A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

I’m Sick of Skinny Rick Reuschel

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 29, 2018

I agree with Loo on the last thread (big t-up dawg, big t-up). Not enough angst was expelled after yesterday’s epic loss. When your team is bubbling it’s way through the season you can’t just *aw shucks* a loss off like that. Especially when we now head into the den of the division leader.

At this point I don’t care who the closer is until Dipshit gets back as long as it isn’t Dyson. That dude does not have the make up for that job. When we were 1000 games out last year it didn’t matter. But I’m calling *head case* on this guy and I don’t want to see him out there in the 9th again unless there’s no one else to use…..

You score 8 and don’t win is a bucket full of rotting tripe. Dyson is what, 3-7 in save ops now? I say go with Moronta for awhile until Melancon figures his shit out.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:43 am

I have heard that it isn’t figuring it out with Melancon, but more about whether or not his elbow is up to the task of closing everyday. Right now, he isn’t there.

I thought the Ls to Marlins were worse. Once SF got out of Miami they’ve played much better.

Bigger issue to me was Stratton who got rocked. Listening to Flem during big inning he kept mentioning Rox jumping on first pitch and being ready to hit right away. Dunno whether it was what Hundley was calling or Strat leaving too many meatballs up there but they were all over him.

Toys R Us is toast. Used to be a big one in Sunnyvale where I grew up, pretty popular place. Don’t remember story behind it, but multiple reports by employees it was haunted.

Speaking of bullpens, Dodgers led 3-1 after Op left after 5 strong innings and proceeded to give up 10 earned over next 3 as Cubs blasted them 11-5. Yes they have elite closer, but getting to him and Roberts knowing what he’s doing 2 different things.

  6. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 29, 2018 at 7:30 am

You know they could of pinch ran for Posey and the runner would of scored on Hanson’s double for a 9 th run ..But nooooo!!

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 29, 2018 at 8:37 am

Bochy fairly often has chances to pinch run somebody late, and won’t, in cases like that. I’ve mentioned this many times. He seems afraid of losing a player going into extras, but that’s a problem you deal with, after you first get to the extras…

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:01 am

Pinch-running would have gotten some action for the Actionless one.

  8. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:20 am

The Red Sox, Yanks, and Dodgers all have closers that strike people out. That’s an ideal situation.
Kimbrel closed out the Red Sox game last night by blowing away Trout.
When we had Romo, Casilla, Lopez, Affeldt in their prime they could get big strike outs.

  9. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:23 am

In this juiced ball era, it’s tougher being a pitch-to-contact guy.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:24 am

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I was watching the replays of the double by Hansen. That ball he hit rattled around in the corner more than long enough for Damien Moss, uh I mean Buster, to score. Dusty before bochy was reluctant to use pinch runners, as we all remember in 2003 . . .

  11. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:25 am

As xoot posts above I think it’s basically Dyson because none of the other arms are durable enough. Strickland’s bone head act putting himself on the DL sucks but I still don’t think he’s the answer at closer anyway and just as likely would’ve blown that save as well.

  12. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:35 am

Hanson would of had a triple on his hit if wasn’t for Posey running.
Then wtf let the kid try a steal home, now that would be a Ricky Henderson moment!!

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:35 am

Moronta has the stuff to do it. I’d roll with him. He’s young and strong. They’ve all looked very good in the pen most of the time, but they’ve all puked on their cleats as well. Hard to nail this down but in the next-man-up scenario, Dyson should be out and Moronta in. That get-it-in slider by Dyson was hideous.

Kruk let Dyson off the hook for the meatball by saying you have to pitch to Giant-killer LeMaihuie (whatever) on that 3-2 count, but you DO NOT have to give in in that situation. With 2 outs, you can focus on the next guy rather than serve the ball up on a tee. Or walk the fucking bases loaded to get a better matchup. Ludicrous to say that was the right play.

    Skinny Rick Reuschel is gold.

  15. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:39 am

I was never in the Dyson camp. IMO, he is one of those Sabevans scrap heap pieces that hasn’t worked out, at least not from the perspective of being an everyday closer. And I get it that being the everyday closer is not the reason they got him, but still…go closer by committee until Strickland is back. RE: Strick, I am not saying he is the end-all to be-all closer, but with the current pen, I think Strickland was the best option. I like Moranta, but not ready to give him the role everyday.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 29, 2018 at 10:01 am

he’s very good as a set up man. Closing in pressure situations isn’t his thing.

An idea I floated last year in the second half, when Cueto was injured, was to have a 6-man rotation, but have Bum pitch every 5th day, and just rotate the other 5 guys off of that. But that’s too far outside the box for Bochy.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 29, 2018 at 10:55 am

I like the 6 man idea, that’s assuming the extra day of rest means each starter goes deeper than the usual 5 frames. If that doesn’t happen, the Pen really gets abused since there’s one less pen arm…

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2018 at 11:28 am

They could, for lack of a better word, cheat like the Dodgers, and use the 10 day DL creatively.

  21. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 29, 2018 at 11:03 am

I keep hearing on KNBR that Buster is “dinged up” but nobody ever says what that means. Apparently the beat scribes never bother to directly ask the question. We’re essentially at the halfway point of season, and he’s been “dinged up” apparently for quite a while already. Catchers historically start to decline around his age. But this guy seems like he’s 30 in a 35 year old body. What gives?…

      Sore hip, according to Kuiper.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2018 at 11:26 am

Maybe a longterm effect of the broken leg and how his leg was twisted during that injury, IMO.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2018 at 11:31 am

That would explain the power drop. You cant’ drive the ball if you can’t turn your hips properly. But he hit 22 HRs 3 years after the injury. and 19 the next year. He’s on pace for 10 now. Is his hip degenerating a la Bo Jackson?

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2018 at 2:07 pm

Could be a degenerative situation to some degree.

The not-so-fantastic-four seem to be going a little deeper into games in recent starts. Once Cueto returns they can even pull this of better. And when Smarglebargle comes back, we can say Vaya Con Dios to Gearrin.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 29, 2018 at 11:30 am

I’ll be surprised if it’s Gearrin who goes. They gave him a 1.6 million contract this season. That matters in Giants World.

Among active closers in 2018 Strickland is middle of the pack in WHIP and at the bottom for save % with 76.5. Before the meltdown against Miami I felt like he was sort of growing into the roll but his inability to be professional ended up F-ing the club. Roster moves with Smar-jizz and Cueto coming back will be interesting. Dumping Gearrin and Pence would certainly clear up some log jam. Maybe Rodriguez can close.

  24. pawliekokonuts's avatar pawliekokonuts said, on June 29, 2018 at 12:35 pm

Every closer has a meltdown now and then, even Mariano Rivera in the WS vs. Arizona. But they have to shrug it off. I’ve mentioned this before: my worst Giants’ bp memory has to be Goosefuckin Gossage walking the bases loaded and walking a run in, if memory serves.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 29, 2018 at 2:04 pm

So I’m their closed mind thinking it’s still a luxury to them to keep Lexi Pence,MIAJ, and human rain delay Gearrin!!
Btw when has Gearrin pitched last? Since they have been in most of their games lately they don’t need him for mop up duty..

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2018 at 3:12 pm

Not defending them Kat, but staying below this year gives them a reset, and a much more favorable landscape going forward. I guess Charles Johnson didn’t become the richest owner in baseball by throwing around his coin carelessly. Seems the ones with the most $$ are the ones tightest with the purse strings.

      Moronta lucky to be alive.

I get it, and support that this team is going to have to close by committee, but the two guys I would prefer to see run out there regularly are the Fresh Prince and Watson (with a smattering of Moranta). Glad to see Smith will get the call tonight.

My two favorite teams: the Giants, and whoever is playing the bums. Go Rox!

Postgame, Slater just sounds intelligent in explaining his approach to his ABs. Dude sure seems to knows what he is doing at the plate. I like this kid. Hope he gets more opportunities, and continues to prove he deserves the chances.

W Davis gives up solo bomb to Turner but closes them out with K of Bellinger. Final 3-1 Rox.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 29, 2018 at 9:52 pm

Yep. Rox take the bums down. Giants and bums now tied in the W column, and Giants are 23-21 against the NL West.
