A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

New York!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 9, 2015

So we should have at least a few NY Flappers going to a game this series. Or at least threatening to.

Sydergaard/Harvey/Niese. Jeez, that is a tough line up. Well, the first 2 anyway. I feel a beat down coming on but that could just be the fumes from last night’s bbq still wafting through my senses.

Here’s a pretty good article on our new stud first baseman Chris Shaw. I had completely forgotten about the Sandoval compensatory pick so Chris Shaw, for free, sounds good to me.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2015/06/07/chris-shaw-poised-top-pick-mlb-draft/FkwXlaLC3WO7BOtqHHCiiK/story.html

People are tripping on what this means for Belt. It means nothing. If Belt continues to perform he’s our first baseman. If Shaw rakes like he’s supposed to, he’ll bring a shitload as a trade chip.

It’s all good unless they both suck.

It’s funny how Bickford’s ganja bust knocked down his value. I bet half the first round picks smoke weed. Maybe all of them. I could care less that Bick lights up. I care about what he does when he’s NOT baked…….

Heading to Queens tonight, hoping to make it 2-0 on the road trip. Might be a little tougher, though, with “Thor” Syn-dah-gawd going tonight. Maybe Mets will have some trouble first time vs. Bright Eyes. No Murph this series, the latest Met to land on DL, but they should get back promising catcher D’unno, possibly by tomorrow. Hoping to see Pence back tonight.

I’ve seen John Barr in the media a bit today and he seems happy. If John Barr is happy with the picks then I am happy.

Duffy was chosen 568th overall in 2012. Consider the picks remaining I anticipate a homegrown starting outfield in no time.

    3rd round: #95 overall
    4th round: #124
    5th round: #155
    6th round: #185
    7th round: #215
    8th round: #245
    9th round: #275
    10th round: #305

Tip of the cap to Brian Sabean, who’s not only managed to win 3 World Series titles in 5 years, he pulled a rabbbit out of his hat by seizing 2 first round picks in the year following the third title. Yes, I know they’re compensatory picks, but still pretty cool.

    Well played, sir.

Syndergaard’s last outing was very rough. He got worked over. He knows he’s facing the most obdurate offense in the NL, limited pop but ohh that Conga line. A careful approach should work against this guy. Don’t try to do too much too soon. Keep working those counts. Dink singles, take walks and go the other way. Seems that approach has been this team’s M.O. in most of its victories to date.

Anybody care to project how many 3-2 counts Belt will put up tonight? Even when he ultimately (and frequently) K’s on those occasions he often wears down the starter. Now if he can remind himself not to go too long on the bullies, but go for the first decently driveable pitch.

  6. Carstie Clausen's avatar Carstie Clausen said, on June 9, 2015 at 11:03 am

My read on the rotational lineup for the Mets is that tonight our chances are fairly close ~ say 45-55. Tomorrow night could be the mismatch vs a very tough starter. We maybe have a 35% shot on that one. Game three looks something like 60-40 Giants. Taking one of three in NY without either Bumgarner or Cain on the mound for SF would not be a major catastrophe. It would make for a kiss your sister road-trip. Meanwhile the LaBumbos crunch and munch the Snakes.

  7. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 9, 2015 at 11:27 am

Syndergaard had one of the weirdest pitching lines in his last start, that I have seen in quite some time – striking out 10 Padres and giving up zero walks yet coughing up seven runs in just 4.0 innings of work.

As Stix alluded to, the Giants have the top road offense in baseball and are 2nd vs RHP with just a 17.4 K% against them. On the surface, Thor seems to be in a bad spot; however, the park is a big advantage for him and might play down to something more neutral.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on June 9, 2015 at 11:41 am

Cashner’s start the previous game vs. Mets was equally weird: 4.2 IP, 11 H, 6 R (5 ER), 12 Ks and 0 walks. I think it was the first time there were double-digit hits and Ks with no walks by a starter on consecutive days.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 9, 2015 at 11:47 am

Yeah, I remember that one too (albeit, the Thor pitching line hurt more, since I had him in a few DFS games). 😦

According to Henry yesterday in Chron, Giants are 14th in road ERA in the NL, only better than the Phils.
Gotta account for park factor, esp with 2 trips already to Coors, plus launching pads in Cincy, Milwaukee and Philly.
Hopefully Shea feels more like home to the pitching staff

Hey, for those who follow Sac, what about pen guys there beside Strick? Anyone that would make Affeldt (or anyone else) expendable/susceptible to mysterious groin pull?.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 9, 2015 at 12:07 pm

Willie, I would have said Steven Okert, especially because you mentioned Affeldt, and Okert is a lefty. However, he is having a hard time dealing with a hitters league (PCL) . . . Right now, he has a 4.33 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. The “good” is 33 SOs in 27 IP. I’m not an expert on how they weigh the fact he is pitching in a hitters league . . . Regardless, the Giants are very high on this kid, where I have read he has “closer” quality pitches. Very unique, since he is a lefty.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 9, 2015 at 12:29 pm

Imo, all the SPs (everyone not named Bum) that are only going 5-6 is gonna cause issues down the road.
Not sure the older guys can handle the workload, and Kontos early season success might not be sustainable.
At the point where a guy isn’t available (like other day when Romo was sick), one more live arm out there would help. Petit hasn’t exactly been what I thought he might either.

Yep. He is a righty. Big kid…I think he is 6’5″. In 25+ innings he has a 1.05 ERA and 0.818 WHIP. 38/6 Ks/BB.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 9, 2015 at 1:50 pm

I agree with Blade re: Okert. Yeah, he is scuffling a bit in Sacto, but is the lefty out of the bullpen probably closest to being MLB ready.

Well, I missed every pitch of Hesto’s no-no, but no apologies. I was at a senior awards night for my ACL-surgery-recovering-on-crutches daughter — actually, for her whole school, a tough urban school facing tough challenges — as tough as anywhere in America, I’ll venture. It was a heartwarming and rewarding event, seeing these kids excel and be cited for it. Lots of emotion. Lots of fun. So, then I went back to her and her mom’s house, and my daughter and I chatted about politics: labels, conservative, liberal, etc. The irony is that this diverse “liberal” environment kind of turned my daughter into a “redneck.” (Useless labels.) I reminded her how I had worked in Barry Goldwater’s 1964 campaign and went over Wm. F. Buckley’s house a year later. And look at my now! (Whatever that means.) Then my phone started blowing up with texts, which I ignored. Until I learned the no-no was “in the books,” to use the phrase of Mets announcer Howie Rose.

The lack of experience in the NBA Playoffs cannot be understated. I said it before, that could be their downfall especially against Labron.

    Curry is infuriating tonight.

3 turnovers down the stretch. But some key shots. I still think we can take this mainly because I don’t think deLly does this again. But game ; is monumental. And marl Jackson is an idiot.

This is their 3rd straight playoff appearance. I don’t buy that at all.

Yeah but they never came this far. Big difference between the finals and the first and second rounds.

Nice effort at the end but Labron took them to school.

Fucking Delly from st Mary’s. Saw him for 4 years there.

Still think we win this. Curry has to play 4 quarters. Not. 1.

    He was dogshit through 3.

Too much on Curry. Where’s Thompson, Dremond Barnes?

Heston is the first pitcher to end a no-hitter by striking out the side since Sandy Koufax in 1965, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Nice company.

So awesome that Mac was at the game! I listened through 8, then went to play some tennis. Verified the no hitter out on the courts.
Pawlie–awards assembly at my school was last night and I am the emcee. Always a great, but draining evening with some emotional memorial awards etc.
I’m obviously happy with the Cavs, but totally impressed as well. I only watched some of the first half, but I agree with the idea that slowing it down with LeBron running the point is a good call with the shape their roster is in. Still a long ways to go, but I’m glad the Cavs are showing some fight. Delly playing a key role on the Cavs is mindblowing. It felt like he played at St. Mary’s for about 7 years.

Congrats to Heston; you all said everything so well. I’ve got nothing to add. The Warrior game was a trip. That was an amazing comeback by the Warriors, but it’s the kind of thing you see in basketball, where a team digs a huge hole, and then makes a heroic comeback, and then just falls a little short at the end. If the Warriors can win Game 4, everything will be just fine for them again.

I could compare Duffy and Panda:
    Sandoval went 0 for 4, his last-place team lost 1-0, and he’s hitting .239, with 5 HRs.
We all know what the Duffster did tonight, and he’s hitting .289, and has 5 HRs, for his team that is 1 game out of first place.

      RBIs:
      Duffy- 26
      Panda- 17
