A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Focused Up and Winning

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 29, 2014

Excited to head into Milwaukee. It’s a great yard to hit in and Voggy has been “lights out” for most of the year. We are only 4.5 games off the Dodgers and the focus should still be on winning the division, not a wild card spot. The rest of the season starts NOW.

Congratulations to Yuzzie-Pet for achieving his unreal record of 46 straight hitters in a row. It’s more impressive, to me, that he did it over so many different appearances. You don’t always head out to the mound with your best stuff.

Milwaukee has always been “great yard to hit in.”
I was listening on radio day Mays blasted 4 out of old County Stadium. I think Joe Adcock (slugging 1b, real name) hit a couple out for Braves that day. I loved their old uni too (home and road gray), with the Brave on shoulder.

Pagan also hit 2 for SF that day, I believe…

      • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on August 29, 2014 at 9:27 am

Three bits of trivia about that game that I remember reading many years ago in one of Mays’ early biographies:

        1) He hit those homers with Joey Amalfitano’s bat that he was admiring before the game.
        2) He was violently ill the night before from some ribs he’d eaten for dinner with McCovey. (Mac was fine.)
        3) The hardest ball he hit that day might have been the one that was caught in the outfield.

Beautiful day at the yard yesterday. Congratulations to Petit. After he broke the record the crowd noise seemed to overwhelm him. Can’t say that I blame him. That’s got to be tough to focus through the love pouring down.

I was impressed seeing Panik in person. He had a walk, hit, fly out and I can’t remember what happened in the other at bat. He has a good eye and puts good swings on the ball. On the defensive side the play early in the game was a rocket that just ate him up but that was a really tough play.

With the Rockies rocking the purple I don’t know how anyone can take them serious as a sports franchise. I played on that theme quite a bit with some CO fans within earshot. The Giants should wipe the floor with the Rockies but it was still great to see a W and a 3 game streak.

I will stick to my prediction that I have shared numerious times since his call-up. I predict Panik to be the opening day 2nd baseman for our Giants in 2015. Here is the proverbial “Book It!”

Off topic . . . NFL is considering a 6 game suspension for 1st offense domestic violence; and, a lifetime ban from NFL for 2nd offense. Hmm, add Steroids and other PEDs to men who already have a propensity for violence and my guess is that in about 5-10 years, you’ll run out of NFL type football players. 🙂

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 29, 2014 at 11:18 am

Yeah., bit of an overreaction to the piddly-ass fine for Ray (Boom Boom) Rice.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 29, 2014 at 11:32 am

What I don’t get is why the NFL is involved to the extent they are? Isn’t this a police and eventual court system matter? If the MOFO is in jail, then he wont be playing football, that’s for certain.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 29, 2014 at 12:18 pm

Well, this being the NFL, these guys get their cases (and sometimes sentences) postponed til the offseason. See Grand Theft Auto star Chris Culliver for an example of that.

As Goodie Goodell showed with Little Bent Worthlessburger, you don’t even need to be convicted of anything to get suspended. The opposite side is the Ray Ray case. He avoided prosecution by entering some sort of anger management thing. The arrest remains on his record, and he’s on probation, but no trial, and Goodell gives him a slap on the wrist.

This kind of shit falls under the ‘personal conduct’ clause most of these guys have in their contracts. I don’t profess to know how legally binding these clauses are, but at least in Worthlessburger’s case, I think he could have beaten the suspension imposed by Goodell. It would have been a terrible PR move, so I’m sure he and Goodie worked something out behind the scenes.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 29, 2014 at 2:03 pm

Goodie got publicly hammered for only giving Rice a 2-game suspension. So, he’s swinging the pendulum the other way now to show he’s serious. I heard that the appeals process is done, no reduction. It’s 9 games, period. He can be in the facility during the suspension, so that’s helps keep him outta trouble. At least he’ll be fresh for the last half of the season…

Clue to the clueless . . . The Sherpas have been a very bad team since their inception. Moreover, they were a bad team this season BEFORE all these injuries took place, e.g., Cargo hasn’t been Cargo for 2 years; Anderson – their major free agent pickup (hilarious, I know) – was face planting in April before he went on the DL.

I have an idea for you. Try writing something intelligent versus the smarmy, imbecilic bullshit you usually dump on this blog. You might get a better reception.

    • stickman's avatar stickman said, on August 29, 2014 at 4:14 pm

How long ago was it that the logical move would be for Panik to be batting in the two-hole with Pence 3rd, Buster at cleanup and Pablo fifth? Oh well, in BB15’s lineup world one step at a time is definite progress.

Panik, as i noted weeks ago is pretty much your ideal #2. He does not strike out often. He rarely overswings. He’s not bad at going the other way. He seems to be a team player. He definitely appears to not be brain-dead. And it looks like the league’s pitching may not figure him out as he may be one of those old-fashioned ballplayers who does not try to do too much but just keeps plugging along.

Chi: From your “opening day 2nd baseman” statement it’s abundantly clear that you get it. With the number of Free Agents on the team who may or may not stick it’s nice to know that the longterm black-hole at 2B may now have resolved into a bright star in the Giants firmament. I do not expect Panik to ever become any kinda super-star, but along with Buster, may well become part of the glue that holds this team together. All along i have envisioned him as becoming another Steady Eddie Bressoud, a solid building block.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 29, 2014 at 4:28 pm

Guys like Kent, Morgan, Sandberg are the power exceptions to the norm of 2nd baseman. That position demands good range, particularly to the CF side, good cross body throwing capability, and some brass balls to hang in and turn the DP when some dude is barrelling into you. Panik seems to fit the bill, and looks like maybe a solid .280 spray hitter after a season or two, with good bat control and an AB eye good enough to probably push an OBP consistently over .335. I’d take that combo of things, with low power numbers, in a heartbeat in the 2 hole…

  16. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 29, 2014 at 3:46 pm

snarkk, Watching him yesterday I thought Duffy looked clearly over matched and a weak arm compared to Crawford. Regardless, I have read that Crawford is struggling with some shoulder soreness so maybe another day of rest would be good. Bochy probably wants to throw the best LU he can out there with the Brewers being the real deal and all. I’m tired of these shit performances against the better clubs. The Giants got to get it done. Starting tonight.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 29, 2014 at 4:01 pm

I’d like to see Duffy again because he got some hits. Plus, I figured Craw needs a break, probably something wrong with him, which you just confirmed. I hadn’t seen the shoulder stuff, but not surprised there’s a physical issue of some sort…

      • stickman's avatar stickman said, on August 29, 2014 at 4:22 pm

Little doubt Duffy can hit. SS is a demanding role and for some while now i’ve felt that Crawford is a bit gassed. You may be right about the physical issue, Snarkk. Doubtful whether it’s mental with that guy. The good thing about Duffy is that though defensively he does not have the high-end chops of a Crawford, he is usually plenty competent to make the more routine plays.

Next season i can envision this kid as the #1 roving infield utility man, spelling in at short, second and third no less than once apiece per week. It would keep the starters fresh and if it does not detract from his bat we could be looking at a major keeper in a critical role. The multi-position role would be similar to the stellar longman role Petit has provided for the pitching staff this season. And…i think Bochy likes flexible multi-taskers. Ditto for Susac a couple times per week spelling Buster at C. if Posey is not quite yet ready to hang up the tools of ignorance.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 29, 2014 at 4:27 pm

Either the Giants players are really good at hiding their injuries, or we really do have a crappy medical staff.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 29, 2014 at 4:36 pm

The one thing I’d like to know, and haven’t seen anywhere, is an explanation of why the Giants didn’t clean out Cain’s elbow during an offseason. I’d love to hear the explanation. The prior medical imagery had to show the extent of the problem pretty clearly. Sure, any surgery has risk, but they apparrently pulled enough bone chips out to fill a sandbox. Bochy said about the chips, “They’re pretty big. It’s amazing the guy (was) pitching when you see the size of the chips in the jar.” How can Bochy be surprised at this? Amazing. So, they rolled the dice on not doing it off-season with the risk being he’d have an unsolvable elbow inflammation or lock during a season, and would need the surgery ASAP, which would shelve him the rest of a season. Exactly what happened. So the Giants end up paying Cain for half a season (around $10M) to sit on his ass, and have to go trade people in a pinch to get Peavy. Sounds like bad investment management to me…

      • wswins's avatar wswins said, on August 29, 2014 at 5:10 pm

Snarkk. He had the condition for years. This year they didn’t float. They stayed pretty much in the same place.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 29, 2014 at 5:18 pm

Everybody knows he had it for years. Even more reason they were rolling the dice on a problem that would eventually bite them during a season. Maybe James could work up the probability distribution of an elbow melt down with chips like that. Over the past decade, the number of guys in all sports during an offseason getting bone chips removed and bone spurs shaved from some joint has to be huge, so it’s not like it’s an unusual decision to take the chips during an offseason…

  18. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 29, 2014 at 5:10 pm

Speaking of Peavy, any of you dudes in favor of bringing him back? Maybe on a 1 year + 1 year team option contract? They may have few other alternatives. I’d take him over Voggy, assuming Cain is back. Not sure what he’d command — probably around $8-$10 million for one year? He’ll be 34 next May 31. Bochy likes him, knows him. I’d be concerned the guy is so intense he’ll wear out his welcome…

Actually, I like Peavy snarkk. Petit and Hudson I am worried about. Petit does it with smoke and mirrors. Non-existent fastball. Essentially, the less you see of him, the more effective he is. Second or third time through the line up, I think he would be dead meat. Hudson we have for another year, so it doesn’t matter what I want.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 29, 2014 at 5:38 pm

I’m pretty much with you on those two, blade. Huddy could be a problem next year at age 39. Petit is a finesse guy, but hey, maybe he’s found something. His pedigree says otherwise, sure. Peavy throws strikes and knows how to pitch, maybe he’s got one decent year and a crap year left. Suffice to say next year’s rotation is Bum, Cain and limit the pain…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 29, 2014 at 6:06 pm

Yes, definitely. Actually, he runs circles around Morse in the outfield (seriously). Unfortunately, he plays left as does Pence. Out of your list, I want Iwakuma every day and twice on Sunday. Also, McCarthy, Scherzer, Shields can all come to SF anytime. De La Rosa might pay us to escape Coors Field (LOL).

Try playing in that Coors outfield. Hilarious statement Flavor. Like I said before, he would run circles around Morse defensively, albeit, he is injury prone, but that has more to do with altitude which I have explained before here.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 29, 2014 at 7:46 pm

I’m basing my comment off your “yes definitely” when asked if you would want Cuddyer over Morse next year. And how do you think Cuddyer would hit away from Coors? He’s going to be freaking 36 next year, that’s a guy breaking down, that’s not Coors Field. And his OPS at Coors Field is 100 pts higher than it was in Minn. Not unexpected. But if you think that guy would be better than Morse OPS-wise (and remember you need some power to get the ball out at AT&T) you’re misguided if you think Cuddyer would provide more than Morse, offensively.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 29, 2014 at 8:04 pm

Read the article Loo referenced about Morse. Just a couple of weeks ago – you were calling Morse a joke and worse. He sucks and hasn’t accomplished nearly as much as Cuddyer. Also, snarkk and I were referencing his fielding primarily. But even hitting, I would take him over Morse. Again, read the column Loo cited. If Morse comes back next year, we are in trouble. Just have to agree to disagree.

I commented a few times here before, this year and last, that I thought it was clear Lincecum fared poorly (compared to past videos of him when he was “on”) when his lead (left) leg ended up somewhat to very far left to the first base side of home plate on his follow through. He fared far better when the left leg consistently ended up nearly straight onward from the plate. Not a breakthrough observation, to be sure, but seemed an indicator of motion gone wacky. Here’s this today from Bochy, on how he thinks Lincecum is faring in trying to fix things: “…pitching coach Dave Righetti found his form encouraging. “That’s what I’m getting from Righetti,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’s locating well, there’s little effort in his delivery, it’s cleaner, better balance, not falling off to his glove side. … But I would like to get him into a game to see where he’s at.” …

Speaking of football guys that get away with shit, checked out a series of articles written in Seattle times about the guy Hope Solo (also in court rooms these days) married that played for UW and Seahawks, J. Burnett I think. Turns out the guy was arrested in high school for maiming some guy with a baseball bat. After that, suspected of rape at UW, multiple DUIs and driving accidents. Couple UW teammates from this time (coached by Neuheisel) also got the *declined to prosecute* treatment from DA.
This particular guy finally wound up in prison in AZ when he got popped again for DUI while on probation.
Enabled at every opp, as long as he could still play.

Great fight between him and Ali (favorite fighter of all time). Chuvallo had a lot of courage. Henry Cooper was another dude who could take a punch and didn’t back down from Ali (albeit, Ali destroyed him).

Saw Oscar Bonavena give Ali a rough time in his second comeback fight in December 1970 at MSG. Think I paid $5.00 to sit upstairs. Bonavena also knocked down Smokin’ Joe more than once IIRC.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 29, 2014 at 8:52 pm

What a deal. I’m envious Loo. After the 60s ended, all of Ali’s live fights ended up on pay for TV (as they are now). You had to wait a week after the fight and then watch it on Wide World Of Sports. Ironically, as I alluded to before, the internet has now provided a way for anyone to watch live big time fights for free. $5.00 bucks? I am floored.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 29, 2014 at 8:53 pm

I was a kid then Blade. It was a long, long time ago (American Pie). Those were the prices. I’m not even sure that fight was a sellout. I remember empty seats. Just guessing, but I bet $50 or less would’ve gotten you ringside for that one.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 29, 2014 at 9:15 pm

Yeah, I was too. Concerts were cheap then too (although we didn’t perceive them as cheap – $12 or $16). That Ali Frazier fight you alluded to – I think that was the first or second pay for TV fight and you definitely had to pay to get into that one, especially ring side. I remember all the celebrities. All looked like pimps. lqtm.

    • James's avatar James said, on August 29, 2014 at 9:02 pm

WSW, Brisbee is a very funny and clever writer. He got caught dismissing Morse a little too early, and is now soft peddling his distaste. And I know you probably (and others certainly) disagree, but any LFer who can track a lazy fly ball and catch a line drive within 10 feet of where he’s positioned, should be judged exclusively by his OPS.

I don’t think that highly of Sabes, but he will not outbid some AL team willing to hand Morse serious coin over 2 years.
