Treading Water
Yesterday was a perfect example of the preseason fears that some pudits had for this team–the other team hit a little better than we did and pitched a little better than we did. Dyson is losing Bochy’s trust fast but we may have found something in Suarez—I love his windup, he hides the ball well, and he didn’t seem overwhelmed by the excitement of his first big league start.
I am optimistic about Stratton tonight, he will pitch well enough to win. San Diego is coming off a heated series in Colorado and teams, in general, don’t hit well in their first game away from Coors. The question is, will we hit enough to win?
that was a great brawl yesterday but Perdomo didn’t even hit Arenado, did he? Maybe grazed him? Imagine how livid he would have been had he taken one in the ribs….
Myers and CF Margot, couple guys who have hurt SF are on the DL and few of their hitters are struggling too (Headley is at .050). Pads are second in NL for bombs with 15 but that is coming off series in Sherpland.
Ross and Richards the 2 guys they start Fri/Sat have ERAs over 5.00. I was hoping SF would take a look at Tyson Ross, guy I’ve always liked who can’t stay healthy.
Anyway I’m sick of watching Pads with about a third of Giants payroll whomp SF for last year and a half solid.
They are 4-9 dead last in division and 1-6 at home. Comp gets lot tougher soon with rematch at AZ Angels Nats Dodgers…anything less than split here I’d be disappointed.
There was some baseball chatter this spring that Suarez may have the best upside than any of the younger pitchers. Does he get a 2nd start?
unfortunately Beede is in line for the start, I think Sun, so even though Suarez was better I don’t know that he’s guaranteed another start. Yet.
Danke
Warriors got best possible match up imo in Spurs. Love Pop but he doesn’t have near as much to work with.
Got to get past them without Curry sure but whomever survives to second round in West will be much tougher opponent.
Kerr has to be solid here too and figure out how best to match up his bigs and make sure his team has control of ball boards and tempo.
Met up with Dodger fan gal I know from Long Beach for dinner. She loves Joe Jost and feels women comfortable there.
Unaware A’s pounded them last night 16-6 and lit up Wood for 7 runs by 4th inning, but she was very disappointed in Dodgers-Giants series results lol.
Kinda funny that Kemp and Grandal are their 2 best hitters. Kemp was an afterthought they hoped to unload and is now hitting .355. Grandal got benched in playoffs and Series last postseason for Barnes at C and is batting .375 with couple bombs.
Out of Taylor Seager Forsythe Pederson no one is hitting better than .214. Hope Giants can keep ahead of them for as long as possible
Colorado was the story early on last season. In 1st, while the Dodgers were scuffling along with the Giants (although not as bad as the Gmen). They were 14-12 in April, with a month ending 4 game winning streak.
I was busy most of last night, so only saw a little of the game. Suarez looked good despite the 4 runs given up in 5.1 innings? Also, I didn’t catch James POTD either . . . Hilarious.
With the Warriors it’s the ball handling. Lazy turnovers are their curse. That and 2nd chance points. Green is insane with about 25% of the passes he tries. KD has been lazy as well with the ball handling duties in Steph’s absense. We should get through the Spurs in 5, but they need Curry back to go anywhere else.
And hopefully the Portland-Pelicans series is drawn out to 7 games and then Houston will have a battle with either the Thunder or Jazz…
And yeah, the sooner we start feasting on the Pads the better. They’ve had our number for quite a few years now.
I can’t believe you wrote that or that it’s even a reality. So many years of pounding the shit out of the Friars that it’s hard to fathom we don’t do it anymore.
I missed the Yanks-Six semi brawl and finally got to see the Rockies-Pads fight. There are some jacked up players in the game today, of course all natural, and there was some big boys in these dustups. One of the by-products of all the natural “juice” is short tempers…we may see more fights than ever…
Good chatter last night on NorCal places. Above Sac heading noeth is another world. I’m very familiar since youth with Trinity county and north coast. Have fished on Trinity and Klamath and Smith since I was a kid. Weaverville has family ties. Anybody been to Hayfork, the canabis Capitol? Very interesting. Remains to be sen how MJ legalization impacts the economies of the counties in NW California…
When I moved up there from Monterey in 1992, I was shocked by the cultural differences from the bay area. Perhaps a surprise to me, despite traveling quite a bit even back than. Clinton had just been elected President as a “faux” Republican, so you didn’t hear a lot of complaining about him back than from folks I worked with or became friends with, even that far North. However, it was readily apparent via local radio that I was on a different planet. If I recall correctly, Limbaugh, Ollie North, and G. Gordon Liddy were staples up there 24/7. Quite a shock to my liberal sensibilities. I would listen to all of them for shit and giggles. Ironically, we have Trump now and my worst nightmares – foretold by Limbaugh, North, and Liddy – all have come true via the DC Moron In Chief. #SMH . . .
when I lived in Davis, late 80s, Limbaugh was just starting out on local Sacramento tv. He used to debate topical issues with the liberal mayor of Davis at the end of some station’s evening newscast. I thought he was absurd. A lot of people in the Sac/SJ valley liked him, however. Strong currents of that stuff in every state.
Yeah, good talk about great NorCal places. The Lost Coast was my favorite place up that way. Only went a few times but all were memorable and powerful, from walking the Lost Coast Trail up those black sand beaches, to hiking up King Peak in the King mountain range along the coast. Also a prime ganja growing area. Took my Jeep up there a few times, and learned that some of the off-roads were cool, but others, with burned-out shells of old cars blocking the way, no……
My ex-wife was an avid backpacker (her family was Sierra Club forever) and introduced me to the outdoors in a way that I had never been exposed before. However, one of my biggest regrets was not hiking that 25 mile “Lost Coast” trail. We did do a 1 day hike near the Shelter Cove trail head, but alas, never completed the entire 3-4 day hike.
Love the Lost Coast. Like Blade, I have never done more than some day hikes there, but absolutely gorgeous country. I believe it is the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in North America.
“Kinda funny that Kemp and Grandal are their 2 best hitters.”
And it’s pretty funny that they were traded for each other a few years ago.
Since my expectations for the start of this season were somewhat low anyway, I’m somewhat enjoying watching this team try to navigate and, as you said in your lead, at least tread water while amazingly being without their top 3 starters as well as the supposed closer and supposed top lefty in the pen. I’d call that a decimated pitching staff, and they’re doing ok, let’s see what some of these players got going. A bit more timely hitting and run-scoring would also help prevent drowning. These 4 games in SD could be fun.
I recently read a reference to the wonderful TV show “Remember WENN,” a funny and nostalgic comedy about the “golden age” of radio. I really liked the show a lot, but it seems almost totally forgotten now. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and there were actually more episodes of it than I had remembered.
“Remember WENN is a comedy-drama television series that aired from 1996 to 1998 on the cable channel American Movie Classics. Created and written by Rupert Holmes (with music also by Holmes) and set at the fictional Pittsburgh radio station WENN in the late 1930s and early 1940s, it depicted events (both dramatic and comic) in the personal and professional lives of the station’s staff in the era before and during World War II. It is not related to the real radio station in Alabama known with the WENN call-sign from 1959 to 1983 and from 2009 to the present.
The show ran for four seasons totalling 56 episodes, including an hour-long Christmas episode. The series was slated for a fifth season, but was cancelled when new management took over AMC. Holmes says that it was his favorite writing experience in his career.”
Apparently it was never put out on DVD, and only exists on people’s bootleg videotapes. That’s too bad.
Even more than the Pina Colada song?
🙂 🙂 🙂
Got to hang out with a couple Mets fans/former co-workers last night while watching Mets-Marlins. Mets sure are on a roll, but they got a little help from Mattingly to win 8th straight. Fish starter Garcia had a no-hitter going thru 6 but got pulled after a whopping 77 pitches, and bullpen predictably blew up in the 8th. And for whatever reason, Mattingly yanked cleanup hitter Bour, who hit 2 bombs the day before, in a late double-switch.
I’ll be at the game tonight. Co-worker has season tix and knows I’m a Giants fan. I usually pass on weeknight games as I live a good 75 minutes from Petco, but the seats are good and I’m anxious to see some live action.
Vibe down here is that the fight brought the Pads together and that will hopefully snap them out of their early struggles. Yeah, I think Arenado and the Rocks were on the wrong side of that one. 3 Pads had gotten hit in that series already including Margot taking a painful shot to the upper ribcage which led to him getting taken to the hospital and put on the 10 day DL. And then yes—Arenado didn’t even get hit. I give McGwire credit for putting hands on him and getting in his face.
Been wanting to catch a game down there for a while. Went to the Murph years and years ago. We were in the gaslamp dist. in Feb of last year and it was real nice. Lots of cool shit around there.
Yeah, not sure why Arrenado was the one to break the ice. The Pads were getting plunked left and right for a couple days. The mitt toss was epic though. The Boston fight was a little odd as well as the slide at 2nd wasn’t all that bad. Shit, they don’t wear metal spikes anymore so the ‘spikes up’ claim is weak sauce. It wasn’t even ruled an ‘illegal’ slide. A tad late, but he stayed on the bag. Fucking Scoots nearly got his knee torn off in the payoff game and didn’t pitch a fit. Tyler Austin looked pathetic in that fight as well.
The Pelicans are a big surprise to me. Gentry did a great job after Cousins went down. Yeah, we were 3-1 vs NO but of course the loss was w/o Steph. Portland is another schitzophrenic team. They were all over the place this season. They can be deadly or dean in the water.
I think we can fairly easily handle the Spurs mainly because the Spurs are outgunned by us. After that, we’ll see where Steph is.
Well if Dyson has lost Bochy’s trust where does that leave Oshit??
I noted this happening to Dyson a few weeks ago (before the season started). He was already going downhill the last couple of months last season.
again, he was very bad last Sept. He was very good after the Giants acquired him in July and August. The theory was he wore down in Sept. But watching his last two appearances, he’s just not been sharp, leaving balls up. Regardless, if he isn’t going to be able to get back to how reliable he was back in July and August he really doesn’t have a place in our bullpen.
Texas had no problem dumping him for assignment last season, right?
We can only hope so Xoot. As Flav indicated, he was very good initially with the Giants, but now he’s reverted back to what Texas had.
Raggs was bragging about fixing him last year. The results did seem to speak for themselves. I was optimistic because he pitched so well for 2 months and believed it when they said he ran out of gas in Sept. But what I’m seeing now, yeah, not looking good.
Dyson’s a pisser. I was hoping we got a steal there but he’s not what he appeared.O’Shit and O’krap should be o’Shitcanned immediately. The good news is Suarez can take one of their spots in the pen once the starters get healthyed up.
Trade Belt for a couple relievers . . . Bring up 1st baseman Dillon Dobson. He’s flying (well moving sedately) up the ranks. He’s on the Squirrels now . . .
“O’Shit and O’krap should be o’Shitcanned immediately”
Frickin’ funny Chuck. Nah, don’t trade Belt yet. I want to see this all play out until mid-May before they think about getting rid of Belt or any of the other veterans. Yeah though – “O’Shit and O’krap should be o’Shitcanned immediately”
“Went to the Murph years and years ago.”
The closest I got to the Murph was about 20 or so years ago. I was at a convention in San Diego, and from my hotel room window I could see the fireworks one night after a Padre game.
I did go to the old town area, and also the amazing zoo. The weather was great, of course. You can’t help but like San Diego a lot.
Speaking of surprising political areas in California…..on a visit to Anaheim many years ago, I read their biggest newspaper, the Orange County Register. I was not expecting such an overtly conservative newspaper. It was from such a different angle. I didn’t know that Orange County had such a big conservative demographic.
Full of old white people.
article on The Athletic today about the sudden decrease in HRs (down 14% so far) and the definite increase in drag, or air resistance, on the ball (compared to last year in particular). I bet mlb re-tweaked the effing yarn the workers in Costa Rica use to hand-stitch the ball.
I want to see the Giants hit a shitty pitcher for once. Bryan MItchell (who sucks) has no business shutting the Giants down on 1 hit thru 5 innings. NO BUSINESS. I’m tired of this shit, hit this fuck tonight!
Dyson fits neatly into my theory of diminished expectations, i.e., he only has so many good innings in him. Once he uses those up, he’s toast and everything goes downhill. Kontos was another one like that.
The Pads hit T Story in the first inning, the Rox hit Renfroe in the second…at some point a guy is going to go off, as Arenado did leading off the third and getting ball behind his back. Funny thing is, it was the Rox who woke up and scored 5 in the third and won the game.
the James POTD was classic, I lqtm every time I read it.
What will snap the Padres out of their early struggles is the Giants arriving in SD. That should be all they need. G’s need to get some runs on the board early.
I still can’t tell most of the time if James is defending Belt or dogging him. Most of the Sabermetrics stuff puts me to sleep. James?
he defends him. And the POTD was him ranting as a joke
If he’s defending him I think it’s time for James to get his stink on!
Yeah, I got the joke, just not Sabermetrics so much. lol
And it was funny.
So which two pitchers remain in the rotation after Bumgarner, Cueto, and Samardzija return?
Irrespective of options, which of course the decisions won’t be:
1) Depending on how they do in their next starts, either option Beede or DFA Holland
2) Same
3) Option Ostrich, make Blach the long reliever, Stratton and Suarez in the 4/5 slots.
Holland isn’t going anywhere – 9.82 K/9, 4.09 ERA, and 0.82 WHIP in 11 innings . . . IMO, he’s been a revelation and a lifesaver in lieu of our decimated starting pitching. Dunno if he continues to get a starting role, but he’ll have a role regardless.
Beede showed me zero (except as K and K noted – he didn’t shit his diaper). Blach and Stratton will remain too. Dunno about Suarez – it could be a numbers game and he goes back to the minors for more seasoning. Again, I didn’t watch the game last night, but from comments here, he did very well.
Hey all – been busy as hell, but wanted to let you all know that I got a letter from Stix yesterday. He is in Ohio.
Haven’t had a chance to read it all yet (eight pages). I told xoot last night I will PDF it and shoot him a copy via email, and will also send it to you, Flav. You can decide if he wants to post it to the blog, Flav. Go Giants!
Ohio??? Did he break out of jail? Go Stix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chi, can I get a copy via email?
I expected the Ohio change. A federal website lets you locate any federal inmate by name, and it says our man is in a low security place in Ohio. I’m sure the long letter will explain it all. The fact that he drafted that letter is itself pretty encouraging. Can’t wait to see it.
at least it’s low security, that’s probably like being at a shitty club med, right?
Definitely better than being in the general pop of a max security penitentiary.
well, they’re called Club Feds–but we’ll get an inside look, perhaps
Flav you should make a Stix page.
Maybe a Trump page for Giant Head too. lulz
what would the content be? A rolling clock ticking down till he gets released?
Suarez back to Sac, Derek Law called up.
the Giants are shuttling players back and forth along the Capitol Corridor the way the a’s used to. Necessary under the circumstances. Williamson will be here soon imo. Duggar? Who knows. Beede looked better than I expected, but my expectations were low. Suarez really has promise. I agree with others that Holland’s the one guy who could provide some starting stability behind Cueto and Smarj. They may survive April at .500 and then get going. Rotundo Moronta could be key.
I could be wrong, but with Sabes back in the saddle, I think player moves will be faster and more furious this year. No diddling around with the same dudes cratering while the team goes down the dumper like last season…
I didn’t know Sabes was “back in the saddle.” Evans is out, or reassigned?
Essentially, Sabes was pulled from his job and told to “shadow” Evans. Consequently, Evans is still the GM, but nothing gets approved without Sabes okay. Sort of like The Godfather, where Sonny just got killed and Michael was promoted, but his father, Vito just awakened from his coma and is again, back in charge . . . umm, I think.
Baer (Fredo) is still in charge of promotions and real estate.
As soon as you put in Godfather terms it clicked.
I don’t know Snarkk.
Mac the knife is tearing it up in sac,.588 average 5 doubles and 3 bombs, with OPS at a stager-ring 1.750 yet he can’t sniff the bigs cause Bochy’s afraid someone will pickup Blanco lol 😂.. this shit needs to end in Bochy World, we need power not a banjo hitter who’s 34. Same could be said for Pence but of course we all know he’s not going anywhere jeez..
Angry Tiger Fan threatening to drink his piss if Detroit comes back and wins the game tonight, Jesus….
Haven’t we seen this dude before?
yes. there is still a link on the right side of the blog to his epic rant from last year
we’re gonna see Suarez again…..
“I didn’t know that Orange County had such a big conservative demographic.” – -zoom @ Noon
Yeah, the OC is an odd county. Like unca said, it has many pockets “full of old white people.” I would add “wealthy” to describe many of those as well. It’s such a huge county, running from Seal Beach all the way down to San Clemente. TONS of old money all throughout Newport Beach, Laguna Niguel, Dana Point, pretty much all of the southern half of the county – lots of old-school Republicans – not Trumpsters. Laguna Beach used to be an island of liberalism, really an artsy enclave, but has been swallowed up by the surrounding money, like a lot of other paces – same with Hermosa Beach and up here where I roam.
One thing I can’t stand about the OC, you go inland a little ways and it’s full of tract housing. Irvine, Tustin, Mission Viego, Lake Forrest – still wealthy areas, but everything looks the same – no character to the neighborhoods. Ugly gated shit. I’ll take Venice over that crap any day.
Yeah, I went to an event in Irvine about 20 years ago. I remember thinking it was the most nondescript city I had ever been in. It had an overpowering blandness to it.
damaged goods…….
Melancon had to have been damaged goods when he signed the deal. Giants medicos must have missed it, whatever it was/is. Maybe it was subtle, I dunno. I gotta think Melancon had an inkling or knew well something was up. If he hoodwinked the Gyros, that’s no bueno. The Nats must have sniffed something and accordingly said via con Dios…
If that doesn’t work, I would suggest a combination pentobarbital, pancuronium bromide and potassium chloride…
Speaking of pee . . . https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/12/politics/comey-book-golden-showers/index.html
blade, if that story were true and there were video, and even evidence the Rooskies tried to use it to leverage the Dear Moron, it still wouldn’t make a dang bit of difference to the Drumpfistas…
You’re right. Not a bit of difference.
I thought we don’t talk politics here…
Wouldn’t that be nice.
It wasn’t till yesterday that I realized it wasn’t the same crummy Suarez that pitched for the Giants the past couple of years. I couldn’t figure out what all the optimism was about. I thought some of you guys were losing your minds…
djloo27 said, on March 21, 2018 at 6:12 pm (Edit)
Suarez has the upside of a corpse…
It took me a couple of weeks to figure that out myself. lol
Yeah, something strange about “the OC”. Had a favorite cousin as a kid, a bit older than me, Beetle-driving, road-trip-loving hippie chick, from Chicago area. She ended up moving to the OC. Next time I saw her some years later, she was a card-carrying right-winger. Something in the water, maybe.
Cool and damp apparently at Petco tonight.
Stratton’s good hook should have plenty of bite; so a good out pitch tonight,if he has command. I could see him getting 8 or more Ks tonight if he goes 6+…
It IS a little cool here at Petco. Not much of a crowd at this point and we strolled right in like it was a meaningless game in September. Had a tall Bud Chelada and a tall Dos Equis with a Carne Asada torta mixed somewhere in the middle.
I’m ready to go.
If Melancon was damaged goods, he sure had one helluva season while damaging his arm.
Like Robb Nen…except nobody was dumb enough to give him $60 million after 2002…
See? Just had to yell at them a little.
Holy shit Belt just tried to bunt down the line!!!
Five walks already, this Pads pitcher has a case of the Beedes.
Blanco Jesus Christ. Bunting is like the one thing you’re supposed to know how to do!
Uh, can someone explain what the logic was on that “bunt and run”, or whatever that was. Run and bunt more like it. I’ve thought a little, and I’m coming up empty. Even allowing for pitcher up next, doesn’t make much sense to me. Blanco could have tried to hit a sac fly, for criminy sakes. Or I’d be down with just do a safety squeeze bunt without sending Craw, and you avoid the possible double up of Craw on a botched bunt, which is what happened. I won’t even go there on Blanco’s bad bunt. Giants find ever more amazing ways to piss away almost sure run scoring situations…
i dunno, maybe Craw got screwed up on the sign or Blanco got it wrong.
That seems more plausible than anything I can come up with…
That rally really disintegrated.
Let me take this opportunity to reset my position on bunting. I hate the bunt. I would love it if we never bunted one single time in a season. Its kind of a chicken shit move in my book, plus almost nobody knows how to do it.
Swing the bat and let the chips fall where they may. I’m not a real big fan of the weak ass gounder to 2nd that moves the runner over to third either. (With apologies to my great friend WilleD)
lol great mid game take!
I still like the bunt, but at the proper time. Proper situation.
That wasn’t it.
I liked Bochy’s move just before, when he sent Longo to help open up the infield for a slumping Craw — and it worked. Followed by the head scratcher move…
Glad the Pirates are giving the Cubs a run for their money.
The play I hate is the guy who singles in someone else and then gets thrown out on the cutoff throw. Sometimes the batter is intentionally trying to draw that throw. I hate that play.
Often tried where the runner heading home is a slow one…
I really like Petco.
Great ballpark.
Hard to beat the Gaslamp district for pre and post game.
IMO it’s way better than the area around ATT…
i never thought about it before. The bunt IS kind of a chickenshit move lqtm
Did you like Huff’s bunt in the 2010 clincher?
of course. But Diggity’s got me looking at it from a new perspective now…..
The bunt is as old as the game.
It takes some skills and coordination to be a good bunter.
Any dipstick can swing from the heels…
Love the bunt, especially when the other team employs the dipshit shift.
strat doesn’t miss many bats….
10/19/2012
Zito’s classic bunt v. Cards in inning 4, game 5 NLCS for a single and RBI…
absolutely.
One thing I’ll hand to Zito, he was a damn good bunter.
Especially since he started out as a long time AL pitcher who never took ABs…
Diggity has a way of selling me on shit, I don’t know what it is….
Stratton very fortunate on that pitch to Hedges.
Glass Sanchez sac bunt in Game 6 of 2010 NLCS to put runners on 2nd and 3rd, both runners would eventually score to tie game at 2-2.
The suicide squeeze is a fairly exciting play when correctly executed….
Infield dirt power there from Belt. TRADE HIM!!!
I especially hate it when a position player bunts. It sends the message to that guy that the manager doesn’t think he has it in him to get the job done himself. Roger Craig used to have Robby Thompson bunt all the time and it drove me fucking crazy.
You only get 3 outs, lets not give any away. ESPECIALLY when hardly anyone knows how to bunt anymore.
The bunt attempts would look a lot less chicken-shitty if they had players who actually knew how to get one down.
I would argue they would still reek of chicken shit, but at least they’d make a bit more sense.
A good amount of Giants fans here, but nothing like you’d see in the 3 in 5 days. That’s fine by me. I like to see some thinning of the bandwagon.
Not many people here. 22 grand maybe?? Probably a bit more than that.
Fucking A they can’t get a run even when then get a hit with a RISP(thank you both pence&Wotus) then Belt a flair fart to SS no advance!
And what the fuck let’s have their 3 rd basemen throw one away for the 2 run error ahh baseball is maddening..,
Bunts are fine. Faking a bunt every AB on the first pitch for the past 4 years is LAME. Love ya, Gregor, butr stop that shit.
Can’t remember the guy on the Giants, some scrubbini, who would stand straight up for the first pitch, every AB. Drove me nuts. Like Blanco’s fake bunt.
Buster thunder! With a little help from the Pads.
Wow a legit 2 runs in RISP for Posey!!
Yippee ya yea yippie I o
Rout. Nice.
I like situational baseball done right. No, I don’t want a power hitter bunting, but your 2nd baseman? Sure.
Where are you sitting, Diggity?
Top deck, right behind the plate, with nobody within 3 rows of me.
Just the way I like it.
Love it. Like the old days as the Stick.
Hey, Sharks lead 3-0 over the Anaheim of Orange County Ducks in Game 1.
Orange County cities are steadily repudiating California’s sanctuary state laws and joining the recently filed federal lawsuit challenging those new laws. To hell with those reactionaries down there.
Republican Congressman Ed Royce, Orange Country, announced his retirement . . . Handwriting is on the wall, even in Orange County. In fact, Paul Ryan’s recent retirement announcement is a death knell for Republicans in November. Even or better odds a Dem picks up Ryan’s seat.
yeah, well, the last time I thought the republicans were going to get destroyed in a national election things didn’t turn out so well. I know a guy who lives on Lido Isle in Newport Beach (OC). Summer of 2016 he told me Trump was going to win. He’d recently been to some function at the yacht club and the Trump enthusiasm among those high-rollers stunned him. Naw, I said. Trump’s screwed. He just named the fanatic Steve Bannon his campaign chief . . . .
The great Brandon Belt bunted successfully against the shift in game 5, 2014, led to the first run in Bumgarner’s shutout
