good about today’s match up. Voggy is tough as nails and while Strasburg is good at home (and in general) he’s still just a man. We have a team full of men.

Hope everyone out here made it through last night’s quake ok. It woke me up but we’re 70 miles away so it wasn’t a real big deal. Kinda reminded me of back in the day with the ladies. Hey now!

All right, the weather is clear in DC, no rain on the way, and our sunrise continues to rise high in the sky.

Go Giants!

Well, I am not gonna lie. Took a nap up 5-2. I wake up and — talk about earthquakes — it’s 8-6. The Affeldt Fault.

I am not really that shocked. They have had something like four walkoffs this week. They are an explosive team.

Well, mutual beat downs at either end of the weekend set. In between, Lincecum handed the Nats a win, so the minimum one win I expected this weekend is achieved. A decent 3-3 roadie — keeps hope alive…

I think we still haven’t given this streak by Petit the proper run it deserves. He didn’t pitch in this mess today, did he? Weird record. Even though Barr was a pretty solid pitcher and I loved the guy, it seemed odd to me that he held that record instead of someone like Koufax etc. I always got it confused with the scoreless innings streak Drysdale held for so long and would always be surprised when it came up that Barr still held that other record. Why is this record always held by a fairly pedestrian pitcher? Not to bash Buehrle, who has had a nice career, but he ain’t Seaver or Marichal by any stretch.

  23. SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on August 24, 2014 at 4:53 pm

Barr held that record all by himself for 35 fucking years. Bobby Jenks tied him in 07 and Buehrle broke it in 09. Blows my mind. Fun Fact: Barr was the pitching coach at Sacramento State for many years. One time in college I was home for the summer and unable to find a summer job. My parents weren’t big on me sitting around the house so they pushed me to take a summer class as Sac State. It was an Accounting class. We took a morning break each day and I would walk out to the baseball fields by the American River where they had a baseball camp going on. Barr and Tito Fuentes both worked the camp. I can still hear Tito getting pissed off that the batters were taking too many pitches and yelling out “swing the sticks, guys!”
Eventually I made friends with this dude in my class who had been at SDSU like me, but had transferred to Sac State. After class, we would often go get stoned at his place and then go out to eat at the Mongolian BBQ at the corner of Howe and Arden that is still there to this day.

Barr is also remembered (y’all probably know this story) for trying to leave the mound too early on a pitching change because he was angry about being pulled. Frank Robinson was having none of that, and grabbed Barr by the jersey and yanked him back onto the mound for the pitching change.

Nice observation and question in previous post. Just looked it up and Buehrle has actually had a pretty nice career, a testament to keeping the BB totals down. Barr had great command, too.

In 71, Tito walked 18 times in 678 PAs . . . batting second. Too bad the Sac State kids didn’t have that to throw back at him 🙂

Lincecum the gift that keeps on giving …….to the opposing team. “Oh it’s in my head” he sniffs. Can a shrink be far behind?

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 24, 2014 at 7:59 pm

After floundering for 2+ seasons, why wouldn’t it be in his head?…

      • James's avatar James said, on August 24, 2014 at 8:17 pm

Because it’s in a motion designed to maximize velocity to an extent that sufficient, consistent command will never be a possibility. When the velocity goes . . . you see the result.

He was so locked in for awhile there. Then Pfffffffffttt…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 24, 2014 at 8:19 pm

Yeah, of course it’s in his motion and lack of velocity, but the fact that he sometimes finds the solution and pitches well, even to the point of a recent no hitter, tells me it’s in his head, too. The anecdotes of people seeing him taking 3 steps in the clubhouse and then making practice wind ups says a lot about his mental state — it ain’t good…

      • James's avatar James said, on August 24, 2014 at 8:59 pm

Well, of course he has moments where he does well — even when he had the good fastball, he had stretches where he was more dominant, and his splitter and curve remain good pitches, just like Zito’s curveball — but there’s no way he keeps it up for any length of time, which is why he and Edwin Jackson are the two worst starters in NL right now.

Hey SD, I’ve been to that Mongo BBQ on Arden. We used to stay at one of those hotels (Doubletree or something) that are right off Arden as you come off the Cap freeway exit when the Asian teams I coach come up there every spring at least once. Tough to find good whole team venues that aren’t buffet style.
Used to hit one downtown Mt. View too, right on main drag which is Castro St. good stuff, plus they had one of those free ice cream dispensers.
Just a week ago buddy of mine and I went into a Dickey’s BBQ, franchise outfit in Sunnyvale and they also had one. Thought those things long out of style.

Saw a story where supposedly Vogs was miffed about coming out. Usually reliable pen didn’t have it today, and Nats got the breaks on some seeing eye hits that had eluded them earlier on balls they scalded.
Eh, everyone else (cards braves LA pirates) lost so no ground lost. Long flight home tho.
Time to make Rockies pay for leaving Sherpa land.
