A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Winning Ugly is Still Winning Good

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 10, 2015

I missed the game but when you don’t score for 11 innings, an error, a walk and a fisted single up the middle must have felt like a grand slam. This is going to be another year where our odds to win the World Series get worse each time we win a game like last night’s. 🙂

Regardless, that was a great win, a grinded win. Watching Pagan pop up at 3rd base with explosive fire is what this team needs. I can’t wait till we get pence back.

So who’s got Timmy throwing a no no tonight? I don’t, just wondering who sees that happening.

_________________________

Ok, now on to more important thing: this “Hesto Presto” nickname is not working for me. At all. I’ve given it some thought and here are my two ideas: If he hits the bench press hard in the gym, how about “Chesty Hesty?”….lqtm….Or maybe an old school Splash ref? “Hest-by-Hest?”

These are mine. Yours?

No lofty expectations for tonight, but I see no “no-no” for Timmy Jim. I am hoping he can give them five or so quality innings and have the team in the position to win.

While I did not go to the RiverCat’s home opener last night, a friend of mine did, and he told me they won on a walk-off HR by Duvall. Great night of baseball in NorCal last night.

I sent ya a text, Flav.

I see Lincecum going 7 strong. Hell, after the extra innings last night he almost has to.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 10, 2015 at 7:14 am

Boch did not use Petit (which was masterful in the grand scheme of things), so they have him if Timmy gets in a jam early. But I truly am expecting a decent outing by him. Dirt – are you going to the home opener?

      • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on April 10, 2015 at 8:06 am

No, I am not making the home opener. Most of my tickets are later in the season this year. I didn’t think about Petit.

I sure as hell don’t want to see a game like last night’s every night, but that was, to me, an entertaining game. Each time Huddy or any of the pitchers got in a jam, they got the ground ball and the D did its job. As was mentioned by many last night, Craw and Panik are turning into quite the tandem up the middle. And while McGehee had a rough night late with the two errors, I like him and think everything will work out. Aoki leads the team with hits…love the way he battles during each AB. And after the marathon that the game was…how fucking cool to see the non-roster invitee Maxwell get the game winning knock. Great job of managing the bullpen by Boch, as usual. The guy is without a doubt, hands-down, the best in the game today.

And I have mentioned this before, but sure love seeing Flan regularly on the post-game. I went back this morn and read his letter where he announced his retirement, and while I sure miss seeing him in the 3rb base coaches box, I understand why he left, and just really appreciate the guy for all he has done for this team over the years.

So the “wise guy” pick Pads not off to good start, dropping 3 of 4 to the teams they had their sights set on.
    See how they respond.
Giants win another close 1 run type game, using multiple pitchers. That’s gonna be a big theme 2015, Giants record in one run games. Off to great start.

Flem said on radio the ball Posey hit (in 11th maybe) might have gone out in the afternoon but not at night.
TL has fared very well vs. Pads but this is different LU. Hector back in as his personal C.
The one I’m looking forward to is Bum vs. Shields Sat night.

Credit to Aoki for going all out from where he was playing to make that running grab in front of Pagan, who was in position too.
He planned on getting there from jump, and made the grab.
Contrast that with J Up, who looked like he didn’t go anywhere near full speed and only got close enough to distract Barmes.
Maxwell, of course, is not a kid even tho he is first year in SF. He sounded in full vet mood talking to K and K after GWRBI, all business. Nice line drive up the middle in pressure situation–hope that is harbinger of things to come and he gets some spot starts in RF so Pence doesn’t go ironman again.

It’s early BUT- nice to see them winning pitcher duels and higher scoring games as well. Casilla has been nails and torture free thus far. Aoki takes some strange routes but a huge difference with the LU is Aoki in the 1 and Pagan leading off. They seem set to use Duffy as Super Utility and that seems right. With the great defense in the middle, all told this looks more promising than even this Polly anticipated.

  14. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on April 10, 2015 at 10:45 am

Yeah, twin. It’s early like you said but it’s easy to see how Pence will fit real nice in the LU. McGehehe has been about what expected but I don’t know man. Disregarding the errors, it seems like every game there is a play at 3rd that he doesn’t make and I’m sitting there thinking he should of. Nit picking.

Sounds like kind of a lame ad, but when you win 3 in 5, you gotta pay guys….

Speaking of paying guys, did you see the bit about my Sactown homeboy Matt Barnes saying when he was first in the league and not making much dough, he’d go to strip clubs with Iverson? He said Iverson would make it rain to the tune of 30 or 40 grand and Barnes said there’d be so much cash everywhere that he’d use his foot to sweep some of the money under his chair to either re-throw or stuff in his pockets! LOL! #DelCampoHigh

I heard the ad, it was fine. They listed off all the new players the Pads traded for and then said “you can’t buy a championship” or something to that affect. And when did anyone ever accuse the Giants of *buying* a championship? That tweet that Cumberland Chump posted is too stupid to even respond to

      • Cumberland Gap's avatar Cumberland Gap said, on April 10, 2015 at 6:37 pm

In reality, the only guy the Pads “bought” was Shields. The rest they acquired by using their minor league prospects and depth that other teams wanted. This strategy seems likely to paid immediate dividends, but whether it will prove to be a long-term success is another question entirely.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 10, 2015 at 6:52 pm

I think the ad was suggesting that they *bought* their new players with player currency. There are 2 ways to buy players (pay free agents or pay with trade chips). Either way, the ad was suggesting they didn’t home grow this new team that popped up out of nowhere. And there’s not a single thing wrong with the Giants, who have won 3 in 5, poking fun at the freaking loser Padres……

      • Cumberland Gap's avatar Cumberland Gap said, on April 10, 2015 at 7:01 pm

The fact is that an aggressive and creative front office has made them into contenders overnight. Given their recent history and inability to retain key players until now, this is quite an achievement. Nothing is guaranteed, but it has to look encouraging to Padre fans.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 10, 2015 at 8:02 pm

I have tickets to tomorrow night’s game and I had half a mind to take my daughter to tonight’s game as we’re both big Lincecum fans. Stubhub is already sold out and the game is over an hour from now. Very un-San Diego like to have such a thing occur. There is a lot of buzz down here about all these moves and at least for now, people are showing up. I’m very curious to see what the orange and black factor will be like tomorrow. Apparently, they have also swapped out their tiny video board for one that is now the largest in the NL.

Not sure if you or anyone else is aware but MLB has a program where you can “upgrade” your seat. Basically as long as you have a ticket to get in, you can upgrade to a prime seat for basically pennies on the dollar. You have to download the free MLB Ballpark app and about two hours before game time you can search for availability. I learned about this for the first time and scored a seat about 15 rows behind home plate for Wednesdays Astros game. The cost was only $18 (I paid $10 for their cheapest ticket at the box office). I guess this is MLB’s way of trying to compete with Stubhub. I had never heard of this prior to this week but I was seriously impressed.

Sets season record for most 3s, breaking previous record held by…himself.
Dubs edge Portland to up W total to 64 (and 15). Man I remember when they wouldn’t win that many games in 2 yrs.
So what I want to know is, does Steph Curry get your MVP vote?

  22. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 10, 2015 at 6:54 pm

Steph gets my vote mostly because he played significantly less than Harden. He sat entire 4th quarters over and over all year. Did Harden ever sit one? If Steph wanted to average 30 points a game he could have done so easily……

    • wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on April 10, 2015 at 7:03 pm

Unfortunately I don’t get to see Steph as much as Harden, but I can tell you that Harden has been flat out phenomenal. Without Harden the Rockets don’t sniff the playoffs. Howard has been out for more than half the year and I don’t think he has the supporting cast that Steph has. In the last few weeks alone he has taken down King James and Westbrook single handedly. But regardless of who wins, you can’t fault either.

-I’m fine with Steph Curry MVP. I’ve actually never really seen the guy play, but he sounds like an unreal shooter and his team (that I can’t stand) is having a great year, so I got no problem with MVP.

    -I don’t mind Cumberland’s brand of trolling.

-Flav, did you know what my 6:05 was all about? I’m confident you did. (Turnstiles)

-Wilco: I’m intrigued by this pennies on the dollar seat upgrade concept, but I’m not a big app guy. I’m tech phobic to begin with and worry that apps will sap my phone memory and lead to me getting more email.

When I was in high school, I had a big wad of ABC gum in my mouth during baseball practice. Some of us were walking in from the outfield after doing some drill and I had a bat in my hand. I spit the gum out into the air and I half-ass swung the bat at it with one hand. I hit it square and it went looping through the air and hit the head coach right in the chest as he was bending down to pick something. Amazingly, he didn’t feel it and the wad of gum stuck to the front of his shirt! Several of the guys saw what happened and were cracking up. I wasn’t laughing because he was a hard ass who would have gone nuts if he knew what happened. I tried to nervously tell him there was something on his shirt, but he was fired up about the next drill and blew me off. Finally I just reached up and grabbed the wad of gum and mumbled something about something being on his shirt. He never knew what happened. Completely true story.

Is that similar to what the Crazy Horse/Norris dustup was all about?

Also meant to ask you guys if Barry B was at spring training again this year?

  30. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 10, 2015 at 7:48 pm

That’s a great story. I can’t back Pagan on this one, he obviously chucked it at him. Had the gum changed direction or flicked off to the side I could back Pagan.
And if chucking gum casually at someone is going to touch off bench warnings than we need to re-eval how those bench warnings go down…….

I’d rather the mighty Casey struck out every once in a while rather than hit into yet another DP.

Maybe Sabean shoulda tried to unload Timmeh to the only city where he can get anybody out.

Loo, if Timmy has a year close to Portugal’s 1993, SF wins 90 games this year.

    • Cumberland Gap's avatar Cumberland Gap said, on April 10, 2015 at 9:54 pm

Timmeh’s last year in SF is likeliest to resemble the previous three.

Barry4Ever, I’m so sorry that the best hitter of all time is a fucked up cheater who played for SF.

These are two real offensive juggernauts. When facing the No. 4 and 5 starters, yet.

So, if Sanchez doesn’t take a shot to the head from the ball now he gets one to the noggin from a bat. Man, that dude should not be catching.

The one positive: 7 baserunners in seven innings. No runs on #55. Maybe the Dagos are his personal bitches and maybe Timmy will have a good year. But his start was encouraging. That makes 4 SF starters with good first games. Rotation could be better than feared or expected.

You can’t rag on Timmeh tonite. He got the job done, 7 frames and no earnies. More often than not, Gyros get him squat for runs. He deserved better than a no decision…

McGehee well on his way to at least the 25 double plays I predicted. Hell, at this pace, he’ll hit into 80…

  67. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 11, 2015 at 12:19 am

The Dodgers look vulnerable. The Giants just need to hang reasonably close with LA and SD until Pence gets back.

  68. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 11, 2015 at 12:24 am

Red Sox/Yankee games go long anyway, but 19 innings makes for an insanely long game. The Yankees are just like the Phillies; they grew old without reloading their rosters.
The Giants have a high average age per player, but that’s skewed because some of the pitchers are pretty old. The position players for the Giants have some good young players mixed in.

Good call Loo. I second your nomination for Hector’s nickname. Piñata it is (I copied piñata, don’t know how to put the squiggly thing over the n).
