On Second Thought…….
I hadn’t stopped to think about the impact of the Ryu injury, but it could be a big deal. The Dodgers are going to come out of Colorado like most teams, with a chewed up pitching staff. Then they have to go to Chicago, a team filled with a bunch of young, strong power hitters who are looking to make a name for themselves, not quit on the season.
Two day games today and if all goes right we’re two games out? With a Dodger team that now has only 2 reliable starting pitchers?
This isn’t over……
The Giants could end today 2 games behind the Dodgers.
And currently the Pirates are making a strong push towards the #1 Wild Card spot, only behind 2 in the loss column.
A lot of bizarre scenarios could unfold. Like, what if the Giants and the Dodgers had to play a 1-game playoff to determine the division title, and the loser had to then play a 1-game playoff to determine home team in the Wild Card game against the Pirates, and THEN play the actual Wild Card game. They should probably make a tie for the Wild Card #1 spot just a coin toss situation for home field.
The Giants came close to some of these scenarios in 2010, had they lost that last game of the season to the Padres.
thanks, 2 games out possibly. I had it wrong.
WC Home field would be determined by head to head etc… not another playoff game.
Ah, thanks!
On last night’s late thread, I don’t care, really, what Posey says or doesn’t say in an interview. He’s supposed to cooperate with interviews, so he does. As long as he keeps hitting, that’s what I’m interested in. As long as he, Romo, Huddy and anybody else face the media music, whether they are covered in glory or have to explain a meltdown, I’m cool with it all. Anybody ever take a listen to Posey’s radio interview with Tolbert every two weeks? Almost unlistenable, a snoozefest. Or Romo’s once a week radio show on KNBR mornings? Same thing – ugh. Most of these guys don’t have a lot to say, and less is more. Belt is actually one of the more interesting to hear, he’s got energy and says a little something. Once he gets a bigger contract, maybe that goes away…
Ryu will miss 3/starts including Monday against G’s. Adv Peavy.
Then Bum vs Greinke.
2 of 3 doable.
But Giants have to take care of SD …7/games left with those pesky Friars.
Last night’s win was one of those skin of the teeth affairs. Flav, looks like SF also has only two fully reliable starters right now because Hudson has seriously slipped in recent weeks and Timmy is swirling downwards. Okay, so Petit is good more often than not and Vogie can tough it out from time to time. At this point it does not appear that either the Giants or the LaBumbos has the starting pitching to take the NL pennant.
We probably do get a post-season consolation prize, though.
I dunno.
Bum, Peavy and Petit with a good Pen effort are probably good enough for a deep playoff run, if run support is decent. Nats may have the best pitching, but they’ve got to get it done on the field, not on paper…
And those two amazing starts by Zito in the ’12 playoffs is a reminder how any friggin’ thing is possible.
Vogey’s last start (considering he had almost nothing to begin with) was not horrible. Take away the mistake pitch to Trumbo for a grand salami, and it really was not a bad game. Don’t be surprised if he pulls out a gem or two before it is all over.
I know you like him, Chi. I like his story, but he’s done after this season, at least with the Giants. He’s had some decent starts, but has been terrible against the NL West teams. Maybe he’ll pull a gem outta somewhere, I hope so, but I wouldn’t start him in a must win game unless there was nobody else. He needs some real big enchiladas right now…
I’m not in love with the dude. I just think if you looked at the number 4 or 5 starter for most ML clubs, you would find that he is as good as most.
Think G’s will need to sweep LA if they want the div. but wouldn’t that be an awesome way to have it play out— beating Kershaw in LA?
You’d figure just by the laws of probability and chance that the Giants are eventually going to get another win off of Kershaw. But it’s sure been a while…..
Giants injury report is not good.
Huddy has a hip.
Panda has a hip.
Pagan has a back flare up again.
Morse likely out till LA series (I’ll be surprised even if he’s ready then).
We’ll need good pitching to win with a LU that has Perez and/or Blanco as starting OFers. I’d play Susac every game and Buster at 1st to keep some pop in there, and Posey fresh…
at least all their gall bladders seem to be intact. Gotta celebrate the small victories. 🙂
Hey, it’s been a few weeks now. I’m getting into pretty “fresh” condition for the playoffs… 😉
Yeah, it shocks me that Susac has not played on a daily basis. Ishi can take over first from Buster in late innings if SF has the lead. Young Andrew is clutch, clutch, clutch ~ AND swings a big stick.
Ishi 1-3 last night, with a big hit that moved Pence to 3rd for go-ahead run. He’s batting .277, so it’s not like he’s been a black hole (see Perez) in the lineup.
Krueger on KNBR this morning said he ranked SF starters for a playoff series as Bum, Peavy, Vogelsong. Huh? Has he been seeing the same Voggy I have the last month? No way I send Voggy out there in the post season before Petit. Sure, he’s done it before, but Petit is fresher, has been solid, especially at ATT…
Agree. I would start Petit ahead of Vogey.
Getting ahead of things, but assuming the Giants are in the WC game and win it, isn’t it possible that both Bum or Peavy will both be on insufficient rest to open the NLDS?
Meant Bum AND Peavy…
If the Giants do end up playing the Wild Card game, and if they move onto the NLDS, this is the schedule:
WC game: Wednesday, Oct. 1
NLDS: Game 1, Friday, Oct. 3; Game 2, Saturday, Oct. 4; Game 3, Monday, Oct. 6; Game 4, Tuesday, Oct. 7; Game 5, Thursday, Oct. 9.
So whoever gets the start in the WC game probably won’t pitch again until Game 3 of the NLDS.
The rotation has been Bum, Huddy, Petit, Voggy, Peavy, with Bum going today. That puts Peavy, Bum, Huddy scheduled for the LA series next week. And, then Bum pitching the last game of the final Pads series at ATT on the last Sunday of the month. By then, if they know the playoff situation and Giants are in, Bum probably gets skipped then so he can start the WC game or the first game of an NLDS. But, with Huddy pitching poorly lately, they might take this off day tomorrow and maybe switch things so that Petit throws the 3rd game in LA, not Huddy…
Just now read yet another DJLOO classic: Posted at 9-16 on 9-16 (my 70th BTW): “Bum and Jake and Pray for a Quake”. Classic, i tell ya ~ spun offa “Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain”. Best takeoff on that one i’ve yet encountered.
I missed that one. Thanks for the heads up. He’s a genius, isn’t he?
He’s an asshole.
Happy Bday, Stick…
Yes, Happy Birthday Wiz!
Even with just 11 games left, there are tons of scenarious and possibilities. The only game that matters right now is the one that starts in a couple of hours. Win that one, and take a day off to try and get fresh. Then, and only then, do you consider the Friars. One day and one game at a time. GO GIANTS!
Yep. And Diego is going to play the Giants tough. No doubt about it. Really need to focus on getting this one today, and keep the WC home game in order, at minimum. Pirates are playing really well, do not want to go there to play a one game deal…
Is anyone on the ‘Dawgs still there from their 2010 meltdown? I’m sure there are a few . . .
Headley Lamarr certainly . . . I got nothing after that.
The Reds and Cubs could be major players in the division and WC races. Reds finish the season with 3-game series at Cards and home vs. Brewers and Pirates. Cubs have 4 at home vs. Bums and 3 at home vs. Cards, then finish with 3 at Brewers, who could be done by then.
For the Giants to have any shot at the division, the Cubs must take at least 3 of 4 from LA at Wrigley. Up to the Giants to keep winning, obviously, even if that happens. It’s possible, Cubs are playing well, and Ryu will be out…
No surprise, Buster to 1B following night game. I would’ve put MadBum 8th:
Blanco LF, Arias 2B, Posey 1B, Pence RF, Sandoval 3B, Susac C, Crawford SS, Perez CF, Bumgarner LHP
That is a scary ass lineup. Not in a good way. I would even put Arias leading off. Blanco just doesn’t do leadoff well. Perez? Bochy likes him some .171 “veteran” over Brown, OK. Brown is probably as good a fielder as Perez, and can certainly make outs as well as Perez does — why not take a flyer — he’s a RHB, too. Anyway, they’re facing a lefty unknown, two attributes that are killer for the Giants, which is why friggin LaRussa brought him up to pitch today. So, the Giants should win this one — screw LaRussa…
Holy shit. Not to rush Belt back, but I’d rather see him in LF and Charlie the Tuna in CF.
Yep, this is the patented Boch getaway day white flag tire fire lineup. He’s getting Pagan rested up for the weekend. So, he’s hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with Bum pitching, keeping the scoring down, in case this lineup gets lucky and grabs a few runs. If I’m Bum, this looks like I need to keep things to a 1 run day to get that 19th win…
Bummie 8th? I’d rather see him hitting 6th.
No kidding. Who would you want at bat if bases were loaded — Perez or Bum?…
No fucking question. Big Country. Sit the fuck down, Perez.
Charlie the Tuna will be available for the Pads series.
The West Pacific tuna fleet is based out of Diego…
Perez. No. He’s not even Darren Ford Bowker-Velez, Jr.
At least these are day games. The entire East Coast contingent thanks the scheduler-algorithim-person-bot.
Here’s my LU.
WTF not?
Arias
Crawford
Posey
Pence
Panda
Susac
Bum
Blanco
Perez
Pagan out again, and Panik gets a break.
1.Blanco LF
2.Arias 2B
3.Posey 1B
4.Pence RF
5.Sandoval 3B
6.Susac C
7.Crawford SS
8.Perez CF
9.Bumgarner P
Chuck–Headley Lamarr is a Yankee now. Good question if there are any holdovers from the Pads 2010 meltdown. Venable maybe? Tim Stauffer?
Oops. Did not see that Mac posted the line-up about an hour ago. I was really hoping that Pagan would be back today. Fuck.
Ahhh, that’s right. I forgot Headley left. . .
So, no one from 2010? That’s nuts.
Venable. That’s a shitload of turnover in 4 years.
Here’s the Giants 2010 WS roster.
10 of 25 still here, by my count. Mostly pitchers. Total outfield turnover.
You look at that roster — how did they win it all? Pitching…

Chi, hope you’re not in the way of that fire up there near Placerville…
Thanks, Tom. We’re about 20 miles from the fire. Much more fortunate than some we know in the area.
Another MRI for Pagan. . . .
If he’s out again or needs epidurals, we’re F’d for the playoffs. If surgery is needed, they gotta get that done in the offseason. Can’t have two more years of this Pagon and Pagoff…
Sherpas on on the bumbinos 3-0 in the first.
Per SF Gate. Pagan has a bulging disc that may need surgery. Hopefully the Giants don’t do what they did with 2nd base this year and rotate a bunch of AAAAAA guys through Center field. Hopefully they have a plan B for if Pagan is not ready to go next Spring are deep into next season. Of course 2nd base turned out pretty good this year. But having an Uggla in center field would not be good!!
Kev – right now, Plan B would be the same shit you’ve seen them trotting out there the past two games, unless they go out and get another OFer who plays CF.
Sherpas now up 5-0, runners on 1st and 2nd, two out. I love the Sherpas (today)….
Blanco 4 for 27 when in the leadoff position for the Giants this season. So, why not try somebody else to lead off, and Blanco down in the order, where he does better?…
Holyfeckingmackerel. Sherpas up 6 zip and 10 hits already. FIRST FECKING INNING. Too bad not against Kershaw.
Hope we see this Frias kid who WAS pitching for the bums. He just got yanked without getting out of the first. 11 hitters faced, .2 IP, 10 hits, 6 ER. Yowza!
We saw him on Friday…gave up 2 runs in 3in on craw dinger.
Yowza, I guess the Yetis answered the question whether Carlos Frias is the Dogs stop-gap starter. The Yetis just dropped a six-spot on him in the bottom of the 1st . . .
And, no Chuck, I didn’t see your Yowza when I played my Yowza.
WTF…Yowzas all around for the house!
8-0 now Rockies. The LA pen is going to get eaten alive today. That’s good, heading to Wrigley…
Snowman!
Nice of that veteran Perez to throw through to third on that fly, and let the runner at first move up to second…
Ouch. Got to take this one today.
What a increcible break there for MadBum.
‘an’
Anybody else see that pregame interview in the dugout with Bochy yesterday? He came across like he was drunk or something. He was kind of swaying, head lolling, speaking with slurred language. I think he was just tired and frustrated. The injuries are mounting at such a crucial point in the season, and he just didn’t seem interested in talking to the reporter about it. Bochy seems kind of laid-back, but he wears the losses hard, like a lot of other managers and headcoaches. Anybody that’s ever coached knows what I’m talking about. It’s exhausting, even when a team is doing well. Even more so, if they’re not doing well. Losses can be worn quite a while.
It wouldn’t surprise me if that 17-0 Dodger game is still grinding him somewhat.
On today’s pregame radio show, he seemed to talk resignedly about Pagan and his back. I’m not getting a real good vibe from that about Pagan’s near term future. Definitely he didn’t sound upbeat…
Crawfish!
Shit why doesn’t Bochy try and catch lighting in a bottle for a game and see what Gary Brown can do leading off?
Seen enough of Perez to say “No Mas”
Always a good omen when our boys score first.
I tell ya, I’d rather lose 17-0 than the way we did in those godawful Colo losses a couple months back.
Cody Ross making $17M over this year and next. Sheezus, the price of MLB mediocrity is high…
The pitcher? Really? Fuck!
Brutal.
I’d really like to see the team stat on hits and RBI’s given up to opposing pitchers, and where the Giants are on that list…
And, now Bum with the knock, right back at ya’…
But our Pitcher, base hit, fuck yeah!!
Speaking of 17-0, the Dogs are down 12-0 in the bottom of the 4th . . .
Yep. Sherpas with four field goals against the bumbinos…
What’s the deal with Flemming? It’s a Wednesday, middle of the week game, and he’s apparently doing a football game or something in Tampa. I’m guessing he’s made a deal where he gets ESPN gigs in exchange for not bolting to be the #1 announcer with another MLB team, while he waits for the foreseeable future for Miller to retire. Anybody got anything on this?…
Time for Bummie payback.
or that.
Crawford’s platoon splits are just crazy.
Well done shark
Sac bunt by Bum! Nice job.
Safety squeeze drag bunt by Blanco!
Holy smokes, 2 bunts in a row, and a RUN scores. Amazing…
14-0? Bahahhaha. Shit, we gotta take advantage and win today.
Sac fly? Blanco disappeared from GameCast
I step away for a second (had to get my office football picks in), and Blanco with the RBI off a bunt? WTF…we’ll take it!
ahhhhh. I guess that’s too complicated for GameCast to document.
Glad to see Bochy putting on the bunts. One of my few beefs with him is that he doesn’t use the bunt enough.
Oy, that is a brutal way to give up a run, on the swinging strike 3 and throw to first…
Whaaaat?
Swinging K by Trumo, ball gets away from Susac, he has to throw to first base to get Trumbo, and the runner at third scored on the throw to first and back to Susac…
That looked like a clear tie or better at the bag for Pence. These faceless umps in NYC are not going to overturn anything close, even if it looks probably wrong…
Giants really need this win with LA getting torched by the Rocks.
They’re going to have to do it with a popgun offense…
MudBug 3 for 3. I like it. Let’s see the boys score some runs!
Perez is 0 for August and September. . .
Bochy is hell on matchups and hot guys, but cold guys? Brown must be wondering what it takes to get a sniff of playing time, if he can’t get a start past a dude hitting Oh forever…
Be nice to see Bummie get #19 here
So much for that.
Just catching up with the gametrack. Blanco with a bunt??
shit, is Machi hosing this up?
Hoooboy. Time to win this bitch.
I never really noticed the speed of Romo’s slider in the past. He’s at 79 and 80 today. Has that always been the speed of it?
Panik needs to work on his D over the winter.
He had time to transfer and throw that one…
I thought it was usually around 84-85 . . .
We need a big fly from Panda, pronto.
16-2 Yetis over the Dogs . . .
WTF Pablo. Your fat ass should be at third, one fucking out! Belt! WHOOT! Let’s go Brandon!
Belt for Perez?
Ahhhhhh. Welcome back. Now do something!
