Snarkk’s POTD brilliantly tied together a thought I had while driving home yesterday. Someone on the radio was wondering if Kris Bryant had jumped ahead of Matt Duffy for ROY award. I was having a hard time caring about his point. And I thought, I don’t give a shit if Duffy wins the ROY or not. What has happened to me? In the past that would have been an award that I really would have wanted him to win. But since those 3 beauties have conga-lined their way into my life, I’ve have a hard time getting worked up about individual awards for my Giants. Awards like that are for fans of teams who never win anything. It’s like a consolation prize for not winning the World Series. Again.

The Tomlinson story is something that we have the luxury to sit back and truly enjoy. It is, as was said by a few last night, the reason baseball is our favorite sport. But what if we don’t win it all this year! Are we somehow less entranced by the magic of the Tomlinson moment? No chance. If we don’t win it all, so be it. And I will be able to look back on days like yesterday and truly embrace them in my memories. And I didn’t even see the game! But with posts like this, I FELT like I was at the game, baking away on Summer’s Warning Track. I can put my hand out and almost feel the wall:

I did! Great game, great weather.
Great moment when Tomlinson ran onto the field after the Giants were finally retired after his grand slam. The other Giants, unbeknownst to Tomlinson, slowed down and stopped, leaving Tomlinson to run out there by himself. The crowd gave him a huge standing ovation. He stopped and turned around at second base and just marveled that the whole ovation was for him.

Who didn’t love the Brian Dallimore grand slam moment of 2004? But a guy like Dallimore wasn’t ever a part of taking us to the promised land. Had he been, or had we had some recent trophies in the *fan bank* I might have been able to enjoy his weird, short ride in the major leagues a little more.

And I’m not trying to compare Tomlinson to a flash in the pan like Dallimore. I think Specs has a chance to easily turn into the next Joe Panik, possibly reincarnating himself as one of our starting outfielders next season……

Today’s POTD was also entered into “POTD-best of” which is, without question, the best part of the blog. Years from now I should turn this into a poetry book about baseball……

Snarkk’s wonderful POTD is also what Red Sox fans had to say in Pawlie’s Starry Night after they got eliminated late by combo of O’s and Ray’s comebacks. Once they had broken The Curse, they could handle day to day no matter how brutal, and live to wait for another season. “Multiple dark ages” indeed.

Should be good series this weekend; according to Chron today Cain still slotted to be SP Sunday. Hmmnnn.

Saw Bonds lost his collusion case, absurd, while teams were paying guys like that paragon of good citizenship Milton Bradley $5 mil. Bonds offered to play for whatev, too. No one could have used him as full time DH and batting coach on the side to offer advice to younger players? Face it, Aaron guy Bud made it clear he was NOT to be signed (and to STFU about it), and the guy who had 1.000 OPS at ATT at age 42 was out of a job.

  willedav: It may take a decade or two but Selig’s treatment of Bonds (with the full collusion of a majority of owners) will go down in baseball lore as one of the ultimate shithead actions by any Commissioner of MLB. As i’ve noted in many a prior posting Bonds’ participation in the amping was largely reactive to the antics of inferior players, McGwire and So-so blasting the single season HR record (with the tacit approval of their steroid use by Selig and the owners wanting to get the game back on track after the player strike). Bonds may have overdone the point, but whether or not he topped the steroid duo or Aaron’s record, he was already HOF bound as probably outranking Ted Williams as the best pure hitter the game has ever known.

  mlb arbitration, when you’re going up against mlb itself, is absurd. The current lead arbitrator, Horowitz, got the gig a couple of years ago after his predecessor was canned for issuing a decision mlb didn’t like. Kangaroo court. Bonds’s lawyers had no leverage in the case, and came up with no evidence. I’ll bet a full-on federal court lawsuit with electronic discovery searches of email and depositions of disgruntled former front officee people, etc., would’ve looked a lot different. Of course there was collusion. The persecution of Barry Bonds is one chapter in the dark ages of Giants history that even the mystical light of three trophies can’t bleach away. Bonds is, as I keep saying, the post-modern (or, if you prefer a more common lie, the “post-racial”) Jack Johnson.

    Agreed. MLB has participated in shifting fan steroid outrage onto a few, Bonds being the poster boy. The US attorney’s office wasted a decade of money and lawyer / investigator power into trying to “get” him. Like I’ve always said, he was a pr–k, but he was our pr–k. Maybe half the league was on PEDs, or more, during the zenith. So, Bonds never deserved the treatment he’s gotten from a league rotten from the top and within on this steroid issue…

Just can’t script Specs start in the bigs any better. Gets a base hit in his 1st big league AB, PH no less in front of his family in the stands, hits his 1st BL HR a GrandSlam no less, and his teammates give him his special moment of letting him take the field 1st after the inning was over. Watching professional hitters in twilight of their careers who are unable to field position at advanced age is really the only acceptable reason for the DH. I remember watching Harold Baines hit while being a DH for the A’s at tail end of his career. Paul Molitor could still hit .300 in his final years.
I’m sure Bonds as a hitter would still have struck fear into most pitchers and mgrs., esp if his body was freed from having to try and move around the OF.
And again I’ve never understood why a team with young hitters wouldn’t want them to be able to sit next to him in the dugout every day and listen to his advice…even if they couldn’t duplicate what he did at the plate.

Very emotive POTD. Like the cliché goes, it’s not the destination, it’s the journey. That’s what we love about this team and this game. The only real certainty we had in April was that the lineup in September would be different than the one in April. It’s been a great ride so far and the fun is only just beginning. Bring on the deadbirds, time for a little retribution.

And it is days like yesterday, with Tomlinson’s slam, POTD like snarkk’s, this blog, and the friends I have made via this blog (and some met in person) that really makes being a Giant fan all that more special.

Craig, I try to thank you regularly, and want to do it again. Thanks for keeping this thing running. Being a part of Flap Universe makes loving the game of baseball, and particularly, San Francisco Giants baseball, all that more rewarding.

Good match-up tonight with Wacha and Leake. And I obviously missed the Heston activation (actually have not seen any definitive news on this), but he is slotted to start on Sunday, per MLB’s schedule. Should be a good series…and one we need to win before he head to the latrine.

    Yep…I shared the projected match-ups for the bumbino series yesterday. Not to be looking too far ahead…we do need to dispatch of the deadbirds, first. But yes…some intriguing matchups. Lynn at 10-8 and Vogey at 9-9 is another interesting match-up. Can Vogey find magic one more time and move into double digits for wins for the season? And then there is the listing (by MLB) that shows Heston as the projected starter on Sunday in Cain’s place. I have seen nothing definitive on a move yet (activating Heston), and all of the local rags still are showing Cain as the projected starter on Sunday. Of course, if Heston were to be activated for Sunday, it can only happen with another pitcher going to the DL (Matt Cain…come on down).

Very nice, Tom. That pretty much encapsulates fandom at its essence. Being both a Niner fan and Giants fan growing up (stared getting into sports around 1968), there were flashes of hope (70-71-72, 76 Niners & 71,78 Giants) around years and years of suckage. Being a kid, those playoff losses for both teams in the early 70s hurt the worst. Dave Kingman and Preston Riley still make my heart sink a bit when I hear their names. But the astounding run by the Niners sure put to rest the demons that were previously haunting that team.

And the same goes for the recent run by the Giants. 2002 was a killer, as were the 93 playoff chase, and the 87-89 playoff and WS losses, and the 97 and 2000 loses to the Marlins and Mets. But winning like they have (in non-flash-in-the-pan fashion) has made it all the better. Time heals all wounds, but so does a healthy dose of hoisting the trophy.

The play that hooked me for good on Kelby wasn’t the Slam — as Grand as it was — but the one from the night before when he hustled like hell to beat the throw to 2nd, avoiding an inning-ending forceout and allowing the tying run to score. Cubs SS Russell, who threw like he expected it to be a routine out, must have been thinking, Where did this guy come from?

A lot of you guys do a great job of keeping up on the minors, to the point of being able to predict when they’re coming up. But I don’t recall anyone knowing about Tomlinson and Duffy. So, yes, what a treat it’s been watching these two players come out of nowhere and help keep the chances of a repeat very much alive.

Yeah, Mac, they showed that play after the game, and what was telling is Specs noticed that their 1st baseman stopped covering the bag before the pitch was thrown, so Tomlinson took a huge secondary lead. Like nearly half way to 2nd base. This allowed him to get to 2nd easily. Very very heads-up play on his part.

Yeah, Mac. The aggressive play on the base paths lately has been good to see. Even yesterday with Aoki. Sure he was thrown out at home but it was a reasonable risk and he forced the other team to make the play which ended up closer than I thought it would be.

Right, Willie, regarding Bonds. The investigation against him costs everyone (especially us taxpayers) millions upon millions of dollars, and drags through the courts for 12+ years, and is finally overturned.

His case against the league takes 10 minutes with a resounding thud. Seems fair.

While nothing definitive as far as a transaction, I did find this in relation to Heston being listed as the probable starter for Sunday:

“Right-hander Matt Cain likely will be scratched from his scheduled start Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals and will be replaced by Chris Heston, Giants general manager Bobby Evans said Thursday.”

  Excellent encomium for the Giants in that Sun-Times article. It’s those grinders down a ways in the draft picture which made the difference for SF this season and last year too, for that matter. Panik, Duffy and now Tomlinson seem cut out of a mold. They are all throwbacks to the days of sandlot baseball and the “Hit em where they ain’t” philosophy of Wee Willie Keeler. It don’t look purdy on the organizational rankings according to the prophets, prognosticators and poobahs; but when the pedal hits the metal these guys play head’s up baseball. No ego problems either.

To me, one of the joys of the 3-in-5 run is how players from all walks of life, from all stages of a baseball career, participated and reveled in it. Think about the rookies: of course Buster and Mad Bum coming up in 2010. Wow, what a start to their careers. 2012, youngsters like Crawford. Last year, Panik. This year, wouldn’t it be sweet to see Duffy and Tomlinson kick off their careers at the top of the world. Think about the oldsters: Hudson, last year, after such a long and successful career, finally getting his ring. Renteria, having his “book-end” World Series wins at the very beginning and then very end of his career. Old farts like Huff finally getting it, and Morse last year. Think about the journeymen: Torres, Ross, Blanco, guys who would never be *stars* but who all had starring roles with the Giants in this glorious era of Giants Baseball. I don’t know that this year’s team has the talent to overcome teams on fire this year like Pittsburgh, Cards, Royals, but this team of grinders is special and deserves a shot, for young and old alike. Here’s hoping for an “on fire” September!

  I guess what I’m wondering is, would we feel so fuzzy wuzzy about all these guys since 2010 if there were no rings? If they got close enough to taste it but never broke through. My guess is no. I think if we’d won none since 2010 we would be doing a slow burn like a mother fucker. And Tomlinson would just be another guy who was nice but not good enough. Like all the rest.

Missed most of this game. Went and saw Straight Outta Compton. Real good movie. My wife grew up pretty close to Compton, but in LA 1 mile is a different planet. One really eerie part in the movie.

    I think Tomlinson is adjusting to the speed of the mlb game just as well as Panik did this time last year. Terrific jolt right where we need it, and Leake and Byrd seem to offer the same. What a team.

    I did my first year of college down at Stockton State College in Pomona. Made that drive from Bridgewater to Atlantic City area SO many times, not to mention all the day trips as a kid to Pt. Pleasant, Asbury Park, Seaside, Long Beach Island….. enjoy!

Anybody see the little “Specs” gesture the team is picking up with Kelby? In the video, I couldn’t see who did it with him, but it’s like Pagan’s salute, except it’s a gesture like they’re pushing their glasses higher up the bridge of their noses. Too funny. A legend is being born….
