Winning by a Field Goal
I was surprised they were able to blast off against that triple A pitcher. Usually guys like that shut us down easily.
I was out last night and missed the game. Apparently there was an issue with Crick? Will we be seeing some beanball payback today?
no reason to shift on Barry
That’s one of the most beautiful things ever published on Twitter
No kidding. Kind of mind boggling.
Wow. This is awesome.
That’s bad ass. No way in hell Bonds should not be in the HOF.
I was half asleep for the Crick stuff, but it sounded like a real issue.
Which statement is more accurate?
A) The Giants have no shot at the PS even though the standings say they do.
B) The Giants have a reasonable shot at the PS even though most of us have given up.
I would say A because this team can’t put a long won streak together, and there are so many teams that have to be passed.
Sure, there’s still a tiny chance, but it’s pretty tiny. The team has yet to prove they can stay above .500.
I’m not suddenly positive at all, but it does freak me out to think that it’s a mathematical piece of cake for them to be in 2nd place, just a couple of games back within a few days…
The Giants have 45 games left. It’s very doubtful we’re going to see anything hugely different from the team than we’ve already seen this season.
On a related note, I wonder if we’re going to see Mac the Oaf again this season.
I ended the season on Aug 2nd, Loo. Does anyone read the shit I write?
I ended it on April 2nd.
Just can’t shake the fact that weird shit happens and they’re only 6 GB in the LC.
I admit that I’ve been drinking very heavily this week…
Tip a couple for me, Loo!
I guess A. I wouldn’t say “no shot,” more like a very slim shot because the standings do say otherwise. And while B is true in that most of us have given up, it’s not a reasonable shot because there’s too many teams in front of them.
Ha! I voted “slim shot” before I saw your post, MAC. Great minds think alike! 🤔
C) The Giants have a slim chance at the PS….
I know I said I have waived the white flag, and also offered to buy any and all Flappers lunch and drinks of choice at a future Flapalooza, IF the Giants make the post-season.
Six back (seven in the WC). Possible, yes. Probable, no. Again…I vote C. A slim chance…
the *nookie monster* lqtm….
Believe me, he was a bi-centennial god…
in jersey
That had me laughing out loud….
MINAJ as a NY Met:
AB: 36
H: 17
BA: .472
2B: 3
HR: 2
RBI: 9
OBP: .513
SLG: .722
OPS: 1.235
I would trade Panik and Gorks for him today…
I’m going with c: The Giants have a shot, a long shot but I’m riding it out.
Yes, I’ve been told I’m an idiot and I’m sure I resemble that remark.
Can’t figure out the post from my phone but this is hella rad
Can’t get the video to play, but I’ll always root for a fat kid.
Even better if he wears thick eyeglasses…
“My name is Alfred Delia. At home they call me big Al and I hit dingers.” Love it.
That’s great…love it! Ya gotta root for the kids team after that!
Blach out of the pen to start tonight.
Game is free on MLB-TV for the dot watchers out there…
There’s different levels of giving up on the team for the season. I’ve given up hope for the playoffs, but I’ll still watch all the games. It’s a long winter without baseball, so I’ll watch until the end.
And then root against the Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees, and Cleveland in the playoffs.
If two of them make it to the World Series, the games become what a friend of mine calls “asteroid games.” Games where you root for an asteroid to hit the ballpark. Well, maybe that’s a little harsh. Maybe. 🙂
I play A LOT of daily fantasy baseball so I am as locked in as ever to the season. The thing about my Aug 2nd flag waving is that it’s allowed me to let go of the games emotionally. It’s not pissing me off when they lose anymore.
Agree Flav about now being emotionally disconnected. My focus (hope) is more on the front office getting its shit together in the off-season and improving the team.
KNBR is heavily promoting the Bonds retirement # thing as you’d expect. It’s nothing but praise and love and stories getting told all day. I wonder how the rest of the country is viewing this.
With indifference…
I called em done late July after the last Brewers loss on Sunday. They came outta the AS break comatose…
That late? I called them pfffttt before the season began.
Ohio State yesterday. Place is legit unreal. So big it has its own ZIP code, no joke. It’s a city masquerading as a school …
Do they have a statue of John Brockington from Jefferson High in Brooklyn?
I think he was the first RB in history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first 3 seasons.
Washed up at 29 with KC…
Way back they had a damn good basketball player named Allan Hornyak.
I liked his game and his name.
Never made it in the pros.
Willie might remember him…
John Brockington, still a cool sounding name. Probably on the cover of one or two of the first sports magazines I bought. I consoled myself that, in combination, Vic Washington and Ken Willard were better.
Back then I think the Niners had about 10 guys with last names starting with “W”…
Belt (remember him? Never forget) starts for the River Cats tonight.
His size 14 shoes will probably trip over the river cat mascot and he will break an ankle to finally end another season of DL duty..
Lulz
His quest to finish with a career best OPS is the only thing that might make September baseball interesting for me.
Fred Lewis was interviewed on KNBR and good luck translating what the fuck he said he does for work now. He started talking about getting his insurance license, then started talking about investing and not losing money in annuities but he kept saying “insurance stuff”. Marty Lurie clearly had no idea what the fuck he was talking about and changed the subject quickly.
Nothing changes, just like when Fred played the outfield he was “dazed& confused”
Fred’s career OPS+ was 97. If he’s doing as well with the “insurance stuff,” he’ll be happier than Chris Brown was post-career. The leather jacket in yesterday’s photo was quite stylish.
Does anyone know if they’ll be showing the Bonds pregame stuff somewhere? I don’t think mlb.com will be.
Giants pregame starts at 4:30 on NBC Sports BA. I would be very surprised if they are not showing it…
So far it isn’t on mlb.com that I can see (surprise) and I can’t stream it live because CSNBayArea isn’t part of my tv package here in NC. MLB will probably startup a bit before game time so maybe I’ll see some highlights. Thanks anyway.
Found it on Facebook live.
The thing that bugs me about the Bonds commentary isn’t the failure to acknowledge the steroid use — it’s the unwillingness to admit that Barry was a better hitter than Mays.
I agree, but Mays, IMO, was the better overall player. If I could take either on a team, in their prime, for me it’s Mays.
No doubt Chipower9, Mays would be the man to take 1st, not just because his defense would make him more valuable playing at AT&T Park, he’s also more marketable.
Barry would be the second best by a nose, then there’s a huge drop to third in real world value.
Yup! There is only one player who was definitely a better hitter than Barry, and maybe three or four who were his equal.
As for the unacknowledged steroid use, my biggest gripe is how probable users like Piazza and Bagwell got in ahead of Bonds.
agreed, Bonds was better and in fact the best hitter in the history of the game.
Bonds is in fact, NOT a better hitter than Ruth. Based on actual facts, not sabermetrical projections, it’s hard to make a case the career leader in OPS (100 points higher than Bonds) is not the best hitter ever.
Last chance to dump Cutch while the Bucs are just across the diamond…Just Do It…
1. Andrew McCutchen (R) RF
2. Buster Posey (R) C
3. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
4. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
5. Austin Slater (R) 1B
6. Alen Hanson (S) LF
7. Joe Panik (L) 2B
8. Steven Duggar (L) CF
9. Ty Blach (R) P
There’s no point in belaboring the obvious, irrespective of his use of PEDs, Barry Bonds is a 1st ballot Hall of Famer.
I’m here to praise Bonds, as well as the only SF Giant who was better, and to praise the House That Barry Built. AT&T Park is Barry’s enduring legacy; it’s why signing him is the most profitable free agent contract ever negotiated.
Now, about Mays for a second. Bonds’ career OPS is more than a 100 points higher, but probably 99% of fans would agree Mays is not only the greatest Giant, he’s arguably, the best player of all-time. Why? Because of his outfield defense, his grace in flight, his rocket arm. These are attributes whose value is greatly increased when playing right and centerfield at AT&T Park.
All my most ingrained memories of Bonds are of him as a batter: standing in the box, loading up on his left hip, his flawless swing, and the clicking noise the ball made after being soundly rejected by that maple bludgeon of his.
By blessed luck, a minute before Bonds tied McGwire’s record, I had turned right off of Oak Street and was up on the East 80 entrance ramp at that exact moment. All the traffic stopped to take in the fireworks.
Pirates after half the season were under .500 before they won 11 in a row and what 18 of 25 before last night. No one saw that coming either; any of 10 teams do that they are in the money or out in front. lIke Giants they are probably 4th best in division.
Giants chances? Highly unlikely, esp if pitching like Suarez and some of relievers lately, continue to get lit up. They won’t score enough to compete.
Miller said that during their big run in July, Pirates led league in couple offensive categories. August they aren’t doing as well. This was before last night’s game. So if Giants bats could suddenly get hot, win streak is doable.
Better hitter than Barry, I haven’t seen. High average hitters sure, but they didn’t have his power. So many amazing qualities–
patience
knowing the zone and not swinging outside it
taking the walks that came his way
power to all fields in all parks
staying in the box to hit
Only caveat —if I was commish I’d outlaw the armor everywhere except the protective flap over the helmet
Well said, Willie. And he had the three years where his average was off the charts too. His numbers are truly cartoonish when looked at as a whole. Video game-esque.
Pretty sad to hear the crowd booing Tom Brady’s congratulations message for Barry. That’s as pathetic as those who claim that Henry Aaron is still the HR king.
who is the gal in the gray by Bonds mom? She is in video of him hitting 756. He blows by her to hug him mom.
Myabe the gal in the vid is the taller one in black top white slacks. who is she?
you’re working hard on this broad, willie
guess they are both his daughters. Didn’t realize he had other kids beside Nikolai.
HOF, HOF, HOF. Sorry I had a tickle in my throat…
That was cool letting Bonds run out to LF. They should give him a #24 Pirates jersey and let him run out there when Pittsburgh takes the field.
lol that would be hilarious
this dude could play next year and lead our team in HR’s. I’m nearly ready to guarantee that.
Julio Franco . . . .
I was hoping they’d put him in the LU tonight.
Wouldn’t that have been something…
I like those #25 hats.
Or caps, I guess.
The Giants gave away Barry Bonds growth charts when Crawford was a kid. That’s kind of ironically funny.
Schulman tweet:
#sfgiants brass met with a Bochy today before the game, as our @JohnSheaHey reported. At the same time, Shaw and Williamson sat out their second straight game for Sacramento after an off day. Changes, and soon, would not surprise me.
The tweet was from last night.
another pop out to LF for Duggar. dude figure out another plan if they are going to pitch you away.
From what I remember in 2010, Giants were in contention for the division for most of August, until Padres started pulling away and G’s were something like 6 out at the end of August. Bochy commented at the time that maybe it was time to start thinking more realistically about the wildcard, not the division. Then Pads went out and lost something like 10 straight, allowing SF to get right back in it and of course finally pass SD. Trouble is this year, kind of hard to imagine 7 teams currently above the Giants losing 10 straight and just as difficult to imagine Giants putting any kind of long win streak together. So, mathematically, sure, still in it. But, reality bites.
exactly. As I said a week ago or so. Go look at the teams we have a better record than in the NL. If just the shit teams.
Man, Bell hit the shit out of that.
To use a BF phrase, Blach is just a guy.
he’s like Suarez. His stuff works as long as it’s in the perfect location. Otherwise, blasted.
I like to think that Suarez has better stuff than Blach, but probably not by much. Better FB anyway.
what da ya know, done in by another bomb at AT&T by a guy who is a fringe bomb hitter, at best.
he hit 26 last year. Not having as good a season this year. But he seems to like SF pitching.
Clang!
A couple of poignant moments from the ceremony: Barry tearing up at memories of his father; we can only guess how complicated their relationship was. Which is true for a lot of children of ballplayers, because the dads are gone so much during the season.
And Willie Mays saying with some sense of wonder in his voice: “I may not be around forever.” Something that seems unthinkable to Giants fans.
Old ballplayers reminiscing, and also the feelings we fans have towards them, reminds me of the Rush song “Time Stand Still”:
Time stand still
I’m not looking back
But I want to look around me now
Time stands still
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now
Time stands still
Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger
Experience slips away
Experience slips away
Time stands still
I turn my face to the sun
Close my eyes,
Let my defenses down
All those wounds
That I can’t get unwound
I let my past go too fast
No time to pause
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain,
Whose ship runs aground
I can wait until the tide comes around
Time stand still
I’m not looking back
But I want to look around me now
Time stands still
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now
Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger
Make each impression
A little bit stronger
Freeze this motion
A little bit longer
The innocence slips away
The innocence slips away
Time stands still
Time stands still
I’m not looking back
But I want to look around me now
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now
Time stands still
Summer’s going fast
Nights growing colder
Children growing up
Old friends growing older
Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger
Experience slips away
Experience slips away
The innocence slips away
excellent post.
It takes up a lot more space than the video would.
Now that’s funny, James.
Rox beat Dodgers 3-2 on Ryan McMahon 3-run HR with 2 out in the 9th.
Gotta love that.
The first game after Jansen went on the DL with an irregular heartbeat, the Dodgers blew the save tonight.
Gotta love that.
BB25 has probably gone home.
I’m just sittin’ here on a Sunday morning in VN day dreaming what JD Martinez’ 37 HRs would look like on this team…..
Probably look like 15 HRs? Just kidding, but it would still lead the team.
But you’re also not that bummed that they’ve been contributed to the 120 win Bosox . . . 🙂
True dat.
Has Bochy joined the rest of us? Down 4-0 with 2 outs in the 7th and he bats the relief pitcher.
Someone predicted last night that the G’s wouldn’t do squat with the bats tonight after scoring 13. How prophetic.
Crap, JD with 37 dingers and 104 RBI after tonights game. The guy is crushing it. No, we don’t need that here.
If not for Mookie Betts he’s winning the Triple Crown right now.
I read somewhere that before yesterday’s slugfest, the Giants were 14 for their last 94. That’s not the pitching staff hits. That’s the entire team. I’ve been out in the midwest, so I haven’t paid much attention to the last week of games. How is that level of hitting suckitude even possible for a MLB club? Now, a shutout beatdown in progress…
The Giants take flaccid to a new level.
Can’t spell soft without S.F..
3- Terry
4- Ott
11- Hubbell
20- Irvin
24- Mays
25- Bonds
27- Marichal
30- Cepeda
36- Perry
42- Robinson
44- McCovey
There’ll be a quiz on this later in the term.
Fun fact:
Buster has not homered this summer.
I have him at 157 PAs.
he’s ridiculous. Tomorrow I’m gonna look up his second halfs over the last few years. Without looking I bet he doesn’t have 10 home runs in the second halfs of the last 3 seasons (including this one)
Meanwhile, both Pirates catchers have hit a HR this series.
can’t argue with this take
Love it. 100% true.
I said pretty much the same thing above.
It’s ironic, even though he never played there, The House That Barry Built puts their respective careers in the proper context. Because centerfield is a key defensive position, especially at AT&T, Mays is unquestionably the greatest Giants player ever.
Good for you, skippy.
I guess Kent didn’t show.
How did 87 y.o. Willie look?
Good, in my opinion. He surprised them by walking to the podium to speak, instead of staying at his seat. His speech lit up the ballpark pretty well.
They handed him a mic at his seat, expecting him to speak from there.
Thanks, Zum…
this is a great tweet that highlights the downfall of our society
I thought you were referring to the mixed races earlier, and the honkyness of the later one.
Watching the Pirates feed on delay. Surprisingly, they showed a good amount of the ceremony. My take-aways:
-Barry looks damn good and the parts of the speech I heard were great. Giving a shout out to Bill Virdon was cool. It was a run-in with Virdon that led to Leyland screaming at him that one famous time.
-Pleasantly surprised to hear and see Willie Mays speak that well. I thought he had gotten pretty frail and was reduced to more of a wave and smile guy. Glad to be dead wrong about that. Still bugs me he won’t wear an SF hat, but I gotta let that go.
-I wish I could have been there for that. Looked like it was very well done from what I could tell.
Baer gives great ceremony.
Field a team that can hit and score? — not so much…
Pretty easy to predict yesterday that we would get shut out. Fucking limp-dicked assholes. This is how they give Bonds a show? Damn right he could still hit them out.
I sure hope they blow this shit up soon. Crawfish jogging out the DP is especially shitty. Fuck it. Cutch is mailing it in as is Crawfish. He’s bungled more plays in the past 8 games than all of last season. Take your 8 girls and move to fucking Toronto if you don’t want to play here. I]m supremely sick of this shit. PLEASE start Pence tomorrow to light the fires under the team. I’m kidding of course. But, Jesus Christ. If San Dawg doesn’t catch up to us I’ll be surprised. Fuck this team and their pathetic show. They should all be benched.
The team pays tribute to Bonds, and this is their effort? They might as well wiped their asses with their caps. Fuck this shit.
They need to blow this puppy up big time, including Bochy and the entire field coaching staff. Start fresh. Stop nonsense about Harper, which won’t happen. Trade Bum for a handful of prospects while he has one year left on his deal. Start making moves for baseball reaons, not PR reasons…
I’ve moved into the tear-down/rebuild camp. They went for a playoff spot this year. Cool, but it didn’t happen. Time to blow it all up. Get a young manager, ready to endure the rebuild. It means some rough seasons ahead, but it’s got to be done.
Love it! Another Flapper getting sick of this shit sandwich of a team.
I’m not too much in tune with the minor leagues, so I’m curious if anyone has a good read at this time on *possible* youngsters down on the farm for each position who could start replacing “the core*. OFers look ok in Slater and Duggar, maybe Shaw… how about infield? Hanson will probably just be a super utility guy. Any 1B, 2B, SS, or 3B youngsters? Catcher, we wait for Joey Bart. Always a good idea for a team to have youth pushing the vets and also allowing the team to possibly trade off some of said vets. Not sure I see that here. The team continuing to talk about its core is just silly at this point and moving forward….
There’s a ss doing well, but I can’t remember his name.
Look at the throw by this A’s outfielder. Unreal. I don’t even know this guy – rookie named Laureano.
Nobody in the Giants outfield comes close to making this play.
The A’s look like they are for real. Beane hasn’t traded half the team away, I wouldn’t want to face them in the playofffs…
https://www.mlb.com/video/laureanos-epic-double-play/c-2373961683
They might be a little vulnerable in starting pitching, maybe; but they play with a lot of energy and zest. Nobody expected anything from them this season; they’re playing with no pressure on them.
Barry did a full inning in the Pirates TV booth and absolutely nailed it. Talked about how guys like Johnny Ray, Tommy Herr, and Mike Lavalliere motivated him and taught him things.
No props for the BALCO guys. Hardly seems just.
🙂
..or at least the legendary Greg Anderson!
Didn’t he serve some time? He wouldn’t talk. Like in Goodfellas.
Wow. That throw is insane. I like how the 1st baseman nonchalonts the catch.
It’s been discussed many times. You can’t tear it down quickly with all the long term contracts.
If they’re all in one piece the starting infield in 2019 is Belt, Longoria, Crawford, Posey and probably Panik.
The OF could be any fuckin’ thing…
True, the Giants would have to eat part of Longoria’s contract in a trade. Bum remains the prize trade item. I’m curious what the Yankees would give for him.
Cueto, Melancon, and Smarj are nightmare contracts.
There’s a creativity needed in the front office that probably isn’t there.
Hard to say what Belt’s trade value is.
I just don’t think Baer would trade Posey.
I think Longoria’s contract belongs in the “nightmare” group too. I don’t think even a super creative GM could fix this. We hitched our wagon to Posey/Belt/Craw and then doubled down with Cueto/Smarge/Melancon/Longoria.
We just have to ride it out. Ride Captain Ride, and add more 1-2 year rentals and rebuild the farm system along the way.
That’s surely Baer’s preference. The Giants front-office has made the point to put out public statements several times this season saying there will be no tear-down. But at some point, it may force the issue for even Baer.
Pirates booth actually touched on the steroid allegations and HOF candidacy topic after Barry left. (Obviously easier for them to go there than for Giants guys) John Wehner, who played with Barry said he thinks there are already guys in the HOF that used and thus Barry should be in. Play by play guy intimated he has softened a bit on the topic, but sounded like he still had some reservations about HOF for Barry)
Barry will most likely not make the Hall of Fame. He falls off the ballot in a few years. Almost half of the voters remain immovable. Not enough of them will change their minds. Amongst them the A’s beat writers.
How’s this for a new manager….wait for it……….Mike Scioscia! Ha!!
In the Little League playoffs- North Dakota vs. Iowa. The complete honky-fest you’d expect.
