A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Shuffling the Shuffle

Bam Bam: bench coach. Wotus: 3rd base coach….

This is just getting stupid. Do any of these jobs even have any specific talent requirements? If Wotus is the best pick for the 3rd base coaching job what the fuck has he been doing sitting on the bench all these years??!?!!?!

I supported coaching changes because this crew proved unable to halt the slide that started when Duffy left (lqtm, I love that marker on the timeline) and lasted all the way to the end of the 2017 season. That is unacceptable and the people in charge need to pay a consequence for that.

But this is over the top. All of these random, haphazard moves wreak of a pomp and circumstance production designed to fool the fan base. “Look at what we’re doing season ticket holders!!!! We are SHAKING STUFF UP!!! Firing people! Fucking Ron Wotus is gonna fix all of this now that he’s closer to the field of play!!!!!”

This has gotten asinine.

I tweeted my dad last night the news of the coaching changes. If some of you remember, he did some masonry work on Wotus home this past summer. This was his response. “Wotus is a nice guy and all, but I could never see him as a big league manager. The Giants could offer him a clubhouse attendant role and he would probably take it”.

I forgot the details, but I remember Bonds embarrassing 3rd base coach Wotus by blatantly ignoring him in some way. It was very obvious – might’ve been at Shea…

might have something to do with analytics. LA and Houston both very analytics driven as opposed to Bochy and staff. How much a hitting coach helps guys end results is open to question, plus Meulens has been there since 2010 so he is still an insider. In his column Shea wondered about Meulens as possibility for Yanks job if they didn’t rehire Girardi.

Still think a lot of this, in line with Bell hired as VP of player development, points to FO being dissatisfied with young players—the ones they have drafted and how they have progressed through the system. Giants ran a lot of young guys onto the field and the mound last year at ml level that were either hurt, unproductive or both.

So this is first move in response–new guy to oversee upcoming draft etc., new coaches to work with young guys like Arroyo Mac Parker Shaw Slater and non vet SPs and pen.

What was up with Nevin? I didn’t think he did a stellar job as the thirdbase coach, but I thought he was someone the Giants were high on, and he is an old buddy of Bochy. His stay in SF went south pretty quickly.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 25, 2017 at 9:25 am

He’d been a AAA mgr. too. Always thought he was brought in as possible replacement for Bochy. Maybe it’s just weeding out Bochy’s buddies/different direction. Lot of mgrs. have been 3b coaches, even guys who were fired seem to get that job.
The whole bench coach as stepping stone is a new approach. The mgr still makes all the hard decisions (LU, PH, pitching changes etc), so you wonder just what this job entails. Has Alex Cora ever managed anywhere? Now he’s in charge of Boston, one of highest profile and most heavily scrutinized jobs there is, of all places.

With the Dodgers and the Astros being in the World Series, all the MLB teams will be “getting their analytics on.” Teams will be knee-deep into launch angles and spin rates, etc.
In the year 2020, there will no longer be any balls put into the field of play. It will be all homeruns, strikeouts, and walks. Fielders will be allowed to sit down during play.

  11. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 25, 2017 at 11:41 am

F/G had couple columns denoting big improvement this year Astros made in cutting down Ks and making more contact. Result was they had fantastic offensive season with great slash lines.
GM himself said they wanted more hitters that made more “hard contact.” Also said he didn’t think they could win consistently with 30 HR guys that struck out a lot.
He might be wrong about that, but he built his team a little different and here they are.

  12. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on October 25, 2017 at 12:05 pm

Every championship team is going to have a couple of guys who had “career years”. Here is a list of Astros who fall into that category:

Marwin Gonzalez- a Ben Zobrizt type that most people have never heard of. He put up MVP type numbers. The definition of career year.

Charlie Morton- one of the heroes of Game 7. He had a very solid year that likely won’t be matched.

Josh Reddick- not his best year by any means but certainly far better than anyone had expected and no chance he matches it next year and beyond. Played tremendous defense all season.

Interesting stats on B/R if you compare Houston and NY, top offensive teams in AL.

Stros led the league in: runs hits doubles BA (.282) OB SLG OPS (.823) second in HRs with 238 fewest Ks 1087

Yanks: 2nd runs 3rd BA 2nd OB (led league in BBs) 3rd SLG 10th Ks (1386) 1st HRs with 241

Houston had 10 guys with .450+ slugging…hope they wake up in time vs. LA!

    3. Fire Evans.
    4. With or without Stanton, or any other “one off” addition, the Giants still won’t sniff the playoffs. Wilderness years began in 2016 and wine sipper delusional fans just haven’t recognized that reality yet.
    5. If Bochy retires (doubtful), hire Will Clark – it’s a Titanic deck chair move, but will keep butts in the seats one more season.
    6. Regarding all coaching changes – it doesn’t matter, as we’ll more or less, still have the same stiffs on the field.

That’s a lot of money spent on intentional walks. Anyway, if Nightengale says he’s coming to the Giants, he’ll probably end up with the Dodgers. They don’t want to spend any more $? Why not?…

      Yup.
The Conga line model is bullshit in the super ball era.
Giants need Stanton AND Martinez, and then start loading up on more power on the bench, and in the minors. They had Bonds AND Kent, and a 2nd place NL total of 198 HRs in 2002, led the 2002 NL in OPS, 2nd best NL ERA, and even THEN couldn’t win it all. Stanton alone would be a fun PR move, and that’s it, because then the Giants will sing the “over budget, gotta fund the office/retail development” blues…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 25, 2017 at 7:24 pm

I told Mrs. snarkk heading into bottom 10.
There’s no guarantee this is a win with these F’in cockroaches at the Latrine. It’s hard to kill ’em…

That’s a pathetic performance from a closer. Gutless.

Giles’ asshole was puckered up so tight you couldn’t pound a pin in it with a jackhammer. What a choke job. Guy throws 98 mph and everything is away.

Some dudes just can’t pitch in crunch time.

the Astros pen was the weak link going in, and it’s the weak link going on

Was that Laz Diaz stopping the errant throw to 2B from going into CF? He’s good for something, after all.

Yeah Diaz almost had a nut removed on that throw..

Stros Pen crapout reminds of how good the SF Pen was 2010-12-14. No way that Pen in 10-12-14 would have coughed that up. That Pen had balls of steel…

2014? no. Bumgarner was the pen in games 5 and 7, although Affeldt still contributed a bit.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 25, 2017 at 9:13 pm

In game five, nobody even went down to the pen to warm up.

Affeldt pitched 2.1 frames in game 7…

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 25, 2017 at 9:26 pm

yes, I know. But Bumgarner went the final five and Bochy never considered sending in Lopez or Romo or Casilla after Affeldt. Nor did he appear to consider any of them, including Affeldt, in game 5.
