A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

On Second Thought…….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 17, 2014

I hadn’t stopped to think about the impact of the Ryu injury, but it could be a big deal. The Dodgers are going to come out of Colorado like most teams, with a chewed up pitching staff. Then they have to go to Chicago, a team filled with a bunch of young, strong power hitters who are looking to make a name for themselves, not quit on the season.

Two day games today and if all goes right we’re two games out? With a Dodger team that now has only 2 reliable starting pitchers?

This isn’t over……

The Giants could end today 2 games behind the Dodgers.
And currently the Pirates are making a strong push towards the #1 Wild Card spot, only behind 2 in the loss column.
A lot of bizarre scenarios could unfold. Like, what if the Giants and the Dodgers had to play a 1-game playoff to determine the division title, and the loser had to then play a 1-game playoff to determine home team in the Wild Card game against the Pirates, and THEN play the actual Wild Card game. They should probably make a tie for the Wild Card #1 spot just a coin toss situation for home field.
The Giants came close to some of these scenarios in 2010, had they lost that last game of the season to the Padres.

thanks, 2 games out possibly. I had it wrong.

WC Home field would be determined by head to head etc… not another playoff game.

On last night’s late thread, I don’t care, really, what Posey says or doesn’t say in an interview. He’s supposed to cooperate with interviews, so he does. As long as he keeps hitting, that’s what I’m interested in. As long as he, Romo, Huddy and anybody else face the media music, whether they are covered in glory or have to explain a meltdown, I’m cool with it all. Anybody ever take a listen to Posey’s radio interview with Tolbert every two weeks? Almost unlistenable, a snoozefest. Or Romo’s once a week radio show on KNBR mornings? Same thing – ugh. Most of these guys don’t have a lot to say, and less is more. Belt is actually one of the more interesting to hear, he’s got energy and says a little something. Once he gets a bigger contract, maybe that goes away…

Ryu will miss 3/starts including Monday against G’s. Adv Peavy.
    Then Bum vs Greinke.
    2 of 3 doable.
But Giants have to take care of SD …7/games left with those pesky Friars.

  4. stickman's avatar stickman said, on September 17, 2014 at 9:44 am

Last night’s win was one of those skin of the teeth affairs. Flav, looks like SF also has only two fully reliable starters right now because Hudson has seriously slipped in recent weeks and Timmy is swirling downwards. Okay, so Petit is good more often than not and Vogie can tough it out from time to time. At this point it does not appear that either the Giants or the LaBumbos has the starting pitching to take the NL pennant.

We probably do get a post-season consolation prize, though.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 17, 2014 at 9:46 am

      I dunno.
Bum, Peavy and Petit with a good Pen effort are probably good enough for a deep playoff run, if run support is decent. Nats may have the best pitching, but they’ve got to get it done on the field, not on paper…

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 17, 2014 at 9:49 am

And those two amazing starts by Zito in the ’12 playoffs is a reminder how any friggin’ thing is possible.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 17, 2014 at 9:59 am

Vogey’s last start (considering he had almost nothing to begin with) was not horrible. Take away the mistake pitch to Trumbo for a grand salami, and it really was not a bad game. Don’t be surprised if he pulls out a gem or two before it is all over.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:31 am

I know you like him, Chi. I like his story, but he’s done after this season, at least with the Giants. He’s had some decent starts, but has been terrible against the NL West teams. Maybe he’ll pull a gem outta somewhere, I hope so, but I wouldn’t start him in a must win game unless there was nobody else. He needs some real big enchiladas right now…

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 17, 2014 at 11:20 am

I’m not in love with the dude. I just think if you looked at the number 4 or 5 starter for most ML clubs, you would find that he is as good as most.

Think G’s will need to sweep LA if they want the div. but wouldn’t that be an awesome way to have it play out— beating Kershaw in LA?

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 17, 2014 at 9:51 am

You’d figure just by the laws of probability and chance that the Giants are eventually going to get another win off of Kershaw. But it’s sure been a while…..

  6. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 17, 2014 at 9:52 am

Giants injury report is not good.
    Huddy has a hip.
    Panda has a hip.
Pagan has a back flare up again.
Morse likely out till LA series (I’ll be surprised even if he’s ready then).
We’ll need good pitching to win with a LU that has Perez and/or Blanco as starting OFers. I’d play Susac every game and Buster at 1st to keep some pop in there, and Posey fresh…

    • stickman's avatar stickman said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:02 am

Yeah, it shocks me that Susac has not played on a daily basis. Ishi can take over first from Buster in late innings if SF has the lead. Young Andrew is clutch, clutch, clutch ~ AND swings a big stick.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:07 am

Ishi 1-3 last night, with a big hit that moved Pence to 3rd for go-ahead run. He’s batting .277, so it’s not like he’s been a black hole (see Perez) in the lineup.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 17, 2014 at 9:55 am

Krueger on KNBR this morning said he ranked SF starters for a playoff series as Bum, Peavy, Vogelsong. Huh? Has he been seeing the same Voggy I have the last month? No way I send Voggy out there in the post season before Petit. Sure, he’s done it before, but Petit is fresher, has been solid, especially at ATT…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:00 am

Agree. I would start Petit ahead of Vogey.

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:09 am

Getting ahead of things, but assuming the Giants are in the WC game and win it, isn’t it possible that both Bum or Peavy will both be on insufficient rest to open the NLDS?

      • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:10 am

        Meant Bum AND Peavy…

      • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:16 am

If the Giants do end up playing the Wild Card game, and if they move onto the NLDS, this is the schedule:

        WC game: Wednesday, Oct. 1

NLDS: Game 1, Friday, Oct. 3; Game 2, Saturday, Oct. 4; Game 3, Monday, Oct. 6; Game 4, Tuesday, Oct. 7; Game 5, Thursday, Oct. 9.

So whoever gets the start in the WC game probably won’t pitch again until Game 3 of the NLDS.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:18 am

The rotation has been Bum, Huddy, Petit, Voggy, Peavy, with Bum going today. That puts Peavy, Bum, Huddy scheduled for the LA series next week. And, then Bum pitching the last game of the final Pads series at ATT on the last Sunday of the month. By then, if they know the playoff situation and Giants are in, Bum probably gets skipped then so he can start the WC game or the first game of an NLDS. But, with Huddy pitching poorly lately, they might take this off day tomorrow and maybe switch things so that Petit throws the 3rd game in LA, not Huddy…

Win that one, and take a day off to try and get fresh. Then, and only then, do you consider the Friars. One day and one game at a time. GO GIANTS!

  11. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:28 am

The Reds and Cubs could be major players in the division and WC races. Reds finish the season with 3-game series at Cards and home vs. Brewers and Pirates. Cubs have 4 at home vs. Bums and 3 at home vs. Cards, then finish with 3 at Brewers, who could be done by then.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:35 am

For the Giants to have any shot at the division, the Cubs must take at least 3 of 4 from LA at Wrigley. Up to the Giants to keep winning, obviously, even if that happens. It’s possible, Cubs are playing well, and Ryu will be out…

No surprise, Buster to 1B following night game. I would’ve put MadBum 8th:

Blanco LF, Arias 2B, Posey 1B, Pence RF, Sandoval 3B, Susac C, Crawford SS, Perez CF, Bumgarner LHP

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 17, 2014 at 10:37 am

That is a scary ass lineup. Not in a good way. I would even put Arias leading off. Blanco just doesn’t do leadoff well. Perez? Bochy likes him some .171 “veteran” over Brown, OK. Brown is probably as good a fielder as Perez, and can certainly make outs as well as Perez does — why not take a flyer — he’s a RHB, too. Anyway, they’re facing a lefty unknown, two attributes that are killer for the Giants, which is why friggin LaRussa brought him up to pitch today. So, the Giants should win this one — screw LaRussa…

Anybody else see that pregame interview in the dugout with Bochy yesterday? He came across like he was drunk or something. He was kind of swaying, head lolling, speaking with slurred language. I think he was just tired and frustrated. The injuries are mounting at such a crucial point in the season, and he just didn’t seem interested in talking to the reporter about it. Bochy seems kind of laid-back, but he wears the losses hard, like a lot of other managers and headcoaches. Anybody that’s ever coached knows what I’m talking about. It’s exhausting, even when a team is doing well. Even more so, if they’re not doing well. Losses can be worn quite a while.

Holy smokes, 2 bunts in a row, and a RUN scores. Amazing…

I step away for a second (had to get my office football picks in), and Blanco with the RBI off a bunt? WTF…we’ll take it!

ahhhhh. I guess that’s too complicated for GameCast to document.

Glad to see Bochy putting on the bunts. One of my few beefs with him is that he doesn’t use the bunt enough.

Oy, that is a brutal way to give up a run, on the swinging strike 3 and throw to first…

    Whaaaat?

Swinging K by Trumo, ball gets away from Susac, he has to throw to first base to get Trumbo, and the runner at third scored on the throw to first and back to Susac…

That looked like a clear tie or better at the bag for Pence. These faceless umps in NYC are not going to overturn anything close, even if it looks probably wrong…

Giants really need this win with LA getting torched by the Rocks.
They’re going to have to do it with a popgun offense…

Bochy is hell on matchups and hot guys, but cold guys? Brown must be wondering what it takes to get a sniff of playing time, if he can’t get a start past a dude hitting Oh forever…

I never really noticed the speed of Romo’s slider in the past. He’s at 79 and 80 today. Has that always been the speed of it?
