NFL Football is Here!
I can’t keep logging in and looking at that anymore so here’s a pm thread with no game for no reason other than to get that fat fuck Dodger fan off the main thread……
Niners are screwed this weekend, by the way. Dallas is going to beat them. I know, it’s hard for me to admit it. Hope I’m wrong…..
Also, this is fantastic. Submitted by “Team Lukie” who refuses to post here but reads the Flap every day.
If the Niners lose to Dallas then the season may be lost. They had the worst defense in the league last year, and got weaker.
Niners by 20.
I don’t don’t we’ll score a lot of points. I just think that our defense is a lot worse than people think it is going to be and Dallas does have a good offense. Maybe I’d just play the over.
Football is such a yawn. Take away the gambling and almost no one would care.
It’s nice of them to run a play once in a while between commercials.
GO CHIEFS!!!
Found minor league stats on Gary Brown re: SBs.
2013 in Fresno, stole 17 CS 11…success rate 61%
2014 in Fresno, stole 36 CS 20…success rate 64%
Um, I’m just saying it’s gonna be a lot harder vs ml level players. Once he actually gets on, of course.
We’ll see, but seems to me this guy is Bowker Gang material.
sorry, should be separate post unrelated to Loo’s.
But I’d add to his last sentence, “as long as it doesn’t interrupt gratuitous sideline babe insights/interviews.”
I touched her soul once. And now and forever…it will belong to me
Oh shit. I think posted that on the wrong blog!!?? Uhm…nothing fellow Flappers….just a…a uh…uhm…suggestion for a lyric a friend writing a song needed. That’s all. Just a song lyric suggestion…really. Honestly. Uhm…nite nite
Appears that folks around baseball are discovering Panik. Glad the Giants discovered him first.
Great vid of Flann and Peavy. Good stuff.
Bring Peavy back just to play guitar.
Here’s a link to the songwriter himself singin’ it.
He died in 1997 — addictions…

Cool video. I have an old CD of Townes with Steve Earle and Guy Clark. Think it was recorded in 1995…just a few years before Townes died. Good stuff.
22 games left. All NL west for LA and SF except they have 3 vs Cubs and we have Detroit for 3.
LA arranged rotation to have their big 3 vs SF both series against us.
2/3 against Detroit will be huge. Kershaw in the midst of best 4 consecutive seasons maybe of all time,……..
In a possible MVP year. Those 2 games already losses in the minds of both Giants and the Dodgers right?. How absolutely awesome would it be if we beat him twice to blow his MVP, blow LA div win, and push Posey into MVP discussion!!!
Love that video clip, Magnus! I’m watching it, and I’m like, What?! Did he say Peavy? Hold it, that’s Tim Flannery. Then I told myself, What other baseball team would have dudes like this?! (No, I did not weep.) And Snarkk beat me to it: Townes Van Zandt. Talented, tragic person. I’ve noted here before, POET, the tribute album is a very fine CD. Delbert McClinton does ‘Pancho & Lefty.’ (Williedav or Chipower or someone chimed in to give their love of this album.) A classic rendering of ‘Pancho & Lefty’ is recorded by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. I may’ve seen Townes Van Zandt in person. But maybe not. If I did see/hear him, I was wasted. Which I guess he’d appreciate. I can’t recall. But Peavy and Flannery go up a notch for me, just because of that clip.
I agree Pawlie. And I am sure I commented on that CD. Also mentioned another that I have earlier in this thread of Townes with Steve Earl and Guy Clark. It was near the end of Townes’ life, and you can tell…he is missing lines, etc., but still a very magic CD.
[…] The rest of the article can be found here: THE San Francisco Giants Blog […]
Cool video!
Two of my favorite singer/songwriters perform “Pancho and Lefty” at just about every one of their concerts: Emmylou Harris, and Gillian Welch.
Harris also often performs Van Zandt’s song “If I Needed You,” and Welch usually also performs his song “White Freight Liner,” with her musical partner, the amazing guitarist Dave Rawlings.
And Steve Earle thought so highly of Van Zandt, that he named one of his sons Justin Townes Earle, who has a successful music career going on, also.
Good stuff, zumiee. I just mentioned a CD earlier in the thread of Townes, Steve Earl, and Guy Clark. And yes…I love the Townes’ covers that Emmylou does…
Detroit has changed team quite a bit since 2012…how many holdovers beside Verlander and Cabrera?
Towers is gonzo in AZ, foregone conclusion. See what Tony asterisk does, but DBax have a lot of catching up to do. Since they have Golds at a bargain and not a whole lot of other talent, wonder if they go into FA market?
Especially since a lot of their recent trades have mostly backfired.
As for Gibson retaliation style, that was LaRussa’s MO too. He stood up for what happened with McCutchen and defended Gibson, going public with statement that chastised Pirates for leading league in hit batsmen.
Tony Asterisk. Love that…
Peavy looks a little like Steve Howe (the late pitcher).
Nice video. This inter-league series in September is bullshit.
Agreed. I generally like interleague, but it should be finished before the stretch drive so that all the teams in a division are on equal footing in terms of who they’re playing, when they’re playing them…
Flav/Snarkk, cool stuff. I had barely heard of Townes Van Zandt and had never heard his stuff. Kind of a latter-day Gramm Parsons. . . . Great stuff.
Pre game doom post, flav? I think Chuck’s right, dallas sucks. Any team in West should beat them.
I’ll be interested to see how NFC West fares vs. AFC West. Tougher sched for chiefs this year. Raiders have a chance to help Niners out with a W or 2, which likely a lot to ask. And they do meet up this year too.
Month from now is co. mgmt. meeting in Seattle (where we have a bunch of stores)…3 days of no sun, I’m sure. Top it off, guy who is their biggest fan has been promoted to my supervisor now. Ugh.
Yeah, in a fairly short time, both the NFC and AFC Wests became the strongest divisions in football, and they face off against each other this season. Gonna be a war of attrition this year.
LaRussa is flexing his muscles in AZ.
Giants just need to avoid a sweep in Detroit. They should get at least one game. Two of three would be sweet. Problem is they’ve done poorly in interleague, they are decidedly at a disadvantage now, too, with Morse unable to DH. Too bad they’re not seeing Verlander, he’s been crap this year…
Love the clip of Flannery and Peavy, Craig. I like Peavy, but his value just went up in my book. Anyway, thanks for the share….love it.
Great clip with Flan and Peavy. I can remember seeing a similar bit years ago when Peavy was a rookie or close to it and Flan was a pretty young coach. Now Peavy is a grizzled vet and Flan has been around forever. Cool to see them back together and still jamming. Flan is still a legend down here in SD.
As for Niners, I don’t follow them real close, but still pull for them, mainly because my son is big fan. My know-it-all coworker, who is a big Charger fan, claims the Niner locker room is a mess. He says the D has no confidence in Kaep and that Harbaugh is uber bitter over his contract status. Says that is why they were awful in preseason. Any truth to all of that? I say rubbish from a depressed Charger fan. Doesn’t faze me a bit if my teams get pummeled in preseason.
One more take on NFL….Andrew Luck seems like a great guy and a good young QB, but the hype he gets from the media is WAY too much for me. Didn’t he throw something like 5 picks in that playoff game against the Chiefs? If Cam Newton or RG3 did that, they would have got skewered. Yes, Luck ultimately led them to a win in that same game, but I think he is overhyped to beat hell. I’d love to see him have a lousy season. And yes, there is probably some of my anti-Stanford bias mixed in there somewhere.
I believe the Colts had a pretty porous OLine last season, Luck took a lot of sacks. I’d take him, for sure. As for the Niner locker room, Unca can probably talk to that. I haven’t seen much reporting up here on dissension in the locker room. There’s always speculation about how long Harbaugh will stay on, especially after the story about him possibly getting traded to Cleveland. He has this year and next left on his deal. My guess is if he doesn’t win the SBowl this season, he won’t be extended, and will end up elsewhere. His MO is to wear out his welcome – Stanford powers that be were not at all gutted to see him leave. Could they get a better replacement? IMO, no. And some of his assistants would go with him, that’s a good group of coaches…
Giants are 0-7 in AL parks this season. They’ve gotta be due to get one, I hope.
Belt is due for a concussion exam again on Sept 8, then we should know if he has a chance of appearing again this season…
Thanks, snarkk. I have been wordering WTH was up with Belt.
Yeah, Pete, this is going to be a very interesting year for the Niners. I have no idea the climate in the locker room, but there’s a lot of weird shit going on. I thought the front office was an abject disaster from the time that Dr. KeDorkian took over the team in ’03 til Harbaugh started winning. The winning cured ills for a bit, but with word of the Harbaugh trade to Cleveland, and the veiled comments regarding Harbaugh and Baalke not being on speaking terms, it was curious at best. Throw in 10 arrests of players in the past 3 years, and you have an overload of extemporaneous bullshit to wade through.
The defense is definitely weaker with Bowman out, and Smith suspended, and now RayMac in limbo. The defensive backfield is pretty green, but a pass rush would cure that problem.
To me, the team goes as far as the offense allows it. I’ve been pretty outspoken about the shitty play calling and formations these guys use (OC Greg Roman), but last year was (I hope) an outlier as all the WRs were either hurt or shitty. Kaepernick has a lot to prove this year, but the coaching staff has to give him the tools to succeed. With all these new weapons, they should be able to score more. Hyde looks great as the back to spell Gore.
As Seattle showed yesterday, a run-based offense works. They are better at it than us, as Seattle showed in the NFCCG. Gore and Hunter got 30 yards in 15 carries. What Seattle did differently that we seem to do is get big yards on 1st down. 2nd and 5, and 3rd and 2 is much better than 2nd and 11 and 3rd and 9. Running is great, but you need to be able to do it against the good teams, not just the Tennessees of the league.
Luck is the real deal. He makes mistakes, but he’s young. Huge arm and good vision. That being said, Indy doesn’t win that game if Jamaal Charles and KC’s entire defensive backfield don’t get hurt. They had already lost Tamba Hali before the game started.
And your old friend Alex missed a guy who was wide open for the clinching TD.
Well, when you score 44 and lose, it’s pretty hard to blame the offense. Like I said, KC got killed by injuries.
I dont follow NFL closely but do follow Luck a little since I admired him at Stanford.
Plucked these from an article…
In just his first two seasons..
Luck has thrown for 8200 yards and 22 wins. He has led 11 game winning drives…and last yr was 4-2 against playoff teams.
Enjoyed the video. Forgotten these guys were together in SD. Big fan of S Earle and through his music discovered Van Zandt.
And the DH du jour is . . . Duvall.
Pagan cf
Panik 2b
Posey c
Sandoval 3b
Pence rf
Blanco lf
Ishikawa 1b
Duvall dh
Crawford ss
Peavy rhp
I wish Posey was at 1st and Susac was catching. This line up doesn’t make sense. Ishi was an ofer last game. Crawford was an ofer too. Susac didn’t even play last game, so he is well rested.
This whole line up stinks. Shit, if you want Ishi in the lineup, then put Buster at DH. We need Posey relatively rested . . . Instead, we’re going to exhaust him playing catcher. Dumb in my opinion.
Agree with you there, blade. Having said that it’ll be an offensive explosion with Ishi going 3-4 with a bomb.
Who knows? I assume Bochy’s planned out the weekend…
It’s Susac or Duvall, essentially, with Morse not available to DH. I’d rather have Susac, he’s been en fuego. And, if he were in the LU, Posey should be the DH, agreed. Head scratcher…
Outside of the RH, LH schtick, which i feel to be often overrated, the only sensible reason i can see for Duvall as DH this evening is showcasing a guy who might fit really well in that role in the AL, particularly in some of the more longballl-favoring venues.
Yeah, I get it that some of these guys have to play with Morse out. I just don’t see the logic of having Posey catch, when Susac has already had two days (and now three days) off.
Stick, Duvall hasn’t proven a goddamn thing. He has no trade value whatsoever.
Look, I’m not saying Andew Luck sucks. He’s obviously a stud. However, I am SICK of constantly hearing how great he is and I do think it is possible that just maybe he is a wee bit overrated. I mean, the media would have you believe the guy is already an all-time great.
Just know that whenever Luck throws a pick that SanDawg is somewhere smiling.
I think the Niners are going to have a great year. I have a theory that a brand new stadium does something to energize a team and push them to great heights. James would laugh at this, but I believe in X factor shit like that. I have no data to back that up. I’m an anecdotal kind of guy.
Chi,
I recently directed the attorney who drew up my will to make sure To Live Is To Fly, performed by Guy Clark, is played at any memorial service for me — not that I expect or want it to be imminent. I know, I know, whythefuck should I care?! How postmortem vain!
Pawlie, look at it this way, It is the last thing you will ever ask for in life/death.
A great defense is the best way to the Super Bowl. Niners defense may not even be good. Lets hope for the best.
Shocked that the seats seem empty, especially in lieu of the Tigers being in a battle with KC.
They’re too busy murdering each other in the streets.
Either that, or they don’t have the Air Force providing air cover from the suburbs to the stadium.
an inning where the Tigers didn’t score, we are on a roll!!!
Mea culpa toward Bruce for doubting him (and Ishi).
I have the Tigers feed and they are very, very respectful toward the Giants. Playing it straight.
Me too, Blade. Their version of Amy G is even more annoying.
Here’s a Giant feed if you like….
http://www.wiz1.net/channel29
Thanks wswins . . . Afraid to change it, since the video is HD and it’s nice to have another perspective.
This is HD but maybe you shouldn’t change the vibe…
Actually, my regular feed just came online. It has the best picture (so I am now listening to K and Miller).
We have brian johnson sitting in for Krukow. He was talking about Peavy’s pitching strategy (down and away) and added “we are seeing a lot of that tonight”. It was peavy’s 6th pitch.
but talk about you Bay Area sporting great, nice to have him here.
If he’s a Bay Area sporting great, then Edgar Renteria deserves a statue…
well, ya kinda hafta be a cardinal fan and from Oakland but, hey, our requirements are satisfactory.
I’m sure diehard Tiger fans enjoy seeing Miggy giggling with Pence at first base…
the tigers bullpen has been on a downward trend of late.
Picking up where they left off in 2012.
current weather has showers only, could be a long game.
Kuiper and Johnson made a great point about Posey being more aggressive on the first pitch. Some of us had talked about how pitchers were often stealing strike one on Posey with the first pitch, usually with a curveball, and not always a very good curveball. It was frustrating watching Posey take a hanging curve for strike one. He should be crushing hanging curves, and he’s been doing that lately.
Blanco’s been tearing it up. Who’da thunk it. Maybe I underestimated Bam Bam’s coaching. Blanco’s got a nice swing going. His contact rate seems much higher lately, although I don’t have stats to back it up. And Ishi with a nice opposite field short swing for an RBI. Not trying to do too much, just thinking line-drive.
Washington resigned (personal, but not drug related).
Yes, John Adams will take over for the remainder of the season…
It’s gonna get late, but I’d be surprised if they don’t get this game in. Weather is blowing through now and it looks clear enough to play in a bout an hour or so
Ha. I was just gonna ask you what you thought about the chances of getting this one in since you said you were becoming a guru on the weather earlier this week!
the Giants are up 6-0, they’ll vote to wait this out till early morning Sat if need be. Remember, we haven’t gone through 5 so they’d wipe the slate clear if they can’t play anymore. And I can’t see them doing that at this point in the season unless it was the most extreme of situations. But the heavy shit looks like it’s gonna be gone. You’re gonna need to hit “future” to see it play out.

It’s OK. If there’s a rainout, Timmy gets to start one game of tomorrow’s DH!
He was pretty good against them in 2012, I’d take my chances with him
actually way more likely we’ll see Timmy tonight, if they re-start.
I don’t have the stats, but I know there have never been this many fucking rain delays in any SF season since I started following them. I do not want to find alternative entertainment tonight. I’ve had a hard fucking week, I’m parked on the couch with a good drink, and I want some goddamn Giants baseball, now.
I’m with ya my man. This actually could work out in my favor since I missed the start of the game, just got home a little while ago. And if Timmy takes the hill when we re-start, all the more interesting. I’m going to be shocked if they don’t finish this game.
Garcon! Baseball for James . . . Make it quick!
Steve, are you sure Flannery ain’t your long lost twin brother? 🙂
Nah, he’s a bit lighter then I am (but I like Flan). By the by, I love that song and had no idea that him and Peavy recorded it until today. Peavy definitely has a career after baseball if he so desires IMO. One of the best renditions I’ve heard.
Hey SD, good friend of mine is a gal who loves Andrew Luck and used to go watch him at Stanford. She digs Indy, and sent me an email from some indy blog or something trying to get me on board.
Starts out with big headline about Niners new locker rooms at Levi Stadium…and shows a pic of a row of jail cells.
I’m disgusted with the Niners right now. The only way that feeling changes is if it turns out Ray-Mc is totally innocent. Not enough evidence to prosecute will not fly with me. If the bruises on that pregnant woman’s neck, face and arms are in any way connected to McDonald then I’m done with the Niners until Harbaugh is gone. He’s full of hot wind and bullshit that I refuse to cheer for unless McDonald is completely cleared the way Kaep was cleared.
Does seem like a perfect spot to try to resurrect Timmy. Any updates from out there?
And of course tomorrow’s game is at 1 p.m. EST.
Seattle (winning) and K.C. (already won) are probably hoping every bit as much as the Giants that this game gets finished.
If it does get rained out, I predict Zumie will start losing his new found faith in Hensley’s instructional skills starting tomorrow.
lqtm. Hey, if the game never happened what DO you do with these stats getting ready to pad the offense? And how will that factor into the runs per game when you start comparing next year to this year and other years? This could break your calculator, James. 🙂
Ha, I leave the complex calculations to the Fangraphs and fantasy baseball geeks :-).
Peavey kept his arm warm strumming Louvin Bros tunes.
Does Johnson broadcast anywhere else? seems pretty green. I knew his little brother a bit back in the day. He put on rave/house parties in Oak and traded on his bros name big time. Dude was always starting shit with somebody at his shows and expecting everyone to back him. Total douche.
Pretty surprised to see Peavy come out again.
Boulder Skull better get Peavey out of the game, fuck him getting his five for the win.
He has but 4 of them! A little charity, brother!
Very surprised to see Peavy, but how many shots do you get to vulture your own game?
What the fuck?
Gregor is just making sure his offensive contributions are not mere padding.
Musta lost it in the lights. He flinched at the last second
Hey, where have we seen that before?
Pablo seems to enjoy his offerings. Either that, or he fucked Kate Upton last week. He owns him, though
Vaya con dios , pelota
What I can’t believe is you can hear peavy scream ‘fuck!’ After he throws a crappy pitch.
Ok Bochy, once again proves he knows more than this old hillbilly.
the more you post…or read, you’ll find you’re not the only one!
Buck Farmer? Is that for real? Sounds like a redneck porn star. But I kinda like it. Especially if he’s giving up HRs….
I don’t remember him from 2012, my bad if that’s who Pablo hit his 3rd HR off in game 1…
Pretty cool bull-dog effort by Peavy to get thru 6 (and maybe more) after that long delay.
Great video…At first glance, I thought it was Blake Shelton and our very own Blade on the acoustics….Townes is one of my musical heroes. As Steve Earle once said, “Townes Van Zandt is the greatest songwriter of all time… And I will stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table and say just that.”
I thought it was Blade too at first; was confused. Dylan supposedly wanted to record Townes’s songs; maybe he did. I think he wanted to write with him, too.
I fucked up part of the quote. I think it was ” I will stand on Bob Dylan’s cofee table in my cowboy boots and say just that.”
It’s not the same without the “cowboy boots” part.
The Manny Burriss Watch is officially over. He was great tonight (best I can recall: 1 HR, a 2B, two singles, maybe a SB). Chiefs lose to Pawsox, 7-6. Swept in our first postseason series since 1998. But a great year. From Opening Day till now I must’ve hit a dozen games. Now the melancholy feeling of ‘no baseball’ creeps in, sort of.
Did Pagan leave because he was hurt, or just to get some rest?
Why is it that ballparks and airports feature the hottest . . . never mind.
Pawlie, very cool that you go to so many minor league games. During my Boston years, I made it down to Pawtucket now and then. Love the .. what, innocence?, promise?, of the games at that level. Here’s hoping our SF Giants can roll with it through October to delay that melancholy feeling for awhile….
yes, the Giants as The Cure; you went to McCoy Stadium? Ever see the Lowell Spinners?
So, why did Ron Washington quit? The GM says it was not substance abuse. So what’s up? (Is alcohol considered a “substance”?) Depression? Divorce? Gambling? Health? His players seemed to love him. As for me, my enduring memory is that Bruce Bochy ran CIRCLES around him as a manager in the 2010 WS.
I could care less. I’ve always thought he was an average manager, at best. Who cares why he’s left?
So happy for Blanco’s renaissance.
Man …I really miss Twin not posting with regularity.
Agree
for some reason, he’s at the Merc. Doesn’t make any sense to me, but it’s how he rolls now
I know..I read that blog. But still..
THIS is OUR blog Flav…
Never saw the Lowell Spinners, Pawlie, but I liked their name… 🙂 I did go to an Atlantic League (I think that was the league) game in Nashua, NH once. And several times to see the Somerset Patriots in Somerville, NJ, where Sparky Lyle was managing for awhile. I think MacDog went to some of those games as well. Small town baseball, gotta love it. Oh, and thanks to Mac for posting that Schaeffer beer commercial a few threads ago.. memories 🙂
Ha, glad you liked it Paul. I’ve never been to the Somerset park, I just don’t get up to that part of Jersey much anymore. Plus I get my minor league fix with the nearby Lakewood BlueClaws, the Phils’ low A club. Yeah, Sparky’s no longer the manager. Somerset’s having a good year and they’ll be in the playoffs whenever the hell that starts.
After midnight there, the game’s not close, and the reliever is walking batters in the 9th? Not endearing himself to his teammates, I would guess….
